Owen dispels Everton links as 'just rumours'

Michael Owen has described the speculation linking him with Everton as "just rumours'.

The 32 year-old is currently looking for a club after leaving Manchester United and has been tipped for a move to Goodison Park, with the Daily Mail and a slew of dubious "agent" accounts on Twitter the worst offenders.

Owen responded on Twitter to a fan asking about the reports, saying they were 'just rumours'. The former Liverpool striker is still being heavily linked with a move to Stoke City, though.

I wonder of he saw our performance last night and thought to himself, I'm not good enough for that team?

Spot on, Kev, even with our small squad he'll strugle to get a game.

I'd rather we focus on Johnson.

The thing you got to look at it all that is that Owen didn't rule it out though did he???

Why say "just rumours" and not... "There is no truth in this what so ever, I haven't even had contact with Everton" — or something along those lines.

Owen knew he was leaving Man Utd in March. We have now started the new season and he's still yet to find a PL club. If I recall, Pulis has spoken publicly about wanting to sign him, so there's clearly interest.

It begs the question as to why he hasn't found a club, missing out on a vital pre-season. Rumours have abounded all summer that he has spoken with Everton, and wasn't happy with the offer - if this is true then well done to Moyes and the Board for recognising what he offers.

He has done nothing career-wise for 8 years, and without wishing to sound too vitriolic about him, I think he's made some bad career moves, and chased the money rather than the game time.

I sincerely hope this is true (in that the Owen link is just rumours). I read an article questioning his desire to play at the weekend and it does sort of ring true, he seems to care more about horses than football. That's obviously his perogative but in Everton's 'do-or-die', 'all in it together' spirit, I actually think a more mercenary character like Owen could be harmful.

I also frankly don't think he's that good anymore - maybe do a job in the cups against lower opposition, but I'd rather we had younger, hungrier kids being given a run-out as cover/sub. McAlney, Vellios, Gueye, Big Vic.

Sadly I think talk of focusing on Johnson is redundant now, Sunderland appear to have offered decent money and Liverpool are apparently considering a bid too and I'm sure City would prefer to get players off the books than continually loan as they try to find a route back to financial fairplay.

The Blackpool winger is worth a punt I think and this Niang character sounds interesting too.

I agree with everything you worte Chris apart from giving a vic a run out???? As for Adam Johnson, he's a good player, but does he fit us with Mirallas now on board, I think not, too lazy for one. I actually don't think he'll be leaving City until January.

Last I read on Guardian, Sunderland have agreed a 10 million fee for Johnson so he's off the table, apparently Sunderland will meet his wage demands too which I assume are hefty.

Owen fancies himself a lot more than anybody else fancies him, it seems he's not prepared to take a pay cut or play in a mid table outfit. Still thinks he's Saint Michael of Old so I can't see him putting in the work that would be needed to get some form. I doubt Moyes would be interested unless it's a pay-as-you-play-deal and even then he'd be far down the pecking order. I think with 10 minutes left I'd prefer to see a hungry player come on rather than a semi-retired aristocrat with entitlement issues.

Maybe I have him figured wrong of course...

I just wish he'd hurry up and find a club (not ours!) so all these rumours go away and we can breathe easily and not start worrying everytime we see the name Owen and Everton in the same sentence.

As he likes his gee gees, let's put it this way, you can compare him with Shergar, was brilliant but long since dead and gone!

Does anyone have any further information of what came out of the Niang trial?

Kris, the stuff floating around on twitter is mixed. Some saying Everton have ended their interest, some saying he impressed and will sign a 4 year deal.

As others have suggested, it would be a strange signing for DM to make unless the player is 1st-team ready. He'll only be 21 when that deal expires, so if he were not to extend then you'd be looking at selling him on when he's 20.

I can't imagine he didn't impress given what I have heard and seen of the lad at Caen, which tells me if it is still up in the air we can't afford him probably.

Or maybe he just likes splinters in his arse.

Re Niang; We had him on trial and we haven't said it is a no-goer as yet. To me that suggests we are interested but given that he has previously attracted the attention of other decent clubs and there is a history of protracted contract negotiations I wouldn't be surprised if this went the way of the likes of Manny Fernandes.

Not blaming the club about that, just think the lad will go for the highest bid he can attract.

Kinda wish he was another Mirallas type, knows he wants money, but knows he will probably get more game time with Everton, which could lead to a bigger payday slightly later on if he proves himself.

Yes Kris, cos at 32 he's yet to hit his peak...

I thought he was only 17 & we slagged Yakubu for trying to pull the wool over our eyes about his age!

Owen isn't good enough to get in our side.

Johnson I don't think would be a good move. I can't see him putting in the effort Moyes requires so it would end badly. Plus where would he play? Mirallas and Naismith are gonna be used in his position and he certainly wouldn't come just to play back up to Pienaar on the other wing.

Sorry Matt was talking about Niang, not Owen.

The time for Owen to come to Goodison was when he left Newcastle. He would have been guaranteed game time, he would have been our principal striker and importantly Moyes would have got him fit.

But he decided he'd rather warm the Man Utd bench for a few years and play in the Carling Cup. On that basis he can go take a running jump — if he's fit enough.

All that said, I'd still take him, as a bit part player as long as he's paid peanuts and he still want to play in the Capital One Cup.

What did people make of his Goals on Sunday appearance? I thought he talked a good game and almost sounded like a man who loved football, but it just doesn't ring true. His list of demands (stay in North West, high wages, regular football, top side) are patently unrealistic for a 32 year old journeyman (which is clearly what he has become).

He seems like he can take or leave football, and with his earnings he might as well just walk away - I think he's deluded.

He likes a flutter - perhaps he needs the money, who knows?

Good point Keith, hasn't he lost £1.5 in gambling over the years?

Mark - I've never wanted to be a bookie, but I wouldn't mind being his.
