So it’s nearly that time of year again, when on the last day of January football fans spend their day constantly checking websites, forums, text messages and, of course, tuning in to Sky Sports News to watch an over-excited Jim White take us through the final few minutes of the ’action’.

This is January transfer deadline day. A day when we all get excited with the hope that our club will announce a couple of exciting new signings and pray that none of our best players will leave for pastures new.

But what about Everton? Since the transfer window was brought into effect in the 2002-03 season, Everton have signed/loaned a total of seven players on the January deadline day and sold/loaned out five players. That’s a surprisingly low amount of business done by David Moyes on what is one of the busiest and most frantic days of the football calendar.

We’ve experienced the highs of last years deadline day which saw Nikica Jelavic and Steven Pienaar arrive on the same day the Blues beat Manchester City 1-0, the arrival of a Spanish midfielder called Mikel Arteta in 2005 and we’ve had less exciting days which have seen Anthony Gardner (who?!) brought in and times when no business at all has been done.

With only five months remaining on David Moyes’ contract this could be the most important deadline day in the manager’s ten years at the helm of Everton Football Club. Below is a list of all the deals done by Everton on January deadline day since it was introduced.

2011-12 — IN: Steven Pienaar (Spurs, loan), Nikica Jelavic (Rangers, £5M). OUT: Louis Saha (Spurs, free).

2010-11 — IN: Apostolos Vellios (Iraklis, £250k). OUT: Joao Silva, Kieran Agard (both loans).

2009-10 — IN: None. OUT: None.

2008-09 — IN: Jo Alves (Man City, loan). OUT: None.

2007-08 — IN: Anthony Gardner (Spurs, loan). OUT: Anderson De Silva (Barnsley, free).

2006-07 — IN: Manuel Fernandes (Benfica, loan) . OUT: Mark Hughes (Northampton Town, free).

2005-06 — IN: None. OUT: None.

2004-05 — IN: Mikel Arteta (Real Sociedad, loan). OUT: None.

2003-04 — IN: None. OUT: None.

2002-03 — IN: None. OUT: None.

Nice job, Chris... Although we've been working on the Transfers database to handle the pesky loan deals a little better, and I'm not sure we've fully upgraded all the files yet. Hopefully there are no errors... but I'm sure someone will let us know!

Michael, didn't we sign Darron Gibson too last January.

How about Philippe Senderos on 2009-10?

Of course, also how about Landon Donovon twice?

Yes, Jay (#432), we did... but on the 13th — not on Deadline Day.

Yes, Adolf (#434)... but Senderos joined on the 23rd — not on Deadline Day.

Adolf (#435),

Donovan joined Everton on 2 January 2010, 4 January 2012.

Not Deadline Day.

I reckon we will have at least two new players in by the end of the week. A midfielder and hopefully another striker, though i'm not sure how easy it is to find a good striker on loan...

Darren Bent on loan would be nice.

Stuart Holden at Bolton has only till summer on his contract. Surely worth a small fee? Competitive, tough tackling midfielder, would be useful to us.

Good shout, James. He's a consistent performer, and he's got a fair bit of skill, too. A Moyes type of player, I think. Holden was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League at one point, but he had a couple of injuries and now he's languishing in the Championship. It's just the sort of deal Moyes would do.

Anthony Gardner, now that was a strange one.

Manny Fernandes. Enjoyed watching him.

Yes, a good point about the Landon loans - as it was during the MLS break he was able to join straight away, as soon as the window was open. All those clamouring for him now, aside from "Why?", by the time we'd got him in, he'd be half way through the actual loan period.

I don't see Fellaini leaving in this window. I think it will stay the way everyone has said it will. If we get into the Champions League Fellaini will stay here for next season. If we miss out on the Champions League we will be selling Fellaini to a Champions League club. So if we sell him over the summer we get a very good return on him. Not really that bad of a situation.

No more P Neville in central midfield?!

Why does it not surprise me that we cannot sign a quality player, only free and rubbish ones like Naismith. Goodbye to top-six finish.
