The Liverpool - Chelsea Dilemma

 Comments (96) jump to end

I would usually expect to back whoever is playing Liverpool – regardless of how loathsome they might be in their own right.

However, this weekend, I am facing up to cheering on Liverpool against Chelsea. I wonder if others are doing the same or are you struggling with the following dilemmas:

1) Are you happy to want a Liverpool win when it benefits us or do you always want them to lose – even if we cut off our own noses in the process?

2) Are you looking downwards and wanting a Chelsea win so that we won't finish below 6th?

3) Or are you looking upwards wanting a Chelsea defeat so that they get drawn back towards us – even though we then have a greater risk that we might get caught for 6th?

Double dilemma or no-brainer? I am curious how other blues see it...

It's out of our hands now, due to Moyes sitting back away from home too many times, and Tuesday night was not enough. For us to have any chance we need the RS to win v Chelsea unfortunately.

Let Chelsea win and carry on winning until they play us, we're not going to catch them anyway. But I do think we could catch either of the North London clubs but maybe not both so we might have to be satisfied with Europa. I think the lowest we can finish is 9th but obviously we still want 4th.

Only want Liverpool to win if it stopped us being relegated or it won us a trophy.

CL is a bit spoof ... "jam tomorrow" given our recent cup exploits, Chelsea for me with Torres scoring 6 and benitez waving a flag saying "kopites are gobshites".

I'm not concerned either way. The main thing is our results: 5 games 15 points at stake... We have to play both of them, away games too.

One game at a time and lets rely on our performances rather than wanting others to help out... COYB.

Chelsea to win and play the reserves against us last day of the season as they will have third spot wrapped up by then.

Easy for me. If we beat Sunderland on Saturday, then I want Liverpool to w...to w..., nope can't do it, a draw would do. If we don't beat Sunderland, then we ain't got a sniff of catching Chelsea anyway, so they can score at will. Simple.
Dan McKie

Christopher, I reckon if we still had a chance by the Chelsea game, and they had it wrapped up, then Rafa would still want to nod to the reds by stopping us, unless the have a Europa league final or something.

I still can't understand folks on here still going on about 4th!! Listen - Chelsea will get another atleast another 9 points from their 6 remaining games and Arsenal will get 10 points from their 5 games. 3rd and 4th spots taken. We are NOT going to win all 5 remaining games and overhaul both. Please no more talk of CL!
Mark Frere

I see Chelsea as the one we just aren't going to catch, so I would like Chelsea to keep on winning and get to the europe cup final, so when we play them they have already qualified for CL and have their full attention on the Europa cup final.

I think all the games before the Chelsea match are winnable:
Sunderland(a)
Fulham(h)
Liverpool(a)
West Ham(h)

I'm being very optimistic here, but if we win all them 4 games, we will be on 68 points going into the Chelsea game and might of already qualified our selves. As iv'e said i'm being very optimistic and Arsenal and Spurs will after slip up.

I know it may sound daft but I really don't give a shit.
I am always of the opinion that the only games I am interested in are Everton games.
I truly have never looked at a RS game until we played them. As soon as it's over I don't think of it, as far as I'm concerned they are just another team.
I know it'sounds daft but I was born and brought up in Everton but to me they're just another piece of shite to beat !

Patrick Murphy
709 Posted 18/04/2013 at 19:55:16
Kunai If it's still mathematically possible it's still worth discussing, it may well be unlikely but it is not impossible. Chelsea are likely to get third place after last night's win at Fulham, they still have to play us and Spurs so they may do us a favour and we might get a win at their place as it comes 4 days after a possible Europa Final for them. Spurs hopefully will also lose against Man City and Arsenal have some tricky fixtures as well, so nothing can be taken for granted.

You may well be right and our chances may indeed be slim, but we can keep dreaming can't we? even if it only lasts a little while longer.

710 Posted 18/04/2013 at 19:55:03
As I see it, Arsenal is the team we must overtake on the table to get a Euro cup place....Since both Chelsea and Toots have one more game to play, I am sure our chances for the 4th spot is thinner than thin....and I would guess getting 9 points out of our last matches is all we realistically can hope for...and we might get, if lucky an extra point at AR. So therefor a chelsea win is fine by me.

I'm still positive. We need to beat Sunderland, then on Sunday, Spurs have Man City, and Chelsea have Liverpool. It is far from beyond the realms of possibility that the 2 teams that we want to drop points will do. A bonus would be Fulham finding their decent home form and getting something from Arsenal, who next week entertain Man Utd. If we can keep winning, we have a chance. COYB!!!

Liverpool to win, no question.

We need to get as many points as possible and hope our rivals drop as many points as possible. Obviously.

724 Posted 18/04/2013 at 20:42:49
Surely the old idea that you look after your own affairs and leave others to theirs is the only sensible way of looking at it? Obviously I support any team playing Liverpool and hope that they win but it is Everton who need to concentrate on themselves first and foremost.

Sunderland will be a hotbed of passion etc for all the obvious reasons but Everton are a better team than Sunderland and should just concentrate on their opponents and not the occasion etc.

Everton being Everton however we can never take anything as a foregone conclusion. We are just as likely to beat Sunderland, Liverpool and Chelsea away and then regret the draws at home against Fulham and WHU! Come on Blues, you can do it – come on Chelsea you can do it!

I take no pleasure in writing this, but reaching the Champions League is frankly pie-in-the-sky thinking.

We needed to beat both Spurs & Arsenal to be in with a genuine shout.

So, with Terry & Suarez making it look like a Klan Rally, I want Liverpool to get absolutely gubbed, Carragher & Coutinho sent off, Rodgers to lose the plot Keegan-style, Gerrard & Suarez stretchered off with career-ending injuries.

In the rain.

#716 Mark - Just because I post views that you don't agree with that does not make me negative. Yes, it's a possibility I agree getting a CL spot but realistically and in all probability it's unlikely to happen? No? As long as we finish above them, I don't really care if they win or lose. However, in this case it benefits us if they win so I will 100% be hoping for a Liverpool win - just like I'll be routing for citeh to get 3 points away to spurs.

Europe is unlikely and I even said a few weeks ago that we had no chance, however if results go our way (big if I know), we really do have a shot. Beat sunderland and if citeh beat spurs,we go 5th - which I think we might still get (don't think we will make CL).

Let start with a win away to Sunderland, if we don't get 3 points there then the Liverpool game probably doesn't matter anymore anyway.

Patrick #709 - 'nothing can be taken for granted'

How true, otherwise we would all be winning thousands on the coupon each week.

There'll be some twists yet, all we need to do is concentrate on winning our games, never mind Chelsea winning at Anfield, if we can do that it might help to take us somewhere special and if nothing else end the season with a bit of a fillip.

COYB!

If you look at their last few games, we have the best chance of catching Spurs. I think Chelsea are clear fav's for 4th anyway, and the best we can hope for is 5th, and Europa League. You can currently get 16/1 on us finishing in 4th, so I think 4th is long gone.

Personally, I have a few bets on we will finish above the shite, so I want Chelsea to stuff the twats.

Kev Johnson

I reckon if we get 11 points out of the last 15 then we'll finish 5th and be playing host to Marseilles, Molde and Mentalist Bigdiv in Europa League Group F next season.

That is, if we don't suddenly go into administration, have points 30 deduced and get relegated

I grew up with Dave Booth in Sale and hate Manchester United. I hate Liverpool, when they play each other it is twice a season the best game I enjoy watching. Every other game that is played I know who is want to win, the answer? Which team winning does best for Everton.

I hate them equally, the fans the grounds the players the managers even the bloke who announces the teams and the goal scorers.

Kevin #726, I can not quite wish injury on a player, but players sent off fighting supporters fighting, games abandoned are all wishes I have for them.

So, I can never decide who I want to win, trouble is we find ourselves sandwiched this weekend, could we catch CFCS and can we avoid being caught by LFC? I really do not know so I can only wish the worst upon them both.

As I posted on the other thread, if Chelsea win the Europa but do not get in the CL another place (note not extra) place is available to the PL positions and so on that basis I am almost thinking the unthinkable.

Football, I hate it

Kunal, come on mate - along with many others on this site, I am hoping for that elusive 4th spot. Yeah, maybe you're right, we won't get it this year but tell me, when was the last time you were able to talk 4th spot, enjoy analysing the remaining games and discuss with the boys over many vodka/cranberry drinks who you'd pick up should we come across that line for 4th! Nothing wrong with dreaming I'd say! #COYB!

Kunal, if you were positive afterwards about the draw at Arsenal, I bet you were predicting a defeat beforehand.

Being an Evertonian has always been a roller coaster ride of highs and lows, but as somebody else said only once in the last twenty three seasons simce 1990 have we come fourth or been in with a shout of it so late in the season. These are good times if you think about it relatively speaking. You are bad enough now, what the hell would you have been like in 1994, 1998 or the Walter years?

Kev Johnson - You're absolutely right, Karl & Mark should leave Kunal alone. I've always found Kunal's views to be balanced. There are others on this site who are really very negative. For what it's worth, Kunal isn't one of them.

As for the RS v Chelsea game, I want Chelsea to thump them, and thump them hard. I want the RS below us for another year. Moreover, without CL or Europa League money, they will start to feel the almighty dollar pinch. They'll have to sell Suarez and maybe a few others, an replace them with Titus Bramble, who'll the the only type of player they can afford !

We should aim for 5th !

David Ellis

Been playing around with the BBC predictor - good fun.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_prem/predictor/default.stm

According to my objective predictions, (ahem!) we finish 3rd, 1 point ahead of Arsenal and 13 ahead of the Shite - even if they beat Chelsea this weekend.

If Chelsea win, we can only finish 4th, so perversely I don't give a shit who wins.

Seriously though, the ONLY thing that matters is beating both of them away - without ALL those 6 points, there is NO chance of better than 5th - but if we get them, 4th is realistic, and even 3rd is still a long shot if we go unbeaten.

Taking the blue-tinted specs off, I think 5th is realistic.

I can't believe someone is even asking this question. There is no 'dilemma' for me.

We still have an outside chance of a top four place and Chelsea currently occupy one of those slots so we need them to lose, even if they play our deluded neighbours.

The RS are an irrelevance when it comes to the CL race. As long as we do the business at Sunderland we'll still at least be 6 points clear of them come Sunday evening.

Kevin Jones (844) - "Rolf Harris In Goal, Stuart Hall, Jim Davidson, Michael Barrymore, Dave Lee Travis, Len Fairclough, Kevin Webster, Saville Capt, Gary Glitter, Michael Jackson and Luis Suarez up front".

For a team of alleged sex attackers/paedos/molesters, I think it looks a fairly well-balanced side with a good mix of experience and youth.

However if Moyes does leave us in the summer and HE were to take over the reins of the alleged sex offenders squad, you would have to expect the immediate inclusion of Neville Neville, who would no doubt keep his place whatever.

In fact I almost hear...

Moyes: "Neville Neville is the first name on mah team sheet and even if the boy ended up being tried in the states and given the electric chair, I'd still select him. I know many want tae see Kevin Webster but he's wan fae the future and needs time tae develop. With that in mind, he's awa aff on loan for a month with the psychopathic murderers"

Etc

An 8-0 win for Chelsea with a few nasty injuries and an on-field a scrap between Carraghar and Rat-Boy would do me.

Carraghar would murder him.

I'm more worried about playing a revitalised Sunderland playing their first home game under Di Canio. Everyone thought we'd beat Southampton with their new guy in charge and we were lucky to snatch a point.

Eugene, Kevin Jones, Do you have a subs bench for the Paedo XI? No place for the striking partnership of Brady and Huntley?

Ray, not my team, I merely pointed out an Everton connection.

Kevin Jones actually put the side together and I'm sure he wouldn't want anyone fiddling with it.

That doesn't sound right...erm...I mean, I bet he wouldn't want anyone shoving their oar in!

Er... I mean.... interfering with him.

Oh bollocks, I give up.

I havent had time to read this thread so I could be repeating some points but chelsea winning does help our cause for the following reasons;
1. Chelsea are beyond us now anyway with 2 games in hand
2. Our best scenario now is to go to Stamford Bridge on the last day with them already having sown up 3rd (so their more concerned with their imminent trips to the Caribbean)
3. They still have to play spurs so were gonna need them to win that game if we have a chance of 5th/6th.
4. Their playing the shite and its never a bad thing to watch them lose.

So first and foremost i'll be an evertonian, then a fulham fan, then a city fan, and a chelsea win to top it off will do me fine. Coyb
