Yakubu urges Moyes to keep Harrison Armstrong in Everton XI after transfer U-turn

Yakubu believes Harrison Armstrong has earned the right to keep his place in the Everton side and has urged David Moyes to give the youngster more opportunities after the fallout over his future.

Armstrong found himself in the headlines during the closing stages of the transfer window, as fan power persuaded the under-fire owners to re-rethink their decision to accept a £40M offer from Nottingham Forest. The news rightfully enraged the Evertonian support, with promises of riots if the highly-rated academy product was sold.

The 19-year-old has been one of the bright sparks of an unbeaten start to the Premier League season, and Yakubu has called for Armstrong to remain a regular.

The former Blues' striker insists age should be no barrier to regular first-team football, arguing that Armstrong has taken his chance and deserves the opportunity to build on it.

Speaking exclusively to ToffeeWeb as part of our Once a Blue series, Yakubu said Armstrong looks as if 'he has been playing for many years in the Premier League'.

“You look at the way he plays and he deserves to be in the team. It doesn't matter about his age," Yakubu said.

"He looks confident. He looks good with the ball. He's chasing, he's fighting, he can dribble. And why not? You know, as a player, when you have the chance, you have to take it. I think he took his chance and he [David Moyes] has to give him more games.

“The way he plays, it's like he has been playing for many years in the Premier League. The way he moves, the way he passes. It's unbelievable to watch, watching this guy playing for the first time."

Asked how good he thinks the teenager can be, Yak said he believes Armstrong has the potential to become one of the Premier League's top midfielders.

“The good thing is he has a manager like David Moyes, who can guide him. For sure, he will guide him and help him become one of the best players in the Premier League. He has the potential. It’s too soon to talk about England but he has the potential.

“He’s a very, very exciting player. The fans love him. The way he started the game [against Crystal Palace], the way he ended the game. We need more, we need this every weekend. Let him do his stuff. It’s too early to think about England because England have a lot of players, but the way he’s started, I think he’ll get there.”
