Something has been nagging at me for a couple of weeks now: do we need the RS to win the Europa League?
If the league were to finish now, the top 4 would enter the Champions League. City would qualify for the Europa League through the Premier League. Villa would qualify from the League Cup & the RS would gain entry via a place being handed to the league from the FA cup finalists already being qualified.
Hypothetically (for this scenario to work) the RS have won the Europa League. Would their league place then be passed to 8th in the league, which would mean we can qualify this way?
PS - I believe we can gain an extra place in the league, but this could be a fall back for us.

Portsmouth aren't eligible for Europa Cup spot if they qualify through the fa cup as they have been in administration this season. Best result is if they play Chelsea
That's correct, Philip, but if Pompey win, I don't think that Europa League place will go to anyone else — i.e., 6th will be the lowest qualifying place from the Premier League.
The plus for Everton is that the teams are so tightly bunched together that if we can move up at least one .... what's to say we can't move up 2 or even 3?

Gents, take a look to your right, and you'll see the prem league table. All ifs & buts but if we beat Wolves, Villa are away to Chelsea and get beat and let's face it will do well to get anything out of the game. We'll be on 51 pts with Villa & the RS and only 2 pts behind Citteh.
City have got the Manc derby, Arsenal, while Spurs play the sky 3 & Man C, there's still an awful lot of points to play for.

I'm sure this was mentioned a couple of days ago, and I think its very unlikely that it'd open up another Europa spot.
I must admit that I'm surprised we've got anything to play for after the first half of the season... but its great that we have more than mid-table in our sights. I agree with David Moyes' comments. European qualification this season would actually be more impressive in many ways than our 4th spot finish.

The only teams that can qualify from 8th place are Fulham and Liverpool and they'll do it by winning the Europa League.

This issue was discussed on the 'Europa Cup' thread a few days ago.
Lyndon - surely if Portsmouth qualify through the FA Cup their place will go to 7th in the league as England is entitled to 3 representatives in the Europa League.

Does anyone know about that 'Fair Play' thing that got City into Europe?
Despite the technicalities, we are actually, amazingly, in a situation where the outcome is, as they say, in our own hands. Six straight wins and we are bound for glory.
So, brave boys, game by game, and if it goes well enjoy the others looking over their shoulders asking 'who are these guys?'

I think exactly 7 teams from England are eligible for Europe each year. So there's no way 8th place would open up and there wouldn't be only 6 teams if Portsmouth won the FA Cup. This is to create a fair balance of teams in Europe based on the quality of the respective leagues. I could be wrong though.

European qualification is as follows :-

Not totally. It seems from what people have been saying that the winners of the EL could be given a spot irrespective of where they finish in their domestic league.
I can just envisage a situation where we finish above the RS but are denied a place in the EL because they have won it.
After 2005 anything is possible.

My experience of supporting Everton for over 30 years, is that you just can't work this stuff out before hand.
We've got Wolves today & are playing well so let's just concentrate on beating them & getting the 3 points.
They are also playing well, will get 'at us' and we have struggled & dropped too many points against these sort of sides already, so can't take the win for granted.
We just need to keep winning, game by game now and let the future take care of itself.

I tell you that BBC predictor is taking a hammering. I've just had my fifth go in a couple of weeks.
My latest attempt tells me we'll finish (wait for it) sixth "on goal difference" with the same number of points as Citeh (who finish fifth) and the same number of points as the RS (who finish) fourth!!!!!
This one came out with me having us only dropping points to Villa away (a draw) and is a very very optimistic one.
As much as I would love us to win every game left except the draw at Villa I thyink it's a big ask,and I reckon seventh is more likely.....but hey strange things happen!!!

Brendan, from memory i think you are right in that scenario although I'm not certain.
I've got a feeling that each country can only have a set number of places in each competition. We are allowed 3 so its probable that if the RS finished 8th and won the Europa then there would only be 2 league places available assuming the right fa cup final....

If the redshite win the Europa League and finish 8th they would be allowed back in as defending champions, however it would not be at the expense of an English club who have qualified via league or cup criteria. This would mean there would an eigth English club in European competition. If they win the Europa League and finish in the top 7 we will only have 7 English clubs in Europe as they will have qualified through their domestic achievements.
In short we need to finish in the top 7 and hope Aston Villa dont get to the cup final if we finish seventh and they finish eighth.

Even if we finish 8th, whatever happens with other teams, its looking likely that we will get a place because the EPL is comfortably in the top 3 Euro leagues for fair play this season. This was passed by a BBC journo on Wednesday

Just out of interest (or maybe not)...things are closer than the bloke with bad breath in the crowded lift...
I have us finishing 7th on goal difference, literally three goals from being fifth...
I'm not going to mention the other lot but the news turned out bad (for us) again on mere goal difference...

If we can maintain current form, I'm confident we can finish above at least one of four clubs above us which, barring an FA Cup win for Portsmouth I believe, will be enough for us to qualify for the Europa League in 7th.
