The time has come for us to unite behind one candidate, and given the pitiful list of options that we’ve been presented with over the last week, the time is now. Bill said he’ll let us guide him to the right man, and at this moment in time it seems a growing group of us have surrendered to the idea of Roberto Martinez. I fear that if we don’t get together as a majority then BK has the door open to make an in-house appointment with the lack of a clear fans’ front-runner being cited as an excuse. Or, of course, the disaster that would be Martinez getting the job.

Having weighed up the pros and cons of the few men we would all realistically consider, I have come to the conclusion that Vitor Pereira is the man that stands above the rest —and, no, this isn’t just in the wake of the Greg O’Keeffe article in the LFC Echo (which I read online, of course). There were some interesting quotes in that article from Vitor though. Namely, that he has a strong work ethic and uses it to study tactical strategies,

Porto have had the best defensive league record for his two seasons in charge and he believes in scouting young players from countries that have a track record for producing quality players. He also speaks fluent English and stated a month or so back that working in England appeals to him.

I first took note of him when we were linked with him in a national a month ago. Since then I have been keeping tabs on Porto. I watched their game against Benfica the other night — a must win game that has all but secured them the title again. The game at 1-1 looked to have drifted away from Porto but with 20 minutes to go, the more they were trying to get the ball forward the more Benfica were regaining possession and running the clock down with time wasting antics and good football.

Then in the 79th on came Kelvin for the holding midfielder Lucho who duly popped up with the winner. When did David Moyes ever inspire victory in a must-win game for Everton? Vitor Pereira has shown that he is a winner. He would attract high quality young players from abroad and would look to push us upward from the day he arrived. I acknowledge that the Portuguese league isn’t the strongest in the world but we now need a winner. I don’t see a winner in most of the names linked to us at the moment.

As for the likely man Martinez, he took over a Wigan side that had just finished 11th in the PL, 14th the season before. Yes they’ve consistently sold players but Martinez has built the squad that’s there now himself, and he said after their relegation last night that "I never expected this to happen. We have an incredible bunch of players at the club, they don’t deserve this.” He’s not only tactically naive then.

I think its a huge risk appointing a manager that has no experience of the English Premier League. How long will it take him to understand the English game? How long will it take him to work out the different teams and how best to approach them? Does he even speak English?

I really feel we need somebody who already understands the English game and ideally has a few years experience managing in the Premiership.

I like Martinez because he does send out his teams full of enthusiasm and belief. He does get his teams playing attacking creative football. I honestly believe under Martinez the 'School of Science' tag would return to Everton.

But I also understand some fans concerns over Martinez. He has just been relegated and he seems to lack the basics of defending. Under Martinez Everton would improve the quality of their football and possibly beat the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool more often but I fear they would also be vunerable at the back and would undoubtedly lose more games and slip in the league placings.

I really don't know what the answer is and feel for Kenwright who ultimately has to make a difficult decision.

For me there is no obvious candidate to replace Moyes. Each of the names mentioned so far has good and bad points.

None of the names mentioned so far have excited me or filled me with confidence. I honestly believe its a little bit of pot luck and Kenwright is just going to have to make a decision and hope things work out.

Martinez, MacKay, Pereira, Lennon, Poyet, Neville or Big Dunc. There's just no way of knowing which (if any) of them would be a good Everton manager until they get a chance to prove it.

In 2002 if you had told me David Moyes would manage Everton for 11 years and then replace SAF as Man Utd boss I would have laughed at you.

A good shout! Our squad, though small, is high quality. Good enought to ride out a settling in period for the new man and then grow as he imbibes his winning ethos into the side. Onwards and upwards. Get it sorted soon please Mr Kenwright am the new man get get ready to push on through pre season and in good time for the season start.

If a manager from a big European club comes over to England to take a job in the PL then he will want money to spend as I doubt he would want to risk his reputation on the likes of Osman and Anichebe,,,End of thread.

Agree agree agreee. Pereira has the tactical acumen, a good attitude and most notably in his favour in my opinion, record of delivering. Martinez has just been relegated with an appalling defensive record, Porto as David says, have the best record, defensively in the league. Gets my vote. Obvious choice.

I suspect I'm not alone in saying up until mentioned on here I had no idea who he was.

Pointedly he's not Martinez which is mentioned in the piece.

The FA cup triumph is clearly a red rag to a bull among some a whole host of beliefs regarding Moyes blown out the water means concentrating on Wigan relegation is preferred.

Amid forced sales of top, top forwards - Valencia, Nzogbia, Moses and a net spend of minus £11.6 million during his time he has had the bravery to play football - AT WIGAN FFS.

Winning a trophy in such circumstances as relegation breathes down your neck is quite extraordinary.

Well chaps 3 populist names cover 50% of the votes and ALL are the polar opposite of Moyes.

One thing is sure we don't want anymore of the shite we've endured the past 11 years.

I find the does he speak English question in general about Europeans to be quite funny. The vast majority of Europeans I've worked with over the years including Finnish, Swedish, German, Polish, Dutch, French, Belgian, Spanish, Swiss and Italians to name just some have all to the last one of them been very fluent English speakers and I was working in their back yards not the other way around.

I just don't understand this sudden enthusiasm for Pereira. He inherited a team with a strong defence and strong attack, that had gone through a whole season unbeaten, and has kept them at the same level. If we'd just walked the Premiership, there might be a case for us appointing him, but as he has done absolutely nothing to show that he can turn a decent team into a really special one, he would be a complete shot in the dark. His achievement is no greater than someone like Neil Lennon, but hey he's not a ginger, he's got a fancy name, and he once had a pint with Mourinho.

For me, Martinez is head and shoulders above the rest. In terms of relegation, Klopp had taken Mainz down before Dortmund had the foresight to appoint him based on the potential shown - rather than looking for someone who'd hoarded trophies at a big club in a small league. The wonder of Wigan is that a club that should be at the same level of a St. Helens Town or Warrington Town actually managed to remain in the premiership for so long, never mind win the FA Cup by outplaying the previous year's champions. Martinez is an intelligent positive man who is going places. He'd be good for us next year, but most importantly he has the potential to get better and better. I saw that someone wrote the other day that Moyes leaving wasn't an end, it was just the end of the beginning, and - with Martinez - I really believe that would be true. The future can be Blue.

Brendan, but why?

Haven't you heard there's a rumour Moyes has decided he doesn't want to be here anymore.

if not you won't believe this - someone said he was spotted having a meeting with Fergie and Giggs to sort the Rooney situation!!!

... a manager moonlighting with another club - never happened in the history of the game.

I would prefer Diego Simeone but this gy looks like a manager off the top shelf. He could be the sort that transforms the squad into Champions not just aim for a top ten place.
The point about being new to England doesnt wash for me. Jose Mourinho didnt have experience of Premier League but he got by.

He has made some great buys -the best example being Jackson Martinez who took over from Falcao and looks a great centre forward. He scored 32 goals in 42 games this season.
Lest hope the board can be brave for once and go for class

Pereira should be the strongest candidate because judging by the comments on all these "next manager" threads, we seem to be writing off everyone based on the fact that they haven't won every single game they've ever been in charge of ever. (Poyet couldn't possibly be the right man because he just lost to Palace etc....)

Having not lost in their league this year, the Porto boss comes the closest to meeting this brief.

p.s Phil Neville has never lost a game as a manager. Just saying.

Pereira or Laudrup are both great candidates. Either of them will do. Marcelo Bielsa was mentioned on here a while ago. He wouldn't be a bad option either.

Does anyone know if the 'rumour' in The Telegraph about Laudrup's £10m compensation fee is actually true, or is it just made-up paper talk? As far as I know, it hasn't been confirmed by a reliable source.

David Stuart (OP) I find it mildly amusing that you call for Evertonians to unite. On ToffeeWeb. Despite what he said, I don't think Bill will be listening to Evertonians and what we think - purely because of the wide range of views.

The more I read/hear about Vitor Pereira, the more I think he's worth a shout. As others have pointed out, most of the other, realistic, names mentioned don't really inspire. Whoever it is though, I just hope they are lined up to start on 1 July, so we're not left in a period of limbo and uncertainty. That has to be Bill's priority.

I get that Roberto Martinez might be the next big thing, and I really can't help but like the guy. However, there are some pretty big negative factors that make me think he's more of a fallacy than the second coming. The most glaringly obvious being Wigan's relegation. Yes, I get they're a small club but they're 17th in the wage league and have never out-performed that position under Martinez (unlike DM who has consistently had Everton well above the wage position).

The second most obvious factor is the shambolic defending week-in & week-out, managers are supposed to know the opposition and stifle their strengths while exploiting their weaknesses. Watching Wigan, I get the impression they are told before every game to just go out and press and pass and believe and express and be the best you can be and express and pass and... They don't look as if they've ever even worked on defending a corner on the training pitch.

Also, reading on his Wiki page, it says the Swansea fans labelled him El Judas because he stated he'd only ever leave Swansea if he was forced out, then a better offer came along. He also criticised players who left Swansea for a better opportunity prior to his own ship jump.

I also didn't like the way he handled that tackle by McManaman last month, he defended him and never acknowledged what a bad tackle it was – he's only a kid, okay... but at least say it was wrong. I always liked the way DM handled the Fellaini vs Shawcross incident.

I really do like the guy though.

Dave, 240,

Fergie or Mourinho would have likely got Wigan relegated if he had been in charge. Its what happens when your one of the smallest fish in a pond. You cannot measure the quality of a manager on a relegation if the team he is managing is nowhere near the quality of most of the rest of the league. All told, I think he done a very good job over his spell there in what is essentially a rugby town.

I think the same can be said for fellow fans who slag Moyes for never winning a trophy. Its the equivalent of me playing at some high stakes poker event with Bill Gates and Donald Trump these days in the league - no chance unless your very, very lucky and rarely have an off day.

Great article, David. I've been researching night after night and can only conclude Vitor Pereira stands head and shoulders above the rest. He would command a similar salary to DM and we could probably give him £40M of the TV monies to get him started.

Martinez is too hot & cold for me. Seems to be able to inspire great attacking play one day and then the team rolls over for the next few games.
We need someone with a brain, a long term view, tactically astute, who can defend as well as attack, who can pick talent, develop players and is not reliant on a big budget. From what I can see, Pereira ticks all those boxes. In terms of EPL experience, there is not reason why he could not be paired up a "local" as an assistant (PN would be my choice). It's a risk I guess but a calculated one and would certainly show ambition from the club.

Martinez is class - second class.

Why arent we talking about Hiddinck, De Boer,Rijkaard etc.

Have we really sunk so low as Evertonians that we will accept worse than Moyes.

Why not put some pressure on Bill and cronies to think and act like a top club instead of going for the cheap option every time.

Martinez teams are so laid back like him. Thats why they have the WORST defensive record in the premiership. There is no get and go about his players.

People go on about the players Martinez lost well Moyes lost Arteta, Rodwell, Cahill, Yakubu etc and guess what still kept us in the top 6.

Completely agree but after following the 'where next for Roberto' thread I'm not convinced we are capable of rallying round one cause even to save our lives!
I don't believe Evertonians - or more to the point ToffeeWeb followers could agree on which way is up!
Even if we could join as one, the problem now seems to be that we have reached our voting capacity with not many new Pereira votes (or any one else's ) for that matter coming in!
We have pretty much reached a 3 way split between Laudrup (good choice but wasted vote since we won't pay the compo); Martinez (God forbid!); and Pereira (my favoured choice).
Couldn't we ask that nice Mr Kendrick to switch the Martinez votes on to Pereira on the grounds that anyone voting for a manager who has just got his team relegated cannot be of sound mind!

He said that Lennon wasn't ready and that Martinez's record of 6 PL wins a season wasn't what Everton were used to, no mention of Pereira. Look fellas and ladies, we can’t continue fiddling while Rome burns! Davis Stuart made an attempt to get us united. It’s clearly not going to happen. We shouldn’t keep following the same circuitous debate particularly about Martinez.

Maybe now we should just make a concerted effort to focus our votes on those candidates who are by far and away ahead in terms of votes cast, i.e.Laudrup; Martinez and Pereira. Doing this and making it meaningful depends on essentially on 2 things: 1. Will the good editor, Michael Kendrick, agree, as soon as, to making the poll a 2 stage poll (the first being the one currently running); and 2. If Bill Kenwright says he will listen to Evertonians how best if the vote is completed in time do we get the information to him? I suspect you’re talking about less than a week here!

Let’s face it at the last count there were 10580 votes cast in the ToffeeWeb poll. Where else is BK going to go to go to get the views of that many genuine Evertonians?

A second stage of voting will not be detrimental to those who have already voted since they will pretty much be the same people voting again. Those who voted for non-starters have the opportunity to place their votes more effectively and other may wish to re-asses based on the posts appearing in the ToffeeWeb debates and on their own research which naturally becomes more focused as the debate heats up.

So Michael, what do you think, would it be possible to arrange a fresh poll on the leading 3 candidates? I’m sure, if you are agreeable, votes would come in pretty quick particularly if it was given a very tight time scale (or as soon as it reached 10,000).

And secondly does anyone have any clever ideas how we could ensure any second vote get to BK and those around him? I’m not sure he reads Toffeweb!

Imagine a team of Scousers sweeping all before them playing a free flowing 3-3-1-3...

Just read his wiki page and cream yourself over that...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcelo_Bielsa

Amazingly the man Guardiola described a few years ago as "the best in the World" is out of contract and has never managed a club bigger than Everton. JUST ASK THE MAN!!!

However, as I realise this will never happen I will try and put him out of my mind and jump firmly aboard the Pereira bandwagon. A very decent 2nd choice by the looks of it.

Kev Johnson
63 Posted 16/05/2013 at 11:50:30
Mike - Bielsa would be my first choice, too. I was bewildered that he didn't even make the TW poll shortlist of 19!

I am also bewildered that Kendall has come out in favour of Ferguson. As a former Bilbao manager, he should be our middle man in talks with Bielsa. He could just ring them up and say "Hi, how's it going? Blah, blah, balh. By the way, can I have a chat with Marcelo?"

He doesn't speak much English, apparently. That's the only drawback.

Andrew Ellams
64 Posted 16/05/2013 at 12:00:03
My guess is that Perreira would be more open to coming to England. Bielsa is 58 and never managed outside a non Spanish speaking environment. Don't be surprised if he replaces Pellegrini at Malaga
Nick Entwistle
65 Posted 16/05/2013 at 11:54:26
Mike, he's been in charge of Bilbao for two seasons finishing 10th and with three games to go is currently 14th.

He has a 38% win ratio and spent the previous 13 years in international management with Argentina and Chile.

He's only managed Latinos, never had a sniff of northern Europeans - does he even speak English?

I do though like Jorge Jesus of Benfica... he looks like Richard Lewis from Curb Your Enthusiasm, and raves about exactly the same too.

I can’t say I now too much about him, but from what I see and read, he does standout above the others, I’d be very happy to see him given a chance.

A question of importance for me in regards Pereira would be, does he have a proven ability to extract value in the transfer market?

Mike Rourke
68 Posted 16/05/2013 at 12:00:50
Kev, I have strong idea that bewilderment will be a feeling we'll all need to get used to when the Stubbs/Neville dream team is unveiled.

The language thing shouldn't be an issue at all. That Pottechino fella seems to have fitted in very nicely at Southampton - which by the way is just another thing that would wind me up - A no-mark club like Southampton get an up and coming continental manager and we end up with Fat Malky or another 'name' from the mediocre squad.

Blood boils just at the thought.

Steven Telford
69 Posted 16/05/2013 at 12:12:20
Does anyone else feel the irony from the fact that the Martiez advocates base their admiration on him for him having (supposedly) over achieved relative to his resources…… and for the most part they are the same guys who wanted Moyes out.

Even though I am personally far from convinced that he overachieved, I’m not criticising Martinez, I’m just pointing out what I perceive to be a massive inconsistency.

Mike Rourke
70 Posted 16/05/2013 at 12:13:59
Nick, I think the whole Bilbao Basque-only thing allows a great deal of forgiveness.

I'm also lead to believe that their star player Llorente has been in the middle of a massive 'I want out' strop this season. ( Admittedly my 'sauce' is one guy who could simply be making it up )

Nick Entwistle
71 Posted 16/05/2013 at 12:19:26
Steven, if Martinez had a Moyes-effect on the club's ability to over achieve then Wigan would finish 10-12... and he's not done it once. All he's had to do season on season if finish above Hull, and Reading, and Burnley. Championship dross. As well as the odd horrendously managed clubs like at the time Newcastle and West Ham.

Mike, I thought that was abolished, but still looks more or less adhered to, if a little more relaxed than before.

Bilbao were great to watch last season though.

A second vote would be very interesting now, given that we've all had time to ponder. Especially as a lot of the Michael Laudrup votes will surely be sent elsewhere now that we know he's not a viable option.

If it were to happen, the best thing would be to post the results (recorded delivery) along with a letter along the lines of:

Dear Mr Kenwright, At ToffeeWeb, ten thousand Evertonians have been discussing and researching the potential new Everton manager and have just taken a new vote...

To the office of Mr Kenwright:
Bill Kenwright Limited
BKL House
1 Venice Walk
London W2 1RR
United Kingdom

This would surely hold some weight if Mr Kenwright really is listening.

Talking of pochettino, chat today that he might leave Southhampton if Cortese does (which seems possible at the moment). I think he's acquitted himself extremely well in admittedly a very short time. Another tempting option?
Mike Rourke

Considering the way things are going Pochettino would be fine by me.

My position is essentially: No Brit manager. Especially Hughes. The bastard.

I also like Tuchel, he managed to get Mainz promoted after they went down with Klopp as their manager. He has managed to keep them in the Bundesliga and even got them to 5th which is a very good achievement for a club of their size. He has had to deal with selling his best players to other clubs and still managed to keep them up there. He is innovative in his training and coaching methods and he speaks very good English. He plays a high tempo pressing game and uses a lot of young players. So definitely should be on the shortlist for me, along with Periera.

What amazes me is that people are still throwing names in to the hat of managers who haven't been mentioned before. Over 10,000 votes have been cast and others are chatting away about new names like it matters. Please get real and talk about managers who have a chance. Or better still talk about a second poll and maybe get our voice heard!!
Andrew Ellams
79 Posted 16/05/2013 at 13:33:29
Sid, the names on the poll mean nothing really until we know what the board are thinking. There could yet be a name completely out of leftfield surprised us all (pleasantly I hope)
Colin Glassar
80 Posted 16/05/2013 at 13:33:46
Sid, the only three viable options IMO are:

Martinez
Pereira
McKay

I think it will be either 1 or 3. Pereira might be a bit too exotic for boys pen bill.

Kev Johnson
81 Posted 16/05/2013 at 13:35:00
I think the idea of a second poll makes sense. Once this one topped 10,000 votes it had served its original purpose.

I don't for a second imagine BK reads TW, but surely someone at the club must have given him the results of our poll? A poll of 10,000 Everton supporters is not insignificant, and I don't see how else he is going to get an idea of who fans want.

Sid Logan
82 Posted 16/05/2013 at 13:38:54
Colin,, McKay currently has 2% of the vote. We're not going to make the deciding but if 10000 Evertonians have a view then better it gets heard than not. If we do manage another vote and reach 10000 in numbers before any announcement by the club is made how could BK announce a manager who wasn't in the top 3 and still say he had listened.
Andrew, the point is BK said he would listen well let's give him something to listen to!
Kev, we all need to keep plugging away!
Steavey Buckley
83 Posted 16/05/2013 at 13:41:20
Before anyone is touted to become the next manager, the question should be asked, who can improve the Everton team. The answer, very few if none who are mentioned. That is a dilemma in itself. Martinez ,who has been touted, won very few league games with Wigan. Who could repeat the same dismal record with Everton.
Sid Logan
84 Posted 16/05/2013 at 13:51:59
David#377, I meant to say well done for getting the initial handle on this. Your suggestion of letter to BK is definitely one option we should use is a second vote fhappens.

If anyone else has other ideas we should also use them. I suggest we email Echo journalists at the same time. I know some people dismiss them but Dave Prentice and Greg O''Keefe are actually Evertonians!

Kev Johnson
85 Posted 16/05/2013 at 14:11:27
There was a thread in the Messages/Miscellaneous section asking people to email BK with their feedback on the new manager

http://www.toffeeWeb.com/site/classifieds/24591.html

Wouldn't it be a good idea of the current results of the TW poll were emailed to BK and/or the club? Then we could do a second poll, perhaps removing anyone who scored less than 5%, where we could vote again on the shortlist.

Michael/Lyndon - is this feasible or not? It would mean that the club are at least aware of how some of its supporters are thinking. As I said, 10,000 is a fair number of people.

I expect a new manager to be appointed within 10 days, so if we want to be listened to then we should do it now.

Mike Rourke
87 Posted 16/05/2013 at 14:26:22
Any letter should strongly highlight, underline and red-circle the fact that exactly 0% of Evertonians want Mark Hughes.
Colin Glassar
88 Posted 16/05/2013 at 14:28:53

The bonus of a manager such as this guy is that he would have knowledge of young Portuguese potentials as well as the pool of talent in South America that often start careers in Europe at Portuguese clubs, Hulk, Falcao etc.
Gets my vote.
David Stuart
90 Posted 16/05/2013 at 14:30:23
Yes if a second round of voting is possible on those who scored 5% or more (as suggested by Kev Johnson 430). Sent to Bk via post and email together with the first round poll we have definite volume of number that can't be ignored.

Also we should email the same to anyone else connected to the club; Sharpe, Horne, Prentice, O'keefe etc. Atleast then we would all know that we've done everything we can to influence a positive decision.

Glad to see many ToffeeWebbers are seeing sense re Martinez. He took over a Wigan side that had previously finished around 11th, 13th etc. in recent years. His record? He has since avoided relegation by the skin of his teeth on 3 occasions and got them relegated on the 4th. I'm not underestimating the significance of winning a trophy, but let's not forget we're talking about a guy who has performed worse than Steve Bruce as manager of Wigan in the league. We're talking about a man who wins (as somebody said above) an average of 6 games a season! We deserve so much better than that ... I'll be horrified if Kenwright decides he's our man.
James Lauwervine

Kev Johnson
93 Posted 16/05/2013 at 14:55:05
Just for the record, if we were to do a second poll, and we cut out all those who scored less than 5% then the TW shortlist would be (in current order):
Laudrup
Martinez
Pereira
Bilic
Di Matteo
Ferguson
Benitez
Chris Butler
95 Posted 16/05/2013 at 15:10:39
I really don't understand why Martinez is so popular he took a mid table average Wigan team previously managed by Steve Bruce and turned them into relegation candidates. Yes he has won away games at the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool plus he's won the FA cup but he has proven he's unable to learn from mistakes. Fergie wasn't a defensive manager but he know how to set up a good defence, attack and midfield same with Wenger. I wouldn't go for Lennon either as he could turn out to be another Walter Smith. I think Laudrup and Steve Clarke have done very well this season I'd like 1 of them 2. Malky Mackay lacks experience in the top flight however so did Moyes when he arrived. I think to call Moyes negative is slightly unfair as our play has been very good this season, just look at the first goal on Sunday.

If it was Mark Hughes......

(Don't know why but I've got a feeling it'll be Phil Neville).

I'll pick over the bones of the 7 potentials that top the current poll:

Laudrup - Has publicly stated that he will be at Swansea next season; reportedly has a £10mill buyout cluase.

Martinez - Won FA cup with some good football; Just been relegated; has failed to outperform budget constraints for entire time in charge of Wigan; left Swansea under a cloud after publicly stating he wouldn't leave; tactically very naive; shocking defensive record.

Pereira - Won 2 league titles (with a win this weekend) in 2 seasons at Porto; wants to manage in England and speaks English; has a good knowlege of top young talent in South America, Portugal and Spain, and would be able to attract them to EFC; a man on the up; Out of contract in summer.

Bilic - Knows EFC; did well at Croatia with a good team; currently manager of lokomtiv moscow who are in 10th of 16 in Russian PL; got beat 4-1 at home on Sunday.

Di Matteo - Won CL; sacked by West Brom and Chelsea; doesn't seem to fit somehow.

Big Dunc - Loves the club; no experience; would surely be a huge gamble rather than a calculated risk.

Rafa - Is a winner; out of contract; was very disrespectful to us when in charge of the RS; would he come here and would we accept him?

I'm going to repeat myself, as I've said this, more or less, on other threads on the question of the succession of David Moyes.

I don't want to speak from a high-horse (though I like to watch them at Aintree), but I have been living in Porto for some time now, and I have watched Porto on a regular basis.

Essentially the quality of their football has gone down since Andre Villas-Boas left and was replaced by his number two, this man Victor Pereira. True, he won the League last season and is on the brink of doing so again on Sunday. But don't let that fool you: the Portuguese League is increasingly a two-club affair, and Benfica have played much better than Porto this season, but have got distracted by their long European campaign. Also, Porto have had a very strong organisation for quite a few years, which helps them to keep winning. There is even a saying in Portuguese football to the effect that "any dude can win the title with Porto".

I know that after José Mourinho and, to a lesser extent, Villas-Boas the hiring of a Porto manager sounds too tempting to refuse, but, believe you me, Pereira is not in any way in the same class. I don't mean he is a bad coach - far from it - I just don't think he has the personality or leadership qualities required. He looks and sounds too drab, even diffident. Furthermore, he has no real expericence of the transfer market, as the Porto Board and Director of Football work it for him.

Another point on Pereira: the Porto Chairman has been around for more than 30 years and knows his football. The fact that he hasn't offered Pereira a new contract - the current one expires at he end of the season - speaks volumes.

`Having taken soundings from our loyal fans,it is clear that the consensus is to disagree on the man I should appoint.
Accordingly,I have decided to go for someone who lives locally, knows all about our great club, has just won a European throphy and whose appointment is guaranteed to unite the fan base.

Eyes wide shut!! Martinez's team cost £11 million. That's not even one Fellaini!! 8 players out injured for large parts of seasons. Picks up players like McCarthy for £500k. McManaman (who Moyes let go, btw). Plays fast attacking football battering us away from home and Man City in the final. Has to play Scharner (a midfielder) in center back due to injury.

He has actually won something that David Moyes couldn't do in triple the time with triple the transfer funds and triple the wage bill. Yeah, that Martinez is really rubbish isn't he... that's why Liverpool wanted him... as did Villa. And also Whealen, the chairman, says he would keep Martinez for life. People who study the game can see past being relegated.

David Stuart # 505.

Porto have consistently sold their best players year after year for many years now. Before Falcao and Hulk you had the sales of the likes of Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Lisandro Lopez and Lucho Gonzalez (who has since returned to the club). And Hulk was still there last season. But, while selling, Porto have also kept up their signing of fine footballing talent, and in recent seasons have added people like Joao Moutinho, Jackson Martinez and James Rodriguez to their squad, So that is not, in my view, really an explanation for their, mostly, lack-lustre performances over the past couple of seasons.

Last season they even failed to qualify from the group stages of the Champions League, something which they usually do, and this season were knocked out by Malaga in the last sixteen. Not very impressive, I'd say.

David Israel

You have been nothing if not consistent and persistent about Pereira. What I would say is Porto turn over manager faster than Chelsea! In that contex he's lasted longer than most in recent years.
I'm not sure how important charisma is in making a team succesful. As long as he communicates with the players effectively I wouldn't be too concerned.
I've watched some press conferences and ok he was speaking Portuguese but I can think of plenty of premiership managers with less charisma.
I suppose we're not going to find a manager who is massively outstanding and who is not wanted by someone else.
Thanks to the ToffeeWeb pole we are at least in a position to know that some of the awful choices which would have sent us in to dispair (e.g. Mark Hughes) haven't registered on the scale thank God!
At the end of the day if we do get a second vote and somehow get it to BK we will have had our say! What more can a poor fan do except roll with it!
David Israel
113 Posted 16/05/2013 at 17:18:42
Well, Sid, it is true that on the Continent the managerial turnover makes Chelsa look like the example of stability, but Porto do not change managers all that much. Villas-Boas may have been there just one season, but it was him who wanted to leave for Chelsea. And his predecessor was in charge for a full four seasons.

I'm sure that if the Porto chairman still had any belief in Pereira, he would have offered him a new contract a long time ago.

But you're right! What can a poor fan do?

The more I read the more I think Pereira is the man we need.
On the poll I originally voted Laudrup, but he is clear in not wanting it.
Martinez would maybe work out
But of this current list, I feel EFC should seriously be trying to ascertain if Pereira would be interested in the role.
If he says he wants to manage in England, I would guess he is keeping tabs on the Chelsea, Man City situation.
If EFC make an approach, it needs to be carefully timed, but I say go for it.
Liam Young
116 Posted 17/05/2013 at 14:17:19
David, you are spot on for me mate!! I started off thinking Slaven Bilic could be the man, but only a year into his contract in Russia, that would be a costly acquisition.

I have been reading many articles in Vitor Pereira, he has an impressive CV, a great work ethic, and even better, he is out of contract in the summer, this is a great opportunity to get a great tactically astute European manager, and developing youth players is extremely important for EFC.

I think he fits the Everton mould just right, and he has my vote, Martinez is the most baffling one for me: the man has consistently fought relegation, and now Wigan are relegated — when have you ever heard of a manager in charge of a relegated side coming back to the Premier League with a Top 6 consistent side like Everton??? CRAZY!!!!!. If we get Martinez, I will seriously be livid.

Come on BK, lets go get Pereira, hopefully you already are!!!.
