I am as delighted as anyone connected with Everton Football Club that we were able to add further to our squad in this summer transfer window, it was through desire & effort on the part of all of those involved. They pushed hard in the transfer window on a number of targets and it is fortunate that on this occasion we were able to conclude acceptable deals to bring these targets in.

A summer window which brought in three young, but significantly talented starters in Steven Naismith, Kevin Mirallas and Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe as well as two exciting young potential stars of the future Matthew Kennedy and Ben McLaughlin could hardly be deemed a failure as we build for the future.

Nor should anyone minimise the importance of keeping our best players during this window. We successfully retained Leighton John Baines, Philip Nikodem Jagielka and Marouane Fellaini-Bakkioui. We greatly appreciate their faith and belief in the club. And we successfully negotiated new, long-term contracts with Philip and with Marouane.

No-one should doubt my commitment to the club. In David Moyes we have a talented young manager and we have valued highly his judgement about the make-up of the squad. This is still a work in progress. It will take a little more time for Davey to instill his philosophy into the squad and build exactly what he needs for the long term.

The transfer policy was not about cutting costs. It was – and will be in the future – about getting maximum value for what is spent so that I can build quality and depth. I am an avowed proponent of Uefa’s Financial Fair Play agenda that was this week reiterated by Mr Platini – something I heartily applaud. We must comply with Financial Fair Play guidelines that ensure spending is tied to income. I have been successful in improving the commercial side of the club and the monies generated going forward will give us greater spending power in the coming years.

We are still in the process of reversing the errors of previous regimes. It will not happen overnight. It has been compounded by our own mistakes in a difficult period of ownership. It has been a harsh education, but make no mistake, the club is healthier today than when I took over.

Spending is not merely about buying talent. Our ambitions do not lie in cementing a mid-table place with expensive, short-term quick fixes that will only contribute for a couple of years. Our emphasis is on developing our own players using the skills of an increasingly impressive coaching team. Much thought and investment already have gone into developing a self-sustaining pool of youngsters imbued in the club’s traditions.

That ethos is to win. We will invest to succeed. But we will not mortgage the future with risky spending.

After a long period at Goodison Park, we are close to having the system we need in place. The transfer window may not have been perfect but we are not just looking at the next 16 weeks until we can buy again: we are looking at the next 16 years and beyond. These are the steps needed in restoring one of the world’s great clubs to its proper status.

It will not be easy, it will not be perfect, but there is a clear vision at work.

We will build and grow from within, buy prudently and cleverly, and never again waste resources on inflated transfer fees and unrealistic wages. We have no fear of spending and competing with the very best but we will not overpay for players.

We will never place this club in the precarious position that we found it in when we took over at Goodison Park. This club should never again run up debts that threaten its existence.

Most of all, we want to win. That ambition drives every decision. It is the Everton Way. We can and will generate the revenues to achieve that aim. There will be short-term setbacks from time to time, but we believe we have the right people in place to bring more Glory to Goodison.

Finally, I can say with authority that our ownership is not about profit. Contrary to popular opinion, owners rarely get involved in sports in order to generate cash. They generally get involved with a club in order to compete and work for the benefit of their club. It’s often difficult. In our case we work every day in order to generate revenues to improve the club.

We have only one driving ambition at Everton and that is the quest to win the Premier League playing the kind of football our supporters want to see. That will only occur if we do absolutely the right things to build the club in a way that makes sense for supporters, for us and for those who will follow us. We will deliver what every long-term supporter of Everton Football Club aches for.

Bill Kenwright, CBE

When you put the Everton connotations in to this John Henry letter it jars like hell.

Whether JH delivers or not is another matter, but he's not even a fan and he's tuned in to what LFC fans want.

Although I have to admit I wonder if Evertonians match kopites in their ambition these days.

Owen just signed for Stoke.. Dreaded him joining RS and banging one in against us next month !

Barry, I think Evertonian ambitions are as high as ever, we just hide them a little more nowdays !

Bill Kenwright — the next 16 weeks to buy again... hahaahaahaah, never laughed so much in my life! We didn't even spend all the Rodwell money, he's been at the club fucking 12 years!! How long does it take to sort out the previous regime?

We're skint and cannot compete with the big clubs anymore is what he's saying, he's trying to be subtle but spectacularly fails.
The big banners will be out before Christmas I reckon, big huge fuckers extolling the virtues of H&G, King Kenny and Regal Rafa.

Jon -

Would Bill's state of the union speech included the bit that goes like this that was edited from Mr Henry's effort

'the club is healthier today than when I took over.

Except that someone tells me that 50 million of your English pounds went missiing somewhere. What happened? Oh, I was involved in a deep and meaningful relationship with my secretary at the time? OK, we'll leave that part out.

Spending is not merely about buying talent ....'

I think the club has had once of the best transfer windows in recent history. We all wondered if Blue Bill would cough up after the Rodwell money. He spent more than I estimated. Still doesn't excuse the fact that previous millions are unaccounted for. I hope it's a sign things are more stable with the banks. Probably not.....

It makes me laugh that the Shite aren't happy about Carroll going. They wanna try to losing 5 first team players like we did in 2011!

Ha! Imagine if Bill had just had Henry's transfer window. Top performers and fans' favourites like Kuyt and Bellamy out to trim the wage bill. Under-used talent like Aquilani actually costing the club money to get rid of. Joe Cole still raking in £6 mill a year. Transfer record signing being loaned out without a replacement because the offer was £2 million less than Aston Villa's. A patronising letter to the fans to follow it up.

Imagine if that had been Bill. As it is, Bill's allowed Moyes to trade sensibly and bring in some top talent of the manager's choosing, yet is being derided for not 'tuning' into what the fans want – like Henry apparently has. Obviously it doesn't matter whether they deliver or not, as long as they bring out some jingoistic letter like this to still prove they have some ambition. Ridiculous.

The irony of Jon Brennan's work on the RS owner's message to purported 'fans' cast in the blue light of Bullshitter Bill seems to have been very difficult to decode so far. A convoluted conceit? The thread will tell.

And what the RS do with their £50 millions plus is entirely up to them. Pissed it against the wall as far as I can tell.

Bill might have sold out to the Arabs. They took the City of Manchester Stadium instead. More fool them, eh?

The Liverpool owners are absolutely right. I wish they were preared to squander money again. It makes no financial sense to spend GBP 7m on a 29 year old like Dempsey. 50% of transfers end in failure. No chance of a sell on fee. What is the potential return on investment on that - almost certainly looking at a negative return.

Now "people that understand football" will say that the owners don't get it. They need a striker and to fail to get one will write off this season. Now that may be true but blowing GBP7m, particularly is not the way to build a long term sustainagle challenge. They can get more bang for their buck elsewhere. Once the money is gone it really is gone. The chance to spend it elsewhere is also gone gone gone.

The evidence produced by firms like Deloitte shows a correlation between wages and success on the pitch. It does not show such a strong correlation between success and payment of transfer fees.

The proven formula is get good players in young. Get in a few mature players for minimal transfer fees. Keep the ones that perform up to standard by paying them well. Sell off the second stringers when you have better youngsters to replace them. If a player with a big ego wants to leave despite being paid market wages then let him go and take the money. Do not impair your ability to pay wages by blowing money on transfers for players over 28.

This is what Arsenal have done for years. OK they have not won anything, but they have been in the top 4 the whole time whilst competing against far richer clubs like the two down the East Lancs and Chelsea. They will be in the top 4 long after the Sheik and the Russian have grown bored of losing millions of pounds a year. Man U is a different story because they, the club, actually makes lots of money. In this they are unique.

I am now worried that Liverpool is being run by people that understand the finances of football - this will make Liverpool stronger. No chance that they will blow GBP30m on a player like Carroll again. Hopefully the delusions of grandeur in their fans DNA will still be their undoing. I am hopeful that after 22 years of reduced financial circumstances that Everton fans have lost their own delusions (although sometimes I wonder!).

Brian #811 - absolutely right. I enjoy listening to the local RM phone-ins. Whenever there's a new manager at Anfield (happens quite frequently these days) they all wave their palms in the air proclaiming the new Messiah. It doesn't taker long before they're planning a crucifixion.

The new RS regime may be more prudent in spending but it may be that the expectations of their fan base will be their undoing. Let's hope so.

Barry ~632 - The original post did jar when taken from an Everton perspective as it does raise questions about the expectations of Evertonians, something I wrote about a couple of years ago in a mailbag article. However, expectations can change with a couple of good results - at least for me. I still think we're on for a good season - top 4 or 5.

Away from the expectations of the fans, the main thing that jarred for me was the phrase "long term vision".

Mike (816) - There are few things more entertaining and/or hilarious than a phone-in after The Victims have lost.

After we've won and they've lost, there is nothing better than...

Know-nothing chatty host: "..ok thanks for that Tom, next we've got..Ron on the line from Ormskirk, Ron is a red - imagine you're not happy Ron?"

Old bloke: "No I...erm...HELLO...Yes I am very much NOT happy, this feller Benitez doesn't have a clue!"

Host: "You mean Rodgers"

Old bloke: "Eh?...Oh yes sorry, Rodger Houlier, he hasn't a bloody clue"

Host: "So what does he need to do Ron?"

Old bloke: "Well..um...he needs to play Stevie G in his proper position for a start like, which is..ahh....in the hole..um...just behind the diamond....er on the left...or the right....through the channels like..type-a-thing"

Host: "You don't just think it could be that Stevie is starting to slow up?"

Old bloke: "Yeah but...um....that's kind of me point like, drop him back a bit. Don't get me wrong, Daggleesh has been a great servant for the club but he HAS to go"

Host: "Dalglish has gone Ron"

Old bloke: "Eh?...Oh yeah I don't mean him, I mean....the other feller...Rafa...No Shankley....no not Shanks the OTHER feller.....We need to get back to the boot room....Big Ron, the Kop..er...Paisley...red shirts......Paisley shirts!!"

Etc blah (continue for one hour).

Eugene - I'm sure that was a word perfect transcript as it sounds familiar.
My sides regularly ache with laughter when the RS have lost and I'm listening to the phone-in. This season, I'm starting to develop a nasty snigger.

(I remember one fan coming on a few years ago threatening to break Houllier's legs if he didn't leave the club. He put it in sharper terms than that but was cut off pronto. Then we had the death threat chants against Hicks and Gillette. Contrast that with the media perception of those lovable kopites).

Michael, I think that either you or Lyndon need to make it clear for those of limited intellect that this letter had nothing to do with Bill Kenwright whatsoever. The reason I think you should do this is that in about 6 months time some dozey sods will use this letter as irrefutable evidence that Bill Kenwright is a complete charlatan. You know the type, the ones that put FACT or END OF after every statement.

If we are going to hang Kenwright then let's do it on the truth and not on some slightly humorous parody that some people are either too stupid or ill-informed to distinguish from the letter that our beloved neighbours had to suffer.

Am I having a sense of humour by-pass? No not all as it did raise a wry smile, but some of the comments afterwards had me banging my head against the computer screen at the stupidity of some of my fellow Blues. I would like to ask them if they are aware that the word 'gullible' has been removed from the English dictionary due to lack of use. What you don't believe me? Then go and have a look for yourself!

Shaun,

"... not on some slightly humorous parody that some people are either too stupid or ill-informed to distinguish from the letter that our beloved neighbours had to suffer."

I'm just bemused that there are Everton fans who have this level of interest in what goes on with the neigbours to even give a shit.

Yes, the lad had seen an opportunity for irony... but I wasn't convinced it would work — these things rarely do on t'internet. But this 'Knowledge is Power' trip so many get a kick from is fundamental to such exchanges.

Perhaps some note like: "For those who may be puzzled by this uncharacteristic epistle, please see this recent letter from J Henry addressed to our kopite neighbours..." Kinda kills it stone dead though, don't ya think?

For me, it just reaffirms what should be our position re posts that are anything to do with LFC. Just Say No.

Why are some Evertonians obsessed with that crew from across the park? It's like the old saying, "You hate Liverpool more than you love Everton." We've seen many times over the years they always come up smelling of roses and I'm sure the jammy bastards will again. Plus let's face it, it's not as if our record against them is anything to gloat about... in fact, it's fucking atrocious. No let them worry about them and we'll take care of ourselves.

I think when you live and work in the city and rub shoulders with them on a constant basis, you can't help but notice they do exist. It is similar to when people rubber neck accidents on the motorway. You know you shouldn't, but you just do. If you live out of the city or out of the country it becomes easier (but not impossible) to ignore them. Which is precisely why I am looking for work on the other side of the world.

Michael, I'm not at all obsessed with that lot (not since I moved away from Merseyside anyhow – If I lived there still I probably would be!)

I saw the letter over on TPF and read it as I would have if it had been Abromovitch or Lerner etc. Even then, I didn't read the whole original as I got bored after a couple of lines... but, even so, by the time I got to "Philip Nikodem Jagielka and Marouane Fellaini-Bakkioui" it was pretty clear it was a spoof.

Bill's a knob, yes, but come on!
Shaun had a point – some people read it verbatim and really seem to think that Bill said it – hence whoosh!

If anyone was offended by me calling them dozy gets I apologise. I just wanted to make them dozy gets to stop and reread it and think about it before they get themselves in a right royal tizzy.

Bill is keeping Mum on why he states we will but again in Jan, and with the amount of cash that is going to flood in to EFC is going to make us all happy unless that is the other operating costs sky-rocket and we start manufacturing grass cutters.

I became aware of the extra funds some weeks back but it went over my head until this week when, on SPN, a newsreader said the new deal between Sky and BT will put so much cash into every club in the 2013-14 season the team that finished bottom of league (Wolves in 2011-12 ) will receive as much as Citeh did for winning the league.

To save every one the trouble, Wolves were paid £39m, City were paid £60m so in effect in the space of 3 seasons the money will go up 40-50% depending on the final European TV rights deal that the PL do. If your not aware, the PL did 81 separate deals to screen PL games which will bring in roughly £2bn alone.

So we got £48.9m for season 2011-12 off the PL, in 2013 we will get £70m roughly — that's a massive increase. Due to our Bill being a poor salesman he and his 2 cronies are about to hit the jackpot. The question remains: Where we really for sale?" NOPE! and his comment that we will buy again in January, too bloody right he will or there will be hell to pay.

By the way, the PL are boxing clever these days... We used to do 5-year deals for the TV rights, now it is down to 3 and it is just an auction where whoever bids the highest gets the deal. There are hints that the 2013-16 TV deal could net £5-6 billion — that's a lot of cash.

Pretty soon the debt will be gone and Finch Farm will be bought back by EFC.
