Signing schoolboy terms with Everton in 1981, Ebbrell went on to captain England Schoolboys at differing age groups. Many thought that he was destined for international recognition, but it would be fair to say that the midfielder simply didn’t fulfil his potential.

Blast from the past. I remember at Uni reading a lengthy article in the Indie on Sunday that predicted he'd be an England captain for a decade...

He was similar to Leon Osman in many ways. Quietly did his job and never went missing, even when it wasn't running for him.

Injury did for him - think he had a series of ankle injuries(?) and eventually HK bought him for Sheff Utd for £1m. I think he played 1 game for them.
