Capital One Cup Preview

Everton's first cup foray comes less than 10 days after they kicked off the new Premier League season with that adrenaline-fueled victory over Manchester United in the form of a home tie — a club-record 10th successive home tie in both the League and FA Cups — against Leyton Orient.

The Blues are the highest-seeded team in the second round stage of the newly-renamed Capital One Cup and will be hoping to make swift work of the League One side.

While David Moyes will not underestimate the potential for a cup upset, he will almost certainly make changes from the players that started against United and Aston Villa in the opening two League games as he shuffles his small squad.

New signing, Kevin Mirallas, is almost guaranteed to make his full debut in front of the Goodison faithful after his 20-minute cameo at Villa Park, and there may be opportunities at some stage for the likes of Ross, Barkley, Francisco Junior, Shane Duffy, Apostolos Vellios and Victor Anichebe to stake a first-team claim in what is now a more competitive first-team environment.

John Heitinga could also make his first start of the campaign, having started both of Everton's prior games on the substitute's bench, and Moyes has deployed second-choice goalkeeper Jan Mucha in the early rounds of this competition in the past, albeit to his cost against Chelsea last season.

These two clubs last met in cup competition in January 2002 in the 4th Round of the FA Cup when Duncan Ferguson and Kevin Campbell were banging in the goals and Paul Gascoigne gave what was by then a rare glimpse of his genius by bossing the game from start to finish.

The Blues ran out 4-1 winners and they'll be hoping for a similarly comfortable run-out this time around.

It's the only League Cup game on tonight. Does that mean it's on the telly? If so, what station?

I looked through the stream sites, no sign of it so far. Doubt it's gonna be on telly live.

Here in South America the sports channels seem to think the Champions League is more important for some peculiar reason... anyway no joy here, so if anyone finds a stream it would be great to hear about it...

Very difficult to find any stream.. Sky Sports News will show brief highlites in their 10pm news bulletin.

Anyhow myself and the kids looking forward to seeing a solid performance. And getting a first full look at the wonder kid.

I'm not sure what DM makes of this competition; last season, we could have taken care of Chelsea, but went in with a weak team, and lost out (goalkeeper for me).

Do we want to go far in this? I wouldn't mind a day out at Wembley, but if we are still in the top 4 (league) come December, DM won't risk players in this, QF, or SF, after Xmas.

Unfortunatly it's very difficult to get streams for any domestic cup game unless it's actually shown on BBC/ITV live anyway. Most of the streams run from International sources who have paid specifically for the Premier League.

I would like to see Jonny and Duffy start at the back with Coleman at right back and only a couple of the first team in the side to add experience. Some of the squad players need game time and this is an ideal chance to play 6-7 of them from the start.

That's what I'm going for. Although decisions need to be made about Vellios and Victor. Are they good enough? Or do we get rid? I can see Moyes playing a few more established players than I have opted for there. Then again, a very similar team to the one I selected just got drilled 5-1 against West Ham U21's.

All the talk of Junior... then nothing. I wish we could bring our kids on further and quicker. Anichebe, Rodwell and Vaughan never fulfilled potential. We need to bring some through then stop worrying about who we have to buy.

Shame we won't see how they're fairing tonight.

He clearly doesn't trust Barkley - it's a real shame and I would love to see him play more. I guess we have to trust, and agree, that Moyes sees him at work every day and knows him far better than us. Bizarre though.

You'd hope Garbutt, Duffy and Barkley will play a fair amount of the game. You can only think he hasn't started Duffy or Barkley as they haven't played any competitive games against players who are 4/5 games into the season.

I don't see the point in sending out a very strong side but dropping Howard, keepers don't need rest. I'm a little disappointed not to see Duffy and Barkley start and what the fuck is Anichebe doing in the team.

Stuart, it might be because Barkley isn't a right back, or he just isn't as good as you think, or he might not be fully fit, or he might have a terrible attitude.

He most probably went for Neville so we could keep a relatively similar back four. Go three up in the first half and bring on Barkley in the second half, moving Coleman to right back and taking Neville off.

After all, the reserves are hardly pushing the first team for places are they?

Jamie – It looks more like Coleman is in at right back. With Neville in centre mid alongside Osman, and one of Mirallas or Anichebe on the right wing.

I've no idea why Barkley isn't starting either - good enough to start Premier League matches last year, but not to start against a League One team who are yet to win a match this season one year on...?

I also would have thought that at 35, Phil Neville would need a rest more than most....
