Confusion over Baxter's Everton future

07/07/2012 | Comments (10)
Despite Tweeting this week that he has not been released by Everton, there is mounting speculation that Jose Baxter is leaving the Club.

The 20-year-old used the social media platform to assure fans that he was not leaving, saying: "For those asking I have not been released by Everton."

Sources elsewhere on Twitter are claiming, however, that Baxter has indeed left the club after turning down a new contract and he could be bound for Crystal Palace.

Once touted as the next great thing off the Everton Academy production line, Baxter has struggled to break into the first team at Goodison Park. He spent time on loan at Tranmere Rovers last season but was expected to sign a new two-year contract with the Blues last month.

There has, obviously, been no official confirmation one way or the other.

I actually go more onto his twitter than any of the first team as I am fascinated by his development and lack of opportunity. A guy that was better than Rooney at 14, consistently one of our best reserve players, per reports, just isn't give a go. It has always concerned me that his England youth opportunities also seem to have vanished. Don't know what to make of it all!

He has no pace. You can have all the tricks, but if you can't get away from your man it's a waste of time.

He is a talent, but also holds onto the ball too much.

He certainly played very well alongside Barkley against Arsenal reserves at the end of last season. Agree that he lacks a bit of pace, as does Osman, and his temperament is a bit 'spikey' but he does have something about him.

Most probably needs a full year out on loan at a Championship club.

He would make a good Championship player; not good enough for Everton first team. I watched him a few times for the reserves; he's a just average player.

I remember catching an England U17 game against Germany a few years ago, 2009 I think. Although England lost, he was England's best player that day, playing a kind of deep lying playmaker role, he was better than both Jack Wilshere and John Bostock that day in England's midfield. All England's attacking play seemed to go through him. The Echo's Neil Jones also told me that Tranmere were delighted with him last season.

Shame it looks like his talent won't be fulfilled.

The lad is definitely off. He's not on the tour and there's seemingly no good reason for that, plus his own words on twitter. It's a shame to lose the guy as he really loves the club. That said, he's had chances and has done even less than Anichebe. If we can get £2 mil for him then it's good business.

I did hear from someone very well connected at Palace that he would be joining them on a permanent basis. That was several weeks ago mind you...
