The signs are that there is a decent chance that David Moyes may leave this Summer. Some will be pleased, some will be sad; most I hope will recognise that he has given his all and done a laudable job in his time here.

Much may depend on whether we make Europe and what other offers he may have but, if Moyes does leave, Kenwright will then have a huge decision as to who fills the ginger shoes. Martinez will no doubt be a candidate, Laudrup maybe less so with his name now being linked with such lofty seats as the Bernebau.

Whoever gets the job, I suspect their first duty may be to wave good bye to Baines and Fellaini, both of whom probably deserve Champions League football and will raise the money need to stave off the banks. If we hope that their sale may raise between £40M and £50M then chances are the manager may be given as much as £20M or £25M to spend.

You may think this article is heading quickly into the realms of pie-in-the-sky Football Manager stuff — and you’d be exactly right! Here is what I think our team may/should look like if anything approaching the above scenario comes to pass.

Goalkeeper: Howard (33)? Tim has picked up his form a little recently. I’m not totally convinced and I think there are probably stronger keepers out there. A little strange the club did not go for Butland at £3M but for lack of other suggestions T-Ho can stay for now. Perhaps Mignolet from Sunderland may be an affordable improvement?

Right Back: Coleman (24) I have been a huge fan of Seamus there this season. Even when he was making mistakes at the start, I thought the added balance and threat was worth it. Hopefully he maintains his recent form and improvement.

Centre Back: Jagielka (30) Reliable and possibly our next captain. His distribution is his weakness but his all-round game surely makes up for it.

Centre Back: Bassong? (26) I think we may need to buy here. Distin is remarkable and probably could play again next season but his successor is needed. Not totally convinced by Duffy (sorry Andy Crooks!) and I think someone quick and strong is needed. Bassong has impressed me this season but of course there are others.

Left Back: Oviedo (23)I really like the look of this chap. He has great composure, touch and crucially an electric turn of pace. There are doubts over his strength and size but I think he has a tenacity in him. Get him on the weights.

Right Midfield: Mirallas (25) Class. No more needs to be said.

Centre Mid: Gibson (25) Solid in the centre. He offers calmness, quick and accurate distribution and good positioning. Doubts over his injury proneness but fingers crossed.

Centre Mid: Leroy Fer? (23)? I was sad when this deal fell through as he looked the business. Perhaps it can be resurrected but if not then an equivalent box-to-box midfielder with pace and power and a goal or two in him. Etienne Capoue could be another. Perhaps Martinez might bring in James McCarthy...

Left Midfield. Pienaar (30) Has not been at his most consistent recently but the Reading game showed what he can do. Industry and artistry combined in a player capable of hitting the heights.

Attacking Midfield: Barkley (19) It may be that Ross isn’t going to be the player we all hoped he would. His loan moves this season have been promising but not dazzling. Let’s hope next season marks his real arrival and transition from talent to top player.

Striker: Anichebe (24) I almost fell off my own chair writing that. Perhaps we will have the money to buy a top class striker but if not then I have to say Vic has impressed me this season. He may lack polish and finesse but he has been effective with 7 goals from 21 games (of which many were sub appearances or playing on the wing). If he can stay fit and apply himself he really might become more Drogba than Akinbiyi. I would love it if he did.

That team currently has an average age of just over 25 and I think could give a very strong account of itself. Of course you would probably buy a few more squad players to join the likes of Osman, Jelavic, Heitinga (if he stays) Duffy, Naismith, Junior, McAleny and neville (?!) and I know lots of ToffeeWebbers will hope for a new coach who involves more of the up-and-coming youngsters.

Anyway, if Moyes does leave and Fellaini and Baines follow him out the door, then all will not be lost; we have some good players on the books and, with a bit of money to rebuild, there’s no reason why the next man in the door cannot continue and improve upon the foundations laid by the special ginger one.

That is assuming Kenwright does not fuck things up and hire Allerdyce or someone like his calibre.

If Moyes does leave, how about this chap as replacement? May or may not be a good coach, but he would have some great stories to tell!

Didn't the Bath City coach keep the role until he was about 90? Retired in the last couple of years (not an early bath).

Moyes has done a respectable job but it's definitely time to part ways, both the man himself and the club need revitalising.

Apart from not winning a trophy, the biggest stain on his time here is his lack of bringing through and nurturing young players. His undying trust in senior players who are simply not good enough does rankle with me a wee bit.

I think Fellaini will go, I'm less convinced Baines will but wouldn't blame him if he did.

I'd like to think that new cash coming in next season would fund new acquisitions, but with a man at the helm who makes Grimmer Wormtongue seem trustworthy, I highly doubt it.

The thing with any new manager coming in is that he will want to put his own stamp on things. Yes, one of his jobs is going to have to be to lower the average age of the squad, and yes, you would hope that he would promote from within as part of this. I would agree with you Sam that a consistent run in the team for players like Anichebe and Oveido may pleasantly surprise a lot of us.

However, there is no guarantee that any new manager will get a large transfer fund to spend, even if we do sell more that one big name player and a raft of older players. He may not get to bring in three or four quality players. Regardless of what he gets to spend, I do think that any new manager would still look to bring in his own type of player. He may still want to have a particular type of squad, with a particular playing style and attitude that are very different from what the current one has been used to.

The squad we have at the moment has been a very settled squad. It's part of the reason we complain about the age profile being so high. If there are a number of the more senior players sold in the summer, especially by a new manager who may not fully know the players he has left, this will potentially have an impact on what happens for the first half of next season. New players will need to be bedded in. They will have to get used to a new playing style at a club with a new manager and a set of players from the Moyes regime that are still adapting themselves.

Even if there are only a couple of changes within the squad, it still may take the squad time to adapt to a new manager and what he expects from them.

I would not expect that there will be an immediate increase in the quality of the football on offer, or the consistency with which we see it. I think that if we do have a new manager in place for the start of next season, it may be a case of being happy to take a step backwards in order to take two steps forward.

Hang on am I missing something here? 25 million sponds to spend and we have two - two? - new faces, Bassong and Fer.Fellaini and Baines for Bassong and Fer? Hmmmm.

That's real great fantasy management there Sam; no doubt that we will continue to improve with that team and incoming. The only way is up We're going top 4 with Sam Hoare.

I like this article, Sam, but one point concerns me. Not your opinion on Duffy, which is only a matter of opinion; the fact that you say Baines and Fellaini deserve Champions League football.

I know I am in a minority with this viewpoint but I, perhaps wrongly see it this way:

They are part of team that was near to CL football and maybe still are. So what are they doing about it? To me, they should be redoubling their efforts; looking at were we need strengthened re-affirming their loyalty and deciding that they are very well paid and will fulfill their ambitions at Everton. Naive nonsense, I accept, but are we not entitled to expect well paid players to show the same commitment as lowly paid supporters?

Nice article Sam. I think it's very reasonable to look at our situation and assess that doomsday will not occur with the departure of David Moyes. We will have money to spend from the sale of Fellaini and hopefully Heitinga, since it still seems unlikely Baines would leave. That should be enough to find 2 or 3 world class twenty-somethings in our areas of need and add to our squad depth.

I tend to agree with James Morgan's take on the matter. All we need is a manager that isn't afraid to mix it up with our young players, has a good eye for talent, and the ability to adapt to opposition tactics. No more strikers on the wing, "small squads" that last half a season, and excessive loyalty to the 4-4-1-1 formation please.

David Moyes has taken us as far as he can and we definitely need someone else with fresh ideas to take us to the next level.

Andy, I don't disagree with that at all. I'm not suggesting that Baines and Fellaini should leave, only that I suspect that they might. I actually think there's a very decent chance Baines might stay but, if we don't make Europe, I reckon the big fella will definitely be off.

If (when) Fella and Baines go, it will be for wages. Their value on the market rates waaaaay higher wages than they are or will earn at at Everton. Our owners have the money to pay those wages, but won't.

On Barkley - " It may be that Ross isn't going to be the player we all hoped he would".

He's gonna be that player. This kid's terrific. Needs to pull his head out his ass and understand being great in the EPL requires more than being the best teenager on the pitch. I say he will.

James, how much money does a man need? If either of them move for more money than the vast fortune they earn now,and I think they won't, then they would be greedy mercenaries who would no longer be fit to wear the shirt anyway.

For supporters, most of us who don't earn huge amounts, to be talking about the wages of premier players is just, well, something I find difficult to see sensibly. I don't begrudge any working class lad the chance to earn a fortune playing football, What I cannot accept is a man who earns £80k a week moving for a £120k a week and letting the supporters and his team mates down. That. is a greedy mercenary bastard.

We might keep Baines, Andy, but Fellaini for me is a definite to go. Just can't see him at Everton first game of next season.

Andy (512) - In general regarding wages, professional athletes are paid way out of proportion to the service they provide society. They aren't NEEDED. But the money's there and they have the right to maximize their income in the short life of professional athletics.

I don't want Fella and Baines to go. I'd go so far as to say they'd both prefer to stay Toffees. But they will only earn the going rate for their level of quality in their field, by moving on. Christ, Rodwell's wages jumped up to £100k a week? Insanity, but there it is. You call it greedy. OK. We've had it over here for going on 40 years, in multiple sports, so I just except it as a reality.

But don't exclude all parties guilty of greed. Why sell Fella and Baines? Because the owners can get in a ton of cash for them. That's why. If they are sold (and, again, I don't want them to be), be curious to see how much money is given to Moyes or whomever, to get in new players. That is, after Green, BK and them take their cut right off the top?

Off topic a bit, but topical - how badly have English clubs got to do in the CL in the near future to lose a Champions League place?
Ian Bennett

Brian - when we finish 4th probably. The curse of Everton strikes again.
Denis Richardson
18 Posted 05/03/2013 at 21:39:26
Brian - England are not in any near danger of losing one of their 4 CL places.

Germany may overtake England in the rankings this season but Italy are miles behind in 4th place (top 3 countries get 4 CL places, Germany took over 3rd from Italy recently and so now have 4 CL places, Italy 3 places).

On the subject of the CL, it just goes to prove that the standard in the PL has fallen in the last couple of years, ITV has just said it may be the first time since 1996 when Britain has failed to provide at least one team in the last 8 of the CL.

If Nani hadn't been shown a red card (which could easily have happened) then Man Utd probably would have won that game as they were in control and a goal up and would now be one of the favourites to win the whole thing.

United are better now than they were when they got to the final in 2011. Liverpool were a terrible league side when they won it in 2005, that tournament shows nothing about the strength of the national leagues.

Just got in and delighted to see firstly Madrid beat Man Utd and secondly pundits whinging like hell about it — TV companies have such a hard on for that club.

If the lazy gets spent as much time promoting other clubs as they do them, the league wouldn't be such a one-horse race and neutrals wouldn't be just following Man Utd's games on the box.

Reap as you sow, thick-headed loons.

Ian Bennett
22 Posted 05/03/2013 at 22:17:49
James - I'd back real, barca, bayern and juve to beat united most times. They are a good side that sweep away the EPL, but I am afraid against the real top sides some of those players are getting a bit too long in the tooth or are just not top bracket. It's a transition team that ferguson has 12-15 points clear. Pretty poor stuff from the rest of the EPL.
Andy Crooks

Ian, you are spot on. After the Man Utd game I posted that Everton were beaten by a poor United side. To a large extent I was wrong; Everton were beaten by an average side and as you suggest, relatively speaking, the rest of the Premier League are pretty poor.

What if we we got top four? We'd make some money but it is hard to envisage anything other than disappointment.

Chris Jones
24 Posted 06/03/2013 at 22:20:21
I can't see us making top four given that we have the toughest-looking fixture list of the likely contenders over the next couple of months. Our best bet is to make the FA Cup final or to finish at least 6th with the finallists both qualifying for the Champions League through league position (I think).

Interesting article. Untied are a poor side by their terms. A midfield of giggs, carrick and cleverley is not good enough for the champions league. I thought it was a pretty strange decision to leave out the likes of Valencia, Rooney, kagawa.

Anyway back to Everton! That team would be interesting. Bassong would fit in well. Vic up front would not happen though. Too unreliable. We desperately need a decent striker.
