Europa Cup

Comments (27)

If Liverpool finish 5th & win the Europa Cup, and as it all tails out, the Europa places for next season fall down to 7th, would there be an extra Europa place in the Prem due to the fact that Liverpool by right of cup holders have a place in the competition & not by league position?

I don't know if this is right, but it's something that has got in to my head; please let me know if I'm getting false hope... lol.

Neil, Let's just hope we finish as high as possible, and not get involved with all the new rules that Uefa seem to bring to the surface when it suits them.

If they win the Europa then I am pretty sure there will be a rule change allowing the winners entry to the Champions League!!!!!!!!

My understanding is that the winners do not qualify as holders, in fact I think that goes for all comps including the World Cup now...

The UEFA regulatiion reads as follows :-

'Unless the UEFA Cup titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Champions League through its domestic championship, it is guaranteed a place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.

If the titleholder does qualify for the
UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the number of
places to which its national association is entitled in the UEFA Europa League does not change.

If the UEFA Cup titleholder does not qualify for either the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, its participation in the UEFA Europa League is not at
the expense of the contingent of its association'.

I understand this to mean that Liverpool winning the Europa League does NOT create another qualifying place. On the other hand, in the situation where we finish ahead of them in the league (us 7th and them 8th say) they would not take our place by winning this year's competition.

Am I reading it correctly?

Phil I read it the same as you. If Liverpool only qualify for Europe by winning the Europa League (and finish, say 8th in the Premier League), then England will have four representatives in the Europa League next season. If they qualify by league position AND win the Europa League, then England will only have three representatives.

Better off not in the Europa League, we can concentrate on the PL next season and I don't mean qualifing in the top 4. We could give a serious push for top spot given the current form of Chelsea etc. Just look at Fulham the other night, they beat the old lady of Turin and in the space of a few days get beaten at fortress Cottage! by a fresher Man City. In Everton's 10 PL games following a EL game they have managed just 15 points which apart from the ManU game were all against teams we should be beating, all in the bottom half less Spurs. There is also very little financial reward for qualifying for the comp and it is not as if we can use qualification to buy some big names as we won't have the funds in the first place. The way forward is to issue new contacts to the likes of Pienaar and finish 8th!!

We need Spurs v Chelsea in the Cup Final and then I think Villa are the team that are there to be caught above us. So if we pip them for 7th and the above Cup Final happens, Everton should qualify for the Europa League.

No matter what the outcome, eight good performances, a few good goals and lots of clean sheets are what we need. Europe or not, this must set us up for next season.

Personally, if Mikel wants to play in the Europa, that's good enough for me.

And nothing to do with that shower of RS hypocrites. Dear oh dear - did someone take a dive? Penalty awarded. Yellow card. I'm surprised Stevie GBH didn't tell the ref to make it into a red - or am I getting very confused here?

Ditto David.

Rapidly becoming a laughing-stock. It has been said that there is nobody in the ownership who actually has the authority to sack him. And they would have to pay off his (huge) contract if they did. Which they may not be able to afford, certainly not if they had to find the money to pay their next waste of space.

So who is going to slim down the biggest squad in the PL? Or Rafa's waist, as it might be called.

Something else that hasn't been mentioned is that Pompey cannot qualify for Europe next season.
So a Pompey v Chelsea Final would enable 7th spot to qualify for Europa?

Do the beaten FA cup finalists still qualify for Europa League if the winners qualify for Europe through the league? Used to be the case, but not for League Cup finalists.

If they still do then seventh place for Europa depends on the FA Cup semis. We need Spurs to get past Fulham.and Portsmouth

Phil and Mike, I read it completely differently from you, the reasons being as below.

The UEFA regulation reads as follows :-

1. “Unless the UEFA Cup titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Champions League through its domestic championship, it is guaranteed a place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.”

This says that the holder is GUARANTEED a place in the Europa unless they qualify for the CL instead.

2. “If the titleholder does qualify for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the number of places to which its national association is entitled in the UEFA Europa League does not change.”

This says that there will be NO ADDITIONAL PLACES if the titleholder QUALIFIES through domestic placing. Meaning 4 places only available.

3. “If the UEFA Cup titleholder does not qualify for either the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, its participation in the UEFA Europa League is not at the expense of the contingent of its association”

This says that if the titleholder DOES NOT qualify through placings, it is guaranteed a place (by virtue of 1. above), but NOT at the expense of the contingent of its association. So an ADDITIONAL placing spot WILL open up. Meaning 4 places PLUS the titleholder making 5 places total available.

So if the RS win it they will have to finish out of the placings qualifications for another team to benefit.

"Pompey cannot qualify for Europe next season"

Where did you hear that Luke. Is this because they are in Administration, because relegation is irrelevant?

Liam, it was reported on the BBC website that Portsmouth would not be allowed to play in Europe. They don't qualify under FIFA rules on finances or something 'cos of their financial problems.

All we have to play for now is Europe, and I want us in it. 8th is our probable final position but there's fuck all in it between 7th and 5th a good run of wins and we're in the mix, C'mon.

I think that Liverpool will automatically qualify for the Champions League (no matter where they finish) under the UEFA Platini-donkey photograph ruling.

Anyway, Wednesday 14th & Saturday 17th April matches will be Evertons yeah or ney for next season's Europa League.

As far as Liverpool are concerned, Uefa make it up as they go along as we discovered a few years ago. My pleasure at the weekend was hearing the Mancs chant "Thursday night, Channel 5" and their constant reference to "Europless League for you!" Childish, I know, but you have to smile!

Has anyone listened to City FM when they commentate on them? Aldo at first was very anti the comp and gave it nothing but stick as it was below Liverpool. Now it is one of the hardest comps to win and much harder than finishing 4th and he wants the winners to be in the Champions League.

They changed rules before so who knows. What would be funny: Uefa annoucing the change, the RS finishing 4th... and Fulhan winning it. Would be very sweet indeed.

Eric

Essentially you are reading it the same as Mike and me. The only mistake you make is that you say that there are 4 places available when, in fact, there are only 3.

As things stand the 3 places are going to the FA Cup winners/runners-up and 5th and 6th in the league. As other posters have pointed out, qualifying from 7th in the league depends on the outcome of the Cup.

The only 'extra' place that can be created is for Liverpool or Fulham should they win the Europa League and not qualify by league placing.

My main concern was that the Europa League winners would qualify at the expense of the lowest placed league qualifier but this does not appear to be the case.

Phil I think you're correction of Eric is right. I also think Luke's got a point that Portsmouth can't be in Europe next season, I'm not sure if its related to their relegation or their finances (presumably the latter) but their reaching the final would be equivalent to Chelsea and Villa (assuming Villa finished above us) as their place would revert to 7th in the league.

My understanding was that Portsmouth did not apply for the UEFA club license for next season.

I don't know whether this was because they thought they wouldn't get one due to their financial troubles or because they felt they wouldn't need one.

Either way, no license = no Europa League.

Thanks Eric, yeah basically what I understand is it because of their financial position not relegation. I can easily see Pompey making the final, what else have they got to play for?
To be honest I think it is a safe bet that 7th will be a Europa spot this year, fingers crossed!
