Here we are at the back end of another forgettable season, knocked out in the early rounds of the Carling, FA and Euro Cups and with precious little hope of qualifying for next years Euro competitions — yet our players still cannot keep their big gobs shut.
As each disapointing week dragged into the next, a parade of players have bragged how great we are. The latest to do so is Yakubu of all people. Before joining this kind of pathetic mutual back-scratching, he would be better off to pactice his penalty kicks or learn how to dive with some conviction. Also, instead of slow token attempts at pressurising keepers he could put some real effort into it.
Those few things would improve his performance and then he might be better placed to comment on the team performance.

Killer Instinct. That’s what championship teams have in common, regardless of the sport. As an American who came over to ToffeeLand with Donovan, that’s what I think the last (missing?) piece of the puzzle. I can’t imagine an EPL team with more talent, so can’t see talent being a discriminator in the next few years.
So, now that we have a load of talent developed under the same management team, let’s see how legitimate pressure to raise Silverware in 2011 affects them.
It’s interesting that guys like Scholes and Giggs are still going strong at ManU, despite being clearly past their primes. It’s that burning desire to win that causes Ferguson keeping them year after year. That’s the thing so difficult to replace. Think of it, would I even have to post this, if we’d managed to keep a competitive maniac like Rooney? And I’m not referring to his fantastic ability.
Do we have that something extra within the team right now? Well, we beat, or outplayed, several top teams in a row who were really trying to beat us. But the top teams stay atop because of the mix of talent and willpower. Look how old Chelsea is and with what 3-4 changes in manager since "The Special One" left? It’s that thing beyond just ability that keeps them up top.
Players talking about how great the team is while stuck in the middle of the pack is pretty funny. Let’s see what’s what this time next year. I would add that being a multi-sport sports fan since childhood, my experience is that most players on great/good teams don’t usually boast of it.

I very much doubt supporters of any other team would come across our player’s comments and if they did they wouldn’t care less.
The non-celebrity players know this too, which is why they say pleasant comments because they know the hardcore fans searching for every scrap of Everton news will see their nice comments.

To be fair to the players I suspect these words bigging themselves up are probably being put into their mouths by the twats at the top of our club with it being season ticket renewal time.

On reflection it was childish of me to begin this topic and accept your brickbats for doing so.
I guess the reason or reasons for my pique and grumpyness come down to a combination of factors. That ridiculous penalty kick was only one.
Those defeats by a worst ever RS still griggs. It disgusts me that we could not beat that useless shower of (expletive deleted) still grates.
What is most annoying is how everyone in the club from Moyes down to the players and even Toffeeweb scribes so easiliy passed over or cover up two shocking displays.
I believe that before we can make real headway there must be a culture that makes genuine appraisals of where things go wrong as well as praise for where they go right.
An example of what I mean was made by Landon Donavon. When Landon appologised to the fans for his big miss it was the first time that I can recall of any of our lot ever acknowledging their connection with supporters in that manner.
In my book that is the kind of honesty and public self criticism that puts Landon miles in front of some of his team mates.

It’s ironic though that Yakubu says the team are getting better when he is in fact getting shitter. I will forgive a lack of skill when the effort is there but Yakubu this season has been disgraceful. His effort levels during games are not good enough and judging by the size of him his effort on the training ground is not good enough either. His fitness levels also mean he is not sharp in front of goal hence his awful display against Hull. Granted, he had a bad injury but you can come back from it if you put the work into the rehab. He’s been back a while now and still looks a stone overweight.
So much of Moyes’ style is built around hard work and fat Yak does not fit into that. He is a lazy bastard who needs to be got shut of this summer.

Speaking of sound bites from players on the OS. Did anyone notice the quick removal of Pienaar’s remarks concerning England’s prospects in South Africa. Can’t quite fathom the in’s and out’s of that one. Somewhat gobsmacked when I first noticed it, but was less surprised to see it pulled. Just as well his on field efforts are not as badly timed.

Whenever approached by a journo should he a) Give a soundbite bigging up his employer and employees b) Say no comment and look grumpy c) tell the journo how shit we have been this season and if he had his way x. y & z would be sold and etc etc
I know which answer would ensure he wouldn’t be playing the following Saturday.
