Throw Down the Gauntlet

Comments (46)

So... here we are finally. A big game on the road between 2 top sides playing well, with a lot at stake for both teams late in the season, and we found the way to win.

Sometimes pretty, sometimes not. Sometimes on our heels, let's face it, but holding... and waiting to pounce. And pounce we did. The exact thing title contenders do, we did.

David Moyes got hot in interviews about today's game. It's been written and discussed here. I say he needs to throw the same challenge out to every opponent left on the schedule.

He needs to determine what players he has to get rid of before this Autumn. All the years of preventing relegation, building confidence, moving up the Table to respectability are over. This win proved it.

The waiting is over. Next season is the crucible. Who's up to it, Mr Moyes?

I like your optimism, but don't agree with the underlying tone here that big or even mediocre changeovers are needed.

Everton can't simply buy trophies, other clubs are in a much better position to do that. The fundation for our success is not foremost done during transfer windows IMHO, even though it goes without saying that Moyes needs to continue to pick our shrewd signings that he can polish into gems.

I'd be happy if we kept the squad intact. We already have a bit stiffer competition in place for Howard, and that was actually my number one wish at the moment.

The ones I would *consider* letting go if the right offer came in;

Yakubu
Yobo
Vaughan
Cahill

But certainly not all four of them, one or at a push two if great offers came in.

Yakubu and Cahill have been and still are very useful players to us, but slowly getting past their prime. This might be the last summer to cash in big time (particularly on Cahill, which is why I very reluctantly include him in this list).

Vaughan doesn't really seem as though he will make it at Everton, but could probably still fetch £4m. That says something about the foundation Moyes has built - only Arsenal and Man United could hope for similar fees for homegrown fringe players.

I'm not as convinced as others that Yobo needs to go. Probably wouldn't fetch more than £5m and maybe not even that. If he has cleared the air with Moyes properly after seemingly a minor breakdown in their relationship during the middle stages of the season, I am happy to see him stay as a back up centre half and emergency right back.

Why in the name of god does Moyes "need" to think about what players to get rid of?

Have the last 2 years taught you nothing, our squad needs to be bigger to cope with injuries, not smaller.

He needs to look at strengthening before letting anyone at all go.

As for getting of Yakubu! He spends a year out injured and has trouble getting match fit, shock horror. Give the lad a chance.

Lars - Thanks for replying. But I meant no undertones. I don't care about the money, only EPL Silverware. If money is the be all and end all, how did Moyes build the team over the years? The Blues have the talent right now. But like ManU does year in and out, Moyes has to decide which of his players are up to the rigors of fighting 3 points at a time months on end.

We have a running discussion here about who can and can't. A discussion we need to have. But I feel this night's result illuminates the need for DM to decide who can handle next season's white-hot spotlight.

Let's nor pretend. EFC is locked and loaded for title contention. I posted here declaring Mr. Moyes has to treat these last few games as he did tonight's build-up against ManCity. Declare his intentions. SAF does it weekly.

Let's find out which players are up to the pressure these last weeks. It gets us to Europe next year? Fine. EPL 2011 Silverware comes first, though.

Talent being equal (which it is), the grit decides. Money helps, it has it's place in success. But the grit wins, not money. We don't have money, but we have talent in abundance. Do we have the grit?

I repeat that there are no "must-" or even "should-sells" in our squad, but those four are imo possible saleable assets.

The Yak has a history for being a bit of a "two-season hero" with other clubs. Sure he was out for 9 1/2 months (including a summer break), and sure it takes some time to recover (although it seemingly haven't taken Jags or Mikky that long!), but he hasn't really convinced since his debut season, and that is soon two full seasons since. Although he has missed three quarters through injury, I think he could have shown more since.

We offloaded AJ at a similar age (he's 18 months older than the Yak), from a similar second-choice position, with a pretty similar curve at Everton, to Fulham for a fair sell-on profit two years ago. Admittedly bought a bit cheaper (making it somewhat more valid that he ended up second chance, yet yielded sell-on profit).

The problem is probably that in the current economic climate in football, simply recouping the transfer fee for the Yak will be a big ask. If we could manage that, I think you'd be looking to him as a sale that could give Moyes some funds to add one or two younger bodies to the squad.

Thats the way forward, sell 2-3 players, get a few injuries and there we have it... back to the start of this season again... Ahhhhhh !

Think people are getting ahead of themselves thinking we could be title contenders..

Ok we beat Man U, Chelsea and now Man City this year... Thats only 3 games out of 38... we need to become more consistant... We need to stop the debacles of recent years... Hull Away, Fulham Away, Wigan Away etc...

4th place is very archievable next season with some good luck, a full squad ready in August and a couple of shrewd signings.

No sales.
Keep the current squad (must hold onto the up and coming youngsters), add a pacey winger and cover for left back and this side will challenge for fourth.

To even consider selling Timmy is lunacy. Himself and Mickey have a great understanding on the field and are worth several goals between them.

Cahill worked his socks off for the whole game and only Jags compared in winning more balls. Even after his terrific performance last night there are some like Lars who want to get rid of him.
I honestly have no idea what some people expect.

I would go so far as to say that of the 20 players on the pitch only Tim had that unique instinct and ability to score our first goal.
Our second goal resulted from a quite brilliant move started by Cahill who then raced half the pitch to support Rodwell.
Jacks inch perfect cross, Timmys dummy and Artetas finish were of the very highest class.
That goal came at the end of a tough physical battle that saw Cahill in the thick of the action. I do not know where Tim found the energy and commitment to make that gut busting run but it speaks volumes for the lads character.
I give thanks that he is a one of ours.

I'm with Dick on this, Cahill is one of those players that does a lot more than he gets credited with. He also inspires his team mates, shows leadership when needed and does not give up.

I would also think that part of the 'special character' of Everton mentioned by Arteta recently would be in part down to our 'little Aussie battler'.

Liam, I agree. Keep the present squad and add a pacey winger. Donovan showed us what's possible without spending a fortune.

2 results stick in my mind this last month: Real Madrid 1 Lyon 1. Manchester City 0 Everton 2; Madrid out of the Champions League, Man City struggling to get even 4th place.

Common denominator: spend money like there's no tomorrow and everything will fall into place. Liverpool FC spring to mind too, with their present setup....

Agreed, money certainly helps but throwing it around recklessly has caused huge and mounting debts in the Premier League. Portsmouth anyone?

I reckon Moyes has got it more or less right. After all, the tortoise beat the hare in the long run even if it's taxing us Everton fans to the limit......

So, where will the money come from for that pacey winger?

I think we need a pacey right-back and cover for Baines and another striker...

I wish it were not the case, but in the present regime, it appears we need to sell to buy.

And that is probably a smarter move than borrow to buy.

And I wholly agree with Lars tentative suggestions. IF we sell (as Lars qualifies), these may be tough but smart options for us.

Didn't go last night and ended up watching the game on Football First.

I was getting dragged into the "Cahill is a passenger" mantra on here and was thinking he has been poor the last two games, then last night I watched him tackle, kick and defend all over the pitch and have the werewithall to stick his head onto Baines's shot/cross.

Also as someone esle has already mentioned, he started the move for the second and his step over was what gave Arteta time to bury it.

Not going to discuss selling Yakubu as just daft but the comparison with AJ is pointless, as I know which of the two I would fancy everytime when a one-on-one occurs.

The idea of selling Cahill is ludicrous. Some people have very short memories around here. He's had a lot of trouble with injuries lately and his form has suffered, but the guy is Mr Everton and he's a very, very dangerous player when fit and in form, and he contributes more to our play that some people think. Put it this way - the rest of the top half of the Prem League would love it if we sold Cahill. Not going to happen.

Ditto the Yak. At least give him the benefit of a solid preseason for rushing to snap judgements for goodness sake. There's no reason to sell Yobo either, he's a perfectly good backup.

The only player in the sqaud that I would honestly say is probably surplus is Hibbert. Neville, Coleman and Heitinga are all good in that position, and others can cover there in an emergency. I think that sadly it might be time for Hibbert to seek greener pastures for his own sake really.

Our no. 1 priority this off season is keeping this squad together, maybe unless a ridiculous offer comes in for Rodwell. No. 2 is signing Pienaar to a long term deal. No. 3 is signing Donovan or a similar very pacy winger.

Anything more than that is gravy - we could use a backup left back, we could maybe use another top draw young striker since I'm not convinced Vaughan or Anichebe are going to make it at this level (Vaughan mainly due to injuries). But we have the basis of a very, very, very good team for next season now, if we don't get crippled by injuries. COYB!

ABSOLUTELY DISCGRACEFUL FELLOW BLUES.

To mention letting Cahill go is a very painful thing to hear. He is one of the main reasons theres spirit in that dressing room, hes the main reason we have won so many games in the past few years, hes the main reason most players who join us understand what Everton are about.

In my eyes he can have a bad game for us for the rest of his career as what hehas done for us since hes been here has been nothing short of remarkable.

This is hard to say but if everyone loves Big Dunc so much (yes hes my idol), then tell me what Tim Cahill has done less. He shows commitment, he loves the club and feels at home at Goodison. He puts his neck on the line every week and he is a model professional.

He scores vital goals like the big man and he plays a million more games. Tim Cahill is envied by so many opposition fans I speak to and I know exactly why. I cant believe some of you are actually saying let Tim Cahill go. He makes me proud even when he doesnt get on the scoresheet. He always gives his all and would die for Everton on that pitch.

In terms of Yakubu it wasnt long ago (before his injury) that he was the best finisher in the Prem. Give the guy some space and he will be back to a 15-20 million pound player. Fuck saying hes fat and lazy. I dont want the Yak in the channels running, I want him in the box where he belongs and I want to see good service to him. Hes a cracking player and has lost a lot of muscle since his injury (as was evident when he came back as he looked like Anichebes build).

Leave the Yak alone as hes a cracking player and will be back.

As for Tim Cahill......probably our best EVER buy. If you havent got anything productive or constructive to say dont say it. Criticism is good when due but this is a disgrace.

I agree with those who say we need to sell some players.

The need is not so much for financial reasons but for two other very good reasons.

1. Get rid of the dead/dying wood. Like it or not, there are some players who are either on their way out or about to be and need to be moved on. Yakubu is potentially one of them and Cahill* is another potential. Vaughan is a definite as is Anichebe. Saha is a player we need to keep but he's not got too many more seasons in him

2. Keep things fresh. Keeping dead or dying wood can instill lathergy and compacency in the other squad members. Bringing in new players also reignites the spark, particularly as it reminds the team that they are, to a point, expendable and need to work for their place.

*It's a tough call with Cahill. He is Everton through and through yet he is in danger of going off the boil. Part of me says keep him as he gets "those goals" yet he can go games without getting anywhere near the mark.

The crux of the team, the spine of the Everto team is the most solid and strongest it's been for years.

When fit, the key players

1. Howard (has his weaknesses but has done very well)
2. Arteta (particularly when Pienaar plays)
3. Jagielka
4. Baines (has his moments but is definitely there and works very well with Pienaar)
5. Pienaar** (helps take pressure off Arteta as a creative source)
6. Fellaini
7. Saha (we need an understudy to take over from him)

Rodwell is not yet part of the spine of the team although, if we keep him, he will become an integral part.

** Until writing this, I never realised that Pienaar was such an important link with so many players.

The parts of the team which need desperately need attention:

1. Rightback (Neville is getting on and we need someone to take the post to the next level)
2. Right Midfield (this post has been a weakness for several seasons. Hopefully Bily can make it his own next season. if not we could have trouble)
3. Striker.

Yobo. I can't decide if Yobo should stay or go. The only conclusion I can reach is that Heitinga should partner Jagielka and keep Yobo for back up. Let Distin and Senderos move on.

Not sure where you can get the highlights (apart from Everton TV (have to pay for that) but you can see the goals and the build up on 101greatgoals.com. However, doing that on Saturday night to have a look at the goals against Bolton again I got a pop-up from my security telling me it was a risky website!

Selling Yak or Cahill would be suicide... get a grip Lars! Vaughny would probably be good business at £4m with the odd 'add-on' included in the deal, and Joey Yobo could only go if we had a fresh face lined up.

How much do you actually think we'd make through selling Cahill and Yak anyway? I'd be surprised if you'd get more than £15m combined when taking into account their age.

There are 2 issues here. One is do we sell at all? And if so who?

Based on the awful injuries we have had this season, I cant believe we can afford to let anyone go. It's not that I am a huge fan of all our players but our experience in pre-season is that EFC don't really sign quantity, so if we let two go and sign two then we are no better equipped to cope with the rigours of another season. I am also not a great fan of Yobo but he will provide adequate cover for Jags and Heittinga/Distin depending upon who is playing at the back.

So I think it's more pertinent to ask where we need to strengthen?

I would prefer us to target a quality right back with some pace and as we all agree a pacy winger in the Donovan mould and also another striker. At the moment Anchiebe is not much less injury prone that Vaughan and I am not convinced that Yakubu is enough support for Saha who, despite a better injury record this year, is still not going to be an ever-present next season. I like Steve Fletcher of Burnely would not cost much and, with Burnley probably going down, they would be under pressure to sell him.

So I think three new additions in the summer but no departures (unless we can get rid of Yobo and replace him with another CF at the same time).

Lars thats got to be one of the most ill-timed posts since Kenrick slated us for beating Man United 3-1.

I have to agree with Duncan, we've been moaning all season about injuries and now we are saying a Big What If we hadn't had them we'd be a top four challenger. To lose big players and intergrate new players takes time. So no, we'd be back to where we have been the last few seasons trying to playing catch up.

Moyes has already hinted that he is not bringing any new players but will be looking to increased wages instead. So I reckon he's very happy with the squad he's got and knows that he's got players who can easily cover several positions.

I thought it was pretty widely accepted that in order to buy, we first have to sell.

If the squad is to be improved, it follows that one or more players first need to be sold. I don't like it anymore than anyone else but that's how it is.

For me, what it boils down to, is which player(s) could be deemed as being past their best and would also fetch a transfer fee large enough for us to improve on what we already have.

I don't want to sell Cahill either (I'd ideally like to see him coming on as an impact sub next season) but if we want to improve, difficult decisions need to be made. Reluctantly I've got to agree with Lars.

Anthony, potential dead wood.Cahill did he look like he was last night?

Fair enough he has had a few dull games but what does he have to do to stop stupid shouts like that?

What happens if you do get rid next season? the players and supporters look for big players in big games and season after season he rises up to the challenge in those games, more than Pienaar, Arteta and every other player at the club. This man should be kept at this club for the simple reason of how much our young stars can learn off him as he is a born leader.

As for the Yak, give him a grilling in pre season and then pass judgement as he will more than likely come back scoring for fun as he is a natural goalscorer who at present is not fit or sharp.

We need:

a fit centre forward as back up for a hopefully fit Saha (fantastic footballer!)
Pienaar signed up.
Fellaini fit.
Bilya accustomed to the PL
Donovan or similar player.
Back up for left back.

Then, with a fit Yak and Vaughan, Yobo backing up CB with Duffy to come through, and Jags and Arteta fit from the start... We are top four at least!

I don't see any call for wholesale changes and quite an argument over those suggested to go. So, I take us in general agreement on the talent level. Which leaves the question of heart, or toughness, or grit, or whatever you call that quality that makes a team fight 3 points at a time, time after time.

Is the frustrating up-and-down of the last few weeks due to lack of heart, toughness, etc. or just getting most everyone back from injury, jelling again, returning to match fitness?

This question is what prompted me to post above here in the first place. I think we have the talent. Or rather, I don't think Sky 4 are more talented than we are. Which leaves those qualities that are only apparent through winning; again, heart, courage, whatever name you want to give it.

Mr. Moyes has brought us to this point after so many years. There's just the last step, the longest and most difficult one; title contention. He's assembled the squad with the physical ability and football talent.

I say the only thing left is for him to figure out which ones are not up to the game after game grind and decide to either keep them and push them or sell them off for a pound or two.

We seem to have enough of us in here thinking we can get into the Top Four. I don't disagree. But, my view is that if we have enough to make Top Four, we have enough to make Top One!

That SKY 4 business is about to end. I'd guess ManU will stay up because SAF has spent 25 years building a first-rate, top-to-bottom organization. Other than them (and let's see what happens when Giggs, Scholes and the other over-33s get too old overnight), it's anyone's title to grab and EFC has as much talent as anyone. But do we have the other thing champions have? There's the question.

IF we can get a pacey winger and everyone else fit, I agree our first team is pretty much the equal of anyones in the league now. Which is the first time I've been able to say that for over 20 years.

In terms of challenging for a CL place or better, I don't think the issue is mentality so much. We've shown recently that when everyone is fit, we can beat top teams and also grind out wins against weaker sides. The issue now comes down to squad depth over a season.

Look at the depth that Man U and Chelsea in particular have in their squads, and Arsenal, City and Liverpool to a lesser extent. They can absorb a large number of injuries and rotate players over a large number of European and domestic games, because they can afford to have good quality, experienced players on the bench and in the reserves ready to come in. When our players get injured, we're reliant on inexperienced young players, whereas they can bring in full internationals. Plus they win games constantly in the last 10 minutes because their players are fitter and fresher due to rotation.

We're not going to be able to maintain a squad of that size unless we get into the Champions League group round, basically. We also need a new stadium to increase gate revenue. All we can do until then is build as strong a first team squad as possible, get the players as fit as possible to survive the number of games, and hope it all comes together enough for us to get on the gravy train. I really hope it works for us next season (I'm not one of these extreme optimists that thinks we're going to get anywhere near a CL place this season!).

Interesting times ahead.

While other clubs in the top half - except perhaps Villa - are looking at the possibility of wholesale changes this summer - we are starting to look pretty settled.

This being a World Cup year I think history tells us that there might be a lot of players up for grabs this summer. With Arteta looking odds-on to miss out on a Spain call-up, Fellaini's Belgium failing to qualify (regardless of his injury) - same with Bily - and Jags and Baines... and even Rodwell at the very outside (and Phil Neville - if his quote earlier this week is to be given any creedence by Fabio!) still with work to do to get in the squad, let alone the starting XI, it probably leaves Tim Howard, Heitinga, Cahill, Yak, Yobo, Anichebe (perhaps), Louis Saha (unlikely) and Pienaar in the shop window. Oh... and Senderos (!).

Realistically I think we will be able to retain all of these players, with Pienaar (and maybe Heitinga) the only one with a prominent chance of being courted by a "bigger" club than ours. If we can keep progressing to the end of the season, reach Europe, and avoid any problems within the club set-up, then I think that the entire squad will be excited at the prospect of wearing the Everton shirt for the 2010-11 season. And while other clubs might be spinning that transfer merry-go-round with heightened frenzy, starting the season with a settled squad might play right into the hands of our football club. We can only hope.

Sorry Tony I see how it reads in my last post. I meant McCarthy reckons they'll beat us at their home this Saturday.

If we can't beat Wolves over 2 games we don't deserve to be anywhere near a European spot. McCarthy is getting more carried away than most of us about his teams' finish to the end of the season, which is a bit rich coming from the manager with the worst Premier League record. I just can't stand him. Him and Gordon Strachan think they're the funniest bastards going when they're interviewed. I want to see what flippant remarks he makes on Saturday after we've twatted them 3-0.

The only players we'd get any real money for are guys we need in the squad at the very least; the league is a squad competition, not a team competition.

Instead of selling, we could try getting a couple of guys on loan. I'm pretty sure we have done this before!

The reality is, to be able to afford the squad we need, we have to get into the group stages of the Champions League, either this year or more likely next.

It may look like Catch-22, but we nearly did it once before.

I read somewhere that the player every team hates to play against is Tim Cahill, we must keep this type of player for as long as possible, then hopefully put him on the coaching staff.

He epitomises everything about Everton, a typical Aussie, will not give up under any circumstances and idolised by every young Evertonian because of his commitment to Everton and the City of Liverpool.

Look across the park at the " signing a new contract every year" gang of mercenaries, what would they give for a Cahill ?

The board needs to look at its finances and make sure NO-ONE leaves this club that the manager wants to keep.

Against all the odds and with minimal help from the board we have forced ourselves into a challenging position that could reap great rewards next season, if not this season, to build up a team of players who have an affinity with the club rather than mercenaries who want more and more money to actually play (SWP, Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano etc) is the way to go.

It's nice to see everyone being optimistic, it's an exciting time to be a Blue. I just hope we can keep hold of our best players in the summer and with the addition of 3 or shrewd signings we can really challenge next season.

Talking about keeping hold of our best players, there's somebody called Noakes over on Bluekipper (click on Jack's picture) saying he has reliable inside information that Rodwell is going to Manure in the summer for £12m.

I know I shouldn't read this shit or take these rumours seriously but does anybody have reliable information that he is not....please???!!!

Dave, I'm reliably informed that Man U are skint and Ziralex can only buy players if he sells. This is why they're still handing out contracts to a 40 year old keeper, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes and it's also why he signed Owen. The press reckon he's got the Ronaldo money burning a hole in his pocket but that's gone towards the Glazers' debt.

I also heard Rooney was stalling on a new contract and Barca and Real were interested. So the only way they'd afford Rodwell is if they sell Rooney. There's some irony there.

But the real reason it's bollox is because after selling Lescott for £22 million do you think Moyes would really sell Rodwell for £12 million?

In football you can never stand still. Last summer Everton struggled to raise money and didn't buy anyone until Lescott made his move. The whole situation had a bad effect on the team and contributed to Everton's poor first half of the season.

This summer Moyes will undoubtedly want to strengthen the squad again but where is the money going to come from?

Here's a few suggestions:-

Joseph Yobo: Has been an outstanding player over the years (apart from the odd moment of madness) but this season Yobo seems a little unmotivated. He's slipped behind Jagielka, Distin and Heitinga and he turns 30 later this year. Now might be a good time to cash in on Yobo.
Approximate Transfer Fee: £4M

John Ruddy: Has made a big name for himself in Scotland. Has little chance at Everton behind Howard and Mucha. We won't get a lot but every bit helps and why hold the player back any longer?
Approximate Transfer Fee: £1M

Tim Cahill: Ok this is probably controversial but lets face it Cahill is slowly getting worse every season. He's a great character and a cult hero but he's forgotten how to score with his feet. He's an attacking midfielder who has scored just 7 goals this season. I like Cahill and feel he's a useful player but he's also 30-years-old now and if we ever want to earn some money on him nows the time.
Approximate Transfer Fee: £5M

James Vaughan: He's so injury prone. Any talent he had as a 17-year-old seems to be lost. He's just simply never going to be fit enough to play regulary in the Premiership. He looks destined for a Championship career.
Approximate Transfer Fee: £2M

Yakubu: Ok so he's come back from a nasty injury and we have to be patient. But he returned in August, thats 8 months now. 8 MONTHS. How long is it going to take this guy to get back into shape? Jagielka and Arteta have only been back a short time and already look fitter then Yakubu. At the end of the day Yakubu's job is to score goals. And this season he's scored 4. Thats not good enough. Yakubu has a history of starting well at clubs and then losing interest. He's 27 so we should get a good price for him. Approximate Transfer Fee: £8M

By selling Yobo, Ruddy, Cahill, Vaughan and Yakubu I would guess Moyes could raise £20 million. And lets be honest only Cahill would really be missed.

Moyes can spot a bargain and £20 million is a solid amount to work with.

Thank god David Moyes can see how vital Tim Cahill is to Everton. He should be one of the first names on the team sheet every single week.

I would love to know if the people wanting him to be sold actually ever go the game or whether they simply watch the 30 seconds on match of the day or the highlights on football first.
