I think that most fans would agree that we still don\’t have enough strength in depth at present, even with the two recent transfer windows. Unless we sell a big name player in January, I don’t see us having the funds to buy big again and further strengthen. With the momentum we have at the moment, the last thing I personally would like to see happen is for us to sell someone like Fellaini or Baines to raise funds. Even though we could bring in two or three quality players with the money raised, it may take too much time for them to bed in and the season may just fizzle out.

I think we got lucky with how quickly Jelavic and Gibson settled in last January. It was a different situation then and the new players injected the fresh impetus that the squad had needed at the time. There had been little or no transfer activity over the last couple of windows up to January and the timing of bringing in fresh players was perfect.

For me, this January is more about providing backup to the core group of 14 or 15 quality players currently on the books. The younger fringe players aren’t doing this at present. If I were David Moyes, I would be looking to sign free agents. Hitzlsperger showed on Saturday that he can adequately do a job in the starting XI and I don’t see why this can’t happen with other players.

We would also be signing from a position of strength. With the way we are playing, and the position we are in in the league table, we would be attractive. We could pick and choose, we are not desperate for numbers or a supposed big-name signing. Stoke made a big fanfare out of signing Michael Owen in the summer, yet for all his talk of holding out for a big club, no-one else wanted him. What has he done for Stoke since?

I do also think that if there are decent free agents available, they are going to be picked up very cheaply. At this stage of the season, many free agents may waive a signing-on fee and their wage demands may not be that high. If we do have a limited amount of cash to spend, paying the wages of two or three players signed on short-term deals could be done.

The rules around squad limits may mean that we would still have to sell in January to make space but some of the squad players may already be viewed in this way by Moyes. Like I said, I don’t think some of them have made as much of a mark as we would have hoped for.

The timing of Barkley being recalled is perfect. There will be plenty of potential game time for him between now and the first of January. He may make a difference before the transfer window opens. We may start the second half of the season with a fully fit squad. At the moment, it is looking like Hibbert, Mirallas and Gibson will be available for the glut of games between now and the start of January.

I do think looking to add proven players with enough experience is something that we will need to do. Finding the right freebies may be a huge challenge. If anyone can do it though, I think that Moyes can.

Not sure they are free agents, more players with either 6 months or 18 months left, that are available cheap with the holding club prepared to cash in (Gibson, Pienaar) than let walk for nothing.

I would happily take Huntelaar from Schalke, but I reckon he's RS bound – shame.

Huntelaar will probably make his final career move; I doubt it will be to a club not in the Champions League.

I can't think of any real players available currently on a free, Holtby I understand is come the end of the season. Maybe a cheeky bid in January?

Anyone know a good website to look at players for this?

I've heard Ronaldinho's contract at Atletico Miniero ends on January 1st.

You may be pleasantly surprised in January ;-)

Nick, don't mention Royston Drenthe... you'll only start Jimmy off on one.

Ian, that's an avenue I hadn't really thought of. I had typed the piece up this morning and hadn't given the idea that much thought. I'm sure there are plenty of bargains that fall under the category of only having six months left on their contracts. I think that it may still cost you in terms of signing on fees though. However, if it meant more of a bargain than forking out several million then go with it.

Nick, if Royston offered us a signing on fee I wouldn't have him back. We would need to be wary of why a player is a free agent, or is being offloaded on the cheap. Players like Drenthe often serve as a cautionary tale. Like I said above, we are currently in a position where we don't need to take a gamble like we did with Drenthe. For all the ability a player like this has, the way in which he would need to be indulged may not be worth the effort.

Some are when loans finish rather than underlying contract.

Gibson`s career record shows him to be serially injury prone- that`s why we got him as the final payment on the Rooney deal. Therefore an an extension for The Bergerman is a no-brainer. Almost alone,I think we are still thin up front and that should be another priority if we are to really make a challenge for top five. Those who think we can achieve that without re-inforcements are sadly deluded!

Phil, if I was picking positions to prioritise I would also go with extra bodies upfront. Velios may be considered a prospect but he's not getting games or scoring. Neither is Anichebe getting games or scoring. There must be a reason for this more than just because Moyes likes one up front. Yes, we are creating chances but we are not taking enough of them. If the current players aren't taking enough of the glut of chances we are creating then action needs to be taken. If either Jelavic or Mirallas are off form or not playing, we are reliant on Felliani, who can also be inconsistant. A top four team will have four or five players looking to hit double figures goal wise. Newcastle, despite how well they did last season, are very reliant on Demba Ba to get them goals. Spurs, despite how well they have done in recent years, seem to be very reliant on Bale and an inconsistant Defoe this season given how many players they recently offloaded.

An extension for Hitzleberger would certainly seem to be a no brainer.

Phil #823, the payments on the Rooney deal had been fulfilled at least 30 months before we signed Gibson, so we would've paid the £250k or whatever it was separately. The £7m of incentives related to MU winning the League, Champions League and FA Cup, as well as Rooney signing a new contract - all of which were fulfilled.

The only possible extra payment is if Man U sell him on at a profit, we would be entitled to 25% of said profit. However I think it's not being churlish to suggest that Rooney will not be sold at a profit. His physique suggests that his powers will wane (pardon the pun) quite quickly in his 30s, and either he moves further back and adapts his style, or leaves the game to count his millions.

Even with the paucity of the current squad there are still options but it depends how ruthless you want to be for instance a lot of fans remark that if you could combine Coleman's attacking play with Hibbert's tackling skills you would have a good right back.

So why not sell them both you could get 4M plus and save about 50K in wages which you could use to get a good right back replacement, a drop in numbers but an improvement in quality.

Sean # 835, who is the £4 million full back you have in mind to replace Coleman and Hibbert ?

Andy

Would it surprise you if I said no idea off the top of my head but if Oviedo a 22 year old international with CL experience can be bought for less than 2M I am sure there are right backs aplenty for double.

Andy - not a shit one like Hutton, foley or any other guff like them. Iraola of Bilbao is a class right back.

Sean, it would be the drop in numbers that would worry me. I would prefer to sell a couple of fringe players instead of regular starters. It is a fair point about Oveido though. There are serious bargains to be had out there.

I think we could do a lot worse than trying to pry Di Santo from Wigan. He's a little flakey, but he has an unpredictability that is the polar opposite of the metronomic Jelavic.

A year ago he could have gone for $3m, but he's got some recognition since. Would $5m do the job?

Why does anyone rave about Di Santo? He's ball greedy and shite, his goals per game and assist ratio are garbage. If you want some cheaper class look outside of the UK, Europe has loads of decent players

Gavin, a chance to play in the premier league, so that you can earn more and raise your profile, is a huge incentive for younger talented players. Clubs in europe know they can't compete with the premier league and I am always surprised at how cheaply you can pick up their players. If Mirallas had moved from one premier league club to another last summer he would have gone for 10m at least.

Ian #884, isn't that an oxymoron?
