The Roswell fee is £12mil rising to £17m...how exactly have we been shafted? How much were you expecting, Ray and Noel? 20mil? For a player who has done nothing for two seasons. At least downing managed a good season before his move.

Fair enough with Pienaar, we know what we are getting with him, but the likes of Dempsey and Donovan, as good as they may be, will cost a decent fee, be on a decent wage and will be worth next to nothing in a couple of years, regardless of how well they do for us.

Let's get this elusive right sided player sorted first and at least balance what we have rather than throw ossie out there or hope Coleman re-captures some form!
At present i'm imaging the midfield v Utd will look something like Pienaar, Neville, Osman, Coleman with Naismith behind Jelavic? Not exactly a great midfield in my opinion?!?

"The Roswell fee is £12mil rising to £17m"
What's your source for that statement, please?
That's the highest "disclosed" figure I've heard bandied about (unless you're talking about flying saucers)

Don't people look on the Everton site before they come on here and spread stupid rumours. Another stupid rumour doing the rounds is the Adam Johnson one who is going to pay his wages because Everton won't be able to we have just got players off the wage bill.
They are not going to pay someone else on loan almost double of what our own players are on. Come on, lads, keep it real – we are likely to get some one like Phillips from Blackpool.
792 Posted 14/08/2012 at 15:35:25
Ah-ha: That would tie in with the figures "disclosed" to me...
£7m up front, rising to £12m depending on 3 conditions, 1 being irrefutable verification of life on Mars or in the Everton boardroom before 2014

Unless there is a huge turnaround in fortune, Everton are unlikely jump up the table by more than a couple of places. Two places equates to roughly £2 million extra in prize money. Over two seasons, that would make £4 million extra, and a player that cost £10 million would now be worth significantly less. Better to try and get younger players in and develop them.
If it just so happens that a better off team wishes to buy them at an inflated price then so be it. Before anyone feels the need to point out Pienaar's age, he has cost Everton around £1 million net, taking into account his original fee, what Spurs payed us, and the fee just agreed to bring him back.
It's been said on this site a number of times now, football has changed. For the club to survive it needs to be realistic with regards to transfer policy as it is at present the most effective way of generating significant extra income. Even Man City need to move on players.

Jim, I was disappointed with the suppposed figure of £12m when I considered what other players, with, in my opinion, no greater promise in £20m Henderson, no greater future in £12m, 32 year old Gareth Barry, or even £24m Milner. Or Downing no goals or assists. I think that Rodwell, 21,England full international, should have been more of an £18m up front player. Make no mistake, Rodwell may have been injury prone of late, but he has shown immense skill and presence when fully fit and when you consider the likes of Agger, older, foreign and missing in action for two years, or 43% of his time at the RS, is valued at over £20m I think Rodwell could have been a deal more than the apparent £12m.
We both agree that Dempsey shouldn't be in the frame, though.

Is this a good deal for the club? Seems fair for an injury-prone young player who even when fit was not guaranteed a place on the first team, but less fair when you consider his obvious potential and the fact that we live in a world where Steven Fletcher is valued at £15m....
As for Dempsey, clearly a very good player/would hit the ground running etc. But just like Donovan we've missed the boat on him by a good 3 years. We already have too many players in our first team who will soon be past their peak (Pienaar, 30. Osman, 31. Hibbert, 31. Distin, 34. Neville, 35. Jagielka, 30 on Friday). We just can't afford to blow what little money we have on a 29-year-old.

Didn't Liverpool bring in a shedload of young French starlets in the making a few years ago. In fact they had more young French players in their academy than anything else and it actually caused a great deal of resentment at the time (they all used to sit on the same table together talking French apparently). Where are they now? Fuck knows but none came through.
So £6M for this 17-year-old? Big gamble. I'd sooner we went for Dempsey but what do I know.

Not what I've been told... Seriously, I'd love to tell you my source but I'm afraid it has to remain "undisclosed". (for now)
Is McNulty still a club stooge? Do the BBC have a man (sic) on the inside?
There are more questions than answers (Johhny Nash)...

So we have £12 million; let's say we take £5 million away from that, so we have £7 million to spend. So I guess we could sign one guy for £5 million, £3 million up front, and another guy for lets say £6 million, £4 million up front. We've spent £7 million, with £4 million due in the future, but we're expecting a further £3 million from our sale of Rodwell.
Personally, I still believe Rodwell could have turned into a star for us if it wasn't for injuries, but oh well. I just hope we get decent players from this money, and we take a step forward, just as we did with the Rooney money.
894 Posted 15/08/2012 at 01:18:29
Would he fit into our line-up? DK.
Is Moyes interested in signing him? DK.
What price will he eventually be sold for in today's shrinking market? DK.
Personally, from what I've seen of him, I would welcome him to EFC. But its a bit more complicated than that.

Look at our end-of-the-season run: we beat Man City, the Premoer League winners, and got Game of the Year against Man Utd with a few players that could score goals... so you saying that he wouldn't be worth it — he is a proven goal scorer, so think about it.
And with that track record, we could have a chance at Uefa and definitely a shot at Europa so you saying an extra £4 mil? Sorry, mate, I think you need to do your maths there. Europa isn't just a extra spot — it's a chance for sponsors and we will be able to bring in better players who want to play in Europe
Also saying we need to buy younger players, why is that because the top teams do that, we don't have players to fit out squad now, so why would we buy younger players?? We can't buy young guys and expect them to be able to compete with the world's best players, so yeah they will be getting better slowly while we are dropping further and further in the ladder and getting picked apart by teams with money, so great idea. We buy players we know are good so we can generate more money for younger players and not have to sell to get money.
045 Posted 15/08/2012 at 14:00:30
That's the point and you have missed it. You pay more for strikers because they score goals (Dempsey is to me an old fashioned inside forward). Goals win matches and those people who score lots of them are worth their weight in gold.
That's just a fact of life. It isn't just my opinion so it's understandable that Fulham want £10M for someone who scored 20 plus goals last season. Van Persie is the same age and Arsenal want £30M for him and he has only 12 months left on his contract just like Dempsey.
Put it this way: if Dempsey goes to Liverpool and he probably will I won't fancy him being in the line up facing us come Derby day.

Ok, so say we qualify for Europa league?
Prize money for winning the competition, 3 million. Add that to hopefully (and realistically?) finishing 5th, genterating an extra 2 million in league prize money. Hey, lets say we win the league cup to boot. Prize money 100000! So, there is obviously extra gate revenue and I can honestly say I don't know how much that could be. so we have at least 5.1 million extra generated. Maybe we could achieve this 2 seasons in a row? 10.2 million. So, that pays Dempseys transfer fee. But what about these new higher profile players who want to play in Europe? Like the ones stoke signed last season? Crouch, Palcios? Players that cost 7 to 8 million and demand higher wages.
And then all those high profile sponsors? Throwing money at the club? Yeah, sorry, cant see that really.
I am not against investment in quality players. I would love it if the club just said, yeah, dempsey, 10 million? Job done, heres the wedge Mohammed. But realistically its not worth further exposing the club to debt.
The prize of a years champions league proper is the only way to generate significant extra revenue through the league. Even then, staying in is not guaranteed. Look at the money Liverpool have spent, on players with some pedigree (if over priced) and all they have to show for 3 seasons is a league cup (100000).
Sorry, my maths may not be great, but it beats your "gives sponsors a chance" line for me.

We are going to have one hell of a wage bill at this rate.
