Quite frankly I was dreading this game pre-kick off, so convinced was I that we were to going to fall victim to a giant-killing…and speaking of giants, I was absolutely certain we were crashing out when I saw Fellaini wasn’t involved in the game neither in the starting line-up on amongst the substitutes. Phil Neville replaced him in midfield and Mirallas came in for Naismith on the right hand side. Jose Baxter featured for Oldham Athletic and was afforded a generous applause from the home faithful. Despite scoring three goals against Liverpool and Everton in the FA Cup already this season, Matt Smith started on the bench for Oldham, Chris Iwelumo preferred in attack.

The game had that ‘cup game’ buzz about it as we approached kick off, Oldham Athletic bringing pretty much their whole town with them by the looks of things, practically filling their entire 6,000 allocation on what must have been a big night for the supporters. It helped their team begin the game at a good tempo as they looked to match Everton for energy from the start, though Everton soon got a grip of things and forced the game onto Oldham Athletic, the breakthrough arriving when Mirallas made the most of Oldham’s generous marking to prod home Gibson’s cross and put Everton 1-0 ahead.

The goal was much needed and Everton seemed to have a bit more of a spring in their step after this, though it wasn’t without a little bit of luck when Jose Baxter, on his return to Goodison Park, looked to have scored but saw his effort come back off the inside of the post and away. A let off for Everton and it would have just been typical to have been punished for another defensive mistake, this one from Jagielka. We then survived a handball appeal when the ball seemed to strike Gibson inside the penalty area though Michael Oliver waved it away.

Everton continued to probe, Before slotting home his penalty, Baines came close with a swirling drive which Bouzanis did well to tip round the post, though Baines soon had another opportunity from the penalty spot when Brown handled in the penalty box. Bouzanis will probably have felt he might have saved it having guessed the right way but he couldn’t keep it out and Everton went into half time with a comfortable two goal cushion.

Into the second half and it took Everton until the 66th minute to make this game what was seemingly ‘safe’, Osman nodding home his second in two games with Bouzanis wrong-footed by Jelavic running across the path of the ball and beating the unfortunate keeper. Osman’s 50th Everton goal.

You hoped Everton would now go on and score one or two more and really add some gloss to the scoreline but this wasn’t to be as Oldham nabbed one back almost straight away with no surprises who scored it or indeed how it was scored, Matt Smith rising highest in the box to head in a corner and give Oldham a lifeline. Just the arrival onto the field of Smith certainly unsettled the Everton players and unnerved the crowd and you had to wonder why Oldham didn’t start the game a bit more like this.

Regardless, Everton got a grip of the game again. Distin did a sterling job of nullifying Smith and Everton saw the game out comfortably enough, making a few substitutions at just about the right times and should have scored at least one more when Gibson fired way over with a presentable opportunity.

Overall it’s great to progress, particularly when I was fearing elimination and I feel a home game against Wigan on a Saturday afternoon with a vibrant crowd could be enough to spur Everton on to Wembley once again. Hopefully the win will be enough to see us kick on a bit now. If we can beat Reading on Saturday, we’ll gain ground on somebody, whether that be Tottenham, Arsenal or both as they play each other in the North London derby this weekend. Fourth place is probably out of reach but we might as well give it a good go now.

We could just end the week looking up, something which seemed unthinkable after the Norwich City game at the weekend… but my word, we really have to work on defending them set-pieces. Cheap goals has been our undoing all season… and you can’t go all the way in the FA Cup with that trait.

Howard: Not overly busy but did what he had to quite well. Claimed his fair share of crosses. 6
Baines: My man of the match. Scored one and was solid and consistent throughout. 8
Distin: Could easily have gotten man of the match also purely for his impressive handling of Matt Smith..the goal aside of course. 7
Jagielka: Did fine. Missed a great chance in the second half. 6
Coleman: Not great either defensively or in attack but stuck at it. 6
Neville: Had a very good game. I suppose these games suit Neville a bit better at the moment as he can live with the tempo a bit better than he can perhaps in the Premier League. 7
Gibson: A bit in and out of the game. Didn’t show that consistency throughout. Hopefully he can step it up a bit more on Saturday. 6
Pienaar: Lively first half though seemed to be playing within himself a bit in the second period. Also needs to improve for Saturday. 6
Mirallas: Started very well though a bit quieter in the second half. Still not quite there yet but showed flashes of brilliance, particularly in the fist half. Goal will do him good. 7
Osman: Got on the scoresheet and showed a few nice touches and bits of skill though gave the ball away a few times also. 6
Jelavic: Still toiling though without a goal. Confidence just isn’t there though he’s not shirking any responsibilities. Just needs that goal to come…hopefully this weekend. 6

Substitutes:

Naismith (for Mirallas): Not on long, difficult to judge.
Hitzlesperger (for Pienaar): Not on long, difficult to judge.

Always enjoy your reports Paul but really struggle to see how Coleman got a 6. He put in some great crosses and I didn't see anyone get past him all night. For me he was the motm, or very close.

I just looked at the quarter final pairings. I'm hoping that with a little bit of luck we will get past Wigan and get the winners of the Milwall Blackburn game. While it may be pushing it to hope for this, I think that it would be a huge psychological lift to have that game waiting for us instead of Chelsea, Utd or City. I'm crossing fingers, eyes and toes already.

Considering who we still have to play in the league between now and the end of the season, I would agree with you Paul that the next two games are huge. The confidence it would give the squad would be great, especially when we have players coming back to full match fitness.

We have to be looking at getting past Wigan and couldn't really have asked for a much better tie. No doubt we will make hard work of it but it's a lot easier than some of the ties we could have got!
Then it's Wembley and anything can happen.
I thought Mirallas was great, Distin very good in the last 20 mins, although sloppy for the Oldham goal (what is it with us and sloppy goals this season?)
Coleman decent down the right and Jelavic who, although wasn't on the scoresheet, was very unselfish and brought others into play a lot.
I just hope that goal comes soon for him, he looks a bit desperate.

We had to scrap for the win and we did. Games of late, Osman and Pienaar look shattered after 30 mins and maybe a spell on the bench or complete rest may help and squad rotation a bit may give some spring back to the form of earlier in the season. Not getting on the players backs mind, they just look shattered to me and a yard slower. The likes of Oviedo, Hitz' could stand in and do OK surely. Look forward to the Wigan game Reading before that. COYB.

Wigan will definitely be no walk over. They beat Reading 3-0 away last week and looked pretty slick and fluid to me.

Paul, no way Osman scored the same as Coleman. I am at my wits end watching Osman, as for Moyes selecting him.

We are now only one game from Wembley but, unless we draw Blackburn or Milwall, if we go through I fear more heartache for Evertonians.

Coleman a 6? No way. He did great and his cross for the penalty was superb. Baines, for the first time in weeks, put a surging run but as soon as he was closed down looked exhausted. I think the lad is totally on empty.

For me, Pienaar had a much better game than Ossie; he showed a lot more pace and penetration. Yes, he gave the ball away a few times, but usually when we was trying to take the oppo on, so no crime in my book.

Thought Distin would be M-o-M until his rick, so would give it Mirallas.

Thanks Paul, Pleasant reading. I watched it from my armchair and felt that in terms of game changing quality, Gibson and Mirallas proved the difference. Wigan stufffed Reading 0-3 away last week and Kone and Di Santo looked an impressive predatory force, so I am not too confident that we will get past Wigan unless Jelly finds his shooting boots and the leaky defense gets the gaps plugged pronto. Our match Sat versus Reading will be an interesting barometer. I feel revenge may be metered out for them mugging us of all 3 points earlier this season. Think we need to do it to get the MoJo back in full flow. COYB.

Coleman/Mirallas combo was the big plus from this game. Coleman has been first class since he returned from injury and not quite sure how he scores a 6. Very close to MOTM for me second week running. Neville was utter shite and got in the way of Coleman and Mirallas countless times and gets a 7!? For what holding up every counter attack he possibly could?

Jelavic is a concern. Never looked like scoring even against lower league opposition.

Coleman 6 — no way! He had his best game for ages. I thought he was our MotM. I thought Osman, even though he scored was woeful, how many times did he give the ball away? He pisses me off. He does a few good things and then he is always on his arse or giving the ball away.

Osman had a really poor game. Great footwork at times but passing was atrocious & gave the ball away far too often

Hi Paul, you do have a tendency in your player ratings to bunch the lads in the 5-7 belt. Come on, be more axe-yielding or upbeat generous and dish out 9 or 10s or 1 or 2s when due.

Coleman was MOM for me at any rate. So:

Howard 5: those fecking short goal kicks - flapping in the air
Baines 6: even last night was a pale shadow of December
Distin: 7: unlike some, I want him to be an automatic choice next season
Jagielka 5: hoofs, bad positioning at times, awful miss
Coleman 9: our #2 for years to come
Neville 4: sideways samways, some great clapping and gesturing though
Gibson 6: joy of a ball for 1st goal, not his best 90 mins though
Pienaar 4: starting to really worry now
Mirallas 8: love him, sprightly, imaginative, hard worker, class finish
Osman 3: aggghhhhhhh
Jelavic 6: I still believe
Naismith 2: I'm running out of words
Hitz: not long enough to judge; another bizarre late Moyessiah sub

I would have dragged Osman off and put Pienaar in the middle at least he has an eye for a pass. Give Bryan a run down the wing and put on a more old-fashioned centre-forward in Vellios in the middle. Need a few changes; it just might freshen up the side with a couple of fringe players getting a run.

Good report, that, except that I think Mirallas did more than "prod" home Gibson's cross. It was a beautufully controlled finish (to a superb cross), showing anticipation, spatial awareness, timing and technique.
