Reasons to be Cautiously Cheerful

By Paul  Tran  : 14 July 2006
The best reason to be cheerful is that it's July and if you can't be optimistic now when can you be?

Seriously, even from this critic, I think there are reasons for us to be cautiously cheerful right now:

Ferguson — He's gone. Our non-playing, non-scoring 'legend' striker has finally departed, so we can stop hoping that he will mysteriously be transformed back to the player he was in 1995, the last time he was genuinely fit, hungry and effective. We can all now move on from this, at last.

Moyes — Hats off to the manager. There's some strategy in the transfer market buying a keeper, centre-half and pacy goalscoring striker. Only a central midfielder to complete the spine! He's done it early, so they have time to bed in. This means that any last-minute buying will be in addition to the above rather than in desparate blind panic. Let's just hope they all do well!

The Board — Completely inept at getting extra funding (presuming they want it?), but hats off to them for once again giving Moyes plenty of money to throw at the transfer market. Next time you criticise the board regarding transfers, add up the money Moyes has spent compared to the managers that his worshippers compare him with — best to use a calculator!

Johnson — A pacy striker who scores goals and chose to come to Everton. Some Evertonians may be shocked at this development as they have spent years abusively defending slow strikers who don't score. Yes, strikers are paid lots of money to score goals — looks to me like we've got one! This will also further help and improve Beattie and make the fools realise that McFadden is not the Scottish Rooney, but yet another Scottish striker who has a good game and gets the odd goal now and again. Please don't get on his back if he starts his Everton career like Lineker — the goals will come.

Being the eternal optimist, given the amount of money we have spent and the lack of quality in the Premiership (please ignore the self-serving rubbish spouted by Sky!), my idea of success and progress is a Uefa cup spot. A cup run would make a nice change as well. Sounds reasonable enough to me. If we get this, with some entertaining, exciting football chucked in, look forward to many praiseworthy letters from me — you won't even have to demand them!

It would be great if the Moyes fan club could give us their idea of an achievable target for the season ahead. I'm already looking forward to the Saturday night letters, gushing over the 'heroic, battling' goaless draws with Sheffield Utd and Watford!

I think this time we have a better squad on paper, but will we be better on grass? In his fifth full season in charge, isn't it about time Moyes gave us some good football and a bit of consistency?
