I’ve spent a glorious morning trawling through the websites reading the analysis and comments from last night – it’s very rare such praise is heaped upon the Toffees by such a wide spectrum of pundits and supporters. The general feeling is that Everton deserved their victory over Utd last night and that they were outplayed in long periods of the game. And I agree, last night’s win was indeed a result to savour – and a performance we have been crying out for all summer!

But then I read a comment posted by a supporter in response to Phil McNulty’s review on the BBC website that I found somewhat depressing and reminded me that – despite all the joy football can provide – the sport is still suffering its demons that the summer Olympics have so demonstrably highlighted.

The comment suggested that in the away section of Goodison Park last night, Man Utd fans, frustrated by their team’s performance, started chanting at Everton supporters making reference to the Hillsborough Disaster. When, I ask, is this continuous need for supporters to use the death of former football players and fans killed in tragic circumstances as an aggressive form of ‘banter’ going to cease? All it does is show an underlying hatred that exists in the sport – which burns so deep that a section of fans from most football clubs feel the need to refer to deaths of men, women and children to make their point.

There are an element of Everton fans who are just as bad – particularly when we pay at Anfield. Whether it’s ‘Murderers’ directed at Liverpool supporters in reference to the Heysel Disaster, the outstretched arms in the guise of a plane directed at Man Utd supporters in reference to the Munich Air Crash, or whatever the fuck it is people chant about when making reference the Hillsborough Disaster and 96 people being crushed to death – this type of crowd ‘banter’ has to be taken in the same vain as racism by the authorities and the FA and the ramifications have to be the same.

Enough, I say!!!

Editorial note: It should be noted that reports of these "Hillsborough" chants apparently started on Twitter and have not, to our knowledge, been verified by anyone who was there.

The problem Sam, is that some people are just fucking ignorant.

Not only are some ignorant, some are deliberately looking for a fight. It's time that these 'fans' need to be rooted out, and given life bans. That measure would stop a lot in their tracks before they make an ill-advised decision. My personal preferance is to make Duncan Ferguson head of security along with Vinnie Jones and Joey Barton. Nobody would make any comment with those three manning the ground!

Sam, nothing more needs to be said about the issue. It's a stain on the game. Anybody who wears our colurs and partakes in such a practise should not be allowed through the gates of Goodison or receive tickets for the away section when Everton are on their travels.

Load of rubbish, I was right by the away fans and could easily hear the songs being started off by them. There were no chants even asttempted to done regarding Hillsbrough.

I was in the Bullens and heard nothing, in fact I forgot utd fans were even in the ground they were so quiet.

I was a few rows down in the Paddock and did not hear anything like this. In fact I think the MU fans were pretty well behaved apart from the constant and ignored requests for them to sit down.

I take the original point but I also think that things like this should be verified before you start off on a pontification route based on a comment from a single anonymous poster on a website.

My son and I were in the Lower Bullens. He pointed out to me the Utd fans singing, "We can't stand up because of Liverpool." — A reference to stadiums being all-seater because of the Hilsborough tragedy.

I sat two seats away from the Manu fans and did not hear any abusive chanting - quite different to the last time they were over.

The only chant they did that pissed me off was when they were asked to sit down and they sang ' we are Manchester United we;ll do as we like' and ignored the requests.

In cases like that I think the FA should slap them with a hefty fine. It did not affect Evertonians but the view of some of their own young fans was plainly
impaired.

David I can't for the life of me concur with your comments that the United fans were quiet - they sang throughout the game, refused to sit down and only started their childish anti scouse songs when they were 1-0 down and knew that they were not getting back into the game. Seem to recall that their allocation was also cut for this game due to previous problems with fans standing despite warnings to remain seated. My opinion - wankers the lot of them !

Peter #222, the thing about Utd fans standing has been going on for years. They do it at OT, but of course if you happen to be in the away end, and refuse to sit down, you'll be out on your arse before you can say "inconsistent stewarding".

As regards the Hillsborough chanting, I don't know how that originated, but it has been debunked by numerous people who were there. It's just as easy to start a rumour about fan behaviour as it is about Owen signing.

Owen's signing?

Absolute and total rubbish. Lies. I sit in the Park End right next to the away fans and there was no such chanting.

So you saw a single comment on the internet from one anonymous poster and you decide to write an article about it and use it to bring this subject to attention even criticising some of our fans. All this after we're just had a great win. Absolutely ridiculous, unneccessary and is taking away from the actual game.

Never heard a peep about Hillsborough at all.

They may be thick but they know the difference between red and Blue.

I was at the game on Monday and I didn't hear a thing. However, regardless of whether or not this actually happened, I don't think we need to criticise Sam for posting about this.

It wasn't a single anonymous poster on the internet, it was rumoured widely yesterday and Sam is commenting, that's all. Whether or not it happened on Monday night, the comment is valid. It happens all-too-regularly across at stadiums across the country, and I have heard some horrible chants from Everton fans in the not-too-distant past.

Songs about deaths at matches, on aeroplanes, players babies, racism, homophobia etc are despicable and have absolutely no place in the game.

Those who do sing these songs are the ones taking the more positive aspects of nights such as Monday away from the game, not those commenting and being offended. Sam's post certainly doesn't take away what was a tremendous night, performance and atmosphere.

I sit in the corner of the away end by the away fans and never heard this and never saw anyone passing comment that they had too, a load of bollocks.

We've just beaten United first game of the season. The chanting didn't happen and the original poster based his article on one comment on the BBC wesbite. Fact. There was none of the so-called chanting you describe. Therefore not even relevant to discuss. End of.

I agree with the sentiment that such songs are out of order. I wasn't at the match though and it appears no such songs were sung.

Some of the songs sung in derbies now, i.e. about Steven Gerrard's kids and murderers etc, are so bad I find it embarrassing.

Sam, probably best not to base your posts on those of others, especially if (in my American stylee) you weren't there mannnn!

The one shout that I smiled at, was the return of the "You're just a fat little knobhead", childish but I like it.

I think the biggest issue is the Anfield issue. I have noticed it, screams and chants of killers murderers, even on chat rooms. The point is that it happens and it is tasteless, and how is any of this relevant to football being played on the pitch?

Disgusting, it is not banter, it is crazy talk.

Feelings run high in football, but there needs to be a line somewhere. Calling fans murderers is going too far.

Having said this I did not hear anything from the Man Utd fans, so we should treat this as a general call to grow up.

I'll be honest, I was right next to the away section in the Bullens and heard nothing that bothered me. I thought it was funny when 4 or 5 Mancs came up to the fence in a "come and have a go" stance at the end and an Evertonian jumped up and went BOO! in their faces and they jumped a mile! They seemed really annoyed and embarrassed afterwards, Priceless!!

It's still fresh in my mind Southall and Grobbelar, players from both Everton and Liverpool attending the funeral service of the victims of Hillsborough.

As far as I can remember, the Everton players were just if not more sad despite qualifying for the FA Cup Final.

It's a tragedy that struck everyone — not just the Liverpool clubs

A football game is a setting in which people give vent to their primal instincts. Moralising is likely to prove counter-productive. If some idiot shouts obscenities during a game, you should either ignore the bastard or thank fate for according you the opportunity to learn a thing or two about human nature.

Things said or shouted during a game may be beyond the bounds of propriety, but they are often well worth a giggle. I recall an Everton game during which an Evertonian shouted something obscene to a Charlton player; nobody was amused and the guy kept his mouth shut for the rest of the game.

As a serviceman of many years, I have survived largely on banter, piss taking and general sarcasm among my peers to get on in life as indeed most people have. We all say things in the heat of the moment and then hopefully move on. But the one thing that I cannot abide is the two RS dickheads who managed to get into Goodison for the last derby game with a banner that reads Steau Bucharest European Champions 1986 ! They were probably not even born in 1986 and the thing that really galls me is that there is not even a hint or irony!!! As a previous poster said that if someone around us says something which we don't like, we either say something or the silence is so deafening that they don't continue. I suppose its too much to ask of them...........

More than enough said by you Sam.

A poster says that Sam is not wrong to post on this subject beacuse there is a known rumour. Maybe - but if he did want to post he should have asked for evidence from fans who were in a good position to hear - and anyone who has read this thread will know they all said they heard nothing of the sort.

Instead Sam got on his soap box based on the rumour being true and then - self-satisfied - he claims 'enough said'.

We'll decide on that Sam.

Can't for the life of me remember anything like that. Mainly because I was concentrating on the match. I do remember the PA telling them to sit down. I wouldn't put it pass them for the former and the only way to stop the latter is to cut their allocation. Or how about a good old Bizzie snatch squad, beloved by our slow thinking friends from the past!
