Why Everton fans should prepare for Fellaini's inevitable departure

Once again, Chelsea are being linked (in the Daily Star with a move for Marouane Fellaini. David Anderson argues that the Toffees must now get the best price they can. And, as unwelcome as this speculation is for Everton and their fans, they had better get used to it because it isn't going to go away.

I would say a non story, in the sense that we are already expecting him to leave and for the Club to screw the best price they can.....cash..,upfront....no payments down the line.......and no fringe players from whoever he ends up with as part of the deal. Oh, and our manager (whoever that may be) to be given the cash received to spend (some hope)

It's from the Daily Star and the Mirror so it isn't true.

I think we will sell him and Moyes will talk Owen out of retirement to join us in the Champions League!!!

What a lazy, "I cant be arsed" piece of journalism from someone who has clearly stayed in a Fleet Street Wine Bar too long the night before and is penning this ditty on the tube as the battery on his kindle has run out.

Talk about stating the bleeding obvious.

Steve, I'd take Lukaku as a fringe player.

Let him go, but we must make sure we make some sort of decent profit from the deal. No half-measures... after all, Chelski aren't worried about wasting their own money, but we need every penny for Negredo... A blue boy can dream!!!

Fellaini = £25m (we hope!)
For that we may be able to get (as an example) Fer/Capoue, Lescott, Negredo which in my eyes is a pretty good deal.
Or Fer/Capoue, Lescott, Vossen and Sinclair/Ince?
Pure speculation obviously!!

It all sounds good put like that but the wages will be the thing. Fellaini is on £75k a week. Fer, Negredo and Lescott would probably cost us twice that in wages.

Yet another example of the main-stream media losing credibility. What Everton fans have known for some time.

With the season winding down and Man Utd certain to win the Premier League, the media will as usual make great speculation to fill their columns and, of course, when there is no news, they will invent it.

The Fellaini situation has been around since Christmas; most fans believe he will move and I am one of them. Everton need the money to get new blood and the big fee they will get for Fellaini could well get them several players.

The question is: Will it be Moyes making the moves? I for one hope not. He has had his chances and his track record on good buys versus bad buys is about 50/50 and Everton are still an average outfit.

As an Evertonian I am prepared for such a traumatic event as Fellaini departing. However, I might struggle if Moyes stays.

I think Gavin's (953) point re wages is an important one.
Everton's net transfer spend over the last 10 years is about £10m (ie average of £1m per year) which is stuff all. However, our wage bill has continued to creep up and up in an effort to keep our best players. This is unsustainable in the long term and arguably in the short term too. So, even if we do make a good profit on Fellaini then we need to be very picky on who we buy. Lescott for example would need to take a major pay cut which he might not be prepared to do? Obviously, picking up younger players "on the rise" or bringing players from abroad who may (not always) be on lower wages is one strategy but easier said than done.
