Is anyone else confused? Does anyone else have mixed feelings about Moyes leaving?

These past few days have been pretty hectic... I’m sure the productivity of every single Evertonian has dropped. Myself, I’ve not been able to focus on anything but Moyes and Man Utd. First, the shock of Sir Alex moving on as I drove into work yesterday, I texted my brother-in-law and father-in-law (Man Utd fans) to tell them to send my best to Jose.

I get a reply around midday from my father-in-law: "No, Thomas, we are not getting Jose, but we seems to have Moyes lined up!". YESSS! Initially I’m really excited... BRILLIANT, and I’m thinking that all the negative tactics, defending a 1-goal lead far too early in a game, no more blasting the ball out of defence up to an isolated single striker is now at an end. The orchestrator of these terrible deeds is finally moving on.

No more will we watch our beloved Everton demonstrate an inability to take a game to the top teams in this country or choke on the verge or something exceptional. No more ranting about Moyes on ToffeeWeb. Never again will I read an article written by the talented Patrick Barclay, Henry Winter, Paul Hayward and Martin Samuel kissing Moyes’s arse sooo hard and offering him praise for ‘working beyond his means’… yeah yeah, come off it he broke the Everton transfer record 4 times (Beattie, Johnson, The Yak and Fellaini) he’s had cash to spend much more than Walter Smith. But that is it, it could soon be over.

I texted them both mid-afternoon confirming Moyes is in the back of my car and I’m on the M62 topping 120 mph, bound for Old Trafford. Neither of them reply, but I chuckle to myself thinking I’m a comedy genius... Later, I retweet a message from the hilariously funny @EvilKagawa “I no believe ear of Kagawa! Moyes have 0 trophy 11 year! WHY United WHY? Then I hear he expert seller of Rooney. I think we be good friends.” Couldn’t get any better. I finish work and I’m driving home in my car listening to TalkSport; Adrian Durham and Matt Holland are talking about Sir Alex leaving and giving a strong hint that Moyes was indeed Man Utd bound and they want to know what Everton fans think.

Nearly all the fans that call in think it is sad Moyes is off and what a brilliant job he has done, reminding me of what it used to be like at Goodison Park before he arrived and that "Under Moyes, we never needed a Barry Horne moment." It seems to ring true and I find myself nodding a bit… "NO Thomas, NO!" Had we not lucked with Jelavic last season, we might well have needed old Barry to lace-up his boots, because we were relegation fodder before Jelavic and Donovan woke the team up. But they did help the team and we had an amazing finish to the season. I get home to see my son is getting into his Everton pyjamas (no idea why the wife choose them and today of all days) and I think to myself, I’m going to have to tell him that Moyes is off... but decide to leave it until we know for sure.

I wake up this morning and read Joe Beardwood’s “We Get the Leader We Deserve” on ToffeeWeb in bed, but I’m no longer really happy. The thrust of the article is that the Everton board (this one and the previous) badly missed the commercial opportunities 20+ years ago and didn’t exploit all revenue generating avenues with the inception of the Premier League that, if executed properly, would have given Everton the kind of spending power Moyes craved. The article uses real data, actual figures and shows the lack of spending power at Everton. We all know about it, but laid bare in comparison against the other teams in the Premier League it really is eye-opening – not just how low down we are, but also the size of the gap to Everton between clubs we assume are of a similar size, like Villa and Tottenham.

By this point, it is starting to dawn on me that Moyes is going and the article powerfully illustrates the extent to which Moyes has performed beyond the means that the Everton board could afford. I turn on Sky Sports News and see the Kenwright footage; initially, I feel sorry for him. Kenwright looked really sad, he looked like he has had some terrible news, like he had lost a best friend, which he indeed had: Moyes has given him 6 weeks notice. I remember the article written by Joe and realise that Kenwright has done much wrong as Everton Chairman which has directly led to Moyes leaving. It was the wrongdoings of Kenwright and Co over the years that have forced Moyes to move on.

Despite all his loyalty to Everton, the club and to us, its devoted fans, Moyes has ambitions beyond finishing 6th, ambitions beyond the tin-pot management team that saw fit to muck FC Twente about over Leroy Fer before finally showing its true colours and NOT backing Moyes with new players for a real Champions League push. The penny dropped with Moyes and the board failed – again.

I get to work and my colleagues are telling me Martinez is clear favourite. GULP!! I watched Wigan on Monday night and they were shhhhh(ocking). No defence at all. Yep, some good players, but too many weren’t. Too many which were signed, trained and played by Martinez. I do not want that. I certainly don’t want us to be in relegation battles, year-in, year-out, and one season lose out. I go on Wikipedia to read up on Michael Laudrup as a manager, I know he was brilliant as a player, but I’m not sure what he has done as a manager. Truth is, not much, this season at Swansea looks like a managerial career highlight. Ok. Later on Everton FC confirm Moyes is off in 6 weeks time and he wants to go to Man Utd.

My brother texts me while he is on Holiday (he is a Wolves fan) “Moyes to Man U, fucking EPIC!” I’m not sure how to take the text, he knows I’ve been Moyes bashing on and off for years, but today I’m in limbo – I feel like a devote Christian who has just watched Monty Python’s “Life of Brian” for the first time, I’m just confused. I reply that I hope he does well there and that with the size of squad and talent at his disposal he won’t need to compromise his tactics anymore. What am I texting. This is most unlike me, am I accepting that the small squad of players forced Moyes to play Neville against Wigan in the FA Cup. SNAP OUT OF IT! Moyes should have used Oviedo, Barkley and Vellios much more this season… PHEW, I’m back.

I get a text message from my brother-in-law, “Moyes to us is the worst news ever – such a bad day”... Piss off. I’m thinking, he will not be any worse than Eric Demba-Demba, Massimo Tiabi, Bébé or Steve McLaren. Back on Twitter @usasoccerguy confirms the deal “With Coach Moyles coaching his soccer there, wonder what the franchise enhancement window will bring for the Unity? #mufc #epl #coachmoyles”. I get in my car I realise I’ve got to tell my son Moyes has gone. I turn on TalkSport and, as I’m pulling out of the office car-park, Adrian Durham is attacking an Everton fan who has the opinion that Moyes has been poor at Everton.

The fan cites Villarreal, Liverpool away, Wigan FA Cup, Chelsea FA Cup Final and League Cup semi. Durham is no longer defending Moyes, but in my mind I am… but why am I? I’m going to miss putting the boot into Moyes on Toffeeweb pointing out how I believe I know better, but I would do this safe in the knowledge that, with Moyes in charge, we would NOT lose the next match. It then dawns on me if we had Leroy Fer in the squad then Neville would NOT have played against Wigan… well we could have won, it was also by half-time. We will never know this of course, but suddenly I see the impact the Everton management team has had on our season and what restrictions this imposed on Moyes.

Much is often spoken about who is Ferguson’s best EVER signing; I never really cared everyone always says Eric Cantona. Moyes is in reality Ferguson’s final signing. He wanted Moyes at Manchester United and I do hope that, in time, he is seen as Ferguson’s best signing, partly because he was free and Cantona was not, but mainly to show Kenwright and Co what could have been had they backed Moyes… I hope the Everton Management team wish they played out the Leroy Fer deal differently and made more of an effort to sign Álvaro Negredo; had they both been signed and we pushed on to the Champions League, it could have been the start of something great for Everton, for Moyes, and for us a fans – something exciting. Instead, I’ve mixed feelings and I’m confused. I’ve mixed feelings about Moyes’s time over Everton now I see what the board did not do over the years to get him in a position to emulate Ferguson at Everton.

I’m also confused about what the club want to do long-term… Do the club’s management team want the same as me and you as fans? Clearly Moyes did: he wants to win... but couldn’t see it happening here — and now he has gone.

Don`t you love her as she`'s walkin out the door...

No confusion for me. Moyes is a con. Over the summer, the Man U dominated written press (people like Ollie Holt in the mirror) will have everyone convinced that Moyes is the best thing since sliced bread and in fact a better manager than the man he's taking over from. If you read the same crap, you might be tempted to think we're losing something special.

To stay with some of the analogies being used about ex-girlfriends, Moyes is the equivalent of that bird you and your mates thought was quite fit to start with. Your mates always give you that pat on the back to say well done for pulling that one. Whereas in fact, she was crap in bed, had lob sided breasts and awful morning breath except all day. In other words someone who promised a lot but delivered nothing.

It might be now we have to pull a fat one who's not so attractive to look at but might be something special in the sack!

Alan Clarke. How exactly is Moyes "a con"?
Marcus Choo
5 Posted 10/05/2013 at 07:59:16
But Alan, if Moyes was the bird, then who was the boyfriend? Us fans? EFC Board? You have to ask yourself then what has the other side being doing to keep their part in the relationship?

Regarding the OP, I share similar sentiments. I was adamant Moyes should be gone after the Wigan debacle, but now that it's confirmed there's a part of me that wonders.

Anyway we'll all have to just move on. On whether we'll progress post-Moyes under new management remains to be seen. The only clear good I think comes out of this is that the board will be under closer scrutiny. Truly awful that they don't seem prepared for this scenario. I suspect they'll sign someone who's out of job at present and I'm going to guess Martin O'Neill ... unfortunately, sigh...

Tom sounds very much like my day minus the son in Everton PJs. I sit slightly scared at what next, I have been here too many times, I remember the promise of bobby robson and him not coming, I remember the mad dash to get mike walker, who was doing oh so welll with Norwich. I am scared for to reasons firstly who is big bill going to get, I can't cope with what the RS did holding interview after interview before getting Brenda; but have a feeling that Bill will chase after someone who we have no chance of getting and if our lucks in they might arrive by September. Second because what money we do have will be spent getting a replacement manager. In the mean time we have sold off any decent assets to Man U, plus others for a small up front fee. At the end of the day Bill should have made it harder for him to leave. But like a man desperate to hold the girl who has clearly left but out of feeling sorry stays for a while, he thought the 11 years meant something.

I would like to see Bill move quickly and find someone who does not cost the earth but has knowledge. Jupp Heynckes would be top of my list and is free. Jose would be second, I think what they need is a manager for 3-5 years someone who can take us forward with wisdom like Jupp and then do what SFA did move to the board and help a younger more promising man do the next 30 years.

Alan Clarke 062 - this is manna from heaven for the press and a whole new ball game for Moyes.

If Moyes does badly / fails they will take great pleasure out of highlighting his failures and ultimately destroying him. If he succeeds they will cover themselves in butter, rubbing up against each other saying 'we were right, we're always right.....'

Moyes at Everton gave them consistent, reliable, tired column inches to trot out, just as his tenure had become. On the other hand Ferguson is a big player who'll they'll miss but blood is what sells newspapers and I can almost see them sniffing around Old Trafford as we speak, napkins around their necks, carving knife in hand...some will even be casting their eye over to Goodison Park to see what tasty morsels going to be dished up here. Scum.

Mr Choo, us the fans were the boyfriend.

Moyes is a con because he's not as good as he or the press or even Ziralix thinks he is. Take this season, a real opportunity to do something yet we get tonked at home to Wigan. After that we have an opportunity to push for a European place but we don't turn up at Sunderland. We're in a position to take all the points from Spurs but concede a late equaliser. We've bottled it again this season in true Moyes style.

Instead of explaining why Moyes is a con, perhaps someone could explain why he's been a success? And justify what you measure success against. Then ask yourself why your expectations of our club are so low and why you're willing to accept such mediocrity?

Its normal to feel slightly insecure with Moyes leaving so don’t be worried about passing on respect in his new role. I believe this is a good move for him and hopefully us too, he has left whilst he gets the backing of most and on Sunday we must all wish him well and let him move on. Moyes was a safe manager at EFC and on many occasions played not to lose as apposed to win which after 11 year drove us all potty! His first loyalty was to the club securing PL survival and he has achieved that throughout his tenure so a job well done, at times we would have all loved him to be a tad more adventurous and he would have had a trophy especially if he took the league cup more seriously. Its time to move on and see what’s ahead, EFC is a top job in the PL and we do have resources but only in line mid table and slightly above so the trick is to move forward which will be hard as the top is blocked and the gap is manufactured by billions of pounds in wealth. I have no favourites to take over currently but one day I would love Duncan standing there and giving the opposition manager grief, not sure if that’s a good idea but his love for the club means we would all be there with him and Stubbs as his number 2, in my mind much better than an overseas Manager who would bring in loads of foreign players and we would lose our heart.

Moyes leaving of Everton does not have me confused in fact I had no doubts since he showed utter contempt for us fans when he threw last years derby. What he did that day shook me to the core and brought to an end what lingering doubts I already had in his ability.
He was paid a kings ransom for what he did so spare me your weeping for him.
There is not a shred of doubt that had he been manager of Celtic vs Rangers he would not have done to their fans what he did to us in that derby.
For me that was was the last straw and his leaving could not come fast enough.

Had it not been for Cahill's extraordinary goal poaching Moyes weaknesses would have been exposed a lot sooner.

Alan, your blinkered view will never allow you to think he has been a good or successful manager. I don't by any stretch think he has been perfect, but he managed to get everton to a level in the premier league which was way above our level of net spend, (we are around 16th in the league). And it is all about money I am afraid.

Perhaps you could outline why you think man united chose Moyes. Bearing in mind they are listed on the stock market, are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and were making the most important decision for the club in 25 years. Just perhaps they understand the traits required in a great manager, or perhaps they don't understand this element as well as you, or others who think he has been shite. You or the man united board? I will have to go with them....a close call though.

Just as with the kings dock. .... this board has had its chance and blew it. We honestly do get the club we deserve. Our only hope is that we do fluke another miracle-worker..... or a new owner who can actually deliver. We're running out of boats to miss and there's no point in crying about it now. People have been shouting that this was going to happen and what was wrong at the club for yrs.... yet they were ignored by so many fixated with being anti-Moyes or anti-keioc or anti-BU or anti-anyone except those responsible. I hope I'm wrong. .... but we could be well and truly up shit street.

Dick if that really is your whole argument against Moyes I despair. The club has been falling apart at the seams and is a financial basket case with only Moyes holding it together. .... but we lost a derby so let's get rid? Honestly, no wonder we're fecked!

If Ferguson wasn't his pal Moyes would still be here it's clearly been a nod and a wink behind the scenes for eons.

The most disappointing thing is what utter no-marks we look and Moyes has got away scot free with one of the great deceptions regarding his contract.

Salt in the wound the gormless prick taking the team for the last 2 games milking the applause of his deluded sheeple.

Barry. That's bollocks. The whole board would have to have been bought into Moyes...man u are listed on the ny stock market.
But anyway, do you think ferguson has good judgement on what it takes to be a great manager and to continue his legacy.
Or do you think you are better informed. Barry vs sir Alex?

Alan, I think we'd be hard pressed to even "pull a fat one who's not so attractive to look at but might be something special in the sack"... No bird's going to want to go for someone skint and who keeps harping back on the good old days with all his wonderful ex's (Not Moyes of course!).

To answer your question about Moyes' success, I thought Beardwood's article painted a fair picture in the context of things. What did you think about it?

I wouldn't say our expectations are low. In fact I think they're the opposite given our financial context.

Alan, what have Everton done in the last 25 years to make you expect anything more than we have got. I would like us to be challenging for the title but at the moment that is simply unrealistic. I expect us to be above all of the teams that spend the same or less than we do on wages and transfers.
Tom Hughes

Barry. .... the only sheeple were the happy clappers. Moyes has earned his new job by delivering. How's BK done? When he joined our board we were as big as anyone. .... now we're no marks chasing managers who've never managed outside the relegation zone. Keep clapping, someone might throw a fish.

Moyes landed the gig simply due to a friendship..?!

Are you seriously suggesting that this is the professional judgement of the most successful manager in the history of the English game?

Dave Street
20 Posted 10/05/2013 at 10:12:05
Steve Pugh 136, Spot on. How anyone can expect more than that from any of our Managers is beyond me.

What we can expect is for the board to back our manager to a greater level than approximately 8th or 9th highest on wage and transfer budgets.

Stuart Gray
21 Posted 10/05/2013 at 10:09:18
I agree, I don't think Moyes would have got the job had he not been friends with Fergie. It is natural, we would all favour our friends. Professional Judgement can be skewed slightly because of this. Moyes isn't a bad choice for Utd, but I doubt he would have been their first (or tenth) choice but for Fergie.

For my part I wish him well, I think he saved us when we were truly woeful, but I also think he held us back in the last few years. We were content, but not happy.

But I am scared. There are some perennial "will eventually be sacked" managers out there, free and wanting a job. If they were that good, they would be in a job. However, I don't trust Kenwright. He who would have got Megson. I would be amazed if, when we finally get a new manager (probably in December), it isn't someone who is out of a job and hopelessly out of their depth.

We got lucky with Moyes, I don't expect that to happen again.

One final point, I'm pissed off with hearing how lucky Everton were to have Moyes and how loyal he's been to us. The fact is Moyes was lucky to have Everton and we were loyal to him.

Without Moyes there is still Everton, without Everton would there still be a Moyes?

Dave. Spot on. It amazes how deluded some of our fans are in relation to how well we have done. See above, our actual net transfer spend puts us at 17th in the premier league over the last five years.

Its not the Dire Dour Ones leaving that worries me , in fact I am glad he is gone, no what worries me are the lies, deceit and disrespect behind his move. His 'Contract EXCUSES' have just been a SHAM and those on TW who not only bought in to his LIES but in fact PROMOTED and DEFENDED them should be ashamed of themselves, BK of course is a just cretin for believing him.
Man U a huge public company does not appoint a new manager without a) a SERIES of interviews b) lengthy negotiations c) interviewing OTHER contenders. This all takes TIME in fact it can take MONTHS. To believe that all this was accomplished in LESS than 48 hours you would need to be naive and gullible beyond belief. Therefore Moyes has been LYING both to us the supporters and to Billy Liar for MONTHS and that is not honourable, ethical or respectful. To allow this LIAR to complete his season, and possibly get a rousing send off from fans who have just not thought it all through, is folly on the part of EFC and Billy Liar.

There are two types of club in the premiership at the moment, those whose turnover well exceeds 100 million p/a and those whose turnover is a lot less. Man U, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool- they all comfortably exceed 100 million. We are in the bracket that is well below this figure. We should be in the exclusive group and the fact we are not is down to the 15 years prior to Moyes. That is not a great situation to be in for a club of our history and we should not be happy about it but we shouldnt let this cloud the achievement of David Moyes at this club

The fact that he has consistently had Everton as the poorer end of that elusive club is painful to acknowledge as an achievement but it is. Most of the time we have been just behind these wealthy 6 but we have also finished 4th, 5th and 6th on various occasions so have actually finished above some of the wealthy 6. No other club has had that level of succes as consistently as Everton have had under Moyes. Villa have had a couple of good seasons finishing in the top 7, so have Newcastle. Then you get the other clubs who may have broken into the top 8 once or twice over the last dozen years. Under Moyes we have finished outside of the top 8 only twice.

This is why he has the Manchester United job, the biggest in british football, because every fan who is not an everton fan will tell you what he has done at Everton is excellent. Its not just the fact that we have finished in the top seven consistently. He has made us seem like a club that is actually competing with the wealthy 6 for places rather than a club that is just consistently finishing top of the poorer 14

As I said earlier, its a sad state of affairs that this is an achievement, but it is unfortunately. I have no doubt Moyes will be a success at Man Utd, I have no doubt he will win trophies and win matches at Anfield and Emirates etc and I wish him well.

If the new manager emulates at Everton what Moyes did I probably wont be singing from the rooftops about it , I will still alwyas bemoan our fallen status as one the giants of the game but I know he will be doing a good job and that for me is the most frustrating part of being an evertonian at the moment

You'll laugh at this one boys and girls. Prior to the Fulham game - only my 2nd trip to Goodison this season ( this cancer has a lot to answer for !) I wrote to David Moyes, wishing him and the team well.I explained about having cancer and the Chemo - I can't make the West Ham match as it's during the period when I get the worst side effects and my immune system is about as strong as Wigan Athletic's defence. Yesterday ( the day that DM was named as the next Man United manager) I received a nice leter from Everton, signed by David Moyes PA and containing a team picture and..........a signed photo of David Moyes !!!! I had to smile - unbelieveably when I went to the Fulham match I was stopped in the car park at the back of the Park Stand by 2 volunteers who offered me a " Bowel Cancer Awareness leaflet" - " I know all about that " I said " I've got it" Again another cause to smile !!! And the volunteers were doing a good job.

As regards the events of the last 2 days I feel dazed and confused ( is that a title from Led Zeppelin ?). Initially I thought that both Manchester United and David Moyes had shown a great deal of disrespect towards Everton. Having had time to reflect on this I am still very much of this opinion. Manchester United may have been under no obligation to directly contact Everton, given that David Moyes is soon to be out of contract, however one would have hoped for some courtesy and integrity from them. It would seem that Global Brands are integrity free zones these days.

The last 2 games of the season are neither here nor there for Manchester United, they already have their title. However for Everton, the last 2 matches are of greater importance, yet both Manchester United and david Moyes himself have hardly helped our preparations. United and David Moyes could have waited until the season had actually finished before making any moves. And I was actually under the impression that David Moyes was going before deciding what he was doing - could he not have waited another 10 days instead of making a mokery of his words.

In my letter, I wished David Moyes well and I still do, but I have to say that he has gone down in my estimation. Did he have any intention of signing a new Everton contract ? Personally I am starting to doubt that. I think he has used Everton as a stepping stone in his career.

I was quite sick at the patronising manner in which Hansen and Shearer talked about Everton on TV. It felt like Football's version of Downton Abbey with United the Lords of the Manor and Everton the poor tenants. Funny how they forget the facts e.g. Manchester United the biggest club in the world ? How many European Cups compared to Real Madrid ? And Nottingham Forest managed to retain the European Cup unlike Global Brand FC.

What annoyed me especially about Hansen and Shearer was how grateful they think Evertonians should be to DM. Don't get me wrong I am grateful, but H & S made him out to be St Francis of Assisi - managing Everton out of the goodness of his heart. In actual fact he was extremely well paid and yes he was very good for Everton - but there are 2 sides to the coin - Everton were very good for David Moyes.

I actually feel very sorry for Kenwright - he backed Moyes through thick and thin and I think Moyes has been very poor in the way he has treated him. I wish Moyes well, but I would love to see him go through some football reality and have a period when he's not the darling of boardroom or media. He has been very lucky - we all know that even if we had been at the wrong end of the table this season - Kenwright would have backed him. It would be good to see how he copes when things aren't going well and he doesn't have the seemingly unconditional backing of his Chairman.

Thanks Barry. The first time I have ever been called a simpleton. Can you keep the personal comments out of the discussion. We are just airing views. My view on you is that you really don't understand football, and your rants are nonsense, but I won't get personal about it.
On the other point, I think you right, Man U must have been talking to Moyes and many others over the last few months. So what? Everton should have been doing exactly the same. What if we suddenly take Martinez or laudrup even if they are in contract. That's ok is it.....? The Swansea or Wigan will do the same to another club. That is how is works.

Mat, so if you agree with me why say it's bollocks?

The "so what" business is Moyes was clearly in collusion it had fuck all to do with where we'll be in the summer but when/if Fergie went.

He treated this club shabbily thats the "so what" but the eternal problem with you Moyes kids is you cannot see beyond Moyes FC.

I believe there's an hourly train to Manchester from Lime St - have a devilish time.

Barry, in fact I have just bought a nice new shiny bright red Man U shirt. It fits quite well actually. Can't wait to go to that big stadium every other weekend. Should be great fun.
You can't see beyond your own hatred of Moyes. He has done a great job which is why Man U have chosen them. They could have had almost any other manager in the world. But they went for Moyes.
How has he treated the club shabbily? We don't know the detail but it looks as if he decided not to sign a new contract before the turn of the year as a way of outlining is frustration at the lack of cash.
Lets say Man U come along in feb. Lets say he tells BK he is off at the end of season.....(we don't know this but anyway). What's the issue? BK should then be getting off his arse to look for a replacement. Following exactly the same approach as Man U. As stated, what if we take laudrup from Swansea, who is in contract......is that ok? That is how the process works.

Mat #228 "Lets say he tells BK he is off at the end of season.....(we don't know this but anyway). "

That's the point Mat, Moyes didn't tell Kenwright he was off at the end of the season, he kept inventing different scenarios with no specifics, like I'll see what happens in the transfer window (Note: Not if I get 10 million I'll stay) and lets see where we finish in the league (Note: Not if we get in to the Champions league then I'll stay), get it now???????

40 Posted 10/05/2013 at 11:50:07
Al of this has made Kenwright appear even more gormless than I believed possible. Whilst Moyes dithered over his contract surely even Bill considered that he might go. At that time he could have sought advice and come up with a few possible candidates to replace him.

Then instaed over appearing bewildered and shocked he could have thanked Moyes wished him luck and told supporters that the matter of a replacement is well advanced.

Instead he will now have to search 24/7, but, hey ,we know he's good at that. He is made Everton look second rate.

Barry, you have been doing a wonderful impersonation of the Iraqi Information Minister this week (Moyes will NEVER get a top job).

You can get off your righteous high horse about Moyes being in collusion with the board, as it is clearly your opinion (see first sentence). Moyes has seen out his contract until the end of the season, he has not left us mid season like many others do, nor has he dipped into summer spending before leaving like many others do. He has guided us to one of our highest Premier League finishes this season, in spite of having no financial support. You are extremely naive if you think the footballing world decisions happens only in public, and not behind closed doors. How do you know Kenwright has never given Moyes permission to talk with United? You don't. Just like many other things that you clearly do not know or understand.

So in true Information Minister style, now that Moyes is gone you can tell us how a new manager is going to have us winning the league without financial support. We need a good laugh.

Mat Fearon
42 Posted 10/05/2013 at 11:50:55
Robbie, so you know that do you? In fact none of us know how it worked itself out, but I would be amazed if he had got the nod in feb that he did not tell BK, based on their close working relationship. And if so, BK will have also been tapping up potential managers.

45 Posted 10/05/2013 at 11:57:23
But if Moyes did have a good idea in Feb he would have been sworn to secrecy due to their being listed on the NYSE, so he wouldn't have been able to tell anybody. But BK must be the most naive person on the planet if he thought that Moyes wouldn't go to United at some point in time, however, nobody really thought that SAF would resign this season and BK probably thought he would get one more season out of David Moyes.

Kenwright is the wrong person to be running a decent sized football club and it's little wonder that nobody wants to buy the club and have him in the boardroom. Kenwright has to look at his own position and do the right thing and resign as Chairman, too many things have gone awry on his watch and he is the main reason that they have gone wrong.

Why the other directors of the club are happy to watch him bumble along is one the great mysteries of the 21st Century.

Good spot, but in context I was trying to say that Moyes was an unknown quantity and we we lucky that he turned out to be OK rather than we were luck to have him.

I'll chose my words more carefully next time.

I think Moyes was the right person 11 years ago, but he wasn't the right person for the last 5 years - however he did keep us safe and I felt we would be safe with him.

His improvement was achieved with a net spend of under a million? and who gives a fuck if he broke the transfer record Thomas? Do you understand the concept of relativity? Beattie wouldnt have cost what he did in the 90's...or the 80's etc etc. We have had the net spend of a relegation threatened squad..with which we have improved markedly from the Everton of the years before Moyes. And some of you are actually happy he is going?

Clearly do not understand football. I'm sure you will get some prettier football if Martinez comes in...and then the forums will bemoan our inability to defend.

Tommy Coleman
49 Posted 10/05/2013 at 12:20:09
Jim Knightley - What does 'Net spend' mean anyway Jim ? It just means he's a good 'wheeler dealer' and I can pick holes in those stats, i.e. should Moyes be given credit for getting £25m for Rooney ?

Being a good 'wheeler dealer', which Moyes was, shouldn't be the definition of a good manager because that would mean Wenger is the best manager in the world, which he's not.

I think Moyes was the 8th biggest spender (around £130m gross) in the league and had an average league position of 7th.

"And some of you are actually happy he is going?" He's gone Jim, you don't have to support him anymore.

Mat Fearon
50 Posted 10/05/2013 at 12:30:13
Tommy. Just have a look at the link I have posted above. It should help you to understand what "net spend" means.
Over the last five years we are about 16th in relation to actual spend. To compound the problem, we have to sell to buy, which is why the net figure is critical. Get it now?
Robbie Muldoon
51 Posted 10/05/2013 at 12:32:27
It's like I slammed MOyes for that time we went two consecutive league matches without a shot on target, and a few months later bought Jelavic and it all changed... See if MOyes was backed it would be different.... then months later he has drained Jelavic of any confidence and threw him in the bin. Moyes was just a little ball of ginger frustration! Kenwright is just a joke.
Tommy Coleman
52 Posted 10/05/2013 at 12:40:28
Matt - Why you acting like that ? It's just an argument. I know what it means, but does it define how good a manager is? That only covers the last 5 years anyway in which he was the 12th biggest spender (gross).

What's more important, how you got the money or what you did with it ?

Jim - to use your stats, the Moyes years we averaged 7th, before that it was 14th.

What would you rather have, 7th and no trophies, or 14th and an FA Cup ?

Mat Fearon
53 Posted 10/05/2013 at 12:53:13
Tommy. Apologies if you thought I was being rude. However, archieving an average position of 6th/7th with a net spend equivalent to 19th is an incredible achievement and demonstrates how he has enabled everton to punch above its weight continuously. So, yes, it does define how good a manager he is.
Dan Brierley
54 Posted 10/05/2013 at 13:00:12
Tommy, winning the cup gets you 5 million. Each Premier League place is worth around 800K. It is a no-brainer that it is better (for the club) to consistently finish 7th than finish 14th with a single cup win.

Unless of course, you are someone that can brag about a one off cup win when your club is being beaten season upon season by Stoke and West Ham.

Tommy Coleman
55 Posted 10/05/2013 at 13:07:28
Mat - Ok, I respect that. It would mean though, by your stats, that Wenger has been the best manager in the last 5 years. 'Net Spend' just isn't my definition of a good manager.

Dan - Personally, I'd rather have trophies in the cabinet than money in the bank.

Mat Fearon
56 Posted 10/05/2013 at 13:17:33
Tommy, it is one element of being a good manager. Football is all about money and a manager can only build a team by spending cash. Good players cost money, it is as simple as that. Ironically wenger has has money to spend but has chosen not to, which is why many arsenal fans are pissed off. Moyes has just had very little cash to play with and has overachieved based on what he has spent.

Anyway... you been on the blower to De Boer?

Jim Knightley
70 Posted 10/05/2013 at 13:27:20
Tommy...you are setting out our own argument. He has effectively doubled our league position.... with a minimal net spend. Personally I'd prefer that, over the fear of relegation with an FA Cup. A net spend is the easier way to define managerial success relative to buying and selling... it illustrates that we have been virtually self-sufficient, whilst the likes of Chelski, Lpool, United, City, Spurs and not to mention the likes of Sunderland and Stoke have outspent us many times over. It's not about money in the bank is it? it's about managing to improve us, when teams with our spending level either fight against relegation or are in the Championship.

You point to Wenger? his net spend is great during Moyes tenure, and I love him as a manager...but Arsenal started that period as title contenders, whilst we were relegation contenders. In that period Arsenal have dropped away as a real force, have not won anything in six years, and have 2 and a half times our wages. In that period we have improved vastly. Arsenal were able to nick Fabregas etc....because they were Arsenal.

I'm with you Sam. And Ross, Moyes has got the job because he has worked wonders for us, and has demonstrated consistency and stability. He has won LMA awards for a reason... he has improved us incredibly on no money...and he has rejuvenated this club.

Thomas -

I empathise with your feelings as it's been a bit of a rollercoaster week.
In fact, this year has been like that initial slow ascent at the start of the rollercoaster (will he stay? will he leave?) while the last 24 hours or so is the shock of that initial steep descent when the adrenaline kicks in.

I thought DM did well for us for 10 years but was increasingly of the opinion that he'd taken us as far as he could with current resources.

I think it was time for a change. However, when people can see change coming, they usually take some kind of action to protect themselves. In the rollercoaster situation, it's to put a safety bar in place so you don't fall out. In Everton's case, it should have been a Plan B - i.e. who is on our wanted list / interim list etc.

Bottom line - I support Everton FC, the club, not any player or manager. On that basis I'll be at the WHU match.

I would have preferred that all parties had shown mutual respect and acted cleanly at the end of the season rather than EFC getting shafted because SAF wants a send-off.

Why name Moyes now? That's where the confusion is for me.

Tommy Coleman
75 Posted 10/05/2013 at 13:40:25
Sorry Jim, I just disagree. I don't see the same importance as you for Net Spend. It's what you do with the money that counts to me, not how you got it.

Arsenal finished 5th before Wenger he took over. They were not title contenders. It still all means Wenger is the best manager in the league if Net Spend is the most important stat. While I think being able to be good at this is important, as Moyes clearly was, it's not my definition of a good manager. He doesn't have to worry about Net Spend any more, what's very important now is what he does with the money.

I think he was appointed Man Utd because they see him as the new Ferguson. I think this is where they've made a big mistake. Of course, we will find out.

Gavin Ramejkis
76 Posted 10/05/2013 at 14:02:56
Agree with you Tommy, NET spend is important but you can waste it badly, just look at the RS signings, over the odds and under the ability. European managers have shown several times how talent can be bought and developed on the cheap and moulded into sides that put those expensive variants to shame.
Mat Fearon
77 Posted 10/05/2013 at 14:05:58
Gavin. And that is exactly what Moyes has done. Bought on the cheap, (hence our spend is 19th in premier league), but achieved 6th/7th on average in the league. So he has put expensive variants to shame. So, you agree with Jim not Tom my then!
Tommy Coleman
78 Posted 10/05/2013 at 14:09:33

No confusion here – Moyes is an okay percentage-first manager and not much else. The fact is that Fergie is going upstairs and will still cast a massive shadow over Moyes and will no doubt help and guide Moyes along the way.

Moyes's appointment is a way for Fergie to step down slowly rather than leave Man Utd cold turkey. Imo no top manager would have accepted the Man Utd job with Fergie looking over their shoulder and to be fair after 26 years, Man Utd needed to withdraw Fergie in steps rather than cold turkey. Fergie probably also knew that and gets on well with Moyes so hence the recommendation. Moyes has certainly not been chosen for his cavalier and winning brand of football!

It will be interesting to see how it develops at Man Utd but one thing is for sure, Moyes will never be able to fill Fergie's shoes.

Time to be excited at Everton – let's just hope BK doesn't appoint another British manager and has the balls to go continental.

Everton FC is bigger than ANY single player or manager. Moyes will go down in EFC history as an okay manager but nothing special. Let's hope the new guy can take us a step further...

Time to move on.

Mat Fearon
82 Posted 10/05/2013 at 14:30:12
Tommy. No I don't agree with you at all. How money is spent is critical to club like ours where we have challenging cash flow. That is obvious. Good players cost money. We don't have much of it. Hence, we have to buy carefully, sell players on (which is about to happen with Baines and Fella), when they go up in value. Hence on average over the last five years our actual spend on transfers is £-2M a year.

Yet we still have finished in the top 6 or 7. This is a critical skill in a good manager, (as is motivation, tactics etc), and Moyes has done a brilliant job. And if you think he is not any good, why have Man Utd selected him when they could have chosen anyone bar Guardiola.

Tommy Coleman
83 Posted 10/05/2013 at 14:38:13
Sorry Mat, it was this response "Tommy, it is one element of being a good manager" regarding Net Spend being the definition of being a good manager. I took that as agreeing with me.

So now we go around in circles... Wenger is the best manager in the league. :)

Ross Edwards - I think the words big club, are as a result of actually winning trophies and league titles. Neither of which we have done since 95 the FA Cup and 87 League title, so because of the above criteria we are perhaps an average club, mixed with other average clubs in the premier league.

If we want to be a big club again, we need to do a lot of things, but I fear the ambition and ability of this board is not there, and has never been, except to survive in the premier league while they wait for their delusional 150 million pounds

Alex Higgins - ask the board, its them who don't want to sell, and why would anyone want to ever invest in a premier league club when they'd want to buy and run it? These days no one invests in football clubs, certainly not ones run as badly as ours is...corporate sponsorship? No revenue from Nike, kitbag own pretty much all the merchandising, its endless. so yes, go ask mr kenwright why he thinks he will get an investor, and why he thinks selling the club for 150 when its worth probably half of that or even less given the state of the finances.

Got a feeling it will not go so well for Moyes away from Everton, a bit like with most of the other players who have left us in the past.

I wanted him to stay, I have always been a big supporter of his, but he wasn't realistically going to turn them down was he? They are the biggest club in the world after all (whether we like it or not).

I originally thought he would stay with us – showed me eh? But in a way, I am quite proud that such a club saw fit to choose our manager to take over from possibly the greatest manager of all time. It shows he must have been doing something right in the eyes of the professionals!

So now, we have to forget about Moyes and concentrate on getting the right manager for us. My choices are from Pereira, Laudrup, Poyet and Lambert.

One thing is for sure – it's going to be a busy busy summer for our club this year! Part of me is excited, part scared... haha.

Mat Fearon, yes it's Ailey about transfers that makes a good manager. There are of course many other traits that make Moyes a good manager. But Man U are also goung to rapidly find out his many flaws too.

This article is really well written. Pretty much sums up to an absolute T how I felt. Initially I was excited that a change had been thrust upon us. The Wigan game was where I finally lost the faith. Yes, he bounced back when it didn't matter, as he always does – but, for billionth time, he choked when he needed to step up to the plate.

I think Moyes will do well. A great dignified character and I wish him all the best. I want a young fiery manager who isn't afraid to take on the world. As Jurgen Klopp responded to the press just before Dortmund's second leg against Madrid when asked "Will you be afraid to go forward, attack and play your usual game given what is at stake?"

"No – because in life, if you want to achieve your dreams, you need to be brave, adventurous and take some risks."

Until our fans wake up and see who is the elephant in the room destroying our club them we can expect more of this.

Some of you on here defy belief you really do, you all come on here with lengthy explanations of how Moyes is bad at this and bad at that, yet when presented with actual facts (see Jim Knightley above) you choose to ignore it, get over your egos for once and stand up like our badge states, that is sadly what Moyes has done, he has gone to the best, whilst blinded fools fail to see the bigger picture.

BK has done more damage than PJ could have even dreamt about, but hardly a peep out of happy clappers, but BK is a blue so that's alright, no it isn't!!

I wrote on here around 7 years ago telling us to stand up and remove BK asking where the then £13M "other operating costs" are going, now it is £24M and we still don't know where it is going and continue with a chairman who states he doesn't know where a 1/3 of his companies expenses are going to? Would any of you employ somebody with that kind of banality or crass incompetence?

For Christ sakes stop blaming Walter Smith, Moyes, Neville, Osman or Hibbert and focus on if we had a proper chairman none of the above would have been at Everton in the first place.
