Another long-term injury!

Just heard on Radio 2 that Dan Gosling is out for 9 months!! Is it me or do we get more than our fair share of these type of what I would call reckless challenges (by the opposition) resulting in long term injuries to our players? — Victor springs to mind.

Does anyone have the stats with regard to how many of our players have suffered these type of injuries as opposed to how many of these type of injuries our players have subjected opposition players to?

I know people blame Dan for poor first touch and goalies have to do what ever they can to keep out a shot but am I alone in feeling that Hahnemanns challenge was reckless — I know that I would have a pretty good idea that if I throw my 14 stone? (Hahnemanns weight — not mine) on to an outstretched leg, I am likely to do some serious damage to it — imagine if this sort of challenge had been by an outfield player or on an Arsenal player.

Another long term injury?!! and a serious one at that. it's unbelievable how unlucky we have been this last year.

Arteta, Jagielka, Anichebe, Yakubu, Fellaini, Gosling have all now had very serious injuries. Not to mention conciderable lay offs for Neville, Osman and Vaughan. Something isn't right, we must have angered the footballing Gods!

I was only thinking today, that I cannot believe that we have not had an update from the Official Site on the condition of Dan Gosling only to go on the BBC to find the below.

Begs the question .... why was he left on the field? and what damage did that foolish decision add to the length of his injury?

Just heard on SSN that Dan Gosling has ligament damage and will be missing for 9 months. Typical Everton luck, but would like to know what my fellow TW'ers think of the news? Big loss or no big deal?

Personally I am disappointed as I hate to see any of our players get bad injuries, but especially the younger ones. What do you think?

Just seen on the OS that Gosling is out for 9 months with a ruptured cruciate ligament. We really are the unluckiest team for injuries. I'm not his biggest fan but I'm gutted for the lad. I wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully Mikel and Jags can be an example to him.

The Goose, yet another long term injury, I know it’s not as important as Arteta, Jags, Yak & big hair but it does mean once again that we have less choice from the bench to try & change the outcome of the game, the likes of Manure.

Sorry just living up to the moaning Everton supporter, but is it surprising with luck like this?

Thomas, yeah I couldn't really understand why he was left on the field when obviously injured. I know we were going for the win and had no subs left, but it still seemed crazy at the time especially with only 5 minutes of the game left.

An unfortunate injury for young Gosling. I, for one, hope he comes back physically stronger and hungrier for a regular starting position.

On a different note, does anyone know how long his contract has left to run? I read somewhere that his contract was extended last season until 2012 but elsewhere I have read that Standard Liege were interested in signing him as his contract was up in the summer.

If he is out of contract in the summer, I guess this injury is likely to put any move on hold until he recovers.

I think it is harsh to blame Hanneman for that - he is a goalkeeper and he has every right to come out to block the shot. He smothered the ball at Dan's feet. Seen those kind of saves thousands of times and in most cases both parties walk away just fine. Think Dan is very unlucky.

Didn't he do some damage to the same knee in Greece? Had he healed fully? Conjecture, just hope the lads gets well soon.

I think the big issue is why he was left on. Surely the physio could've diagnosed a worst case scenario there and then which should mean get him off at all costs. In saying that, the damage could have already been done but it still seems like a very poor and selfish decision to leave him on.

At least this time it's happened to one of our less important players. In the past, it's happened to our best players.

Yakubu scores 20 goals then gets injured for a year.

Jagielka is our best defender and gets injured for a year.

Arteta is our best player and gets injured for a year.

Gosling won't exactly be missed anymore than we missed Anichebe.

I think his injury in Greece was a hamstring.

What is puzzling me is why they are so sure that the prognosis is 9 months out. When Arteta's and Jagielka's injuries were diagnosed, they were both expected to be out for 6 months, and then complications delayed their returns. If the Goose's minimum period is 9 months, it must be very serious indeed.

Poor kid. He's experienced the amazing highs of winners against both horrible red teams but now a terrible low ... that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger though... speedy recovery Goose lad.

Yeah, best of luck to Gosling. Killer blow. As others have mentioned though I don't think we can really blame Hahnemann - looked a straightforward save to me.

I just found out I tore my Meniscus (knee cartilage) and I might need surgery. Look out, we're all cursed, players and supporters alike!

It's really a shame to hear this, though. I thought Gosling was really making progress this year, the highlight of which being the goal against Man U.

I guess 'The Goose' would be wise to sign that new contract that has been on the table all season now.

He was going to leave on a free at the end of the season, until that unfortunate knee injury on Saturday.

When I watched the game, I was disgusted he was allowed to stay on the pitch after that injury, he was in agony. I'd say it's likely that those extra few minutes of running around severely worsened the ligament damage.

I'm a massive fan of David Moyes, he's a hero to me, but when he waved Gosling back on to mark space. I remember thinking 'This is fucking madness!' That has proved a REAL error of judgement and has cost poor Dan Gosling dearly.

Phil and Co. The decision to leave Dan on did not cost him dearly. It was the impact of the keeper into him that cost him.

With these types of injuries, once the damage is done it is irrelevent wether the player continues to hobble around or not, he could not have caused further damage. Granted he was in pain so it was very brave of him to stay on.

Mind your re-hab son. You're back just when we'll need you for the fight at the top of the Table. Be getting back just as Donovan does. Give opponents a couple more things to worry about.

But first: Chin up Gozz, be patient, get back. Even in the super-high speed collision world of American grid-iron football, guys come back from your injury.

Sad news for the Goose. But with today's medical advancement he should be in good hands. It's all about discipline and monotonous rehab now.

He's got age on his side. Best of luck, get back stronger and he'll probably be more street-wise too. Protect yourself. COYB

This is shocking news, isn't that 3 cruciates and 1 achillies rupture in the last year??

One quick point, I don't know how he carried on (as when I did mine last year there was no way I could have carried on) but he couldn't have done much more if any further damage as, once its ruptured, its ruptured. I actually had a couple of weeks off and returned to training and even made a goalscoring substitute appearance before collapsing again!

It's a strange injury, very serious for a sportsman but if you didn't play sport or do anything too physical you could leave it and just build up the muscles around the knee to make up for it.

Can't really blame the keeper either, it was an unfortunate challenge that a slightly different decision from either player would have had a totally different outcome. Best of luck and a speedy recovery, Dan!

Not having much luck are we. I really feel for the lad as he's another one who has only ever done his best by Everton, scored some great goals and has, in my opinion, great potential as an attacking central midfielder. He has done brilliantly in his age group for England and I'm sure he's destined to have a long career in football at or around the highest level.

I thought at the time, watching the game, that the Wolves keeper got away with a assault charge.He just took Gosling out.

I wonder what would have been given if someone of the Yak's build went into the keeper in the same fashion?

Could be the end of the Kid's career - if not in whole, certainly at the Blues.

I hope he recovers, and recovers well. But even some of the best players were never the same after an injury like this one.

According to the OS he did his medial as well. They can't operate on his cruciate until this has healed which would explain the 9 months prognosis.
