Five goals, a pitch invasion, and Everton finishing with ten men; who said pre-season is meaningless? On reflection, the details count for little as fans came to pay tribute to Tony Hibbert. The defender notched his first Everton goal and a horde of supporters ‘rioted’ as they promised. Despite his goal, Hibbert’s competitive goal drought remains at 309 games.

Whilst Hibbert took centre stage, Steven Naismith went about impressing the Everton faithful. The Scotland international registered a first-half hat-trick with a series of smart finishes. After 39 seconds, he had his first. Steven Pienaar’s fabulous pass allowed Naismith to lift the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper into the net.

AEK equalised shortly afterwards, putting a temporary dampener on proceedings. Dimitrios Sialmas found space on the left and fired a cross into the area. Distin could only hack at the ball and Taxiarchis Fountas lashed a fine finish past Howard. Fountas, AEK’s youngest ever player at 16, can add a Goodison Park goal to his résumé. Everton restored their lead soon after as Baines and Pienaar’s corner routine resulted in a far post header for Naismith.

There were glimpses of the vaunted Naismith – Jelavic partnership with Naismith firing narrowly over. Before half time, Everton increased their lead with Hibbert trying his luck from 25 yards. From the resulting corner, Naismith bundled in his and Everton’s third after a Fellaini header.

Naismith drilled a cross-shot across the six-yard box as the interval approached. After the break, an AEK forward missed a glorious chance, heading wide from six yards. Jelavic’s effort lacked power as he tried to add Everton’s fourth.

Ten minutes into the second half, Everton’s fourth arrived. Few pre-season goals have produced such dramatic celebrations. Players mobbing players, fans hugging players, fans jumping on fans and stewards tackling fans – it could only be a Tony Hibbert goal. Hibbert’s 25-yard free kick went through the wall and found the corner of the Gwladys Street net. Chaos ensued with fans and players in equal states of delirium.

As the pitch invasion grew, the club asked fans to return to their seats. Oddly enough, the fans obliged rather easily. The AEK players looking bewildered as they watched from the dugout. Play resumed but the continuous substitutions proved a constant disruption. Gueye lashed a volley wide and Vellios fired over as the game petered out. All of the Everton substitutes managed to stretch their legs at some point.

There are a few minor headaches for David Moyes ahead of the visit of Ferguson’s men. Ross Barkley looked sharp but weak defensively with Marouane Fellaini sorely missed in the engine room. Pienaar and Osman were the standout players whilst the Heitinga – Distin partnership continues to impress.

However, those issues can wait as this match was all about one man. The fans turned up to pay tribute to a loyal, dedicated and committed player; a rarity in the modern age. Entering and leaving the field to a guard of honour, this was Tony Hibbert’s night.

Great report. Great Result. Great Rioting.
I think it's fair to say the feel good factor is back with a bang at Goodison.

Okay AEK weren't a great team and Malaga will provide a much sterner test, but the players are looking sharper each match and some great combinations occurring all over the pitch.

For once the club has done what we've always asked, get it's major transfer activity done early and keep the side settled.

We've removed non-core players in terms of Yobo (finally) and an aging and increasingly less impactful Cahill (although if we'd had the cash then I admit he could still have been kept as a great super sub and a dressing room motivator).

We've acquired what appears to be too class attacking act, in Naismith and Pienaar to support the proven predator Jelavic.

And, so far at least, we've kept hold of our major assets (Baines and Felliani in particular, but also Jelly and Heitinga).

Sure we could do with one or two more options (and I'd be surprised if we don't add a couple of frees or loanees before the window closes, ideally a wing-back and right winger), but generally I'm feeling that this has been one of our best summers on the transfer front (and doubly so if you wind in the January buys).

Can't wait to get the season started, but first up Malaga. COYB!

Luke the starting line-up looks like it might be what Moyes considers his first XI. How did they line up? Was Naismith in the middle with Jelavic or did he play wide on the right? I'm assuming he was central given that he scored a hat-trick. Does that mean Osman played on the right?

Denis, I read somewhere that Moyes withdrew Hibbert with a minute to go to let him leave with the crowd's appreciation... I guess by that time he had used up all his subs?

A good performance and a bit of relief after the Blackpool shambles. The team had a good shape and - yes, we know it was a friendly - things were working. Fellaini, Pienaar and Baines down the left were back to business as usual and the newbie blonde scot had a decent half. There will be many a Prem side wondering what to do about him and Jelavic in the coming months.

Gibson, one of the few who did look match fit at the seaside, and was playing well, was withdrawn early so I would guess that he has a niggle. We definitely need him for the Man U game. Neville will be involved of course, but more likely at RB or on the bench if Gibson's fit.

A night to remember, with Hibbo written all over it. And the goal? Something he could have done ten years ago if someone had thought about it. As easy as tickling trout in Huyton.

According to Moyes, the 'people on the park' ruined it.

That is certainly one way to look at it.

But then again so is 'fuck off you miserable presbyterian old woman'.

By the way, anyone know who (at 6 mins 17 secs) Neville tells to 'fuck off'?

Mike,

I originally though the same, when I saw the team but it was slightly different. Naismith started on the right, drifting infield, with Osman alongside Gibson and Fellaini behind Jelavic. Osman had a great game but Fellaini was totally wasted further forward, he couldn't get into the game.

Naismith's understanding with Jelavic is sharp and Naismith offers a genuine goal threat from the right - something we have been lacking.

Denis,

Hibbert was withdrawn with a few minutes to go, to get a standing ovation, and we'd just happened to use all the subs so we played out the remaining minutes with 10.

Gibson went off first half. Hopefully, it was safety first and nothing serious. Especially as Neville, his replacement in the middle of park, was very poor.

Overall, we're still a few players short. Neville later moved to left back and looked uncomfortable there as well with one awful tackle summing his night up.

We're also short out wide. We started with Pienaar and Naismith wide and we had Coleman and Gueye for the second 45 - a right back and a forward. Both players have potential but they aren't midfielders. Looking at the bench, we have some youngsters with great potential but we need a little bit more.

If that is what he said then what a bellend, try chilling out, it was a bit of fun with not an ounce of malice, when the announcer told them to get off they did, it was a friendly with a friendly atmosphere and Hibbert has come out and praised the fans himself.

Eugene - judging from the position of Neville, it looks like he was talking to Pienaar

Thomas, maybe Pienaar said 'Now I've signed my deal, I have two things to tell you - one, God is great, two, you're shit'.

Is it my wine-soaked imagination or did the club promote the 'If Hibbo scores we riot' slogan on the OS with a Sex Pistols punk style poster? Perhaps Moyes wanted a bit more pogoing from the faithful.

The people on the park ruined it.

Miserable comment from our manager, typical of his miserable demeanour.

He would put years on an antique, bring a tear to a glass eye.

Hibbo scores.

The matchday forum will never be the same. The terminal cynics will be changing their scripts.

Is Hibbo now on a run (I recall Phil Neville used that line after scoring)?

@Keith,

You are correct – I got a card through the post in that style with "If Hibbo scores we riot" on it.

Chris, Great shout. I asked that as well. To be on the EFC website last week saying he was fit and ready for action, it's very strange he wasnt involved at Blackpool as well as last night. Could he be off??? Id prefer he went instead of Baines.

Making your Goodision debut, scoring the first goal of an impressive hat-trick inside the first minute. Surely a legend in the making? Steven, I've seen it all before with a certain Tony Cottee... just one will do on your debut, a 94th min tap in against the Mancs. 1-0 will do very nicely.

If however you feel the need to bang a hat-trick in then feel free.
