Guiness is good for you, Everton

 Comments (32) jump to end

There are numerous rumours going round over on this side of the Atlantic that Everton's name will be added to those of Inter, Juventus, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy plus 3 others (possibly Chelsea, Benfica and AC Milan) from July 27th to August 7th.

Two groups of 4 - remaining cities to be named, but Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, New York and Indianapolis have been confirmed.

I understood that Everton had already fixed a South Africa pre-season! Anyone out there any wiser on what has been planned?

If Everton do decide to be part of this tournament, surely that would improve on their usual visits to the USA????

Would be fantastic if they played in New York, I could finally see them!

It'd be great, and hopefully a more fun pre-season game to visit than our awful 1-0 loss to Philadelphia Union a couple of years ago!

I've heard rumours of it as well, and we were going to be playing in Miami. I've got my fingers crossed as that's only an hour and a half drive. Otherwise I'll be putting my airmiles to good use.

Hope it's true Gerry. Only 4 hours over to San Francisco. Might be tempted to make the run to Los Angeles as well to watch my two favorite blues - Everton and the Dodgers.

Steven - the Dodgers? Is that a team, or is that BK and the boardroom numpties? :)

I think the dodgers are the type of biscuits that DM banned from Finch Farm because they were too expensive well that's what Eugene told us.

Steve Sturm #685 - snap! I'm Everton and Dodgers too! Having a bit of a disaster across the pond, hopefully things are on the up for both teams. Think Blue......

A team with a great history that is only now starting to recover from ten years of criminal soul sucking mismanagement by an owner that makes BK look like a saint in comparison. Come to think of it Gerry, there might be some bit of resemblance between BK and ex Dodger Manager Tommy Lasorda (appearance only mind you) Tommy was and still is a great asset to the organization.

Hey Mike, that's great. Here's an idea - how do we get Magic Johnson and backers to buy Everton?
Mike Green
696 Posted 22/05/2013 at 21:55:38
Yep - lots of parallels, wish we had some of the cash the Dodgers can throw around at the moment. Just goes to show, cash isn't everything though. Terrible start to the season, a long long long way to go though.

Well, I'll see you boys in New York and Indianapolis.

I've lived in these United States since 2000 and the only sport I am really into over here is College Basketball. Had a fellowship for a year in Chapel Hill, season ticket for the Tar Heels, loved it;

Here's an excerpt of the code behind the website:

Just waiting to be announced it seems... although the others were supposed to be revealed on May 7 so maybe there is a hitch.

Just a thought, why is this thread called 'Guiness is Good for you, Everton?'
Robin Cannon

@Paul (717) - The tournament is sponsored by Guinness.

So many sports events sponsored by beer - they should let the players drink heavily before games. That would really make it much more interesting.

@Dave (712) - Seems very promising, but will flag that I often put in "holding" content into my code during development. Same for most developers, and really common for us to subsequently forget to remove that code in production!

...which is one of the main reasons why I started using Everton related terms rather than the likes of "fuck"!

Indeed Robin - I do much the same thing, mostly names of lady parts, but I'm a glass half full person so taking it as a positive.

Paul -

You need to tune into the NHL - especially now in the playoffs. No better sporting event on earth. The Blackhawks are (as I'm sure you know) an excellent hockey team. And the series with the Red Wings is an excellent one.

Kristian - where did you hear the Miami rumor? That's 5 hours south on I-95 for me and I'd be there in a heartbeat. Free lodging with some cousins to boot! Are they playing in Miami?

Mike and Steven - the Dodgers are a train wreck... SO much money spent and languishing at 19-26.

We were on their website a couple of months ago but they took us down for some reason.
Looks like we're in though, hopefully because Stephen M. Ross wants to showcase his new purchase.

Jamie #357 - you're right, it is a train wreck made up of mega-paid stars not cutting the mustard with little depth in the squad from what I can see. I can see it starting to turn around and get on track though, but what do I know. You're Red Sox aren't you? My brother is, took him to Fenway two years ago, it really was a cracking night out. Either way, best not let this thread go too far off Everton discussion! COYB!

Nice Jamie - I'll try, I know about them Blackhawks - my prob with NHL is the puck, I can never see it mate.

Isn't hockey like your Canada's national sport?

And you live in Vancouver, right, I love that city

Jamie, it was mentioned on the South Florida Evertonians Facebook page as a rumour earlier this week. Didn't have anymore info on it. I'm in Fort Myers, so it's a quick trip across Alligator Alley for me to Miami.

Paul -
The puck is an issue for ppl that didnt play the game. I watch hockey probably the way u watch soccer... I know where the puck is going 2 steps in front of where it currently is.

I've no such luck with soccer having only picked the game up 7 years ago.

That being said the sports are actually exceedingly similar IMO. I won't bore you with the details of that. But the "concepts" aren't that different. And the "tactics" are very, very similar in many ways.

Trap, left wing lock, dump and chase hockey are basically the same as dour, defensive drab soccer...

having played hockey my whole life, I preferred attacking, cross-over (overlap), heavy forechecking style. Offensive hockey - score more than the other team even if you give up 3-4 goals a game.

Probably why Moyes, once I "figured it out", pissed me off....

Kristian - TY. Here's hoping they play in Miami so the 5 hour drive from St Augustine is simple!

Mike Green - u did well to take your bro to the Cathedral of Baseball! Well done. Nothing wrong sitting with 39,900 drunk "Sullivans" (Irish Americans) watching a ball game! And best of luck to the Dodgers - I've no beef with them whatsoever.

Now back to all things Everton.... apologize for the tangent. :0)

It would be a fantastic opportunity to raise our profile in a country with a rich resource of potential support - especially when surrounded by some pretty illustrious other clubs. I think it would be perfect and hope we are not gearing up for a South African tour, especially when our only SA player is so disenfranchised he retired from the national team and has legal issues with political contacts there. Seems like a no brainer if we have the option.

However, I doubt we have the option as I would imagine our board have gone for the implausible and chosen the one with little or no revenue & allegiance opportunities or growth potential.

"LA Galaxy?? Why are we playing such terrible opposition in pre-season" - A typical ToffeeWeb post if this happens.

I can see it now, Paul:

ToffeeWeb - LA Galaxy?? Why are we playing such terrible opposition in pre-season

BarcaWeb – Real Madrid?? Why are we playing such terrible opposition in pre-season

InterWeb – AC Milan?? Why are we playing such terrible opposition in pre-season

Or will ALL of their websites be:

“Barca/Real/Inter/AC/Benfica”Webs - Everton?? Why are we playing such terrible opposition in pre-season

I would love it - LOVE IT!! if we were to take part in this tournament.

It would be a great way to boost our profile overseas (which is poor compared to what it should be) and we would be able to test ourselves against top opposition.

Can just picture Pereira leading our Blues out against those lot!!!

[slaps own face, hard to wake up]
