 August 2000

Aug 31:  Francis Jeffers hopefully avoided injury while playing for England U-21s and scoring in the 6-1 win over Georgia.

Aug 31:  Richard Gough will be out for the next two months with his injured knee.  And Duncan Ferguson will already miss the trip to White Hart Lane next week with his calf injury.

Aug 30:  Richard Gough is still waiting to see just how bad his knee injury really is, as he undergoes more tests at a London clinic...

Aug 29:  Everton Reserves went down 3-1 at Blackburn - the Everton goal coming from Keith Southern.

Aug 29:  The proposed transfer of defender Richard Dunne to First Division Wimbledon has fallen through after the parties involved failed to agree personal terms.

Aug 29:  The deepening injury crisis at Everton is looking grim:

    • Gough out for 6 weeks (knee)

    • Pistone out for 4 weeks (hamstring)

    • Xavier out for 4 weeks (knee)

    • Ferguson (calf)

But Alex Cleland should be back for the reserves at Blackburn tonight.

Aug 28:  Everton have narrowed the Goodison pitch yet again, making it one of the tightest at just 70 yds wide.

Aug 27:  Everton Ladies lost 2-1 to a strong Arsenal team in their home match at Marine FC.

Aug 26:  Walter Smith fears the worst as Richard Gough limped off with suspected knee ligament damage v Derby!!!

Aug 26:  After a slow start against Derby County, Everton finally began to tick just before half-time with goals from Jeffers and Gravesen. But Everton lost it in the second half, as Derby came right back with two goals.

Aug 25:  The CAS don't give any support for lifting Abel Xavier's ban, which does not contravene Uefa rules.

Aug 25:  Unsung defensive lynchpin David Weir is being offered a new 4-year contract with Everton, signaling Walter Smith's faith in his man.

Aug 24:  Francis Jeffers has been called up for the England U-21 match next Wednesday.

Aug 23:  A nervous start for what was supposed to be a solid home bet... and so it turned out after Carl Tiler was dismissed for Charlton Athletic , and the goals finally came from Jeffers, and a brace from returning hero, Duncan Ferguson.

Aug 23:  Although Walter Smith says he needs all his players, the departure of Richard Dunne to Wimbledon is expected to be completed soon after the Charlton match with the big Irish defender still suspended for the next three matches.

Aug 22:  The return of Kevin Campbell is being hyped up at least a month too early as he obviously still has some way to go before he will figure in Walter Smith's squad rotation scheme.

Aug 21:  The injury list lengthens with Michael Ball and Stephen Hughes picking up knocks at Elland Road.

Aug 21:  A relatively weak Everton reserves side beat Manchester City with a solitary Chadwick penalty at Widnes.

Aug 20:  The transfer of Idan Tal from Maccabi Tikva  Petah is all but complete, and now hangs only on securing a work permit, which Everton have applied for.

Aug 19:  Duncan Ferguson and Paul Gascoigne came off the bench to great receptions from 4,000 Evertonians, but the damage had already been inflicted by Leeds United and Alan Smith, cruelly exposing defensive weaknesses that continue at the back for Everton

Aug 18:  After reporting this deal was done (blame Sky!), Everton are finally saying that terms have been agreed with Idan Tal and his Israeli masters.

Aug 17:  Abel Xavier is to fight his unfair Uefa ban through the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Aug 17:  At a 3:30pm press conference, Everton revealed the resigning of Duncan Ferguson after a 21-month sojourn with Newcastle United.  The fee is 3.75M, representing an excellent deal compared to the 8M Newcastle paid Everton.

Aug 17:  Just when you thought we were safe to plan for Saturday... the deal that won't go away has been resurrected, presumably after Duncan and his "parasite" blinked first....

Aug 16:  Joe-Max Moore scored two goals and set up another, as the  the United States scored a 7-0 victory over Barbados in World Cup qualifying.

Aug 17:  According to Duncan Ferguson's agent, Newcastle United and their arrogant Board of Directors are to blame for the collapse of his Everton transfer.  But Robbo says Dennis Roach is a parasite!!!

Aug 16:  Everton finally admit there is a problem with the Duncan Ferguson transfer, and now say the deal is definitely off.

Aug 16:  The ankle injury Niclas Alexandersson picked up v Man City has ruled him out of tonight's Swedish friendly, and he is a doubt for Saturday's opener at Leeds.

Aug 15:  Duncan Ferguson failed to turn up for the first part of his medical today (Tuesday), and his agent is insisting the deal is dead.

Aug 15: Richard Dunne has traveled down to London for talks with Wimbledon after Everton received a 2.5M bid for the young Irish International.

Aug 15:  Reliable sources on the ToffeeWeb Forum say that Duncan Ferguson completed his medical today (Tuesday), and is expected to be unveiled tomorrow.

Aug 15:  Everton announced the signing of Idan Tal, Israeli International midfielder from Maccabi Petah Tikva for around 1M.

Aug 14:  The return of the Big Yin has stalled on the 1M loyalty payoff Duncan believes he is due from the Toonies.

Aug 13:  Tommy Myhre's woes continue as he managed to injure himself in training (again!) and will now require an operation that will keep him sidelined for at least 6 weeks.

Aug 12:  Among many ex-Blues in action on Saturday, Barry Horne took the plaudits with a rasping volley to secure the winner for Kidderminster over Torquay in their first match in the Football League

Aug 12:  The return of Duncan Ferguson now appears to hang on an "intensive" medical, scheduled for Monday... assuming he can resolve his sign-on / loyalty bonus row with the Toonies.

Aug 12:  Alexandersson (2) and Nyarko scored the goals in Joe Parkinson's testimonial against Manchester City in front of over 21,000 at Goodison Park.

Aug 11: Everton have agreed a fee of 3.75M with Newcastle United for Duncan Ferguson, rising to 5M based on appearances.  So... will the Big Yin now return?

Aug 10:  Reliable sources on the ToffeeWeb Forum say that Everton have been negotiating with Duncan Ferguson all day, he has apparently accepted a pay-cut in order to return to his *beloved* Blues, but he wants a 1M loyalty payoff from the  Toonies...

Aug 10:  Everton claim they are still confident of signing Idan Tal, despite the deal reaching a stalemate - presumably over money.

Aug 9:  Cameroonian Samuel Ipoua arrives on trial and scores against Yeovil as part of a second-string line-up as senior players are rested.

Aug 9:   Mad Dog Thomas Gravesen has had red card downgraded to a second yellow, and his 3-match ban reduced to just one - Leeds United on the opening day.

Aug 8:  The perils of pre-season came home to roost as Thomas Gravesen picked up a back injury which could keep him out for the start of the season!

Aug 7:  Everton took a commanding first half lead in the friendly at Home Park, and popped in a couple more for good measure before the end.

Aug 6:  Idan Tal is expected to sign for Everton this week; however, he will need a work permit.

Aug 5:  Alexandersson and Nyarko (2) scored the first-half goals at Exeter City as the new midfield ran the game; Jeffers added a fourth in the second half.

Aug 4: Uefa rejected Abel Xavier's appeal against his 9-month Uefa ban, but reduced the bans on the other two players!

Aug 4:   Ex-Everton striker Ibrahima Bakayoko has moved on from Marseille to Turkish club Trabzonspor.

Aug 3:  Joe-Max Moore has been called up to the US team for their World Cup Qualifier against Barbados on 16 August, and could therefore miss the season opener at Leeds.

Aug 2:  Everton go before Uefa today to appeal Abel Xavier's excessive 9-month ban from European games, as a result of the Euro2000 semi-final "brawl".

Aug 2:  A weakened Everton XI lost out 2-0 to Tranmere Rovers in a hard-fought local rivalry.

Aug 1:  The FA have stated that the small on-field altercation at Blackburn, aka a "brawl", will not lead to any punitive sanctions.  The appeal of Thomas Gravesen's red card is still awaited...

Aug 1:  Everton Reserves (U-19s?) came unstuck in their annual fixture at Burscough.
