I haven’t posted for a while. Thought I would do a David Moyes and judge us after ten or so games. I must say, I can’t believe all the moaning on here after what has been a dream start by our usual standards.

Okay, I agree we should’ve won a few more games than we have done and the officials have tried to ruin our season but we’re used to that now — it’s what always happens to Everton!

Twatkinson and Co will never give us a fair rub of the green so we just have to suck it up and carry on. The terrible decisions we have to put up are nothing we haven’t seen before. Refs don’t like us... FACT!!!

So far this season, some of our football has been amazing to watch and as Moyes says he would pay to watch it. I agree; for the first time in 10 years, we are trying to play proper football for most of the game. We are amongst the top teams in Europe for chances created according to Opta stats, aren’t we?

We are sitting in 5th spot, just a few points out of the Champions League places when, this time last season and most other seasons, we have been in the bottom six in November... How can we complain with that statistic?

Now I am not suggesting we are nailed on to finish 4th but at least we are in with a shout.I have seen nothing to worry about with our main challengers for the 4th place finish. Spurs, Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool are all struggling. If we could just add one or two players in January you never know what might happen.

I think that most of what pours out on TW is just frustration at what should’ve been a much better start to the season but, let’s face it, all the teams are losing silly games, not just us. Man Utd lost at Norwich and Chelsea at West Brom on Saturday despite both being odds on to win those games.

We lost Gibson who had become our lynchpin and Mirallas, who is pure class at important times, yet we have still kept up our form — even if drawing matches we should of won.

We are attacking sides from the off these days and it does leave us susceptible at the back at times but sooner that than the awful shite we have had to watch in the past! We are exciting and dynamic and look like scoring every time we get the ball. When was the last time you could say that about an Everton side?

Whatever the outcome of this season, at least we can say so far we have had a go at winning and tried to play the game in the correct manner, therefore giving fans value for money. I never thought I would say ’entertaining football’ and ’Moyes’ in the same sentence but what do I know?

The best is yet to come if we get Gibbo and Mirallas back and maybe the kid from Belgium in January to bolster the midfield. I am just enjoying the ride at the moment. It’s the best Everton team I have watched since 1995 so I cannot find any reason to be negative...

No Hoofball equals happy fans in my book. Winning a trophy or staying in the race for 4th place would be a welcome bonus but with such a small squad it would be a miracle.

I am no longer looking for the Jack Daniels after every game, I can see massive progression this season and long may it continue.

Give the lads a break and remember how bleak the footy was only last season. Paul Merson said we were like Barcelona at Fulham... This was Everton he was talking about.

There are far too few swearwords to be a Marsh post.

I feel I am going the other way, as I am starting to get pissed off more with our players and their inability to have a dig at goal.

The ticka takka is all well and good as long as there is an outcome.

The School of Science re-born, Tony. Good to hear that positive attitude again. Moyesie should cut and paste your assessment up in the changing room for all to see. What is next on your agenda, Tony – Hibbo for England?

Well said, can't disagree with any of it.

Will be interesting to see how we get through the Arsenal, City and Spurs run that's coming up, if we are still within touching distance of fourth following those games then I, for one, will be very very happy!

Apart from the bit where a five-year-old took over your keyboard and typed the third paragraph, I agree completely.

But December will tell a lot. How will Moyes approach the big boys, especially away in the case of City?

The football has been good at times, Tony, with a bit of luck, the rub of the green, more focus at crucial moments within the game (à la Fulham) and Reading and more clinical finishing up front we could also be challenging for the title.

The realists kept responding to us whingers "get real" "we're skint", "different world" and other trite phrases.

In various ways, the likes of me and Tony were arguing that you don't need a billionaire backer to play decent stuff exemplified when, by accident or design, the players became, in flashes under Moyes, more expansive in style and ambition.

This time last year I was going to the match out of a sense of loyalty and habit – God it took an effort at times.

This season has been for the greater part an absolute joy in comparison – looking forward to each game and knowing that we have a good chance of seeing a performance of flair, effort, and, dare I say, swagger.

Was Moyesy restricted by having a squad of total duffers who've suddenly morphed into the good team we're seeing now with just the addition of a few new faces? Maybe... but it's also possible the manager's outlook and ethos have changed.

Somewhere in between the two, I suspect, but what a difference we're seeing – it'll do for me – for now, til the School of Science reopens.

To be fair, and I've been as annoyed with Tony Marsh as many people, his criticisms are usually along the lines of us not playing the way we are currently playing.

He's got what he's asked for, and fair play to him for coming on and saying so.

Phil, over 12 months the squad has changed an awful lot. Its not really 'this season', its since the new signings first started to look bedded in back in February, although the addition of Mirallas has kicked us on even further.

I'm actually gutted we don't have 5 more points than we currently do, but like I've said elsewhere before, we now have the problems of a not-quite-consistent-enough top 4 side who miss out on wins, rather than of a desperate mid-table side grateful for every point they can squeeze out.

I didn't click on this post at first. Solely because of the author. Then I got bored and thought 'why not?' To my surprise, overwhelming positivity, right after a loss no less.

I agree with you, Tony. I think we are in with a shout. I honestly think we could realistically end up anywhere from 2nd to 7th really. Too early to tell exactly how good we are. If Gibson is healthy for the remainder of the season and Fellaini stays past January, we can do even better than what we're expecting.

19 Posted 20/11/2012 at 18:25:08
Granted Mike, the personnel have changed but not City-style: 8 of the pre-Christmas 2011 team are still playing regularly. Jelavic, Gibson and Pienaar started the upturn but, as you say, Mirallas has been the style and panache catalyst this season.

For a squad of, in reality, 14 quality players, we are not doing badly... If only the Board could get in line; surely with the guaranteed TV increase, we could scrounge enough to improve in January without "doing a Leeds" or selling you know who.

Spot on tony 100 percent agree.. We all know we wont win the league we all know we probably won't finish 4th... But what I wanted to see was a team that I was proud of, a team that played footie the right way the beautiful game the way it should be. Major for Everton, Brendan, give you that... but the basis of the team remains. The arrival of the January three seem to have produced an upturn in style and attitude that few of us saw coming – all down to Moysey and his eye for talent? If so, keep it up.

Tony Marsh, don't think you'll find many dissenters we play proper football and the results improve.

If Moyes had put his Decisive head on earlier the Bily money could have been freed earlier similarly with Rodwell, never mind he's catching on now.

What are you on about Phil? I wouldn't say you and Tony are realists. I would say Tony Marsh was at one end of the spectrum being very negative (apart from this post which is very surprising) and Richard Dodd is the other end of the spectrum being over-the-top positive, the truth and the realists were somewhere in-between. The realistic truth isn't Moyes's change in attitude, it's his change in personnel because of the extra bit of money he had to spend.

• We have lost Cahill who was past it, and replaced him with Fellaini who has stepped up another gear;
• We have lost Bily who wasn't good enough, and replaced him with Pienaar and Mirallas;
• We have lost Rodwell who was very overrated and replaced him with Gibson who was very underrated;
• We have lost Saha who was past it and replaced him with Jelavic.

We now have better attacking options which equals a better attacking threat.

Welcome back Tony! I hope the team continue to give you reason to write with such positivity and keep on playing in a manner, which, let's face it, you have been crying out for us to play for the last decade!

A little bit more luck going our way and we could and should be sitting very securely in the Champions League spots right now. Let's get the fire in our bellies for the visit of the Canaries and start climbing again toward those dizzy heights which I no longer feel we are not worthy of.

Barry (#462):

If Moyes "had put his decisive head on earlier" the Bily & Rodwell money would have gone to the banks, not into team rebuilding. Moyes played it to perfection... held on to his surplus assets until he knew the money would be available to him to fund new players & then swooped to take advantage of Rangers' difficulties & Pienaar's discontent at Spurs. Something of a transfer masterclass... should be required reading for up-&-coming managers.

The best of the rest, this could be as high as 3rd, whether we will be that 3rd is in the lap of the Gods, but we could with a bit of luck, it's that near.

The whole point of my version of The Moyes Out Brigade was that we should've been trying to win, not trying not to lose .

As a MOB foot soldier, ( note; not former, the uniform is still in the back of the wardrobe incase of any backsliding ) it annoys me that some of the opposite (at the time ) ilk still have a go when some one praises the team. They didn't / don't see that their Moyes right or wrong under any circumstances was part of the problem. It gave the powers that be a free ride to continue to do nothing.

Like others I saw the title and expected a gloomy negative post full of criticism and the odd swear. A pleasant surprise.

Its amusing and perhaps predictable that the previous Moyes detractors are saying 'See? Why didn't he do this all along?' and his supporters are saying 'See? He is a good manager."

The Premier League is very tight this season and it seems that home advantage is counting more than ever for alot of teams, especially West Brom. Lets hope this trend extends to us and if we can beat Norwich and Arsenal at home in our next two games we should have a good platform to deal with a very tough December.

If we are within touching distance of the top 4, or even in that position after we play Newcaslte on Jan 2nd, then we are in with a great chance.

I don't think Arsenal are half the team they were, Spurs are struggling, the redshite will finish 8th again, so this is our best hope of top 4 for many years.

As Tony says though, I am just happy to see us going for the throat in games - the direct opposite of our playing style the last few seasons.

If we don't make the top 4 fine, but we are at least seeing value for money from all concerned.

Great post Tony. Always respect people more when they are willing to change their opinions on something/someone rather than stubbornly pursuing a certain line they have always taken.

For what it's worth I see Moyes as the ultimate pragmatist. If he has a team full of cloggers he will play to their respective (albeit very dull) footballing strengths. I think that what we are seeing this season is a team (our strongest 11) that ticks all the boxes: attacking full backs, ball playing midfielders, wingers with guile and genuine pace and forwards who know where the net is. As a direct result we get the football we have demanded.

The great shame is that if we don't make the top 4 two key components will be lost, Fellaini and Mirrallas. Lads that deserve to play at the top level. Unless Moyes gets that money to re-invest we may revert to the pragmatic bad old days of hoof ball.

So,over to the self-proclaimed greatest Evertonian to supply some proper funds and to tie Moyes down to a new contract.

Watch this space...

Great article. We got 20 pts from 12 games — if we can repeat this return over the next 10 games, we will be safe with good old 40 pts and then we can push on in the last 16 games for say 30 pts that would give us around 70 pts and perhaps a top 4 finish.

I would have thought Tony would have said, "We should be top!!" - he has been uncompromising in his stance in the past. Moyes himself said in Goals on Sunday that he was disappointed we weren't in the top two. Referees have a lot to answer for (Newcastle/Wigan/Reading) but we laso need to finish better and concede less. Gibson might help with the latter. Good post, uncompromising and honest.
David Price
45 Posted 21/11/2012 at 09:40:48
Well balanced article from Tony. Yes it could go pear shaped but realistically we have a good enough side not to let this happen. The biggest miss is Gibson. He seems to protect the back 4 and read the play superbly. The injury to Mirallas also a set back. If we can stay in the mix around January i'm starting to rely on Moyes coming up with gems for the run in and again finish strong.
4th place? Anyone one of the contenders streets ahead us?
Tony is right we have a hell of a chance and not by sneaking a goal then hang on, it's with attacking football, we just need the players to believe and be ruthless in front of goal.
A decent ref every now and then wouldn't go amiss either.

Totally agree, we really have missed Gibson; I am so pleased he is nearly 100% fit again. I think the Neville Injury might be a blessing in disguise for us. Phil is 100% committed and as the club captain he is hard to drop. But, now it has been forced on us, we can play our best 11 when everyone is fit and give more game time to Ross Barkley.

Against Norwich, we will be without Fellaini but for the Arsenal game I hope we play:

Howard;
Coleman, Jagielka, Heitinga, Baines;
Osman, Gibson, Mirallas, Pienaar;
Fellaini,
Jelavic

That in my opinion is our best 11 at the moment.

Brendan 486, very good that I actually laughed out loud.

It's the factual spin I like, when you spoke to Moyes, Kenwright and the banks did they actually say:

"Guess what the plan is, Bren?"

"The hint is we polish the bench for nearly 2 years with 9 million quid then do a sort of pincer movement when everyone's completely fucked off!!!!!"

Put your ideas in Xmas crackers — they'd be a riot at parties.

Kevin @519, to be honest we should be a lot closer to the top of league than we actually are. Without mixture of poor officials and some inconsistency on our part Man City could easily be looking down on us. But then again inconsistency seems to be the key word in the Premier League this year.
Tom Bowers
50 Posted 21/11/2012 at 14:00:36
Whilst it is too early to say where they will finish, one thing is certain they will have gotten there by playing much better football than in previous seasons which makes them more watchable and harder to beat.

Moyes has done quite well with his signings over the last year which has given all fans hope of a top four finish.

The problem is getting injuries and suspensions like any other team and coping with the poor refereeing that sometimes denies teams like Everton from getting points when they are so obviously deserved.

We all know Fella is such a key player now and he should know that himself and curb his recklessness sometimes which gets him booked more than most players.

He is now more of a target for crude defenders but much like Big Dunc. He has a past reputation which referees seem to get influenced by.

Jela needs Fella in his new supporting role and we hope it does not affect the Norwich performance.

If Moyes can get a couple more dependable loanees in January then I feel we can finish at least fourth.

I find myself nodding in agreement to a lot of what you are saying. I still feel that we are some way off a top four team. My conclusion is drawn up of the following factors:

1) We haven't played anyone yet. December is a shocker of a month and I feel the draws against teams we should of battered will come back to haunt us.

2) Hopeless at the back (including Howard who is getting worse by the week). No team that can't keep a clean sheet will challenge top four.

3) Lack of killer instinct, and inability to put teams to bed, this has resulted in too many points lost.

We have improved footballing wise A LOT. But playing better football and having 6 million shots at goal still wont hide the fact that when TOP teams are on top they take advantage. We are far too sloppy at the back and miss too many chances. My prediction : 7th

Well said, Tony Marsh. In my opinion, Tony gets it spot on most of the time, and is one of the most passionate contributors to this site. All he has ever asked is for the Blues to play an attacking brand of football, and make an attempt to win every game we play. His criticisms have, I believe, been justified and he gives praise where and when it is due.

I have been hugely critical of David Moyes in the past; however, I am happy to eat humble pie as the current football he is serving up is a joy to watch and is in keeping with the expectations of our loyal supporters.

Bloody hell, Tony! it only needs Doddy to `get his cards back`and the two of you could stage a love-in. In spite of the weasel words in this article, the headline sets out the real truth in that all we can hope for under the BK regime is to be 'Best of the Rest' — and that to me means 6th/7th.

However improved the football has been, only a fool ignores the fact that we lack a cutting edge and I don`t see the ex-Rangers in our midst as providing that!

Reasonably good XI? Yes, But I`m struggling to name 15 players who are anywhere near top level — and that will be our undoing. New contracts for Neville and Distin says it all to me about the ambition of our club so BOTR it is, Tony.
Sam Higgins
56 Posted 22/11/2012 at 12:46:31
I don't think 4th is unrealistic. If we stay injury free and keep the suspensions to a minimum, it can be done. But, whatever I think, the overriding feeling is watching Everton at the moment is actually a joyful experience — and that's the most important fact — that us, the fans, are entertained. 3 points from Norwich and we'll go on another run; we always perform against the better teams.
