During the past few weeks I\’ve noticed a hint of pessimism lurking on Toffeeweb due to the ’disappointing’ results at Wigan and, most recently QPR. I am also feeling frustrated because the performances seem to have dropped off slightly and referees seem to be snatching every spare point away from us.

Then, I stop and take a look at Moyes\’ demeanor and notice that he considers these results to be sufficient. I know every point away from home in the Premier League is a good point, but I was really thinking that we are good enough to come away with all three points these days.

My next thought was "When did we last get a win at an away ground?" (ignoring this season) and I found it an interesting read.

Here are the away results for the whole of 2012..

Wolves 0-0 Everton
Stoke 1-1 Everton
Man Utd 4-4 Everton
Norwich 2-2 Everton
Swansea 0-2 Everton
Everton 1-1 Sunderland
Liverpool 3-0 Everton (spit)
QPR 1-1 Everton
Wigan 1-1 Everton
Aston Villa 1-1 Everton
Tottenham 2-0 Everton
West Brom 0-1 Everton

P12 W2 D8 L2

It seems to me that drawing away and winning at home is enough to be the 3rd best in the league therefore I now see no doom and gloom about draws away to Wigan, QPR and the like.

My main point is, cheer up. Nothing has changed in our form throughout 2012 and our form shows us to be the 3rd best team in the country.

Just on one final cheery note.. Here are our home results throughout 2012 :) Enjoy...

Everton 3-1 Southampton
Everton 2-2 Newcastle
Everton 1-0 Man Utd
Everton 3-1 Newcastle
Everton 4-0 Fulham
Everton 4-0 Sunderland
Everton 2-0 West Brom
Everton 0-1 Arsenal (Drenthe was ONSIDE!)
Everton 1-0 Tottenham
Everton 2-0 Chelsea
Everton 1-0 Man City
Everton 1-1 Blackburn
Everton 1-2 Bolton

They are sufficient but as we all know, we are a passionate bunch of fans, who want to win every game. But again it's not possible to do that, so I can understand the pessimism when we don't beat lower half teams.

Our record from January this year (virtually the same squad) has been nothing short of a revelation in my opinion. Keeping the solid home form is really important this season, if we keep this consistency going 4th or 5th place may look like a real possibility

Its not the results just the performances. I thought a point away at Wigan and QPR were decent results but the performances were quite poor. Especially the QPR game. Maybe its 'cos this season we have shown that we can play good, attractive, attacking football and we all want that every week. But sadly that's not possible. Especially with such a small squad.

Gibson is the player who makes Fellaini tick, we'd also been without Jelavic for a couple of games and now Pienaar. When you only have 14/15 players of the quality required, performances will quickly slide when players are out, which will show up the pragmatic side of Moyes.

Nothing is bad in the Blue world of ours but I fail to get excited for the derby match on account that I fully expect yet another turgid 2-0 defeat with some reason to blame the footballing gods for giving us horrendous fortune.

It's getting 3 points away from Goodison Park that would really see us maintain / improve our chances of gaining a European berth.

I must admit I thought we had done better than that in 2012 away from home, don't get me wrong; a point is no disgrace, but if we want to achieve things we have to turn some of those draws into wins.

Having said that, 19 home wins and 19 away draws would give us 76 points which isn't a bad tally.

From the games played this season we should have 9 points from our home fixtures and 5 points away, equalling 14 points so we are 1 point to the good.

The top 3 teams City, United and Chelsea, always seem to maintain a 2.2 - 2.4 ratio of points throughout the season, which sadly we are unlikely to get close to.

Well what type of away record do previous top 4 teams have? Is it around 10 wins away a season?

I agree with Patrick, we have to take more pts away from home if we want a top 4 place and for me, we should be looking to take maximum pts from Wigan, Q,P,R.

I agree that top teams win away games, and don't think we should be settling for draws, but I don't think we do. I believe we have genuinely been robbed of 4-6 pts already this season by clear cut bad refereeing.

Newcastle and Wigan I think are obvious, and QPR is subjective but I feel very strongly that without Pienaar being sent off we win that game.

Top teams don't win every away game though. You only have to look at how many of the top sides we've beaten at Goodison this year. They're all probably talking as disparagingly about us as we are about Wigan and QPR. Chelsea lost at QPR, Arsenal lost to Wigan at home. Liverpool threw away a 2-goal lead at QPR, and lost to WIgan at home.

These teams in the Premier League are not pushovers. We probably should have beaten Wigan if the ref had been fair and a point at QPR was probably all we could get considering the sending off and the early goal against us.

Any team on their day can do to us what we have regularly been doing to the top sides at Goodison; let's not make out that we have some sort of away form problem specific only to Moyes when the reality is with the correct refereeing we would have won three and drawn one of our 5 away games this season.

I expect Everton to beat everyone at home, regardless of the opposition, regardless of the form we're in or the players we have out, every other fan of other clubs will be the same. Wigan fans will be thinking "let's have these" no matter how good our form had been to that point, this transpires down to the players making those type of away games so tricky.

Would that work out at around 20-23 away points based over a season?

Lets say you win 12 home games and draw 4 losing 3. Thats 40 points.

I did look back once and cant quite remember, but broadly speaking I think you need mid to high 60's for Champions League 4th place.

Obviously with a thin squad and being reliant on Jela up top, as for me he provides the quality to lift us, its not going to be easy. As we are all realising, a holding player is vital.

But a 2/3 draws into wins can do it if we maintain our form.

Been alot of talk about a certain cutting edgd providing American on these pages lately. If we cant do a 2/3 year cheapish deal, lets have another loan.

Can you imagine him providing for Jelavic and Fellaini?

We aint far off with our first 13/14/15 players, we just need some depth& options.

If we got him in I would be much more optimistic about having a dart at it.

You probably need about 70 points to guarantee CL football. We secured it with an unprecedented low total last time around. This equates to 20 wins and 10 draws in a 38 game season. We've had 4 wins and 3 draws so far out of 8 games. It would look a lot brighter if the stat read 5 wins and 2 draws (as it should considering the Newcastle game) we'd be a quarter of the way there.

A win on Sunday would be a massive step in the right direction, especially with most Evertonians recognising that we probably haven't really hit top form at any point since Villa away. We've chartered a course through the injuries to Gibson, Hibbert and Jelavic (as of yet) and hopefully we can do the same with Pienaar's suspension.

We haven't really been overly reliant on Jelavic's goals either (in the way that Liverpool or Sunderland have relied on one player). At some point, Gibson will be back, the defence will tighten up, Jelavic will hit the goal trail for good, Mirallas and Naismith will contribute and we'll hopefully hit some really good form... injuries permitting.

Bobby,

Since I kicked it off with stats, I thought I'd continue in this mode and be the statistician..

4th place since 2004-2005

69, 68, 70, 72, 76, 78, 67, 61 = 70pts (average) required to get into the coveted places.

I also totally agree with your comments re Donovan. I'd have him back in a flash. Be it for 4 games or 4 seasons.

Whatever your stats say, Liverpool will not escape Goodison without at least a point.

Well, 70 it is.

That means we need to add roughly 15 points on recent seasons, but the home form is already much better.

I think if we can get players back, stay amongst it and maintain the home form then we can get to Jan and try to boost the squad with a couple of players for the 2nd half of the season. It would lift the players as well.

As it stands I think its abit too much for our squad, we need a miracle with injuries, Gibbo seems fragile for one. If we boost things in Jan though we could have a go.
