Like everyone else, I have spent the last week trying to decide if I was “glad” to see the back of Moyes or, and less likely, I was gutted he was gone. The reality is, of course, neither; it is a fear of the unknown that is stressing me.

Even if I wasn’t Moyes’s greatest fan, I have to admit there was a stability in Everton. We wouldn’t win owt, but then we would never drop too far either.

For my sins, I spent some time on the Shareholders Association Executive Committee and was “lucky” enough to gain some insight into the internal workings of the Club. From a personal viewpoint, I worry more about the advisers to the Owner than I do about the guy making the decisions (although, let’s be honest: he worries me.... they all worry me).

The problem at Everton is usually the reasoning behind decisions (or lack of) rather than the decisions themselves. The choice of new manager has to appear to be the right choice as much as being the right choice.

There are those who will want a proven king, a winner of trophies... But kings nearly always want a king’s ransom too, so we can safely rule out any of the suspects in this bracket. These guys can be the biggest gamble as they would soon have us in massive debt but may not bring us silverware. I am sure there will be some within the Club who will push Kenwright for this gamble, maybe a Rafa for example? “Show the fans we know what we are doing, Bill!!”.......err!

At the other end are the lepers, the guys that MotD pundits love to promote as being great managers: Martinez, O’Neill, Lennon etc... sorry, I almost wet myself on the last one there!! But these guys are to most fans untouchables – people we really don’t want near the place, and Martinez is top of that list. I fear this group of managers the most as the advisers within the Club would see them as a “safe” bet, a popular choice with the media, if not a large percentage of the fans.

In the middle, there are the managers who may be a more exciting/interesting bet, the swashbuckling knights with a more effortless or nonchalant attitude to the beautiful game. In here we have, for example, Steve Clarke – not one of MotD’s favoured sons. No silverware but he never had a king’s war chest either (so should fit in well with us).

His WBA team always plays with an attacking flair, something I’ve long forgotten at Everton and greatly miss. I have long thought Evertonians would forgive a result if only the team showed a willingness to play football with a scientific approach to the game. An attempt to give the fans nothing but the best?

I think a Steve Clarke may fit the bill...???

So who do we want? A king like a Rafa? A leper like Martinez?? Or a daring attacking knight like Clarke???

I fear the court jesters will be whispering “Martinez” to the owner regardless of what the majority of fans want.

It will be interesting to see how WBA fair this season with no Lukaku playing for them, for me he was the main reason behind their sucessful season and not Steve Clarke. They finished 11 points off relegation, without his goal contribution I think they will be down with the relegation battlers.....

Sounds like you want Clarke. No thanks. Either internal appointment for me (safe bet) or foreign appointment including Martinez (preference and risky as will change status quo).

Why Martinez? – clear philosophies of how to play, age 39 so still learning and lots of time to improve; confident, respectful, optimistic; rotates players, plays youth, ability on no budget; how he got Swansea playing; tactical and ability to win. He's no bottler and has won plenty of big games even with a weak team. I don't see any negatives with this guy EXCEPT when he defended McManaman although some may even see that as a plus.

I would love to have him here and believe he will change the whole club's style of play, from youth to first team.

Not sure I see Clarke as a daring, attacking, knight! More a sensible, pragmatic squire. Who happened to have a pretty useful sword called Lukaku (who apparently has said we would be his preferred destination if he were to go out on loan again).

Did you watch West Brom at Goodison? Spent the first hal hanging on for their lives against our supposedly defensive non attacking side. Same as when Swansea came to Goodison as well, they both looked shambolic and were happy to try and hang on for whatever they oculd in the knowledge that they were up against a far better side than they were. Clarke has been lucky that he's had Lukaku at times, but despite this his winr atio since the turn of the year is awful. I don't mind genuine suggestions for a new manager who people believe would change things, but making out that Clarke is a more attacking manager than Moyes is ridiculous. If anything he plays exactly the same defensive formation and his whole team goes to pot if one of Mulumbu or Yacob (that's a nice attacking adventurous midfield isn't it?) isn't playing. He's just a poorer Moyes.

Once the Special One lands at Chavski he'll tur Lukaku into his new Drogba so forget about him. As said by previous posters and to a certain degree seen in our games plenty of ammunition put forward for WBA and us but without Lukaku for them and with our struggling forward line a whole different end result.

Personally I'd like to see Pereira, voted for hi in the poll, watched his Porto side, seen him interviewed a few times and his brand of football will do me. It also ticks a box I posted on another thread about describing 11 cardinal rules to fail a business - taking risks. We've had 11 years of comfortable slippers and bred complacency that its the best we can hope for, well bugger that lets have winners in with winners mentality not this dour subservience of knowing our place and put a swagger and belief back into the club and our football.

I always see Clarke as dour and downright miserable, his team ordinary without Lukaku.
What about that nice Mr Zola who interviews for the job this afternoon at Wembley. He`s just began `his presentation` by reminding SSN that he`s already had Premier experience.
He`s foreign and he`d come cheaper than `Wigan`s Wonder`!

Phil hasn't he done even less than 'Wigan's Wonder' though? He took West Ham down (who was his wonderful assistant then?) the same as Amrtinez has taken WIgan down. Every manager has dark patches on their CV.

You said that "kings nearly always want a king's ransom". Surely, the best fit for Everton would be a king that doesn't need a king's ransom. There have been plenty of names floated about on ToffeeWeb that tick this box. For some reason, you've completely ignored them all, and concluded that Steve Clarke is the best choice. I think Clarke is an okay suggestion, but he wouldn't be top of my list ....not even close!

Whether you agree with Clarke is a matter of opinion, but to say he only did well because of Lukaku is the biggest load of tripe I have ever heard.

Who brought him in? Who put him in the team? Who got his players to supply him with the chances to score?

Surely saying he did well because of Lukaku should be a compliment rather than as ammo to say he isn't good enough. Especially when you consider that our last manager couldn't find us a decent striker for 11 years!!!!

For me, the only choice is a 'man for all seasons': Michael Laudrup.

Proven international experience - and no small measure of success - as a player and manager.

He conducts himself with dignity, has proven acumen in the transfer market, is clearly capable of winning things (without being relegated) and embodies everything in a manager we Evertonians aspire to.

No other candidate would enthuse me and he is clearly the favourite amongst us.

How exciting if we were to get him. Anyone else would just be, and very likely end, in anti-climax,

Pereira, Bielsa, Rijkaard and Montainier will all be free on 30th June. Why pass up the opportunity to pay NOTHING for those 4 rather than paying £5 million for Martinez.
It's pure common sense, something BK somehow lacks sadly.

David Booth, thank you for using the phrase "conducts himself with dignity". For me that's a key trait that I expect in an Everton manager.

Any new manager is such a gamble anyway, why would you stake £5m or even £1m more on that gamble than you need to?
Wayne Smyth
16 Posted 27/05/2013 at 13:10:56
Dennis, the manager is the most important person at the club.

If Laudrup is a much better manager than Martinez, and the difference is £5M in cost, then its a no-brainer to go for the best you can. We'd gain the £5M back very quickly with a few astute transfers.

Hey Ross, it's all very well listing that candidates are available, but they actually have to want to come as well.

Not saying Everton isn't an attractive job, but there's comparatively big shoes to fill, key players going and not too much money to play with.

Cheers Ernie. I think it's a pre-requisite.

We don't want some gum-chewing, referee-bashing, touchline yob.

Wed are Everton after all: one of a dwindling band of clubs who still aspire to do things properly and care about their image.

Ross Edwards

No but they are free Chris. That is the point. I know they won't come but I would rather save compo and get one of the 4 I mentioned in my post, than pay £5 million to that Whelan for Martinez.

'm sort of with you on Clarke Ian.

I mean there's no guarantees of anything with anyone, but I think many can't/don't look past his miserable gob and (fleeting) Liverpool connection

If you do, there's a fair bit to be impressed by imo.

I think he's only had one full season as a manager and he gave WBA their best league position since 1981.

I was also impressed by how they dealt with us at their place this season.

We battered them early on but if memory serves, they/he figured us out in the end.

Also, I think 'The Special One' wouldn't have kept him around if he didn't have something.

It might be that he's (Colin Harvey?) a better coach than manager but all in all, I think he's someone who knows his football onions.

He wouldn't be my first choice but he would be above most of those I've heard suggested.

"I have long thought Evertonians would forgive a result if only the team showed a willingness to play football with a scientific approach to the game. An attempt to give the fans nothing but the best?"

Sorry but have to disagree. "Nothing but the best" is quite simply winning. I don't mean winning at any cost ala Suarez diving or Gerrard waving imaginary yellows. Subscribing to a football philosophy (we play this way) is fine if you have the resources, At the moment we don't and trying to impose a "philosophy" may be disastrous.

(By the way, neither do the RS have the resources and that philosophy - I hate the word in this context - has backfired on them.)

I don't want ugly football but a winning mentality from the new manager - for me, that's mixing the styles.

I may be alone here but I get as much pleasure from a Duncan style winner against Man U or the RS (well more against them) as I do the Mirrallas goal v WHU.

I think the fact that they are all free from the 30th of June is the reason we have yet to appoint a new manager.

I have heard Montanier is off to Rennes, and I also read somwhere that Porto have offered Periera a new contract. I really don't get the big support for Laudrup either, finished mid table and won the League Cup, similar to a Mr. McCleish a couple of years ago. He doesnt have a reputation for hanging around either. And as for Periera, since he is out of contract next month, why are none of the otherb tops clubs in Europe sounding him out? As far as I can remember, a lot of bg European clubs where chasing Mourinho and AVB, but there doesnt seem to be a big rush to grab VP, except Everton ( su[pposedly). If he really is very good, where is the interest? Just not totally convinced by him.

I agree with Ian and do not trust Bill Kenwright who time after time comes across with most of his statements as a person who is out of his depth, who seems to think that only his advice is the correct one on club matters.

The present management group at Everton, who BK appears to be the only one we hear from, does not seem to care what the supporters have to say (the fiasco over the new crest is a perfect example) and, as BK relies largely on media coverage for his entertainment ventures, he will listen to the media for the name of the new manager, regardless of supporters views.

As Mr Martinez, he is flavour of the month with the media; unless he stays at Wigan, expect him as the next manager. (Not my choice.)

Please not Red-Shite Clarke. Apart from the RS connection, Clarke is a miserable twat. I can't stand anyone who is involved in the EPL who earns £50k plus a week and can't raise a smile. Moyes, Gerrard, Drogba, the Gormless lump at Spurs Adebayor .. .I cant stick any of the moaning ungratefull arseholes. We need someone who can drag us along on a wave of excitement and euphoria — not some twat who looks like a coffin maker.

NO to any more miserable fuckers.

What about DiMatteo? Successful player, promotion with WBA and won the CL and FA cup with Chelsea as a manager, pretty good cv and would cost nothing. His teams play good football and he would stick around if successful. Ticks all the boxes for me. Well respected in the game, surprised he has hardly had a mention. Martinez is a big no. Cannot understand the clamour for him especially with a compensation package, he has just took his club down!

FSW is out of the running now he's been sworn in as Napolis manager.

And wasn't it between Napoli and Everton that Pereira had a choice?

Could be a good omen?

But Bill will pick Round.

I can't believe what I'm reading... Kings, Knights and Lepers. Is this a Pratchett novel that didn't make the shops? Martinez somehow less graded in your opinion than Steve Clarke. And what makes you the voice of recognition in our choice of manager. Writing off proven managers and promoting Steve Clarke with one year under his belt is a strange way of thinking; your judgement suits more of a 'if the face fits' style.

What concerns me at the moment is, whoever comes in, is BK going to come clean and let supporters know if the heart of the club will be ripped out also by getting rid of the Big Man, Sheedy & Stubbsy who have all done a great job with the kids these past few seasons?

Let's hope there are no more dark days like those of Mike Walker, Gordon Lee... Walter Smith.
