The Rumour Mill

City could move for Rodwell

11/08/2012 | Comments (162)
At one time a hotly-tipped target of Manchester United, Jack Rodwell is now being eyed by their neighbours City if you believe Sky Sports.

Roberto Mancini is apparently frustrated with the lack of transfer activity at the Etihad this summer and could make an offer for the England international before this month's deadline.

Not sure how I feel about him possibly going. He was our great hope for a while, but injury seemed to halt his progress. I guess if someone comes in with £12-15M plus we will sell, as we cant afford to wait to see if he becomes a great. We certainly could strengthen the areas we need with £15M! Like a right-sided midfielder. Even saying that, shame we might not see the best of him in royal blue.

£6 million and I would sell. No-one in their right mind would pay £10 million never mind £20 million for him. Just take what we can get because unfortunately our Jack isn't going to be the player he should be, or we thought he would be.

Think we would be very lucky to get £15mill, and I don't think there is any hope of Adam Johnson wages simply to high for us.

What about SWP on loan still got to be better than what we have got on the right hand side....

I think Mancini is doing this as a trade deal with either SWP or Adam Johnson, as he needs to offload players before buying any.

Might put us in luck for a change, Adam Johnson plus 5-10 million would be a very decent deal, and we are not playing Rodwell in defence so they need him more then we do.

I hope.

So thats why Moyesy was at the Etihad the other day?! ; ) And SWP? Doubt it Ian #786, he's a QPR these days! Haha.

I really don't think Moyesy would want to sell Rodwell but me personally I would if they threw Johnson into the deal and he settled for taking reasonable wages?!

He maybe not worth £20 mill on current form, but this is City, take em to the cleaners!

People kidding themselves about what we'd get for Rodwell he's a massive gamble.

The "promising big lad" stage has come and gone and he's come to a dead stop arguably gone backwards.

Injury worries, timid and the fact everyone knows we're brassic means we'd be lucky to see 5 mill - then again it is City - hope springs eternal.

Could be a good deal for Everton. Consider his age and the fact he is back in the full England squad and you have to believe that a team like City would pay £15 million. If he is a player who tends to get injured a lot, then Everton may consider the right offer and they will have some good money to play with.

The Blues did quite well when he was missing last season and so I don't think he would be missed, having not quite scaled the heights at Goodison as was expected.

No way this is happening. Mancini is given money to buy top players, players with exceptional talent, or well established stars. Rodwell is none of them. Talented, yes, but not proven star material. Yet.

So why should Mancini want to buy Rodwell? His last season was ok, nothing more.

Would anyone of you want to buy Rodwell, when you can pick from the top shelf?
Seriously?

I read this and thought to myself... You know what he would make a great replacement for Gareth Barry, learn from him this season then full-blown replacement next...

I hate Rodwell; let's just put it out there... I can't stand the kid, I mean he's meant to be a holding midfielder but he always runs up and blasts it over, mainly because he can't learn from an actual CDM at Everton. There's no-one guiding how to play there (apart from Neville).

We'll get £10 mil and run for the hills.

Keep Rodwell. Only thing's held him back is injury.

Haven't heard anything further on his hamstrings. Must be healthy if he's been called back into England's squad.

Besides, reading the OP, it's the same article been out about so many players City is in for. Just replaced all the other names with "Rodwell". Give me a reason to believe this one.

Funny, not a peep out of Mancini all the years he's been at City. Now he's finally won the League, he's Mr. Big Talk. Repeating pressure getting to you Roberto?

Don't think much'll come of it, City don't seem to be able to sign anyone (or get rid of anyone either - and you think we were frustrated with the Pienaar/Yobo sagas, imagine it's Van Persie/Tevez or Hazard/Adeabyor, etc, etc that are failing to come/go.

If there was any chance though and the money was even close to the £10M mark (a sane mid-level between different quotes) I think we should snap their hands off. Rodwell has shown signs of greatness but only very fleeting, in truth he's proved far more likely to be an injury risk than a match winner so far and my gut feeling is that it's just not going to happen for him with us.

If we had larger resources then of course we'd keep 50/50 youth prospects on (as well as old warhorses who could be impact subs!), the truth is we absolutely don't. We need to keep the playing setup (comparatively) lean, to sell before we can buy and to make each space count. Right now, Rodwell is 100% dispensable in terms of position and form/importance to the team (as opposed to say Baines, Pienaar, Heitinga, Felliani, Jelavic, etc) and if we can get some cash in from him to invest in strengthening on the right-hand side or providing striker cover it seems like a perfect deal.

To be honest it'll probably be best for Jack too - fresh start and maybe a different playing style more suited to bringing the best out of him (as it seemed the England setup was promising to).

What's best for Jack is to stay healthy and play for us.

Rodwell was the great hope not so long back - a few injuries and he's being written off. He's got more potential then any Englishman I can think of and that includes the Man Utd and Arsenal midgets that regularly get talked up.

Aged 21, 6ft 2in, quick, athletic, strong, can hit shots with either foot, and with 85 senior appearances plus England caps at every level. I'm not surprised other clubs would love to take him.

Mike Allison
843 Posted 12/08/2012 at 09:57:03
Talk of 5 or 6 million is ridiculous and appears to show no understanding at all of economics and basic supply and demand. He's our player, we don't want to sell, therefore it would take a far bigger bid than that to buy him.

Anyone willing to give away our promising young players for as little as that needs to have a serious word with themselves. I know opinion is divided but he's still very young and just been called up again into the full England squad, this all adds to our bargaining position.

Also, as an Everton lad, I doubt he's agitating for a move, and although rumour has it he's not the sharpest tool in the box I'm sure everyone realises he's going to get a lot more first team football, and therefore progress as a player, at Everton.

If you don't rate him, fair enough, everyone has their opinion and he can be quite frustrating, but if you would seriously sell one of our potentially biggest assets for £6M its going to be hard to take anything you say seriously about any subject.

Also, this is clearly a journalists slow day, 2 +2 = 5 kind of story. Mancini moans about signings, Rodwell gets called up for England, perfect recipe for a transfer rumour. I have no inside knowledge, but I'd reckon they don't want him, he doesn't want to go and we don't want to sell him.

Michael Stanley
845 Posted 12/08/2012 at 10:01:38
Rodwell may yet turn out to be an outstanding player but, as yet, I haven't seen it enough. He is very good in patches but rarely influences a game from start to finish. I wouldn't want us to sell him just to appease the banks, but this could be our best chance yet of getting Adam Johnson, a player we know that DM has been trying to get hold of for years. Johnson would give us a real threat down our right flank and take some of the pressure and predictability away from Baines and Pienaar on the left. On balance, Johnson might be a better asset for the overall balance of our squad at this moment in time.

If City are after "£23m rated" Daniel Agger, then Jack is worth £20m no worries.

He did look good when he played for England that one time before the injury and it's a shame that he does do that for us.

Chris, can I add Franny Jeffers to that list!
I say put a price on Jack £15 to £20m (considering the Joe allen, Phil Jones and Jordan Henderson fees) and stick to it. If no-one pays then great, we keep a potentially good player. If someone coughs up then spend it where it is needed (we all know where) and we have cover with Fellaini Gibson, maybe Pienaar and that Junior lad for centre mid. It's a win win for me.

I would be happy to see rodwell leave. Very injury prone and has been in and out of the team when is fit due to his form. Any bid over £10m should be creatfully received as long as the money is used to bolster the small squad we have. Anichebe and coleman can go to

Paucity of news? Poor City! that's it poor city haven't signed a player, how about Van Persie?-done to death boss

Jack Wilshere then?-unlikely boss

Tevez?-he already plays for them boss

Oh ermmmm Mo Farrah, he's been in the news lately-he's quick boss, but slightly the wrong sport

Well how about that footballer that was couldn't make Team GB because of injury, whatshisname? John Roodwell-Jack Rodwell boss, he plays for Everton when he's not in the treatment room, slight goer 'cos Everton are skint and city have got money coming out of their ears

That's it! that's our story, Rodwell to City for an undisclosed fee-If you say so boss

Probably with Kenwright in charge over the next season or two we will be forced to sell at least one player for good money. I would rather see Rodwell sold for 5-7m than Baines, Felliani, Jageilka or Jelavic at 10m upwards.

Rodwell is unlikely to be first choice when everyone is fit consistently gets great reviews based on potential but has failed to have 5 mom type performances on the bounce at anytime in a Everton shirt.

If Rodwell has another poor season in which injuries have played a part then his value will continue to fall. We would all love Rodwell to produce but his big plus points are being English, athletic and his size and engine with his footballing ability- passing, tackling, shooting, ball control, skill to go past players and reading of the game all being slightly above average with huge improvements needed in order to be considered a top class player.

Tony McNulty

So what is this?

(1) A reporter under pressure from his editor to write shite?
(2) An attempt by one club to plant a story and unsettle another club's player?
(3) An agent after a fee?
(4) Someone mischief-making so as to try and unsettle our preparations for the new season?
(5) A "trial balloon" to test a reaction and see if a player might be available and at what sort of price?

There are other possibilities. Take your pick.

I personally think Rodwell has great potential yet to be realised and would be very sad if he left ... unless the hamstrings are shot and he's finished in which case get the maximum fee you can. SInce it's City, we are talking Lescott numbers.

Phil Sammon 862: Jack - of all types of football trades - but master of, ( or so it seems on what I have seen over the last few years ) - none Rodwell.

This isn't having a go, it's having a considered look over a few years. I'm not saying he's a bad player, just average and thus not irreplacable...and if City or who ever want to give us silly money, well keep stacking it on the table until you get fed up.

Without gettting into a Life of Brian - what have the Romans ever done for us, just what does he bring to the team?? Apart from being Young and Big, but somewhat of a gentle giant and not much 'mongrel' in him. Go on then... apart from potential ( soon to be in the un-fulfilled catagory ) what has he ever done for us??

Paul.. or anybody...List all the attributes, in the best possible world, you want out of a Midfielder and mark him out of 10...you won't get many below 6, but also you won't get many over 7!

I'll start you off...10+ goals a season? Nah! not unless he suddenly turns into a Cahill clone.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

QED.

Well got to say I'm completely shocked by this. I thought it had bullshit written all over it when the story broke yesterday. I'd imagine we've got between £12-15m for him - what do you think?

A real shame that Jack never fulfilled his true potential with us. I wish him well and if he can maintain some fitness and develop some confidence I'm sure he'll go on to make a great player. Id have liked it to be with us but too much of a risk for us not to take the money and, of or saleable payers, he's the one I'd rather let go.

This could be good for Barkley he should get more chances now and it seems maybe Moyes has confidence in the junior kid who we got from City for fuck all.

Would City have been after Rodwell if he wasn't English? If Moyes gets the money this can be used to strengthen in other areas.

I'll be genuinely sad to see him go. He has bags of potential and if he can get over his injury problems I have no doubt he will go on to become one of the best English midfielders in the league. He also seems to be a really grounded kid.

That said, every player has his price and City usually pay top dollar. In Osman, Gibson, Fellaini, Pienaar and potentially Junior, we have plenty of options in centre-mid. Dare I say it Neville and Heitinga can also fill in and do a job if we are short.

In the wide areas there is only really Pienaar that I have 100% confidence in. Naismith has looked promising but it's early days. So if we can re-invest this some of this money and bring in a proven wide midfielder and have enough left to bring in some quality back up for Jelly even on loan then I'll be okay with this sale.

Best of luck Jack.

If he can get a game at City, he may blossom but, then again, he could just be a very expensive "loan" signing
Looking at the average players Liverpool have bought for £15 million upwards, it's a pity they didn't get involved - theyd've probably paid double
Still - it''ll pay the police bill and defer the banks "killing us", to paraphrase our chairman

Paul: the key word in that sentence is "IF" lets face is if it is 15 mil, 10 mil will go to the bank and maybe 5 mil to moyes

it just feels like we've spent 5 years getting depth in our squad then destroyed it all in 1 month

Im a big fan of Rodwell, got his name on the back of my shirt but lets all be honest he has got a hamstring problem. I cant remember when he played 5 games in a row for us?
If we do get £15m with add ons it should be a fair price. We cant afford to have a player who, if he keeps fit could be an amazing midfielder or someone who 3 years down the line is worth very little due to injury issues?
Yes Ill be sad to see him go but in footall their is no sentimate its just business.

913 Posted 12/08/2012 at 13:18:20
Chris...The bank won't get 10 million. We decreased wages impressively, and with our cup run, our finances won't necessitate selling. We brought in Pienarr, after only selling Cahill, and have since sold Yobo, which suggests our financial position is better than previous seasons.

If the fee is 15million, then Moyes will get at least 10 to spend. If a loan deal for Jonhson is tagged on, then this might be the best bit of business of the summer. Why do you want depth in the central midfield Chris? when we clearly need to spend elsewhere. We have Gibson and Fellaini who can play centrally, as well as Osman in an attacking sense, and Neville in a more defensive position, and we've got the Portugese youngster and Barkley coming through. Central midfield is one the position we can afford to lose players in.

And feeder club? what do you expect. We are the seventh best team in the league, with the worse finances in the league, of course we are going to struggle to resist offers. Even Arsenal, the fourth/third best team in the league are a feeder club, if you want to look at it like that. But we haven't sold Heitinga, Fellaini, Baines or Jelavic..we've sold our overrated central midfielder, probaly for an excessive amount, which will allow us to fend off offers for others and strengthen our first eleven. And we've hadnt had to go through a morale damaging transfer episode, like we did with Lescott.

If Andy Johnson doesnt come in, then I expect Matt Phillips will. I wouldn't be surprised if we were the club who 'tapped him up', because we would have been aware of this deal for a little while.

Andy Crooks, I heard a few things being said about Ross, and I had no reason not to believe them. Last night Fellaini and Gibson were out and he still didnt start or play more than 15 mins.. There must be something else going on with him
Phil Sammon - Thanks !

Rodwell, if its more than £10m with a loan thrown in, its got to be good for all involved. He will hardly get a game though whilst YaYa Toure is there.

Chris

That's absurd mate. We've just sold a fringe player for £15 mil.

Rodwell needs games to fulfill his potential. He wasn't getting that at Everton - will he at City?!

The major supeuse for me is that just last week Rodwell was given the number 8 for Everton. This sale was clearly a very swift one

Neil Pickering
918 Posted 12/08/2012 at 13:30:29
We should be made up with this. If its 20mil then its the sale of the century. This lad is never going to be the player we need, so at worst if it means we keep feli and baines then thats a result for me. Am actually made up, and I reckon we might get the player (right midfielder) we really need before the start of the sason.

Get in!

With regard to the purchase price of Downing, Henderson and Allen what, re Rodwell, do you consider to be "an excessive amount"?

Now, that should be an interesting answer

Great bit of business for the club - just a shame the manager will not see all of the transfer fee to re-invest.

If Moyes can bring in a quality £10m midfielder in as a replacement, I can only see us improving.

Rodwell was still in the " potential " category for me, and we are desperate to replace Cahill's goal contributions from midfield.

Great bit of business this, and if the 20 million pound being touted is true, even more so. I think that Francisco Junior's emergence may have a lot to do with Moyes being willing to sanction this tbh. Superior, younger player in the same position as Rodwell - no brainer. The irony is that we nabbed Junior for a song from . . . Citeh :)

Now if we manage to get Landycakes or similar in on the right and another striker, this may be the best bit of business this summer!!!

I hope not Peter Bradshaw, they're three of the most uninspiring signings ever. If Moyes sees any of the money it better not be used to buy journeymen utility players that will be the stickerplasters for this squad. None of those three are good enough.

We need to be targeting players like Dembele or Dempsey at Fulham, McCarthy and Moses at Wigan, Lallana at Southampton, Maybe the likes of N'Zonzi and Hanley at Blackburn, Jordan Rhodes, Gary Hooper, Matt Philips-young players with quality that we could afford. Maybe some of the cash strapped Malaga players who Moyes will have seen first hand, or look to the French league for value for money like Newcastle have done, even some of the Montpellier players like Belhanda. Not tired Prem League also rans like Doyle or Adam. As for taking some loan players from City to flesh out the squad, if Johnson is a non runner then perhaps Boyata for defensive cover, and Santa Cruz or Guidietti up front?

Santa Cruz isn't brilliant I'll agree Phil, but we could do with a few more options up front and he could be a decent loan signing for a season, stick on the bench. But this Guidietti is apparently a great prospect so could be better. It's all irrelevant as we probably won't bring anyone in at all.
Mark Riding
963 Posted 12/08/2012 at 14:37:00
Phil, I see Paul #882 has heard similar by the looks of it, the tattoos comment was a bit daft, typed straight after watching the game, but nothing any young player does anymore surprises me, and you only have to read the Rooney comments on here last week, to realise these lads are millionaires and may well just get a up themselves on occasion.. ( I have been called much worse on here by the way )
David Nicholls
964 Posted 12/08/2012 at 14:31:52
I wonder if we will bid for Donovan? At his age he cannot surely command a huge fee. I know ideally we would want someone younger to fill the wide area but if we do look elsewhere there is always the risk that it may not come off i.e. - Bliyaletdinov. He may only have a couple of years at the top of his game but we know he fits perfectly into the team in a position we have struggled with in the past.
A younger cheaper option on the right could be David Bentley. A bit of a knob but I always thought he had alot of ability. I think Spurs would let him go cheaply, he can't have many years left on his contract and he had a bad knee injury last year while on loan. May be worth a punt?
Bobby Thomas
965 Posted 12/08/2012 at 14:22:50
Mark, we had about 13 mortgages on Goodison at one point didnt we?!

The way its been the last year or so I have been half expecting a sale and if this is the way to square off a bit of debt and Moyes can get 2 in where we need it, right side and legit cover up top, this is the best way.

Pace, we are desperate for pace. I wouldnt expect anything too earth shattering we will be fishing in something like the £3-6 million Championship pool.

Moyes knows he needs a striker as he was sniffing around Rodellega and although he wouldnt be earth shattering Moyes has shown interest in Doyle before, is quick, can do lone striker, knows the division and can get 10-12 league. Id be ok with him but could understand people being underehelmed.

You don't get much for £5 million or so usually these days, the Jelavic deal was a freak.

The money or some of it has to be spent on somebody who can play on the right. He doesn't have to be a world beater or do the hundred metres in 11 seconds. He just has to be someone who knows how to play on the right and balance the team out. We've got nothing on that side.

Jim Knightley

Eric, do you think we would have brought Pienaar, if we had to pay £24mil without any funds? That's what the Sky money is for.

Our wages have decreased massively over the last two seasons. Be interesting, albeit probably impossible because of hidden figures, to see our wage savings. I'd say it's at less £5million a season.

I really expect us to sign Matt Phillips, and a striker. Spurs won't sell Defoe because they have no strikers and I expect we will probably buy from the champ or abroad.

Has Rhodes gone? We need a creative player in on loan as well, as we are fucked when Pienaar gets injured. Yobo, Cahill and Rodwell out is pretty good going in my book, as I think they are all players we could afford to lose.

If we were smart we would go straight to Fulham and give them 10 million for Dempsey. He would greatly improve our midfield as well as front line with Jelavic. He's good with the ball at his feet, good in front of goal, and good with his head. He's a competitive son of a bitch and in the prime of his career. He's the player the American press is more excited about, not Donovan. And we'd pull the rug out from under the shite's feet for once. In a fantasy world where I get to make the decisions, that's what I would be doing right this second.
Rory Slingo
024 Posted 12/08/2012 at 14:13:27
Charlie Adam? O'Shea? Owen? I'd rather all the money went to the banks!

We can finish Top 8 with the current squad. What's two places in the league worth, £1m? Coz best case scenario that's as high as we'll end up with those kinds of names coming in. What's the point of spending £12m to recoup £1m? Plus we'd qualify for Europa which would make the depth of our squad a much larger problem while earning us fuck all like the previous times we were in it. Meanwhile, we wouldn't have reduced any debt. Let's get those interest payments down while we can and hopefully attract a buyer coz when we run out of players to sell and we're still left owing £40m+ at prime rates, we're screwed.

Jim Harrison

David. Your BARKing mad! (sorry) £10 million for Dempsey? Hes 29, better to usethe money on a couple of younger players.

Sorry to see Jack go, I was hoping this would be his season to come good for us, but If its £15 million plus add ons I think its great business. He may go on to be a great player, but it's doubtful City will see any profit when it comes to move him on. And if Moyes can do his usual transfer magic we will be ok. And at least the bank will get their money early this year.

James Morgan

From what Greg O'Keeffe as said in tonight's (or whenever's) Echo, were getting £15m upfront, plus add ons and that Moyesy will get some of the £15m to re-invest, not all.

So ya can bet £5m will go to wherever to make up the £5m deficit we have every year according to Elstone and £10m will go towards team building.

I wouldn't believe all the things you hear on twitter as some "ITK's" are saying we could get Santa Cruz on loan as part of the deal, and the same one going by the name of @EvertonITK says a deal for Adam Johnson is on, £7m rising to £10m. He also says were signing Katidis, a young Greek lad we've had on trial this year. Thing is, this @EvertonITK as been right on a few Everton transfer fronts, so who knows, but I won't believe a thing till it's announced on the OS!

And just another thing, Greg O'Keeffe said Heitinga could even go before the close of the window as he's looking at his options but will only be allowed to leave if Everton can get in a replacement?!.

So, in the great words of Mrs Kenwright, watch this space! :D

Forgive me if i've missed this already, as there are too many comments on here to go through, but the ones I have read have called for a striker, midfielder and even left back cover!!! The most glaring weakness in our side is the right back position.

Maybe we could bring in Alan Hutton who at 27 is nearing his peak, and would be a mirror image of Baines on the right, giving us an alternative route to goal than the one that other sides work so hard to shut down.

A specialist winger would be ideal to finish the jigsaw off, as I see our side as the strongest since DM took over. True we are a smallish squad, but with youngsters like Barkley, Duffy and Bidwell, all they need is some match time (maybe league cup ties) and this season could be a decent one.
