Encouragement for Rodwell from Distin

Distin explains the risk injuries pose
Jack Rodwell has endured some wretched luck with injuries, but the challenge now is to steer clear of the treatment table. Sylvain Distin concedes that niggling problems can be difficult to shake off, but is confident Rodwell can get back to his best.

Distin said: “He is working hard and he will be fine. Sometimes injuries like that happen and you have to accept it.

“Sometimes you will have a spell of months, seasons and years when you have nothing and then you will have two, three or four in a row.

“You just have to keep strong, keeping working and make sure you come back even better.

“We don't have a big squad, so we feel every injury we suffer. Jack has enough quality to be a great player.

“It would be good if we could just let him play his football and not put too much pressure on his shoulders. That is all that we want and that is all he wants. He just wants to play football.”

“Everyone is different. You like to work hard but some players cannot do that — if they work too hard it can injure them.

“It is for Jack to understand his body and how it works. I can't tell him to do this or that. It is for him to find out.”

Jack has the talent to become a Prem top player but the injury bug hitting someone so young is disheartening for his confidence, the club and the fans. We all hope that he gets a real good run free from niggles and that The Blues reap the benefit.

Heard rumours that Jack will be Everton's number 8 next season.

This past season was the first one in 15 years that Distin had an injury that cost him more than a game or two. He's played in about 500 league games. Rodwell just needs to hang out with Distin more. Maybe some of that invulnerability will rub off.

Sorry to veer off topic but the thread concerning Leighton Baines and his rumoured transfer has been closed, and I am unable to answer certain comments: I for one am worried about the speculation – especially after having been through it all before e.g. Rooney, Lescott etc – and until Baines comes out and tells us he's going nowhere then it's no wonder rumour is rife. I think the fans deserve the players to make decisions known as soon as possible to end the speculation; we deserve this much from well-paid employees, if only to save parents getting shirts with the players' name on.
