I haven't noticed any comments on this:- In all £67.1M passed hands between the 20 top-flight clubs and agents for the period October 2009 to September 2010 - £3.5M less than the previous 12 months.

I thought the same thing - how can we have paid such large agents fees without buying or selling of note?! They're higher than the amount we've spent on players by a stretch!

The answer is simple: That money was spent on the services of Arteta, Cahill, Osman, Hibbert and Saha's agents.

I for one believe this is not only essential, but an excellent value for money service, paying some parasite half a million pounds so he can sit down next to one of our multi-millionaire players during negotiations and look out for his interests so he doesn't get ripped off by Bill Kenwright. Fair's fair. Stop complaining!

Surely you arent suggesting that the players pay their agents out of their own pockets?! Give them a bloody break.

You really can't but admire Ian Holloway and Blackpool, can you...

£45,000 in agents fees, attractive & expansive football AND higher than us in the league.

Jimmy (#2): the beauty of it is that the players ARE paying the agents as well. They get fees from both sides. Gotta love that job.

Gerry, the 51 pence was paid for the bag of peanuts that Pienaar was eating, and then splattered the wall with when told how much of a pay-rise Arteta was getting!

Because many managers have agents, the poisonous cartel will continue. Professional representation in negotiation is fine; duping the people who pay, ie, the fans, is disgusting.

Whilst I have no sympathy for Man Utd, I am glad that Ferguson effectively called Rooney's agent a twat, it is his sort of activity that needs addressing. There is no need for this sort of money to be going to agents.

Was assuming that we'd be in the lower half of this, but I suppose quite a few big money contracts were up for renewal.

Still, look at the Shite though, what kind of crap did they get for their £9m!

Gerry (6): Hilarious! Can we be sure that Hibbo has an agent? The man tries his hardest every time he gets on the pitch, but surely still the contract extension offer which he signed recently was a 'take it or leave it' offer? Please tell me it was.

Payments for agents' fees are staggered, in the same way as transfer fees are. So much of this sum can be attributed to deal done prior to this year e.g. Bily, Heitinga and Distin tansfers from 2009. Plus (as others have pointed out) the fees for new contracts given to other players over the last year.
