What? FIVE in a row?

 Comments (5) jump to end

As a matter of fact, we conceded first and conceded early goals for the last FIVE games in a row!

It started from the League Cup against Leeds and the next 4 games in the EPL against a bunch of relegation candidates:

  • Leeds scored first in 4 mins
  • Southampton scored first in 6 mins
  • Wigan scored first in 10 mins and again in 23 mins
  • QPR scored first in 2 mins
  • Liverpool scored first in 14 mins and again in 20 mins
Amazingly, in these five games, we only lost once. On the other side of the coin, we have won four and drawn one when we have scored first this season.

The defence must have some difficulty getting into the game early on and David Moyes needs to sort it out.

How can a top 6 side concede goals first to so many lesser teams like we did? We won't get any better and go any further if we keep chasing the game and we will lose matches against better opponents.

If you look a t those 5 goals you will see a number of them came from breakaways when we were the team applying all the pressure as advocated by a number of toffeewebbers.

You cant have it both ways unless you have unlimited pots of gold a la Chelsea and Man City.

Our defensive record and points haul still looks better then most and makes games more enjoyable although I understand the point you are trying to make.

BTW 2 of those goals have been OGs by Bainesy. Would we want to change him?

5 in a row — I thought you meant derbies where Everton have not won...

As Jay says, the problems with our conceding goals stems from our new-found more offensive style of play, plus the loss of Gibson who's not there to help protect the back four.

Obviously we don't want to reverse back to our more negative style of play so Moyes is going to have to come up with some way of tightening up the defense without affecting our more offensive style of play, which is what he is paid to do.
