Adam Johnson coming in on loan?

13/08/2012 | Comments (72)
Metro claims that Everton are set to beat city rivals Liverpool to the signing of Manchester City winger Adam Johnson. The 25-year-old England international has been granted permission to leave on loan in a bid to rejuvenate his career, after falling down the pecking order at the Etihad.

Should have been a straight swap for Adam Johnson + the £5 mil in add on's (which we'll probably never get )

Apparently we are favourite to sign Adam Johnson on skybet:

Adam Johnson to sign for in Summer 2012 Transfer Window:

Everton 1/1
Liverpool 9/4
Tottenham 6/1

Sunderland 11/1
Aston Villa 14/1
QPR 20/1
Stoke 20/1
Fulham 50/1
Lille 50/1
West Ham 50/1

Is this the same Skybet that had Moyes odds on for the Spurs job?

Well its certainly interesting to read, even if not total proof we are going to sign him.

Also heard that Jags and Adam Johnson have hardly left each others side at England training. Read into that what you will.

Are skybet offering odds on Everton being linked with every player currently having a bit of a rocky relationship with his club now they think we have a few quid in our pockets

No just small odds on realistic transfer options and based on connections to people in the know.

It looks like we're after a few from City.

"Everton are hopeful that Johnson will not be the only City player arriving on loan, with Moyes also eyeing deals for striker John Guidetti and defender Dedryck Boyata."

Jamie Barlow, where did you get that from?
Jay Harris
429 Posted 13/08/2012 at 13:18:43
I heard that talks were held about Adam Johnson but we could not meet his wage demands.

I also heard that Dempsey had been in talks with the club.

Whether true or not or whether they will not mature into deals I would not like to say but they would address the balance of our team so here is hoping.

Now the Johnson stuff may be crap, and I may not have my facts exactly right here. But …

If we really do want City players, anyone acting professionally would have included our demands as part of the Rodwell negotiations.

This wouldn’t exactly be exactly rocket salad, or, to cite John Cleese, a pictorial proposition by Ludwig Wittgenstein.

It says a great deal that I always now sniff incompetence whenever we are in negotiations. Oh for the days of John Moores and how we used to handle transfers.

Andrew Ellams

If Jamie Barlow's post about loaning the 3 City players happens, how would people feel about writing off the £5million add on fees from Rodwells transfer as loan fees?

We need to sign players of this class and not just on loan. What would be the point of loaning 3 city players for them to shine and then we can't afford them. Would much rather we signed 1 then loan 3.

Tony, what are we going to "demand" from City in relation to Adam Johnson?

Hi Brian Marwood? Yeah Bobby Elstone here. I demand you pay 50% of Johnsons wages for the season or were pulling the plug on the loan deal!!

Yeah, we drive a real hard bargin. Would love it to happen but I aint even considering it.

Clubs who arent complete piss takers may wanna loan him and, gasp, even pay him the going rate!

There is no way we are getting Adam Johnson, he is going to sign for the Shite. I have heard we are getting Phillips from Blackpool and also linked with John O'Shea...

Moyes will have someone lined up. It will most probably be some one we have not been linked with. How many off us knew Rodwell was in talks with City for the last two weeks?!?!

Why a loan ? Kevin is spot on about the service Jelavic would be recieving from both sides, especially if Naismith is playing just behind him ( christ, getting excited now ) but I hope we get a chance to buy after the loan is up though. At least he wouldnt be cup-tied like Pienaar was I suppose..

Man City are under a little pressure to clear their books, so perhaps we can get Johnson for money which isn't silly. I'd love Santa Cruz too to be fair...

Adam Johnson needs to playing regular club football to have any realistic chance of breaking into and cementing a place in Hodgson's England team in time to represent his county in the 2014 World Cup, assuming we qualify, and he knows that. A move to Everton would be good for him but for us to buy him outright he would have to agree to a massive pay cut. If Mancini is happy for him to go out on loan, thereby maintaining his current wage, he gets to have his cake AND eat it. What would you do in his position?

Incidentally, the bit about England also applies to Jack. By having his head well and truly turned by a ridiculous wage offer he may well have thrown his WC 2014 chances away because I can not see him starting for Mancini for some time.

City can't afford to get rid of Johnson. They need British players in their squad. The best we could hope for is a loan. We ain't gonna get anyone decent in before the market closes. Just tell us you're giving the money to the bank so we clear our heads and look forward to the start of the season.

Mark, I think Johnson recently penned a 5 yr deal so any fee is off the scale being English and capped etc.

They got him for a steal initially as well, about 7's I think. A mate of mine had been going on about getting him for months when it was looking like he was leaving Boro. He is exactly what we need. Great to watch as well.

Despite my cynicism regarding our cost cutting, the only way to get Johnson is as part of a bigger swap than the Rodders deal, or a loan.

I think he can bring in a few players this is the man who has constantly bought cheap players and turned them in to gold! No reason why he won't this time! Think phillips might be a good start with lewis holby

Bobby, to be fair City are a bit of a laughing stock when it comes to players contracts.

They are still paying Santa Cruz a reported 80k a week and a spurs mate of mine told me they offereded to pay 60k/week of Abebayor's wages to get him sold to Spurs, Spurs would pay him 110k/week (their max) so that he wouldn't have to take a pay cut on his current 170k week! He apparently doesnt want to take the deal though as he doesnt want a 60k/week pay cut in two years time (spurs would offer him a 4 year deal but he only has 2 years left on his city deal)).

I think we could get Johnson in with City still paying some of his reported 80k/week wages.

I suspect in Johnson is going to be brought in on a loan deal that it would happen before the weekend given that we are facing Man United next Monday evening. If the deal has any legs at all then surely Mancini would be looking to arm Everton for the opener looking to dent United's chances early doors into the new campaign.

More chance of Michael Johnson signing from City.

Ian Bennett #550,
What happened with all the Holtby talk?

He's a good player and his old fells loves the Blues, now I know that mightn't carry much weight with the people who actually make the decisions to buy but to us fans loyalty, being a hard grafter, having a fair bit of skill and having a player come out and say that kind of stuff does mean something!
A perfect replacement for Rodwell, Young, and with the potential to be a loyal addition to the squad.

Regarding bookmaker's odds... generally speaking the odds change when people back them, not the other way round. And when you see odds of 1/5+, that's basically the bookie saying "I don't want to take any bets on this", especially when these markets are classed as 'novelty' where you're lucky to be able to place a bet over £25.

Skybet putting 1/5 on something happening means they've fulfilled their allocation on the 'book' for that selection. If betting trends turned and people backed 2nd 3rd in the book then the 1/5 would shorten, as Skybet want to make the price as tempting as possible. As a novelty market doesn't have much money in it, relatively small bets affect the odds offered by the bookmaker much more dramatically. 5 x £50 bets on a novelty selection could sway something from evens to 1/5. 5 x £50 bets on the 2nd favourite at the Grand National, obviously won't have any impact whatsoever as it is a drop in the ocean in relation to the book.

Johnson is the most skilful english player around he is the real deal.

He's at the wrong Manchester club, at Utd he'd be first name on the England sheet Mancini has shredded him at City.

If Moyes brought him here and got him playing to his true potential I'd go round and apologise - honest - offer to clean his car an' everything.

Likewise kevin.

I heard from a good source that when they were discussing Rodwell over the last 2 weeks Johnson had discussuions with Everton but could not agree wages.

I really wish the FA would prevent clubs like City and Chelsea offering ludicrous wages and signing up all the talent then not playing them.

Adam Johnson, Michael Johnson, Magic Johnson... Er, Kev Johnson

I used to play wide left - although, to be fair, that was a few years ago...

What are my salary expectations? How does £576.92 a week sound? £30,000 a year would do me fine. And for that I'd bring in some biscuits every Friday and share them around at elevenses.

David Gallant
605 Posted 13/08/2012 at 22:02:47
Johnson would be a brilliant signing, and could happen if we take him on loan with City paying half his 80k / w wages. If we could agree a future fee I think that would be a great deal. I would really like our interest in Lewis Holtby to materialise though, by all accounts he is a star in the making - more of a classic no. 10 than a winger, and he's a boyhood Evertonian so snap him up Moyesie.

If we brought those two in I'd be well chuffed.

Very nice team bonding tip there with the biscuits Kev.

One I feel Mojo himself would have been partial to, after a team bonding session on the ale and a nice smoke.

Remember when he had a black eye and tried to make out he had been playing with his daughter and was accidently butted by her wooden rocking horse?

Couple of tales from Evertons "legendary" early 90's pre/post season tours under Kendall in Mark Wards book are nuts. In fact just playing for Kendall in the early 90's sounds nuts!!

Johnson coming to EFC? It won't happen!

He'll be thinking about his wages, he'll be thinking about his eligibility to move on to another club after playing for EFC... he's basically thinking more like RS than EFC.

There's my hat... is this the ring?

Ha-ha! Hate it when that happens, Drew!

Seriously, though, finances aside, Adam J is absolutely not a Moyes type of player so I can't see it happening. He has a bit of a run and a dribble, adopts double the teapot position then trots around for a bit. He'd be deaf in one ear by the time Dour Davie had finished with him.

Apart from which, we've already had one AJ. (Yup, we forgot Andy Johnson!)

It is still 2 weeks before the transfer window shuts and we all know how frenetic it is during the last 24hours......a hell of a lot can happen...even in the last hour. If Adam Johnson is still at City in that last 24hours there is every chance that "if" moyes wants him then we could make a move for him. Johnson will hardly kick a ball at City and if he is ambitious enough and wants to play a part in the world cup qualifiers he better give his head a wobble, he will be probably be playing week in week out for us with a chance to shine. I think that before the window shuts we will lose maybe one more player.....hopefully big Vic to someone like Leicester and I think we will have one full time signing plus 2 loanees coming in.

Sam,

According to all press reports Arsenal, AC mIlan and similar clubs are after him on loan. Maybe he just has a loud mouth agent but if not and they are actualy after him I doubt we would have much hope of outbidding them, even for a loan signing

I think it would be hard for us to get Johnson due to his wages, but apparently we are sniffing after John Guidetti from Man City's reserve team. Too good for the reserves but not a first team regular, he was shipped out to Feyenoord last season where he scored 20 goals and became a cult figure for the fans. He's the type of signing I would love Moyes to make!

Talking of Johnsons, I suddenly recalled David Johnson, shipped out to Ipswich in exchange for Rod Belfit! Who did it? Was it Harry Catterick, or was Billy Bingham already in charge?
Jay Harris

David #831

Catterick was in charge until 1974 so it was him.

Here is a link to the contract letter between Everton and Ipswich for the exchange.

Rod Belfitt - ah, there's a blast from the past. He was rubbish. I think he was one of Catterick's but I might be wrong...

Yeah, David Johnson. Him with the muzzie!

Lyndon B Johnson was a Democrat so therefore "on the left" - he'd fit in nicely with his great-nephew Leighton, I reckon. Not sure we should go down that road, though. Otherwise, we'll be snapping up that little Italian fella to fill the vacancy on the right. What's his name? Oh yeah, Mussolini.

I must admit, I am a bit Johnson-centric. That girl who won the Taekwando gold medal - I was sure she was Jade Johnson! Turns out she's a Jones. Despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary, I just automatically think anyone who's any good is called Johnson.

Ray @ 840... Er, because that's my name - and I like to think of myself as part of a magnificent pantheon of eternal greats, that's why!

So (he said, contradicting what he'd said earlier), Adam Johnson - get him in. Also, counter-intuitively, Roger Johnson - who had a stinker last season for Wolves but was decent for Birmingham before that). Not Glen Johnson though, obviously...
