I have noticed on many threads that Osman is one of the regular whipping boys.
I indulged myself in last seasons DVD last night and was amazed how many goals/critical situations (for the good) that Ossie was involved in. I actually think that if he were playing last Saturday we wouldn't have capitulated like we did.
He may not be the most skilled player, but he always works hard, breaks up play and scores almost as many crucial goals as Cahill.

I actually think he is one of the most skillful players at the club! Mike is spot on though. He is no right winger.

Ozzie is a very skilful player, at his best alongside Arteta, Peinaar and when fit Fellaini. I would settle next season with our current squad with the addition of a fast right sided player, (full back or winger) so we can play the same on the right as we do on the left.
We need also a back up goalie.

Leon Osman is vital to Everton for the following reasons:
I believe our first eleven can compete with anyone,unfortunately, as has been said on this site many times,our squad isn’t strong enough.We haven’t got enough quality on the bench.How do we get quality on the bench? Well,we pay £80k a week to players who will settle for that rather than take £20k a week and have first team football.In Leon Osman we have a player who will take ,relatively ,lower pay and fight for his place.
In other words a team man with character.
He is vital,also ,because he is an Evertonian,someone who seems to appreciate how lucky he is.Every team without a billionaire needs journeymen and Leon is one of ours,He scored the best goal I have ever seen at Goodison Park and he is a credit to the shirt.

The original post in this cluster is absolutely spot on. I had the same epiphany when watching the DVD.
It’s always amazed me the amount of criticism Osman gets, I think he’s a tidy little player & an invaluable member of the squad.
Since becoming a fan in January, the knocks on Ossy surprise me too. Guys like this aren’t just around everywhere. If he’s the liability some claim, even Toffee fans, then please explain why he’s always around the ball, all over the pitch? And if he’s lacking talent/physical ability, then again, why’s he always around the ball, all over the pitch.
I believe we have the goods to make a run at the top of the Table next year. Whoever else comes and goes, we have to keep this guy. Does all the little things and always knows where he (and everyone else) is on the pitch. Plus, as an American Donovan fan, like the idea of Ossy roaming the middle next to Landon next season. Two determined, intelligent players to hold in defense and get the boys up front into the attack in a hurry. Already can’t wait until next season.

And I suppose Osman deserves to be in the middle ahead of Arteta, Pienaar, Fellaini, Rodwell or Heitinga. Is that meant to be a joke? This liability is on around 30K which we obviously cannot afford. I agree that his best position is not on the wing. No it is on the bench! Sorry for sounding like a miserable twat but I fail to see why Osman deserves to be picked. However I gurantee even when all are fit he will still be picked.
James, it’s his goals/assists contribution, mate. If he’s so shite, why are his stats as good as Pienaar and Artetas? He’s a good little player with a first touch to rival Zidane’s, that is surely without doubt his best attribute, and good finishing. He’s about the only midfielder who shoots.

I have learned over the years that some Evertonians are too quick to run down our players and appear to suffer from very short memories.
You could add Tim Cahill, Mikky Arteta, Pip and Hibbo to your list.
The common theme is when one of our players seems to be going through a bad patch of form, for whatever reason, the cries of "sell him" or "cash in" are heard.
I am not suggesting people don’t have the right to critique a player but the over the top rections when a player doesn’t perform to their best are something you just have to get used to.
Ossie could single handedly save us from relegation one year (only a theoretical example of course) and be run out of town the next if he has a string of ordinary games.

Everyone has the right to criticise, few know what their talking about. The lads a star, played in the right position.

The Premier league tends to be full of teams with physical midfielders so the majority of the time he goes missing. Then just when you think he’s had it and doesn’t deserve his place, he pops up with a stunning crucial goal.
If Osman could maintain his own high standards he’d be looking at a world cup place. Maybe as he matures he’ll find more consistency in his game.

Nicholas Harrison please tell me you were joking when you compared Osman with Zidane. First touch as good- IS THAT MEANT TO BE FUCKING FUNNY?

Why is there in existence a DVD of last season? The people who buy these things must be the same people who went out & bought the DVD of our wins against Chelsea & Utd this season (I honestly thought it was a wind-up by reds I know but apparently it’s true).
This shit smacks of desperation & sends out the message that we are a small club that celebrates league victories & unsuccessful cup runs as if we had actually won something.

You literally couldn’t sum it up could you? I thought I had heard it all when an Everton called Osman our modern day version of Trevor Steven but Nicholas Harrison has made a comment which will surely never be outdone by any Evertonian ever. To even mention this joke of a footballer with not only the greatest player of this generation but also 1 of the all time greats is quite embaressing and must sum up what many Evertonians have reduced themselves too.

According to the OS, we might see the return of Leon... but I hope not. Surely Moyes would know that Bolton will be a hard physical battle and not the sort of game our boy would relish.

I think the problem with Osman is when he is played as a right sided midfielder. He is uncomortable in that position as he has zero pace and as such often drifts inside where he is more comfortable - unfortunately this results in a total lack of balance and width when he is picked in this position and the negative comments are often justified.
However, Osman is an extremely useful central midfielder where his lack of pace is not exposed and he is allowed the space to demonstrate his significant ball skills.
In short Osman is very high standard back up to our best central midfield. And to answer your question, yes I believe we would have won with a fit Osman playing instead of a clearly unfit Tim Cahill. Why he was rushed back on Saturday when others were available I dont know...
