Blues linked with Rodallega

04/07/2012 | Comments (34)
It was bound to happen sooner or later while he is still available but Everton are being linked with a move for Hugo Rodellega who is available on a free transfer after leaving Wigan Athletic.

There could be some substance to this rumour, though, and it might not just be the usual Mail nonsense. The player has Premier League experience and could be worth a punt on a free transfer to add depth to the squad.

Think this las is bit of a mercenary and not too impressed by his displays last season. He's got some talent though and a good few years left in him.

Wonder if it's true which position he would be earmarked for. Behind jelavic or on the wing? Is the daily mail of course so most likely total fantasy...

This was reported on Sky Sports with the source being "The Sun".....

In the same report it also linked Andy Carroll with a move to AC Milan.

*cough*

I laughed.....

Sam its disingenuous calling Rodallega a mercenary as he's only ever played for Wigan in the UK.

The story sounds like bollocks to me even if it does fit on with the potless Everton scenario and more likely than spending £16m on a 29 year old.

Carroll story seems ridiculous until you remember they also signed jordan, blisset and hateley...

Gavin, not sure disingenuous is quite the right word but it may be slightly unfair or unmerited.

Just going on some of the things I heard him say. He's only been there 3 years and spent most of the last year saying that he wanted to move to a bigger club. Which of course he's more than entitled to do.

Certainly more likely than the Cardozo rubbish!

Bit of a cart horse in my opinion, I would be looking at Moses although he is linked with the RS.

Peter, Chelsea allegedly had a £10m bid rejected and the RS have allegedly been told they will have to stump up £12m, so I think Moses might be just out of our reach.

I think Rodallega is a decent player, as a second striker maybe. I dont think you can rely on him being the main goal threat. Also, I think he has been fairly loyal to Wigan, struggling every year cant be fun, and he has previously been linked with Arsenal for a summer or two, with talk of £15 million. Lets face it, bar Jelavic, our options up front are shocking!

Surely Jelavic, Naismith and Rodellega would be a huge step up on Jelavic, Anichebe and Denis/Velios.

Maybe Davey wants to play the Chelsea way with Rodellega and Naismith either side of Jelavic

Now that we have Naismith I don't see this happening...We still have big Vic and Velios... Unless he can play on the wing!

David Chait 072,

You say 'Now we have Naismith' — is it a done deal?

Steve King

Sign him up I say!!

Was only a year ago he was linked with Chelsea, Tottenham and The Shite in a big money deal.
Clearly something has gone astray for the lad, but I seem to remember similar situations with Pienaar and Gibson before we signed them?
Pineaar was undoubtedly a success and Gibson looks to be heading in the same direction.

Beggars can't be choosers, if we can rejuvenate players rather than overspend on them at their peak then that's fine by me!!

He's another Anichebe.

Looks like our one rumour coming true per one hundred false has happened already this season. OS is confirming Naismith has signed. This rumour is a no go then.

A lot of rumours on other websites about Rodellega. He is on a free. If so, would Naismith be for the right-side of midfield?

Brian 101, I think you'll find there is only one Anichebe.

No thanks...

Please no....

No, no, no — he is crap!

Another Anichebe he aint ! Better on the floor, in the air, more pace, knows how to spring the off side trap, can take a spanking free kick, I'd sign him up, if we can get this lad back in form we're looking at 45 goals between him and Jella with Kneesmith contributing another 10 or so.

Get him in, he cannot be worse than Anichebe.
Jon Ferguson

Brian - I agree with Steve, that Rodallega is a much more rounded player than Anichebe. With our squad around him (rather than Wigan's) he could further improve.

Anichebe is reaching a make or brake time in his career. He is young and has the talent to be a Premiership player at somewhere like Wigan. He's not going to get in at us ahead of Jelavic. It is the right time for him to move on and be a first choice striker elsewhere. If we can pick up a few million for him that would be perfect all round.

Rodellega then would be an improved replacement with a few extra quid to spend on strengthening somewhere else.

I seem to think that Wigan started playing again when Rodallega came back from injury - although I can't say I followed it closely at all.

But from what I've seen of him I wouldn't think of comparing him to Vic - more mobile, more of a threat with the ball. He could fit in with us, something, I'm afraid, Vic never really has done.

I like him, he has some pace too. I think we would need to be losing Cahills wages first though, even if it does happen it will be too late. Why oh Why was he given 50k a week till he's 47!

I would take him and pienaar, and would think the squad has improved considering we have no real money. Rvp would be a good foil if arsenal wanted a loan deal...

You ain't watched him much have you Brian?
Denis Richardson

I would be happy if we signed him. Has pace (which we dont have), has prem experience and knows where the goal is. If his wages are relatively low and the sigining on fee not much, then well worth a punt. He still relatively young as well.

He's a dame sight better than Macfadden and Anichebe!

Am a bit surprised he's not been signed up already to be honest, wonder if there is something we dont know about - e.g. why would Wigan let him go and not offer him an extension?

Steve Smith,

55 goals?! You think that 3 strikers with a combined transfer cost of around £5m will score more goals than our entire team did last year? As well as half the other teams in the league? That is ambitious in the extreme.

Personally I'm not a huge Rodallega fan, I think he flatters to deceive an awful lot and his finishing can be woeful. He also only got 3 goals last season (half of Anichebe's total) and has only got into double figures once in his 4 seasons at Wigan, so i'm guessing you expect Jelavic to get at least 30?

This is something that worries me slightly with the way people talk about Jelavic. Believe me, I'm an optimist, but I just think the way people keep saying he'll score 25+ and is worth £20m+ is a little over the top.

He did brilliantly last year and I have no doubt he's a class act but I think it would be a good season for him if he got anything over 15 goals, and I hope people aren't setting him up for a fall if he hasn't got into double figures by October.

Jimmy,
It's a bit optimistic I know, {I always am until 10 minutes into the new season} but I do think Jelas well capable of 20, Rodallega I reckon is easily capable of double figures in our squad, and I think Naismith might chip in with a decent tally as well, but on this occasion I am prepared to downgrade my optimism and forecast 45 between all three of them................and Ossie to bag 15 and Hibbo a goal every other game !

Is it just me or does the Mail come up with more Everton fabrications than any other publication?

I can see why they put two and two together on this one, but aside from this, they really are the worst, followed by the Mirror in a distant second.

Other renowned purveyors of utter horse shit include football365, tribal football and Talk sport.. They should be bloody ashamed of themselves.

If Jelavic stays fit he will trouble 20 league mark. But if he doesn't stay fit we have a big problem and a signing along the lines of Rodelllega or someone who has the capacity play on their own up top would be a good idea. This was one of the problems with Beckford, he was useless at playing lone striker, couldn't play wide and we got a very good offer when we needed the cash. In an ideal world we would run big enough squads to have kept him as an impact sub and sometimes start in a 4-4-2 but we don't. So you need to be able to play lone striker or be a versatile reserve.

Hopefully Moyes will never leave us as light up top as he did this season. He would never consider leaving himself as thin at centre half. I'm hoping we can get another striker in for genuine cover and would be happy with Rodellega on a free, or something along those lines.

Vic hasn't justified his deal mainly due to his injury record and may need to drop a level where, injury free, I think he can flourish. But the deal may just about be justifiable if we can get £3 million for him. Rodellega would be improving the squad, Naismith gives us number and options. Fuck me I've just realised I'm being positive!!

Yeah sorry Steve, reading that back it came across like I was having a go but that's not what I meant.

As I say, I do think Jelavic is capable of getting 20+ but i'm a bit concerned that some people are banking on it and will think it's a failure if he doesn't. I think we have to be aware that teams know his threat now and are going to be more geared up to stopping him.

Also while I'm not really a fan of Rodallega I am aware that beggars can't be choosers and he would do a decent job on a free if we can't do any better.

You can't even compare Anichebe and Rodallega, two completely different playing styles. We seem to have moved on from the big target man/long ball shite in recent seasons, hence why Vic is often employed on the wing. I see Rodallega and Naismith as vying for that 'No. 10' position behind Jelavic. Both players would come in on a free and we would have a bit of competition for that role, where's the negative in that? Rodallega had a bit of a stinker last season only netting a few times I think, however, this was after he had tried to engineer a move last summer. Imagine if Lescott (and his attitude) would have stayed on after 'that' Arsenal game a couple of years ago, he wouldn't have been in the starting XI for long. Now Rod could get the move he's been after, we get a bit of competition for Jelavic/Naismith/Vic/Vellios and all for zilch in terms of transfer fees...

Jimmy,
No problem mate, I didn't take it as you having a go.

Peter,
A blazer steward eh? from now on, I hope you realise that you are our eyes and ears in the corridors of power.
Now first off, where's Timmy going and how much are we getting for him?
