Double swoop for Doyle and Ward

23/08/2012 | Comments (49)
The Daily Mail are back on their usual kick of making up transfer targets based on which match David Moyes decides to go watch. Not one but two Wolves players are therefore the target of a 'double swoop'...

The Mail claims that Kevin Doyle is firmly back on Everton's radar — along with left back Stephen Ward — based on nothing more than Everton manager David Moyes was at Molineux on Tuesday night, apparently to see Doyle and Ward help Wolves to a 3-1 win over Barnsley.

The Mail claims that Moyes has long admired Doyle's unstinting work-rate and had a bid for his services last January rejected.

Has the Mail ever got a transfer story correct? (One involving us, anyway...)

Ward would be decent back up for Baines. It will bite us on the back side one of these days if we don't sort that out.

As for Doyle, I don't know, he's one of those strikers that gets 'work rate' mentioned more often than goals about him. Anyone decent wont want to come here and watch Jelavic play though.

Neither player nowhere good enough in my book. We shouldn't be looking at Ward even as only as cover for Baines, and as for Doyle I fail to see what he would add to the team, I know he has work rate but surly as a stiker your first job is to score goals? I would rather give Vellios a chance than buy him.

You'd have to think that if Moyes takes the time & trouble to go to a championship fixture this close to the deadline...he's seriously considering somebody from the teams involved.

Wouldn't mind either as back-ups. Naismith and Miralla have both played as forwards (though not in the Premier League) so we're not desperate for cover for Jelavic. But Doyle is probably better than Anichebe or Vellios at least, and if for some reason he were happy to come in as a reserve on a cheap deal then fine.

Don't know much about Ward, but some sort of back-up for Baines should be a priorty. I know that Distin, Jags or Neville could all sort of play there, but none would be much good and all are better elsewhere on the park. It doesn't look like we've got anyone coming through the reserves to play left back, so we need some kind of reinforcement even if not much good.

Jesus, No. Doyle from 2 years ago maybe - as an Irish fan, he was piss poor right through the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and would be behind Walters, Cox, Long and Keane going into the WC 2014 qualifiers in my eyes. Looks way past his best - I don't expect him to bang them in in the Championship, let alone the Prem. Ward is average at best, reminds me a bit of Kilbane. Can play in a few positions which may attract him to Moyes but surely theres a left back in the youth set up who can come through as cover when needed?

Ward is offal, truly offal. An honest player who will work hard, but sadly lacking at Premier league level. Especially as a left back. Doesn't have the pace, positioning and tackling ability to play there. Started out as a forward, but Mad Mick McCarthy played him at left back during an injruy crisis and kept on doing it. Wolves fans hate Ward being on the pitch. Think that tells you something...

It is interesting that Moyes was there, it's not really a game you'd watch for fun. He must have been taking an interest in someone and he's a long time admirer of Doyle isn't he? I don't fancy himself, and I they'll probably want £20m for him anyway, based on their utterly ridiculous valuation of Fletcher.

We have Luke Garbutt to cover at left back if need be. As for Doyle, no thank you.

No Ta. If its work rate we want we should have kept Straq. As a player to be known as "hard working" basically means you try hard but ultimately are a bit shit. I don't think LB cover is a priority, as long as Baines is fit and here he will play. Nev won most his England caps as a LB, distin can do a job there as cover. Garbutt and Bidwell are good prospects to so I'd rather we spent our limited funds elsewhere.

As an Irishman who hasn't missed an Ireland international in over 7 years, I have to be honest and say I would hate to see money spent on either player.

Doyle is a trier but isn't clinical and is going downhill the last while. He simply doesn't pose enough threat anymore.

Ward is a fullback who was playing as a striker in League of Ireland football for Bohemians not so long ago. He is nowhere near good enough for the Premier League. His positional sense is awful and his distribution is worse.

If the money is to be spent it should be on somebody who will lift the side even further. Not squad fillers.

They are just guessing, look at what happened with Miralles. We were meant to be eyeing another player from Olympiakos -Fetfatzidis then we swoop and sign Miralles. It could be someone from Barnsley!

Lots of good sense here lads.

Daily Mail is fiction from front page to back - disregard.

But what was Moyes up to? If Mark T is right about their valuation of Doyle that would be the end of that. Plus, as we have just brought in two attacking players anyway, it doesn't seem right does it.

And when Baines was out last season we did cover him well with Nev and Distin (very much needing Heitinga - note). So was looking at anyone?, and if so, who?

Or maybe he just can't help it. You know what he's like. Keeps him out of the pub at least.

The Irish Star had the story too but that Wolves won't let Doyle go for less than € 12.5m
I like Doyle, he's hard working and, fair enough GJ he didn't set the world alight during the qualifiers but he chased every ball and won every header that Trapp had the boys ping at him.
Ward is versatile and quite a decent ball player but his positioning defesnsively is very bad. Played every minute in the league last year for Wolves. What does that tell you? Yeah, I don't know either.

Please don't!!

We have cover for Baines. Distin has shown he can do a job, Neville has played there and Garbutt is meant to be the next big thing.

I'd like to see most or all spent on another forward. Either someone creative or someone to push Jelavic for that striker role (let's face it, he currently has no competition).

Maybe we could get a loan or cheap player in to be a reserve defensive mid, in case Gibson gets injured. I'd like Junior and Barkley given some time in the box to box midfield role though. See if they justify the hype.

Nothing against Doyle, er other than the fact he doesn't score enough... But hopefully this is rubbish, we need to be smart with the pennies we have, and pick up players who are going to have a sell-on value in a couple of years. We'd be better paying down debt or getting some loans in than signing journeymen.

Wolves have just sold Jarvis & Fletcher for a combined price of £24m
£10m for Jarvis & £14m for Fletcher.
They wont let Doyle go on the cheap to. Unless he has a year left
im guessing we probably have about £9-10m left from the sale of Rodwell Cahill & Yobo
There is no way on earth we will have that to spend on players as the bank will have a big piece of that.
In my own opinion if anyone is coming in it will be 1 maybe 2 squad players on a loan. And hopefully to extend contracts for players like Baines Felli etc.

Absoluely agree with the comments here. Neither is good enough for the Blues.

Yes we do need cover for Baines but Ward is not the man and Doyle is just another Andy Johnson clone mostly inconsistant these days.

I love football but if Wolves and Barnsley were playing in my back garden, I'd draw the curtains.

I would have Doyle but only on a free. He would be in ok such as games tomorrow as a lone target man (providing Jelavic was out which is a slight possibilty with the knock he picked up).

And games such as the Sunderland four-nil on bank holiday before the semi-final where jelly was rested. Stracqs deputised well. More than useful to have a squad/target man in who is a grafter who is not injured often and knows he won't be an automatic first choice.

A few years ago I'd have been happy to have Doyle. Good worker with a good attitude. He seems past his best now and as it turned out his best wasn't great. I'd rather have Owen on a pay as you play deal with a small basic. Surely our squad would be stronger with him in it, with fate decreeing that he come on as sub and score a late winner against Liverpool.

I think our squad is looking pretty decent. I'd rather the likes of Vellios and Mcaleny were given some minutes and games here and then when the like of Jelavic and Mirrallas are unable to play than to bring in the likes of Doyle as a third choice striker.

Central midfield is the only position I think we are light in with only Gibson, Fellaini and possibly Osman able to play in the 2 spots in the middle of the park. Maybe Barkley and Junior are ready to step up but I feel one more senior player to cover here would be useful.

Actually I would be interested to see Pienaar in the middle of the park with Mirallas on left wing (where he plays for Belgium) Naismith on the right and Fella continuing behind Jelly. I think Pienaars combination of work ethic, intelligence and great touch would be brilliant in the middle of the park. Shame to break up his left wing link with Baines but reckon Mirallas and him could strike up similar link pretty quickly.

DM said he didn't have to sell Jack Rodwell, and stated that he would like to bring in at least two more players before the end of the season (the potential Barkley loan supposedly being contingent on the squad being strengthened first). The two areas he wanted to strengthen were strikers and wide attackers with pace.

Mirallas is versatile, but doesn't amount to two players on his own, so it makes perfect sense that he would be continuing to look for at least one more attacking player with whatever money he has left, and also possibly be looking for loan targets to strengthen the squad generally.

I agree with the majority in that I hope that this was merely a scouting mission that didn't work out and hope that we have some better options that will bear fruit in the next week .

I have disagreed with Sam elsewhere, so I will be consistent and reaffirm that I see no good reason for DM to wreck his careful plans by trying to force attacking players into more withdrawn roles when Fellaini could easily be the stand-out midfielder in the premiership this year in his more orthodox position.

If the likes of Naismith and Mirallas flop then Fellaini is a good option in the support striker role, but the attacking players (Jelavic, Pienaar, Naismith and Mirallas) have to be given some opportunity to prove their worth in a formation that will hopefully bring the best out of all of them.

Neville and Heitinga are two more players who can cover defensive midfield that Sam has somehow ommitted, but I would also be happy for another option to be brought in on loan as it is one of a number of positions were we may require proven second-choices.

If no-one else is brought in before September 1st, then I would feel let-down given what has been said; if we somehow end up with less players than we have now then I would fell betrayed.

On Doyle I am ambivalent. We could be the perfect club for him to resurrect his career and we could do with some more numbers.

Comes down to price really, as I don't see this as a likely loan with option to buy looking at the transfer business Wolves have done recently.

As DM has said, managers generally prefer to buy British (known quantities) but the best deals, in terms of value for money, are more likely to be for foreign based players the way the market is going.

How's this... we give them Big Vic and £2m - they give us Doyle. I'd be happy with that.. Anichebe would be OK at that level and I think Doyle is a decent team player. OK, he's not a great scorer, but he brings other people into play. (A bit like Heskey in that respect.)

Si Cooper @232

Si, I'm sure I heard on Talksport that the players from the lower clubs in Spain have a basic salary of 1250 Euros a month. So coming to even a Championship side is some payday for them. Did anyone else hear that, I only caught a part of the conversation.

Kev Johnson @465 Are you still available, Kev?

Ray,

Talk Sport = cockneys and some fat ex-Liverpool player talking out of their backsides before hopping into their white van to read the Daily Star.
Not that I'm into stereotyping but it's just how they come across to me.

I can't understand either player being linked and think we have other areas of the team that requires cover.

I'm hoping this French "wonder kid" signs today.
Anyone know the latest?

Funny you should ask that, Ray...

The club told me that EUFA recently introduced new legislation whereby there is a "Kev quota" for each team - and with Mirallas joining, there is no room for me. I must admit, I've never heard of this legislation. It's odd. Maybe the club were just trying to fob me off? All very disappointing.

Cunning, Ray. Very cunning. No wonder they call you 'The Fox'! (At least, I think that's what they're saying.)

Ray,

My profanities are reserved for the (very infrequent) occasion when I listen to Talksport (or whenever I see an image of Suarez or Gerrard). There used to be some Everton supporting radio presenter who was OK but, even then, the split of 30:70 talk to commercials ratio used to drive me insane (I'll never buy from Screwfix again). The rest of them are morons.

Anyway, I don't want to take this thread off topic (as with others!) so I definitely don't want to see those two Wolves players or anyone called Charlie appear at Goodison this week.
