Moyes's Men Masacered
05/05/12

I thought of a lot of catchy titles for this article e.g."HUMBLED AT HIGHBURY", "EVERTON EXECUTED", "TAMING OF THE TOFFEES", "HACKING AT HIGHBURY", "MAULED BY THE MASTERS" etc. but they all mean the same sad thing.  Amidst the euphoria surrounding Goodison since last Sunday, wherein in our inebriated state of celebration, we lost sight of reality and the fact that we are not a team of talent, a squad of stars.  We thought Everton would go to go to Highbury full of confidence and at least secure a point.

But Ouch - that drubbing by Arsenal really hurts a lot.  It makes you come back back crashing down to earth - to reality. After all, its wasn't a loss of 2-0, 3-0 or even 4-1, as was the case at the opening day of the season.  Looks like we've come full circle.  A 7-0 loss is not a scoreline.  It's a capitulation and not something you often see in matches by two Premiership teams.  And its even more consternating when you realize the teams are sitting in 2nd and 4th positions on the table of the Premiership.  Just how big can the gulf be between 2nd and 4th?

Its comforting to know that no matter what happens on Sunday, we are going to finish 4th in the Premiership this season and on our way to the Champions' League.  But are we ready for what lies ahead in the next season and the Champions League?  To be realistic, I think definitely not.  We looked like amateurs playing with professionals last night. And Arsenal were simply awesome, a joy to watch.  They give a whole new dimension to the beautiful game.

Maybe last night's result was a blessing.  Maybe there is a divine message trying to tell us something important at the end of this glorious, wonderful season, as if to tell us that there is so much more to do. Please don't get me wrong.  Everton Football Club is the best football club in the whole world.  And nobody is dissing David (Moyes) either!!!!!  In this Manager lies our extremely bright future.

But I think we should all sit up and smell the coffee.  We should realize that while our present squad performed a minor — make that major — miracle to reach 4th in the Premiership this season, the likes of Richard Wright, James McFadden et al are just not good enough to carry this team further.  We need a squad of players who can mix it with the big boys.

David Moyes will have to make a lot of big decisions at the close season.  He has to assemble a team who are able to cope up with pressure from the highest levels both in Europe as well as in the domestic arena.

And the money men at Everton had better have the funds available for our manager.  If they continue with their smoke and mirrors, as they have been all this while, we may not be able to work our way up from the platform that we have so laboriously earned this season — the platform of 4th in the table.  The springboard that is the Champions' League.

While I hate the fact that our fantastic season ends this Sunday, at the same time I think it couldn't come any sooner so that our heroes at Goodison can take a long, well deserved rest while the Manager and the Boardroom make some very big, tough and critical decisions and come up with a road map of continued domestic and European success for the years to come.

And on that note I would like to say a big thank you to the Manager of the Peoples Club, David Moyes, for making this season such a special one for all Evertonians.
