Some of our players are young, and will have many seasons left in them. Some are at their peak (Arteta, Jags, Yak), and some have peaked and won't have too many more goes (Saha, Neville - stop cheering at the back).
So, in a variation of YADM, would you call the players together and say, right lads, we're not going to qualify for Europe next season. The Europa league is too much effort for too little gain. Therefore, are you all willing to forgo one season of European football, travelling to far flung places like BATE, Kharkiv etc. to really push for top 4 in 2010/2011?
With a fit squad, full pre-season / preparation, we go all out on the assault.
(This is where my plan goes fanciful). The Board will provide a reasonable transfer fund, and commensurate increase in wage budget, on the understanding that the nucleus of the squad remains in place. We'll also go all out for the domestic cups.
Would people go for that? It's hypothetical I know, but following on from Keiran's email - would give game time to some of the other fringe players, and a chance for some experience.
I know many have enjoyed the European Goodison nights, and trips abroad, but until there's a re-evaluation of the worth of the CL and Europa, we've got to focus on that surely?

The last two seasons we have been very poor in the competition and there has been very little prestige to be had. Some of the games this season have been horrendous on the fans. Well known clubs like Benfica and Sporting this season, and Standard last season have made us look to be very poor.I for one would not be too saddened if we didn’t qualify for next year’s tournament.
I think you’re right about getting the players on board. As fans, myself included, we could accept not playing in what is a much lesser competition if it meant being able to focus on bigger prizes and more chance of success, but would the players go for this?
I think the funding will play a part as getting quality players in during the August window would signal a certain intent on the club’s part to the existing squad.
For me, the biggest part of this theory would be which players would Moyes be prepared to sell in order to raise the cash. But, as mentioned in comments to my post, of the expendable players that fans would list, who would Moyes have the nerve to sell?
I think we do have the squad to make a concerted push for the bigger prizes, with one or two additions and more focus. Time will tell though.
I don’t think so, not if the last two summers are anything to go on.
Moyes likes the Europa, he thinks his players do also so the team will be going for it.
This is why ehe Europa league is made a complete mockery and that the governing body FIFA haven’t got a clue when it comes to devising any club/country competition.

I think its a no-brainer to be honest. You’ve got to finish as high as you possibly can. Our turnover is going to be nearly 4 million down if we end up in 10th. Thats not taking into account the extra revenue we got through the FA cup last season. Europe provides income, experience, co-efficient improvement, incentive for new players to join, extra chance of silverware. This is why all clubs want to be playing European Football.

Basically, finishing 17th or 5th obviously makes a massive difference to the club financially but i’m afraid it wont make any difference to the transfer kitty. It never does.
Selling our best players is the only thing that makes any difference to the tranfer funds given to Moyes.
No decent players will want to talk about transfers until late July, possibly early August and I can see the normal poor start again.
I don’t know where you got that information. The recovery period for the opearation Fellaini had is 12 weeks.
He will be able to run and train on his ankle then.
He just won’t be able to play competitive matches until late June 2010 (the end of the second 12 weeks are to prevent re-injury and so contact will be minimised but he should be able to kick a ball by early June and be in full training end of June).
"Never any money to spend" Just wondered where it comes from?
"Never winning a trophy" Er, when did we last do that? One year in 1995, and a brief spell in mid eighties.
As for still learning-when does one stop learning?
Finally, assuming the language gets past the moderators (and God knows why this abusive diatribe is allowed on here), sort the spelling-as you say, "still learning"
We’re going to fall further behind the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham in the next few years because we don’t have the means to compete. I hope - really, really hope - that the ridiculous economy in football bottoms out so that clubs go back to being run properly and competing on similar means - because are we fuck going to get rid of Kenshite and we’re not going to have a sugar daddy Abrahmovic come in.
Now let’s say we don’t play in Europe next year and we make it to the Champions League. The Champions League is much harder than Europa. What if we have an early exit? It’s way too much of a gamble.
The only ay we could have a pop a top four is through major investment.
No manager, even Ferguson, Mourinho, Ancelotti, Capello or Wenger wouldn’t get us in the top four. And under most managers we’d be in a relegation battle each year.
This opinion is based purely on the money we have to spend.
I’m expecting another big money sale again this year, most likely Fellaini will be sold in a simulary "reluctent" fashion.
So if you take the pre-sale of Lescott transfer kitty that we didn’t need to touch and add it to this years kitty plus the £25mill for Fellaini/Rodders shouldn’t that in theory give us serious buying power in the summer.
Perhaps the long awaited ’superstar’.
