I’ve noticed quite a few references to the reign of Walter Smith in recent debates from the pro-Moyes camp, comparing the Moyes saviour idol to Walter the Disappointment. Personally, I think Moyes is reverting more to type than anything new we saw in brief flashes earlier in the season, with overly defensive formations, poor substitutions, and games where defeat has been snatched from the jaws of victory — sounds and looks like the last days of Smith all over again

I remember the Walter days and many more managers that went before him, some incredibly poor by comparison. I also remember Smith being rightly castigated by loading the pitch with defenders all over the place. Moyes’s version is to simply have all of his players – no matter what their role – to defend; every single opposition set-piece has 11 blue shirts in or around our own box. If a blue shirt clears the ball, it comes right back for a second bite of the cherry and makes counter-attacks nigh-on impossible.

Now, how about those last days of Walter, taking it from the start of January 2002:

1/1/2002 League Middlesborough (A) 0 - 1 Loss
5/1/2002 FA Cup Stoke City (A) 1 - 0 Win
12/1/2002 League Sunderland (H) 1 - 0 Win
19/1/2002 League Spurs (A) 1 - 1 Draw
26/1/2002 FA Cup Leyton Orient (H) 4 - 1 Win
30/1/2002 League Aston Villa (A) 0 - 0 Draw
2/2/2002 League Ipswich (H) 1 - 2 Loss
10/2/2002 League Arsenal (H) 0 - 1 Loss
17/2/2002 FA Cup Crewe (H) 0 - 0 Draw
23/2/2002 League Liverpool (A) 1 - 1 Draw
26/2/2002 FA Cup Crewe (A) 2 - 1 Win
3/3/2002 League Leeds (H) 0 - 0 Draw
10/3/2002 FA Cup Middlesborough (A) 0 - 3 Loss

That gives Walter:
2 FA Cup wins
1 FA Cup draw
1 FA Cup loss
1 League win
4 League draws
3 League losses

Moyes record from the start of January 2013:

2/1/2013 League Newcastle (A) 2 - 1 Win
7/1/2013 FA Cup Cheltenham (A) 5 - 1 Win
12/1/2013 League Swansea (H) 0 - 0 Draw
21/1/2013 League Southampton (A) 0 - 0 Draw
26/1/2013 FA Cup Bolton (A) 2 - 1 Win
2/2/2013 League Aston Villa (H) 3 - 3 Draw
10/2/2013 League Man Utd (A) 0 - 2 Loss
16/2/2013 FA Cup Oldham (A) 2 - 2 Draw
23/2/2013 League Norwich (A) 1 - 2 Loss
26/2/2013 FA Cup Oldham (H) ???

That gives Moyes:
2 FA Cup wins
1 FA Cup draw
1 FA Cup still to replay
1 League win
3 League draws
2 League losses

The last months of Moyes’s reign to me are history repeating with a real worry about the Oldham game. Smith was royally shafted by his Chairman who promised him money from the NTL deal — only for it to never appear and force him to sell his players off. Moyes has had much longer than Smith to realise the cloak-and-dagger lies from his chairman.

Smith rightly went in the end as he was bereft of ideas and the games each week saw more and more defenders all over the pitch, whereas Moyes just plays his players all defending. Moyes — being BK’s long time human shield — the situation is different this time around... but, as BK has shown when he shafted Paul Gregg out of the club, don’t put anything beyond BK to save himself by any means necessary.

Gavin, as usual you are bang on here! One things for sure Smith wasn't on 4 million a year and he didn't get 11 years to parade his brand of negative football like Moyes has. Between them Kenwright/Board, Smith, Moyes they have bled the life out of Everton Football Club. The football for over 15 years has been dreadful on ther eye and it's board are happy just to sit on their fat arses and collect premiership prize money.they are all Parasites!

To use a Kenwright saying - 24/7...........EFC is a joke.

Great work Gav, even without the stats it's hard to conclude anything other than the stench of "nowhere to go" with Moyes.

The cup is Moyes lifeline but if Oldham or more likely Wigan turn us over that's his lot - Walter and Boro reincarnated.

Didn't Walter spend the NTL money early, only it wasn't delivered? Simonson springs to mind. Yeah, Steve Simonson. £6m.

Why has Jelavic not scored since December?
What does the Baines-Pienaar double act actually do?
Anchibe out so what about Vellios?
Why have strikers at Everton lost the plot? (Johnson, Saha, Beattie, and even Yakubu were proven goalscorers until Moyes fucks them around...)

After 11 yrs we want change, a return to pure football. To give the kids a chance, to rest players out of form, to see some players are not good enough and to bring the age of the squad down. Moyes wants Neville for another year... Why???

Gav, I just don`t feel we`re `in the last days of Moyes` as so many on here believe. Whatever we may think of him, his future will not be determined by what appears on fan sites anymore than the justified character assassination of Kenwright has done anything to hasten his demise.

Basically, only results `do for` managers and with the team in 6th position and there still being talk of Europe, Moyes in under absolutely no pressure. All our griping (and I`m one of the worst!) will go unheard (and unread) unless and until we suffer a string of defeats from now until kingdom come... and what true Evertonian wants that to happen?

No,I expect Davey & Bill to soon agree on a roll-over type contract which will allow the manager to leave if he gets a better offer. Then, each of us will be faced with the decision whether or not to renew our tickets.
And, of course, most will!

Excellent article, Gavin. What is sad for me and difficult to explain is that positivity has paid dividends for Moyes yet he reverts to type. Tired players and lack of finance doesn't account for us hanging on against Oldham and Norwich nor does it explain bizarre substitutions.

Just looks at the mans body language and his pre and post match interviews, how the fuck does he motivate any player is beyond me, he takes dourness to another level. The drivel he comes out with is so predictable, say something different man for gods sake apart from we should have got a second goal or we played well in patches. Every time he peddles the same shit out time and time again, why because he has no more excuses!

There is no comparison, under Walter we looked to be finishing in the bottom 7 every year, under Moyes we look to be finishing in the top 7 every year. Its so covenient to just pretend the first half of the season didnt exist to suit your argument. Why not consider the whole season , wouldnt that make more sense?

How was the NTL deal considered as the Chairman 'royally shafting' Walter Smith? I thought NTL made promises to buy £30 million of shares, but did not deliver because they went bust?

And you talk about Paul Gregg like you know him. But if you are honest, you have never even met the person, and the only things you know of his relationship with Bill Kenwright is what you have read on this website.

Ha! Conveniently left out one of our wins!

So in total 4 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses. Not exactly doomsday stuff!!

Think people comparing Moyes to Smith must have very short memories or more likely a real axe to grind. Maybe we are in a bad rut but the standard of football and selection of players simply does not compare at all!

Until the cries of "Moyes Out" ring round Goodison he is with us for as long as he wants.

If he gets an offer that will provide him with a platform based on cash to spend and a chance CL he will be off. If he doesn't he will sign again. I am concerned with the suggestion that he will do this on a rolling one year contract. That smacks of an on-going lack of commitment from DM and related uncertainty for players and fans.

I see a major re-build required in the summer; players will be sold and new players will arrive, but surely the decisions should be made by a manager with a long term commitment to the Club ? I don't see a year to year contract cutting it in this regard.

There is one thing you could compare Smiths final days with us to Moyes's if he goes at the end of the season, he will be leaving the next manager with an ageing squad and a ton of work to do.

Ian and Sam, the leaving of the West Brom result was a hands up error on my part but the point of the article is about Smith's last days, from the start of January up to that dreadful game against Boro, if you want to be that pedantic the Smith figures go through to March and Moyes doesn't. Moyes is slipping back to type with his woeful anti football dross, his long odds game of defend, defend and more defend is tired and terrible on the eye and what's more unfathomable given the play put on by the very same players at the start of the season. Who is ultimately to blame for that? The players, yes some responsibility but who selects them, who keeps them on the pitch and who subs or rather doesn't sub them? Who is ultimately responsible for the formations and tactics on the pitch and that other trite line of who sees them every week at Finch Farm?

How old is Coleman, Oviedo, Jelavic, Mirallas, Gibson, Fellaini, Anichebe, Duffy, Heitinga, Barkley etc, etc?

If Moyes leaves at the end of the season, his squad/first XI will look a hell of a lot different and more importantly miles better than the one he inherited. To compare the last days of Smith is just a joke. Moyes came in and we expected relegation and to start again, we stayed off relegation and haven't looked like being relegated since. The new manager will be expected at least a top half finish every season, not just save us from relegation, as was Moyes' s first job.

Gavin Ramejkis @183

Gavin, to be fair, the football we've played for much of this season and back half of last season has not been "woeful anti-football dross,", compared by Wenger, for instance , as excellent and likened by Jol to Barcelona. Moyes biggest faults, to my mind, is his woeful use of substitutes and his habit of slipping back to his old negative mindset but to say that we have been as negative as you make out is untrue.

Furthermore, to try and absolve the players of their fair share of the blame is somewhat disingenuous. True, Moyes picks the team but if the board had provided some financial backing in January instead of looking for a way NOT to buy Fer we may have had more quality to select from.

All the shouts on here for fringe players to be given a chance backfired against Leeds, but, for some reason, playing them was still Moyes fault. Damned if he does; fucking damned if he doesn't.

If Jelavic misses a sitter I don't know how that can be Moyes fault. If Distin makes a bad tackle that is also not Moyes fault.

Brian Waring
22 Posted 24/02/2013 at 17:35:47
Ian, it's a squad game, and out of the squad of players we have, Howard, Pienaar, Hibbert, Distin, Jags, Osman, Neville ( most of them are first 11) that's 7 players who are all getting on and will need replacing sooner than later, and thats a fair few players, and you can't gaurantee that the young lads are going to be able to step up. How many of the young lads under Moyes have come through the ranks? Also, Fellaini will be gone in the summer, and whilst not old, old, isen't Heitinga 29? He'll probalby go as well.

Just because Moyes' first job was to "save us from relegation", doesn't mean that what we are witnessing now is adequate. Smith started from the same point as Moyes but was not afforded 11 years to achieve it.

Whilst Bill is a wate of skin, Moyes' tenure has occured at a time of record TV receipts and affluence, which has allowed him something that Smith did not have. The ability to wheel and deal.

And Tony, how old are Distin, Neville, Howard, Hibbert, Osman, Baines, Jagielka.....etc?

Tony J Williams
28 Posted 24/02/2013 at 17:49:33
Brian, keepers play until they are forty usually, Neville will/has been replaced by either Gibson or Coleman, Pienaar still has a good few years but his replacement is Oviedo, Hibbert see Coleman and add Stones to that, Osman replaced by Mirallas, Jag's by Duffy. You were saying?

Brian most of the players I mentioned are in the first team and in their prime, my point was Moyes has quickly reduced the age of the squad in a couple of season selling two of the older players and bringing in 5 players in their prime in their mid 20s Jelavic, Gibson Mirallas, Oveido, Naismith, and 2 youngster with potential in Kennedy and Stones, an was very close to bringing in Fer in his early 20's. We could sell Fellaini next season and with the money easily relace the likes of Neville Distin and Heitinga with younger players and still improve the side further

Ray, the way tp introduce youth players is by surrounding them with old heads so not the en masse changes the Leeds game had as there's no one then to show them how to correct any mistakes. Moyes is responsible for keeping out of form players playing and has done for years, how long did he keep Saha playing despite the fact he couldn't score in a brothel or Cahill when he was way past his sell by date?.He's done it before with square pegs on round holes not working but stuck stubbornly hoping for god knows what to change. If Moyes wants to change its down to him, he has shown glimpses at the start of this season and those small bursts the team has unbeaten when more often than not no faces actually change. The board didnt provide Fer but is that the sole standing excuse to play Naismith or Neville or Heitinga when they are clearly not good enough anymore or would Fer have played all three positions??

There isn't a player in the league that doesnt make mistakes but to make them week in and week out and still play IS most definitely down to the manager selecting them over an alternative.

It would be churlish to pretend things have not improved under Moyes, but it also needs to be acknowledged that he operated under a far more stable regime than Smith and has had more money available to him. Personally , I cannot sanction any defence of Smith , purely due to the Tranmere debacle, which is by far my worst day as a fan.

My bug bear with Moyes is the same old failings that appear when we seem to have something in our sights. Go back to the 'Magnificent 7th' (gulp!) season and even then we were fourth with six games left. We lost to all those around us plus a woeful display against Fulham and ultimately came short . Insert the majority of big cup and Euro games and what threatens to happen this season ,then nothing seems to have changed.

Ray Roche, it's all very well having great form at the end of a season, but these great runs of forms have come when we are so far back after very poor starts we have not threatened the top spots. The form at the start of this was great, but again when the pressure to deliver is on, the tactics and selection turn to tripe again.

Now, even to finish top 6, we will need to get results at grounds we never win at. I pray he proves me wrong and wins us the cup, but I am not holding my breath.

Nick, #170 , if you see that the article uses tenuous connections to connect Moyes with Smith then you will understand why I find it excellent. Walter Smith has long gone and yet some Moyes supporters still refer to him in defence of Moyes.

Moyes has had eleven years since and must be judged on that. We have played some great stuff in the last twelve months yet now it seems to me to have an end of days feel to it. I feel that the best times for Moyes at Everton have passed yet we were so nearly there. I believe that the appalling transfer window has sealed it for Moyes, Everton and the supporters. It just feels like the end of an era.

It takes something special from a manager to motivate and inspire to win trophies.. The amount of times Everton have been knocked out of Cups by lower league teams is crazy!!

Al , Martinez wouldn't be my first choice but Everton have better players than Wigan and have had for some time. I think that Martinez might be excellent without the 40 points total being his only aim. The difference is that for Martinez that aim is realistic for Moyes it is deeply unambitious.

If I was a Villa supporter I'd love to have Moyes instead of Lambert because he would without doubt keep them safe. If I was an Arsenal fan I wouldn't want him ahead of Wenger.

Gavin Ramejkis @221

Gavin, blending young and old IS the way to blood young players ...if they are good enough. I would like to see youth given it's chance as much as anyone on here but there appears to be a question mark regarding some of our younger players. Duffy, Barkley, Vellios....give them a chance, please, but not all at once, as some posters on TW seem to want..
I think that the Fer fiasco was never going to happen, BK didn't have £8m to spend and if we did , why not by a couple of players in the same way as Newcastle managed to do? And £3m on Stones? It's players who can do a job NOW that we need. You are bang on the money about the multi-tasking, square peg business, though.
"but to make them week in and week out and still play IS most definitely down to the manager selecting them over an alternative. " True, but I'm struggling to think of viable alternatives who wouldn't bring down a dogs abuse on the managers head if they don't perform.

It's such a pity that Kenwright didn't manage to pull off the Kirkby stadium project, because there he could have consigned all semblance of Everton FC to the history books. Mind you there are a few people on this site doing it for him. What have the following managers got in common? Bingham, Lee, Harvey, Walker and Moyes. Answer - none of them got us relegated but all of them lowered the standards that had been set previously and none of them won a trophy. From all of these managers in what order would you put them?

It is only since Kenwright bought the club that Everton fans truly fear that the likes of Oldham or Wigan at Goodison will end our FA Cup hopes, my god how far can this club fall from grace without losing its top flight status.

Does DM pick players due to where they appear on the payroll or does he pick them on ability? From where I'm sat it looks increasingly that it is how much the players receive in wages that determines whether they make the team or not.

No wonder the players are such a friendly and happy bunch at Finch Farm, pick up loads of dosh, give halfhearted performances, don't break sweat and no pressure to do anything but to survive in the top-half and if you can look the best player in the team, you might get even more money from a club who play in the CL. All aided and abetted by a manager who's more interested in feathering his own nest rather than sending out a team that truly represents the spirit and desires of those who pay to watch this once great club of ours.

Chris, Like it! I am a Moyes fan but I can see his failings. His stubborness regarding his 'favourites' can't do anyone on the bench any favours where confidence is concerned, but maybe it is the attitude of those 'squad' players that is wrong. You would have thought once they got their chance they would take it with both hands, but very rarely anybody does. The constant transfer window fiasco's are a disgrace and to not show ambition this time when we witnessed the lift it gave us last year, and the fact we were knocking on the door of the top 3 at the time was criminal. As for 85p in every pound goes into the Academy then I would expect to see a lot more for my money by now. Barkley can't get in the Leeds side.......and that's about it!!!!

DM's tactics are as simple as this... Don't concede too many & then lose or draw it can be called as a closely fought battle. Right now I have as much respect for him as BK who pocket OUR money from gate receipts & merchandise.

It still boils my piss every time I see Rooney play. If he'd been handled correctly we could've seen him in Blue for a couple of more seasons & got a bigger return. But no DM couldn't get him to lick his arse & BK saw the £ signs. Between those 2 we lost one of the greatest players to ever put on that shirt & to push things along & force the issue all sorts of underhanded rumour mongering & press manipulation went on.

Strikers... I can think of 3 ( present included ) being absolutely ruined by DM. We'll never get another decent one again, regardless of money whilst DM's at the helm. He is consistent in destroying their self belief & skill.

About 2 months ago, David Moyes had a 42% win rate at Everton... which is pathetic really. Since then, we haven't won a game so the percentage must have dropped...

Does any one have that stat for Wally Smith's riegn?

I reckon no other manager in the game would survive at a club as big as Everton with such a dismal win ratio. Not unless the said manager was in cahoots with the chairman and the skulduggery that goes with it.

"never compromised his footballing philosophy of entertaining football."

They got bummed off Liverpool last week after dropping 6 of his regulars.

Plus, they were pretty shite and didn't try to play football when we played them.

I don't mind Laudrup but don't try and make him out to be some amazing manager after 7 months. He could end up like the other flavours of the month that usually gets talked about on here.

Ian - 244

Laudrup has just won a trophy with Swansea that our club's never won. Amongst others he beat Liverpool at home, then Chelsea in a two leg semi and then twatted Bradford 5-0 in the final to do it.

You may challenge that with he the League Cup is Mickey Mouse, that no one takes I seriously and Bradford are cannon fodder but if its that easy how come we weren't there today?

Maybe he might not win another thing but hes already won more in one season than most do in a career and you can't take that away from him. Especially in he day he's done it.

A genuine top drawer World Class player, a very good manager it would appear and a thoroughly decent bloke to boot. Hats off to him. Well done.

To those who were asking how many times we have won a match by a single goal in David Moyes time in charge of Everton it is

94 times out of 167 wins in the Premier League.
54 wins by a two goal margin
19 wins by a Three goal margin or better the highest being a six goal margin against Sunderland (7-1)

80 defeats out of 129 have been by a single goal margin
27 defeats by a two goal margin
22 defeats by a three goal margin or higher the worst being Arsenal (0-7)

120 games have ended all sqaure

Total PL games played equals 416

Hope that's of use to whoever it was that wanted to know.

Mike, Moyes has also knocked out Liverpool and Chelsea and Man Utd in cup competitions, but we always meet top 4 teams in our semi fianls and final, its easir to knock these big teams out in early rounds when they are not taking it as seriously, Swansea got lucky that they got the lowest place team ever in their cup final.

I cant see the point of compairing Smith to Moyes under Smith he bought players that were well past their sell by date and by and large had us fighting against relegation. Where Moyes has had us mainly in the top 8 competing for Europe, and unlike Smith whose squad of old players were worth nothing if he goes Moyes will have left us with the best left back in the Prem also Fellaini will go for nearly double what we paid for him.

I think Laudrup would be a fine replacement should Moyes leave but lets not forget earlier in the season we beat Swansea on their own ground 3-0 and when they came here Laudrup played 10 men behind the ball. So would be interesting if he was our manager and employed this tactic how the T/W posters would react.

Ian Allaker.

It could be said that Moyes was lucky beating Liverpool Chelsea and Man Utd in those cups.

Liverpool were reduced to ten men and Gerrard went off injured. Chelsea were beaten on pens after a last-minute free kick got extra time. As for Man Utd... That was pens against their reserves without having a shot.

Moyes has lost in cups to Shrewsbury, Brentford, Oldham, Leeds and Blackburn,

He won't sign a contract... He shouldn't be offered one.

Decent article.

I think the comparison is a bit of a joke to be honest. Smith was an awful manager for us, and Moyes transformed the side to one competing near the top.

But I agree with your sentiment that time may be up. This is the first time for me, that I might want Moyes out. His tactics frustrated me beyond belief on Saturday, I still didnt understand not taking Naismith earlier in the second half.

I think bringing Martinez in would be a breath of fresh of air, and I genuinely think Moyes cant do much more, he's taken us as far as we can go. I do think he's the best manager we've had for a while, and despite obvious short comings, he has been a great manager for us. But we need a change, and we need to move on. So thanks for everything Mr Moyes.

Ian, Swansea beat Chelsea in the semi, winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool (the holders) away. You can't belittle his achievement in his first year at the club. He hasn't waited 11 + years to do it.

Things here are just desperately stale at the moment and we can't simply have more of the same thrill-free fare for the foreseeable future. Time to take a calculated decision to make changes - but one I fear we will not see.

In future annals of EFC the DM era will probably have a fast forward speed button.

I think that DM is a very good manager who loves Everton Football Club and desperately wants to bring success to it. I am hopeful that, this season, we will qualify for the Champions' or Europa League and win the FA Cup. Even if we do none of those 3 things, DM will still be offered a new contract; but I hope, for our and his sake, that he would decide to leave us for pastures new under that circumstance.

I can imagine the conversation between Moyes and Round before Tuesday.

Round: "Boss, I've come up with this new system, it's fucking foolproof."

Moyes: "Come on then, let's hear it."

Round: "We play a ten-man defensive wall and put that fella with the big curly wig upfront on his own and smash the ball up to him from the kick-off."

Moyes: "You mean Fellaini?"

Round: "That's him..."

Moyes: "Why is it foolproof?"

Round: "Well, if we nick one, we bring him back to defend as well; I've called it a Bomber Formation."

Moyes: "Fucking brilliant, that, Stevie boy... them Oldham bastards won't know what's hit em! Get the lads together..."

It could be argued that we were unlucky in the Chelsea final when our 3 best players were injured.

We beat Liverpool fairly, they got a player sent off for a reason justly, its not luck. It doesn’t matter if a goal was scored in the last minute against Chlesea or the first minute like in the final, the game is 90 mins plus extra time, otherwise I could say Norwich and Oldham wer lucky because they scored in extra time, you create you own luck. The only time luck comes into it is when a referee misses something or makes a poor decision, because it is a matter of opinion rather than fact. And if you look at the Man Utd team that finished the semi against us you will see its probably their strongest team at the time.

You mention the lower league side that Moyes has lost to but Ferguson and Wenger have also lost to lower league sides and so have a lot of other good managers.

Nick Waters

Christ, Ian, have you read your own posts? Man Utd had not even included Rooney and Ronaldo in the 17 man squad at Wembley!

And haven't Ferguson and Wenger made up for the odd defeat with a trophy or two? Fergie won THREE in the space of a fortnight!

There are things you can commend Moyes for, but being a winner will never be one of them.

For me, it's not about individual matches, win percentages or league placings. It's about an all pervading sense that this is as good as it's going to get.The manager seems to be devoid of ideas and the fans can see the way a game is going to end up, five minutes into the second half. We are repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

I have backed the manager (apart from last years anfield derby), up until now asserting that the biggest threat to this club is our shithouse of a chairman but the repetitive nature of the tactical failings, poor substitutions and dropped points, have taken their toll on me. I've had enough.

Ian Allaker

Nick i'm pointing out that top managers lose to lower league teams, even with far suprerior players and squads, so why do people feel the need to mention the lower league teams we have lost to?

Moyes still has plenty of years a head of him to win something, every manager would be a loser with your mentality, they would have thrown in the towel a long time ago, they all have to start somewhere. Just look at Harry Rednapp.

Moyes will have success and win some trophies, I have no doubt about that, but it will most likley be in Germany unless he is given a top 4 job here.

Andy Meighan
84 Posted 24/02/2013 at 21:31:19
Yes, we were robbed of three of our better players in the FA Cup Final against Chelsea. But got off to a magnificent start. So what did Moyes do? He tried to hang on for the rest of the game. I can't remember us creating another chance. The man is a coward of the highest order.

Could anyone on here see us going to Chelsea and winning 2 - 0? No, I thought not. Derby games are a totally different ball game completely but we don't go there and win, do we? Ever.

Laudrup has done magnificent winning a trophy in his first season but face facts I've never seen a side like Swansea park the bus like they did at Goodison this season. They only came out of their half once all game. Yes, they defended brilliantly, but imagine the uproar if we had done that. Let's all not big-up Laudrup too much until he's managed in this league for 2 or 3 seasons — and lets not forget who they played in the final today — a 4th-tier side.

Ian, the top four managers might lose the odd game during their reign against a lower league side but as pointed out more than make up for it by winning trophies and as for the top four managers they also win trophies, Moyes hasn't and he is 11 years older than when he joined Everton and no closer to winning anything beyond some pointless LMA.

As for Laudrup, the guys already achieved more than Moyes in his first season, I would rather be where they are in the league and at least win something! Sorry Tony Marsh(252) Smiths win ratio of 0.29 from 143 games combined with his drawn games means he would expect to get circa 44 points from a 38 game season. Moyes on the other hand has a win ratio of 0.40 and combined with his draws would expect to get circa 56 points from a 38 game season. He has only failed to get this total 3 out of his 10 completed seasons.
His best period was from 2007-08 to 2009-10 where he got 65,63 and 61 points respectively.

His worst season was 2003-04 with a mere 39 points.

So if he manages to get the equivalent of 18 wins and 2 draws he has hit his average. Five more wins from the remaining fixtures this season will see him beat last seasons total of 56 points.

His team selection are quite often weird, followed by his strange use of subs and then there's his haven't got a clue what to do next tactics. He seems to do better when his hands are tied through either suspensions or injuries, meaning to me that he could never manage a top-4 side let alone a German team. I will say he steadied the ship when we needed it but I am not going to spend the next 10-year living in the past and thanking him for it. Time to move on.

Colin I dissagree, some people think this is the best team Everton have had in the last 10 years. We have brought in Mirallas, Gibson, Jelavic, Oveido, and Gibson which is an improvement on last season with Bily and an ageing Cahill and an underachieving injury prone Rodwell. I think we are still moving forward we just need to add more to the squad and have greater depth and quality to maintain the standards set at the start of the season.

Your living of the first half of the season?!?!?! Good for you Ian, problem is the season is a lot longer than that and yesterday was pathetic. As for plucking stuff out of the air, well there is nobody better at doing that than Moyes, he blames everybody but himself and the board. He buys the players, chooses who plays, determines that tactics his player will use during the games yet somehow some of us think he isn't to blame for anything! When you are a manager Ian you are responsible for those under your charge, if things are not working you try to do something about it, if things still go wrong then those above you start to ask questions about your role. The fans have a right to ask these questions.

Knowbody thinks Moyes isn't to blame for anything, of course he is, but the players also have to take some blame and the board. Ian, you say "we just need to add more to the squad and have greater depth and quality to maintain the standards set at the start of the season."

The two big question marks I have over DM are his use of fringe players (too cautious, sticking with his 'old faithfuls' even when they are running out of steam?) and his close relationship with BK (too close, putting up with failure to conduct critical business rather than really forcing change?).

If the answers to the questions posed in the brackets is affirmative, then there is no real hope that the situation you think is nearly in our grasp will come to fruition unless there is a change in one of the executive positions, and it would amount to some level of failure by DM.

Yes we have disappointed lately (none of us are enjoying it) but where did everybody honestly expect us to be at this stage of the season?

I thought we would probably finish 6th or 7th at the start of the season and maybe have a bit of a cup run. Now, after that great start I must admit to hoping we could get top 5 and above but it doesn't look like it's going to happen but we are hardly underachieving in my eyes. If we can beat Oldham and Wigan, it will be another semi-final and the decent cup run will have been matched (obviously if we lose to either of those two though it becomes a failure).

I guess it all comes down to expectations. If you expected top 4, you will be disappointed, if you expected 10th you will be happy. For me, the fact we are (as a whole) unhappy with the club's position just goes to show how far our expectations have come since Moyes's arrival 11 years ago. Nobody mentioned European qualification and/or cup runs then!

Tony (391) I gave it you in #352 anyway it was 29% which with his draws would give a points total of around 44 pts per 38 game season and Moyes would be around 56 points per 38 game season.

Si I don’t think Moyes trusts or rates most of his fringe players to step in and have a positive impact, I think if he had the opportunity to add in January, say Fer and one or 2 other quality player good enough to start in a position we are lacking perhaps a quality forward to step in for the misfiring Jelavic, and a winger to step in for the injured Mirallas I think he would then send the likes of Duffy, Vellios and/or Barkley back out on load and I think he would use his new signings a lot more than he is using his substitutions at the moment.

Ian in your blinkered Moyes can do no wrong word I'll try simple words for you.

Moyes is stale as a dead animal
In the last days of Smith so was he

Moyes is clueless how to change a game other than defend at all costs, repeating that dirge even when it doesn't work more often than not
In the last days of Smith all he did was pack the field with defenders

Kenshite claims Moyes is a close friend he is in constant touch with
Kenshite made the same claim about Smith but when it came to the crunch over saving his own arse over Smith BK barely missed a beat in bladdering him (he did the same with Gregg - get the M.O. yet??????)

Eventually Ian, the mood swing of even Kenshite's and Moyes' sheeple like your self will sway enough to want a change and BK will send anyone but himself to the sword to live another day.

Get it yet?

Gavin, ive heard it all before for years that Moyes has gone stale, Moyes is miserable we need a change etc etc. I agree it went stale under Smith we were going nowhere only backwards facing relegation with an aging squad and no assets, under Moyes it is the exact opposite,

Moyes has kept us up there competing against the top teams, last year finishing above Liverpool and one place below Chelsea the European champions, this year we have been challenging for the top 4. We havnt gone backwards, at worst we have stood still, but I would say we are a better side than last year and we will improve again if Moyes stays.

I have never said Moyes can do no wrong so why accuse me of saying so? But I don’t agree with many of your criticisms of him, you say he is clueless how to change a game but how can he change a game when he has so few quality options on the bench? Moyes has many faults but that is not one of them.

I Still don’t get it Gavin, maybe you will get it your self one day and realise that we are very lucky to have a manager like Moyes in charge of Everton, we could certainly do a lot worse.

The fact that he can come out with those arrogant statements to the press about his future has fucking well annoyed me, who the fuck does he think he is? either sign a new contract or fuck off, it's an easy decision to make, and wherever you end up Mr Moyes, you will not be given another eleven years to win fuck all.

Do you remember during the dark days of DK ?
KEIOC and anyone who opposed or even questioned the Boards decision to relocate was called a " Luddite "
I was appalled at the time as I was totally opposed to DK and certainly not a " Luddite "
I suspect some of those supporters who think that life as we know it will end with Moyes leaving will also be called something similar.
When Roy Vernon left I thought it was the end of the world, similarly when Alex Young went.
Believe me guys life goes on.
Moyes is just another chapter in the life of Everton Football Club. When he goes someone else will come in and we carry on.
The root cause of any problems we have and had had is not Moyes and the team In my opinion it is 100% the Board and the football incompetents on it.

"Moyes will have success and win some trophies, I have no doubt about that, but it will most likley be in Germany unless he is given a top 4 job here."

Yes, Ian, and I'd play for the Wallabies if the ARU would just name me in the team.

I notice Steve McLaren has left FC Twente in Holland.

Now there's an out for Davie if he wants it. Go Dutch, get into European competition which it appears Twente could do easier than us. Make a decent fist of it then a season or two later, nip across the border into Germany.
