Fresh link with Blackpool winger

14/07/2012 | Comments (51)
Everton are again being linked with a move for Blackpool's Matt Phillips, with Sky Sports suggesting that the Blues are in "pole position" ahead of Wigan, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Reading for the 21 year-old.

There were rumours on Merseyside yesterday that David Moyes was turning his attentions back to the winger who scored seven goals in the Tangerines' promotion push last season that foundered at the last hurdle in the play-off final at Wembley.

The first speculation that Everton were interested in Phillips surfaced in late May but things have been quiet regarding the Scottish international since.

Also it looks as if Owen has gained a few Everton players as followers on Twitter.

Not sure how many of them were on there before but I think this might be happening.

Would be happy with Phillips looks a good player got pace and score a goal..
Owen please no, turned us down how many times let him find a bench
somewhere else...

Personally would rather see Hallam Hope coming through and getting game time.

But Owen might be useful, still going to score goals as back up to Jelavic.

Strange reactions to the possibility of Owen at Everton. Despite his poor judgement in terms of who he has played for in the past, he is still a premiership standard finisher, albeit in my view from the bench or short term injury cover. He's on a free but will I suspect cost a smaller than average signing on fee at a time when players in similar positions are demanding crazy money. If the finance is right it has to be a solid squad addition at low risk. He is a reliable family man, popular in the dressing room and will be attracted to our project. I get that he's obviously been a kopite bastard, but part of me relishes the thought of him in a blue shirt celebrating a goal against them, big smile that one ! having said all this I thought the rumour was all rubbish, started by a guy on Twitter for a laugh, and bizarrely repeated by the useless Echo.....but it's starting to look like a joke that could be real...for a change.

Truth is, this may get headlines if it does indeed happen but it's hardly as important as the arrival of Naismith, or we hope Piennar and the urgent need for at least three others.... Another forward, a right sided winger and please, please, someone with a bit of creativity in the centre.
Cheers, Mark Rustyman

Phillips looks like another good young winger and if Hoillet is a no go I'd be quite happy with Phillips.
I find the Owen link strange, the moment I heard he'd been released from United I knew he'd be linked with us, for me I'm sat on the fence regarding him still a good finisher which is what we need as we can create chances but his fitness is a real issue, no good having him as back up in case Jelavic gets injured if Owen is more likely to be injured at the same time, plus a pay as you play deal would be the only way I'd even consider him.

Think Phillips could be a great signing. Bit of pace and power.

Speed gathering to this owen rumour. I suppose if he's on a pay as you play it can't do too much harm?

I like the look of Phillips. Good on the ball, can finish, and most importantly has a bit of pace. How much would we be paying though? I wouldn't go above £4 million.

Owen is a strange one all right. What will he bring that others with a better record over the last couple of seasons wouldn't. I can't see Moyes being that desperate but you never know.

How much is Philips valued at? I wonder will it involve a player trade on our part. Blackpool are a full season out of the premiership now so money will be getting a little tighter, parachute payments or not. A couple of players coming in with premier league experience for one of theirs going out might seem like a good trade to them. It would give us a chance to offload some of the fringe players as well.

Can't find any concrete evidence on Owen... Just that we're linked with him. Where does all this come from?
Mark Riding
994 Posted 14/07/2012 at 19:55:00
Coleman could go the other way in a deal with Blackpool possibly, he played well for them, and if Im honest, as much as I like Seamus, I dont think he will make it.
Graham Tansey
996 Posted 14/07/2012 at 20:03:33
WTF. Coleman's first full season and he was up for young player of the season. Last season had injury problems. No way we should get rid.

Believe it when I read it. My instinct is no because he's always breaking down. Fergy didn't exactly wear him out with playing time, yet he broke down anyway. As others have posted here and there, rather see our youngsters getting games.

But if in cheap and Moyes' fitness program can get him healthy? Can't see the harm. The body goes but not the predator's instinct.

Bet you any money that if Owen is on his way, it will form part of a Baines deal - God, I hope not - on both counts!!!
Alasdair Mackay
008 Posted 14/07/2012 at 21:19:24
How can Owen form part of any Baines deal, Gerry?

Owen is not a Manchester United player. He is a free agent. I think Owen would be a good signing. He scores goals.

Would like to see Phillips here as well - if it means we lose Coleman, though I am not sure!

Mark Riding, Coleman seems to be one of those players that rarely gets a mention come the transfer window yet is someone that when he does, we seem happy to let go. I do think that we may not see him get much better in an everton shirt. He is down the pecking order at right back and as a winger is something of a one trick pony. We could easily raise a couple of million for him or use him in a player trade deal.

Mark Lennon, agree with the lack of concrete evidence. Just because it's twitter and not the tabloids doesn't mean it true.

My only concern as usual is the finances to fund such a move. I think Phillips looks a great prospect, but even if Blackpool allowed him to leave for a few million and we are in talks with Peinnar for 5 million, where do they find the 7 or 8 million? The Yobo deal looks dead at present with the Turkish side once again, threatening to look elsewhere. Sadly it will require more than the sale of Anichebe to cover that amount. As for Coleman going the other way, why? The lad was superb the season before last, if he can stay clear of injuries he will be fine, especially if Moyes can refrain from such supportive comments like "at times he looks like a 50,000 pound signing" As for Owen, even on a pay as you play I would not go anywhere near him. if they have the funds to support his wages why dont they look at younger prospects from the lower leagues?

We should keep hold of Coleman and move him to right back, Phillips looks quality and hope we get him.

I live in Blackpool and take note of what they are doing, and went down to wembley to watch their championship playoff final, and whilst Phillips has potential, I personally think he is at his level where Blackpool are. His first touch is nowhere near up to standard for the premier league yet, he goes missing for long periods of games and I'm yet to see him cross a ball in all the times I have watched him, though the last one could be down to the way Holloway plays him. Moyes and having better players around him may well rectify these issues, but if Blackpool are thinking he is worth anywhere near the £5 million they were wanting last season, they need to think again.

If we do get Phillips, along with Naismith and Pienaar (hopefully) and if we keep playing the 4-2-3-1 formation like we were towards the end of last season, surely we can push for the Europa league. However, IF this comes to fruition I can't see Barkley getting the gametime he needs, because I imagine Felli and Gibbo would be the 2 holding midfielders with Felli linking up with the attacking 4 of Naismith, Pienaar, Phillips and Jelavic. Of course there will be injuries, but there is also the matter of Dave's faves Cahill, Osman and Neville as well as Rodwell to get ahead of.

We have just let one over the hill, injury-prone striker in Saha leave (albeit after he gave some good service to the club); why get another one in?

Give Vellios match time and give him a chance to at least show if he can develop.

Rumours, rumours, rumours. Anything written in stone yet? Nada. It's all junk so let's forget about new signings.

If Vellios hasn't improved since last season then he won't get a place and that goes for Big Vic too. Just coming in and scoring a goal won't cut it with Moyes. Just ask Rooney. You have to be consistent like Ossie... (oops!)

Owen? — no chance! I don't want the little shit.

As for people saying Ince, did you watch Blackpool in the play-off final? — he was woeful. It would be backward step but Phillips has a bit of pace which we need but I don't know if he would be a hit in the Prem.

".....Coleman at RB? I'm sorry, he'd get torn to shreds!...."

Here here. Not a RB simple as that. First exhibit for the prosecution his brainless lunge at Gerrard that led to their second goal in the semi.

A deal involving Coleman to Blackpool for Phillips sounds like a plan.

Once they lose 3 of their first 4 games. The RedShite Mafia will hound him out. Big money for shite players; if this kid was any good would Chelsea have let him go?

Why no other Premier League club in for him? They are Shite have always been shite and will always BE Shite.

Owners? He's got to deal with the 'national treasure' yet.

But yes, sad to see KKK go, again. A bit like the plot of 'Psycho' – the PI sent to find the money looked like the hero who was going to sort everything out. But he ended up in the swamp with the rest of them. This puts Stevie GBH in the Norman Bates role – quite appropriate really, and he looks a bit like him don't you think?

Tony Doran, I'm surprised we haven't been linked with Jeffers. It would have been a more obvious rumour to spread than the Owen one. I suppose the Owen one is funnier though as he is ex red shite.

I'd have no problems with Coleman going in the opposite direction here, the lad has never got a fair crack of the whip with Moyes.

I said it on here before countless times, the lad is a right back. I watched a lot of Seamus when he was at Sligo and he only ever played right back – and a good one at that. Moyes came across him by chance when he brought him on against Spurs in that 2-2 draw as we had so many injuries.

If the lad was good enough, he would have replaced Hibbert and Neville by now, so for a lad who's at best third choice right back, we can afford to move him on as he has been found out as a winger. It's a shame as he seems to have a great attitude, work rate and gives great time to the fans.

Apparently the Daily Mail (yeah... I know) has Yobo linked with Norwich for a million pounds... Fresh competition for the Turks or are we just not going to make any money off him?
