David Moyes has said the decision to drop Jack Grealish for Everton’s 3-1 win over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup was made by the club, but insists he supports the decision.

Grealish was not included in the squad for Thursday’s fourth-round win over the Magpies, as goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney, and Thierno Barry sealed Everton’s place in the quarter-finals.

Grealish was reportedly dropped after an unauthorised absence from training and Moyes has confirmed that decision came from the club. However, he said he supports the decision and praised his players for their performance against Newcastle, in the absence of the winger.

“I don’t really want to speak too much about. It’s a club decision, so I support the decision,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“The club are the people you should go to if you’re looking for more information.

“The one thing about Everton and what they’ve got is they’ve got really good values behind it,” Moyes continued.

“All the players stand up to the values, accept the values Everton put out there, what we want from them on the pitch and off the pitch, and from that point of view, the players done a brilliant job tonight.”

Asked whether Grealish would return for Monday’s league fixture against Newcastle, Moyes refused to discuss team selection: “I’d never give any team news away,” he said.

Grealish’s absence continues a disappointing period since his return to Everton in the summer. The 31-year-old joined the Toffees on a second season-long loan deal, but has made just three league starts. He missed the weekend defeat at Arsenal through illness.
