Following the Toffees’ two wins in four days over Newcastle United, confidence should be high as Everton welcome newly promoted Coventry City to Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday night.
It was also going to be difficult, following on from a resilient team performance in the cup, to face Newcastle again. This time, on their own turf. However, a brilliant performance by Merlin Röhl, who has now played three positions since the start of the season, at right wing aided the Toffees to an edgy 1-0 win. A tap-in from Thierno Barry was the only goal of the game.
It has been tough going for ex-Everton manager Frank Lampard this season, with Coventry currently hovering just above the relegation zone.
However, Coventry’s mixed performances have shown signs of improvement. A promising 4-1 victory against Newcastle was followed by two losses on the bounce, against Spurs and Fulham. Last time out though, Lampard’s side battled to a 3–1 win against Sunderland, who sit bottom the league. A third win of the season lifted Coventry out of the bottom three.

David Moyes has confirmed that Jack Grealish remains unavailable for selection, following a breach of club discipline. Grealish has missed the recent wins over Newcastle and will not feature.
The Scot also said Jarrad Branthwaite’s condition will be assessed ahead of Coventry’s visit. Discussing the defender, he told his pre-match press conference: “We are just nursing him a long a little bit and checking to see he is ok. We need to see how he is.”
