What's all this about Owen?

13/08/2012 | Comments (76)
The internet has been buzzing with suggestions that Everton are signing Michael Owen, based on seemingly nothing more than Twitter speculation and betting numbers.

A couple of supposedly "in the know" agents on Twitter and another account devoted to Manchester United news were all claiming late last night that Owen's move to Goodison was 100% done... not long before the most adamant of them promptly went dark altogether after he was challenged on that story and a couple of others involving Ramirez to Liverpool, and Van Perse to United.

Local media sources remain skeptical at Everton are interested in Owen but with numbers short in the senior squad, some sort of pay-as-you-play deal for the 32-year-old would not be all that of a surprise if it came about.

I know what the Kenwright announcement will be today.

We have gone and signed Michael Owen, also check the transfer odds with sky. It is at 1/5 to join us.

It's happening!

Stuart.
You could be right but in the past, bookies stopped taking bets on Moyes to become Villa manager at one point, and was long odds on to become Spurs manager for a while, neither happened.

The Owen information came from a few football agents.

Odds cut dramatically and as far as I know it will be announced later today.

Maybe look out for a Tweet from Michael Owen himself.

Personally I would rather see Hallam Hope getting a few games, but we do need to get some players into this paper thin squad.

Fellaini and Gibson both doubts for Man Utd game also. Neville in CM does not fill me with Joy.

Sunderland 20/1

Oh and the Owen possible transfer...

I stopped watching Deadliest catch as it's season over for catching crabs in the Bering Sea! Even Sig Hansen et al have their limits!

Owen has enough money as it is without coming to EFC and draining the resources surely prompting the RS to laugh in their sleeves!! He's finished and we are just not big enough for someone like him to want to play for.

Kevin Day

Owen should not even be spoke about in the same breath as our Club, let alone pay him any money!
Duncan McDine
416 Posted 13/08/2012 at 12:49:29
Seems like most of the Owen talk originated in a talksport interview with Sharpie. The fact he's still heavily involved with Everton means it could happen. Imagine he'd be on a one year contract purely as backup.

Not sure what I'd make of him, but we defo need cover for Jela. Just hope this doesn't mean our right winger hopes will result in yet another underperforming loan on deadline day.

Would Moyes really take a risk, and an expensive one at that, on Owen? I don't think he'd do it - it doesn't make sense unless it's pay-as-you-play, and Owen seems to be a little deluded over his value if stories of his demands are to be believed.

Stuart, you may well be right, but as for the odds..
You do know its Michael Owen, the gambling, horse racing nut who will have connections all over the show ?
He would see 2/9 as a good price if it was nailed on cert.. keep updating the odds and when it goes 1/50 the deal is done.

I also think that Owen would rather retire than play his way back in somewhere, even his boyhood club. He doesn't seem to have the required desire or inclination.
Gareth Fieldstead
454 Posted 13/08/2012 at 14:34:12
So we sign Owen on a pay as you play and Johnson on loan. The bank gets all the Rodwell fee and we still have a debt of over 40 million despite sales of Bellefield, Yakubu, Peinnar, Arteta, Rodwell and Beckford plus trimming the wage bill of at least 200,000 a week. Yet if we question why we are classed as disloyal and not true blues. I remain convinced Moyes will not see a penny of that money. Disgraceful
Mark Riding
455 Posted 13/08/2012 at 14:45:06
Gareth, you forgot Cahill. If pushed, I think most Evertonians would have taken a player swop with regards Rodwell, as like you say, Moyes may not get a penny.

Someone posted on here last week that we paid off a load of loans at once? So is this season's debt serviced already?

No wait a minute........Pip has just announced that we don't need any midfielders to replace Rodwell........that must be it!! So glad we all got excited about that!

What a load of Bollocks!!

Once again with a week to go before the first game Evertonians are left feeling really glum about the season ahead and grasping a straws..............one day Jeremy Beaddle is going to jump out of his grave and say "You're on TV its all a been a big joke!!! Everton are actually top of the league and have bloody millions!!!"

David Barks
472 Posted 13/08/2012 at 15:43:00
Steve,
That's not actually what he said, surprise surprise. He said he believes we are still strong in central midfield, with Barkley and Francisco stepping up, along with Fellaini, Gibson and Osman. He simply pointed out that Rodwell hadn't played for 6 months, and we performed quite well. So not sure where you got Neville saying we don't need any new midfielders, I guess you added 2 + 2 and got 0.
Steve King
475 Posted 13/08/2012 at 15:49:46
David,

Please don't mistake me for one of the Everton bashing TW regulars that finds negativity in everything. I am not one of them!
However Pip said: "We are quite strong in central midfield - bearing in mind that Jack hadn't played for the last six months - so I'm sure we can cope with that."
That suggests to me he isn't expecting reinforcements.

I hope I'm wrong!!

Phil Rodgers
476 Posted 13/08/2012 at 15:52:44
I would take Owen. Our squad is painfully thin. A serious injury to key players could make this a very difficult season. I think we need at least 4 players. Ain't gonna happen is it?
Steve King
477 Posted 13/08/2012 at 15:59:34
Don't you ever just think............."For fucks sake what have I done to deserve this?"

I think I posted that the Rodwell - Fellaini partnership in midfield could be an exciting prospect with both players fit about 24hrs before we sold him.

However I shall take my bollocking (and my lesson in Maths) and get on with supporting the grand old team.............new signings or not!!

Phil Davies
480 Posted 13/08/2012 at 15:58:39
Steve,
It suggests he's not expecting reinforcements in central midfield, and I agree, we don't need another central midfielder.

We need a winger that is already the finished article, it's no good getting a young 20 year old who still needs to work on his game as we haven't got any body to teach them how to play, Jakub Błaszczykowski from Dortmund would be my ideal right winger.

James Newcombe

If Owen was to join I wouldn't be jumping from the rooftop's but I wouldn't be heading into the garage with a hosepipe either. As a sub for last 20 mins or as a back up striker I think he could do a job. I'd rather him than Straq which was what we had last season. If I could choose i'd go for Mckay-Steven at Dundee Utd. Good on the ball, vision, has a few tricks up his sleeve and a good age.

If we sign Owen then I want a refund on my season ticket, backup or not. I will not want to pay for him to sit in the treatment room just because they will be less busy with the likes of Saha and Rodwell gone, end of.

We have money now, even if it's only £5M or so... I would much prefer to take a punt on someone than have an ex-RedShite and ex-Manc on the books.

Spot on Kevin Day!

I have heard from a journo that Everton are not interested in Owen after the Talksport bollocks a while ago. However, the Skybet odds are alarming. You can only hope they have got it wrong like the Moyes to Spurs was 'definite' according to some people, but never even got to first base in the end.

By the way, Kevin, are you doing MotD2 again this season?

Jim Lloyd
544 Posted 13/08/2012 at 18:09:37
Steve - Fair enough, though most Evertonians love the club but many just don't like how its being run. As for any incoming players, if its true about Owen, IF, then Moyes must think he could do a job. I'm sure that IF there's anything in it, the contract will reflect his poor fitness over the years. I'm much more hopeful that we'll go for Dempsey, whose not only a goal scorer, he'll battle for the team as well. If we got him; and Johnson on loan, I'd say that was a good Summer transfer session but I'm prone to dreaming!

I don't know why there is all this hype about Kenwright... people always give him stick. He promised last season that there was money to get new players, and we got Jelavic and Gibson. We sold Arteta at the last second of the transfer window, because he wanted to go. Jack wanted to go... Rooney wanted to go.. I can go on and on...

Do you enjoy winding people up?

Gareth Fieldstead
578 Posted 13/08/2012 at 20:45:04
Time will tell Jason. Going by our recent history I personally think it has gone to pay our loans or the 24 million that nobody can explain. We may get Johnson but the fact it was not part of the Rodwell sale suggests his salary would be a stumbling block. I think it will depend on the start we have. Poor again and Kenwright will reluctantly part with 4 to 6 million, improved and it goes to the banks.

Everton are being held to ransom by the chairman and board of directors, who won't put their hands in their pockets and give Moyes the money he needs to strengthen the squad nor will the board sell Everton for a nominal amount to encourage and entice new owners who would give Moyes the money. For those reasons, Everton were forced to sell Rodwell, at a time when Fellaini and Gibson maybe spending some time in the treatment room.

• After speculation that Michael Owen is set for a return to Merseyside with Everton we are now seeing money for another former Anfield man, Emile Heskey, to join the Toffees. We are into 5/1 from 16/1 this morning. Leicester remain favourites to sign the striker at 5/4.
by Sky Bet 1:08 PM

Lets be serious, who would bet on that?!?

Robert Pierpoint
763 Posted 14/08/2012 at 14:04:18
In regards to Owen, I am amazed at the perceived negativity around a possible signing. I am sure that there would not be too much of an outlay in terms of money. Of course the deal would be highly incentive based. No club in the premier league would offer anything different.

Although he has had one serious injury and a couple of resulting niggles whilst at United, should he stay injury free, he will be a more than useful second option for Everton. Remember, we are talking of a 32 year old and not a 35 year old here. Which other striker could we get for nothing who has the ability to score 10+ goals in the league?

Any transfer can be seen as a gamble, in Owen's case then it is fitness that is the punt, for Jelavic it was the fact that he had never played at this level (same with Naismith). There are clear benefits to a 1-2 year deal for Owen:

Everton's 'success' under Moyes has been built on team ethic and mentality. Owen would not rock the boat, would fit in to the squad and would accept a role as a squad player. Although a cliche, he would be someone for other players to learn from. At his best, there was no greater goal scorer than Owen and his ability would surely be of benefit to Vellios, Anichebe etc.

When Owen burst in to the scene expectation was only rivalled by that of Rooney in 2004, experiences of dealing with such pressures may become increasingly important in regards to Barkley. There was a reason that Ferguson kept Owen for three years at United, not only can he have an impact on the pitch but also an equal if not greater effect off it at Finch Farm.

Its probably because the word Heskey appeared on this site - they're rumor calculating computer decided with a ping that they should reduce the odds based on fansite speculation.

It's really buggered my chances this transfer window. I wouldn't have charged a signing on fee. I even have my own boots. And I'm only thirty eight too. And my wife isn't the Wag type either.
