Baines rejects Man Utd move?
No source or evidence is provided — though it appears to have originated on the Grand Old Team forum and the speculation is being fueled further on Twitter — but the rumour is that he will eschew the chance to sit on the bench and watch Champions League football and instead will stay with Everton.

The recent Pranjic quote a la not wanting to risk waiting till end August got me thinking at the time maybe he'd been told if anything happens, it will be late, and he couldn't take the risk of being without a club. The first tranche of EPL payment is made August 1 - and has been borrowed against for the past 2 years. Prior to that it used to be this money that was used for late signings, when there was no significant outgoing transfer.

The Mirror started off the transfer talk way back with £5m mentioned. Given Baines has time left on his contract, and is the 2nd choice left-back for England, just how could they sacrifice journalistic integrity so easily by coming up with a figure of £5m? Oh, because Everton are strapped for cash. Um, then selling off your most valuable assets under-value will help how? But with this Board I suppose anything is possible.

I've just read an article in the Sunday Times stating that Utd have never paid a fee for any outfield player over the age of 26 apart from Berbatov. And Ferguson is singing the praises of Tyler Blackett, an 18-year-old left back. Maybe the "race to sign Baines" is all paper talk anyway.
Ferguson also states that Utd are not like City and are developing a young team, with the likes of Smalling, Wellbeck etc, and could actually field a young team if required. It made me think that Utd may not be looking to spend much money apart from the offer for Van Persie.
The whole Pienaar thing is quite depressing if you consider it. We sell Pienaar for a reported £3m. He can't get a game at Spurs. So we pay a loan fee to have him back for 4 or 5 months, then reportedly want to buy him back for £5m. I'm no businessman but that lot doesn't make much sense to me.
And don't get me started on the Yobo fiasco!

As for Yobo it sounds like the Turks tried to screw us over. Thats not our fault. I'm hopeful both deals will go through this week.

I was aware of the background to the Pienaar deal, I just think it's bad management to let it get that far. If he had no desire to sign a new contact before it reached the 12 months left stage, then we should have sold him for a better amount.
As for Yobo, if the Turks weren't prepared to buy him after twelve months then bring him back and, if necessary, put him on the transfer list. I seem to remember that Arsenal had expressed an interest in him at one point, and if Huth, Senderos etc. can be sold for more than a tin of beans and some humus then Yobo would have had a value of more than the untrustworthy Turks are trying to pay. What a fiasco.

Mark #079, a sports journalist is still a journalist. They are still paid by the likes of Trinity or News International. Given News International have an agenda to pump up the coverage of the Premier League, and footballers' propensity for getting themselves on the front page as well as the back? Or do you think that only B list actors and kidnapped schoolgirls had their phones hacked?

Baines can't reject what hasn't been offered to him and I've yet to see any evidence that United have made any formal contact with either EFC or the player himself. So, for me this, this remains an entirely media-driven story until I'm persuaded otherwise.

Pienaar at £5 million after selling him for £3 million. Spurs have the upper hand in any deal because he has 4 years of his contract left so if the deal does go through they are in a win-win situation.
As for Baines, saying he is staying is all well and good if true... but, if someone comes in with a realistic offer, the board will make the ultimate decision whether he stays or not; it is simple business economics because that is the what the game is now, a business.

My feeling on the Piennar business is that Spurs are just looking to re-coup their money and Everton is waiting them out. After all, they don't need or want Stevie; that's apparent. Their move for him last season worked brilliantly.
It crippled what little of an attack Everton possessed, as was obvious once he left us. By mid-season they were so far ahead of us, they'd've had to start forfeiting games for us to remotely have a chance to catch up. Us no longer a threat, they loaned him back.
Piennar in no way pulls weight on Spurs similar to Lampard and Terry at Chelsea. But will AVB want anything resembling disgruntled players before the season even starts after the players dumped on him last season? I'd guess, no.
Add Moyes's comments on the situation and Piennar's professional conduct throughout the whole thing, I say it comes down to a few pounds one way or the other and he's back in Blue.

I never thought for one minute Baines would want to leave; he just doesn't seem the money-grabbing 'grass is greener' type of person (Hey Wayne...) It would be a massive fillip not just for us fans but for the club as a whole... unless Gordon Clegg has other ideas. Now where have we heard that before?

This latest ploy of making us pay more for a player they don't want is yet another example of Everton and its board's inefficient naivety especially if we end up paying millions more to get back a player we could have kept in the first place by using those self same millions to concede his demand for pay parity with Arteta who we sold at the same time and whose wages would have more than compensated for the extra we paid to Pienaar.
So all our brilliant Manager and Board have succeeded in doing is LOSING Pienaar's services for half a season for no gain whatsoever.

"These are:
- From the end of the playing season to 1700h BST 31st August.
- 1st to 31st January (or to the Monday 2nd February if the 31st January is a Saturday)
As far as I am aware it is still only 23rd of July with a long way yet to go and of course as we all know most action takes place close to deadline day.

You’re right in that Spurs saw it as a “win-win” for them - cheap player who they can sell on for a profit if it doesn’t work out plus it also weakens a competitor. That situation was handed to them on a plate by Pienaar delaying his negotiations and us not forcing the issue. Neither they, he, nor we, could necessarily have banked on us being the team he’d return to either.
To suggest we could have upped his wages in Jan 11 to be on parity with Arteta’s is unfair. From memory we didn’t sell Arteta at the same time, we sold him seven months later on 31st August 2011, so the balancing act you’re suggesting on wages wouldn’t have been possible. Let’s say we never sold either of them? Now we’d have them both on top wages, which would probably mean we couldn’t sign Jelavic… or maybe Gibson… or Naismith - or ironically had we not sold Arteta we probably couldn’t get Pienaar back now? So in essence they did exactly what you’re suggesting they should have done in the first place – i.e. using Arteta’s wages to pay to keep Pienaar…..?
What do we do when the next player like Pienaar demands to be put on parity with a top earner any way? Concede? And then either get into more debt or hope / expect to sell our best player seven months later (Baines for instance) to cover it?
It’s easy to point the finger at Moyes and BK now with the benefit of hindsight but you have to temper that with historical perspective. They’d left themselves no choice but to sell in Jan 2011, or let him go for a free which would’ve cost us even more money. Their error was not selling him sooner. However, had they done that he’d probably have an even higher price tag than he does now so that Spurs could recoup their money and would then be out of reach for us completely - who knows?
I slated Pienaar in the build up to him leaving and him actually going, but in the here and now he’s a player we need at price we can afford and sometimes you have to roll with the cards you’re dealt with and accept that you win some, you lose some. Ultimately, the only reason it’s cost us money is Pienaar engineering the best deal for himself, which I imagine is exactly what he’s doing right now hence the delay.
The fact that we’re skint also means we’re open to this kind of abuse, to be honest it’s a minor miracle Moyes keeps us from being raped left, right and centre by other clubs, players and their agents given the state we’re in.
