Blues remain keen on Niang

24/08/2012 | Comments (75)
Update Everton remain keen on doing a deal to bring teenage prospect M'Baye Niang to Goodison Park after he impressed David Moyes during his recent trial and are in pole position for the teenager according to a number of UK media sources.

It is not clear if the Club have agreed a fee with Caen despite fresh reports in the Mirror, the Sun, the Mail and now Sky Sports.

Citing La Gazzetta dello Sport, Football Italia reported on Friday that AC Milan have agreed a season-long loan deal with the French club.

UK media sources have suggested since then that it's Everton who still lead the chase for the 17-year-old Frenchman who is believed to have been equally impressed with the Blues and Finch Farm.

The Echo reported that he will discuss his future with his father, who acts as his agent, while Moyes considers options of his own to bolster his thin squad before next week's transfer deadline.

The Mirror's Alan Nixon, whose track record for transfer stories involving Everton this summer has been about as bad as it gets, later claimed the Blues have agreed a £2m fee for Niang.

But while the smart money remained on AC Milan winning the race to sign him, the Mail are claiming Everton have agreed a £2.3m fee and Sky's sources say that the Blues are in pole position, with personal terms already agreed.

Would be good to see him on board, must have talent if us, Arsenal and Milan want him. Get him on a 5 year deal and his value will most likely increase.
A back up for Baines as well and I would be happy with the squad challenging for top 4. With the cup games too, we need options to use in all competitions.

He seems highly rated, a real prospect from what I've read. I'd like to see him come in. Im hoping Junior can step up this season, and Barkley too, with those lads and the additions we have made though I'm actually fairly happy with this summer, as long as no one else leaves.

I think Distin and Neville between them are perfectly adequate cover for Baines... both have extensive LB experience, and either can be replaced in the middle by Heitinga.

The guy we really need a backup for is Howard. What little I've seen of Mucha gives me no confidence at all.

Agree with you Mike. I'd take it a step further and try and find a good quality 'keeper to replace Howard. We're in a position now where Howard should be our backup.

I would of liked to see us get Bosingwa for right-back but I suppose he;s on mega bucks at QPR.

I agree with Alex, I think Boswinga would've been a great signing but I believe Hibbo is getting better with age.

Regarding Niang I would love to see him at the club but I think Moyes could spend the Rodwell money more on an established player as I think top 4 is a real possibility this season.

Forget the Wolves pair.

I agree completely with Mike and Alex. Goalkeeper is the position we badly need cover for. In my view Howard remains one of the best in the league, but a good young keeper or another experienced figure would provide reassurance. Mucha and Taudel don't seem to be good enough - latter may well be ready in a couple of years or so. Nightmare scenario sees us start well and then lose ground after Howard is injured when the window is closed.

The Welsh fella from Wolves - Hennessy - that's the chap - that's who will keep us in the game for the next 10 years. Another Southall!

Bob- the same Hennessy who broke Wolves record for most consecutive games without a clean sheet last season? Think it was 30. Not totally his fault necessarily but not convinced he's the next neville...

Good point, Mark, experienced backup is needed, but Howard would still be my first pick. I just can't understand his knockers, name me another keeper for let's say £5-6million you would rather have? Surely he's been a godsend since we have not had a reliable keeper since Martyn... Remember Wright and Simonsen!!

Because of the nature of goalkeepers (they keep goal), every goal against us is dissected and replayed and questions asked if the keeper could have done better, apart from Howard's once or twice a season blunder I think he's solid. If a striker only fluffed a sitter twice a year we would be happy, no?

I think Howard's a decent keeper, probably in the top 5 in the league. Remember how hard it was to replace Nev? We had to go through a lot of chancers to get to Howard, I'd be worried about getting involved in that again when Howard probably has 5+ years in the tank.

We have one of the best back 5's in the league defensively, I say don't rock the boat.

Aidan -

Nigel Martyn got us there before Tim Howard came along.

Richard Wright also had 7 consecutive clean sheets in the season we finished 7th. Admittedly he went a bit rubbish, but Moyes' record at buying keepers isn't as bad as some would indicate!

Not that any of the guys I just mentioned are a patch on Neville, I should add!

Too right Aidan.

Pick your target and name your budget before looking to shake things up in our defence.

No one knows (because it hasn't happened yet) how Mucha - an international goalkeeper - would fare if given an extended run and a chance to forge an understanding with the 4 in front of him, and Howard is certainly good enough - nearly achieved a record number of clean sheets in a season, I think - to be very difficult to replace, and yet a load of armchair managers are recommending we spend time and money sorting out this part of our squad.

Howard is a top keeper and shouldn't be replaced. Mucha is ok. We could maybe do better, but spending money on a goalkeeper right now seems ridiculous.

Really can't winge about the team at the moment. It's spot on.

I agree, Niang would be great if Milan haven't signed him!

I think we are sorted at LB Distin & Neville can play there, would be good to see Garbutt, Bidwell & Junior make the grade in the 1st team!

Craig Gordon would be ideal back-up in goal and is a free agent!

Col, all those rumours come from the Mirror article. It's quite amusing — and dismaying at the same time — to watch an article get published on a tabloid website and then, within minutes, see a slew of supposed "in the knows" start Tweeting the news (without citing the origin) as if they've picked it up through their sources.

"I'm hearing that so-and-so have had a bid accepted for so-and-so..."

"Just got told that so-and-so is having a medical with so-and-so..."

Greg O'Keeffe of the Echo Tweeted that as far as he'd heard, Everton are interested and in the running but have not had a bid accepted. That's the most reliable info I've seen so far.

Matt Traynor
978 Posted 25/08/2012 at 00:10:38
Lyndon, I've been watching some of these accounts with interest.
As an aside, the ones that have "ITK" in their handle are definitely worth following for comedy value. I was going to say they are parody accounts, but of what? One of them was adamant the RS were signing Evra from Man U for £10m, and Suarez was okay with it, and they'd make a big show of shaking hands!

Some of them seem to be on the money, but I suspect you're right - they are just collating from other sources - one of them was claiming the ITV football account was copying him!

They have 2 main things in their modus operandi:
- recommend you follow lots of similar accounts
- tweet and delete (remove all evidence of their bollocks forecasts)
Together, these mean that if you want to go back and check who said which, when, - no chance.

I learned my lesson this last week - never respond to or post any transfer gossip that you get off twitter.

The really stoopid thing is I actually know a couple of agents, and a few former players - and none of them would ever tweet about it!

Sam # 870, the best goalkeeping performance I have ever seen was by Neville Southall for Wales in a 5-0 loss to Holland. He was applauded off by the Dutch players. David Moyes has pulled off another coup in landing French wonderkid M’Baye Niang.

The Everton chief has followed the £5.3million capture of Kevin Mirallas by agreeing a £2m deal for the Caen forward — leaving Arsenal empty handed for the second time in 24 hours.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was keen to sign the 17-year-old forward, as were AC Milan and Tottenham.

But Moyes nipped in ahead of them and after Niang spent a few days training with the Blues, is expected to sort out personal terms over the next couple of days.

The Everton gaffer has money to spend this summer, after the shock recent departure of Jack Rodwell to Manchester City, and has wasted little time in doing so.

None of the respectable sources seem to be suggesting that this is all true. If it is great though any punt on a 17 year old is a gamble no matter how good his football manager stats are!

What is is good if that if he does come in there won't be much pressure on him as unlike last season we have much better resources in the final third. Think the expectation that was placed on the likes of Barkley by some fans last season when we looked short of ideas is not helpful at all for young players.

It's been the best summer since we signed Bainsey. After Niang we could ask for more but I'd be happy just to get to the end of the window without losing anyone.

Lot's of sites claiming this is news but very few sites I'd trust. I fear this is a lie spawned in the shit factories in tabloid basements that has been echoed around the web.

I'd be delighted to get him for 2 million, from what I've read he has talent but he had a poor season last season, and trouble with injuries. He's a big gamble and much too young to make any mega star claims.

How many academy players have looked like they were set to light the PL on fire only to fizzle and disappear between the ages of 18 and 20. Baxter is a recent example. Vaughan is still the youngest ever PL goalscorer, it wasn't worth a lot in the end.

I guess I'm trying to keep my expectations down to avoid disappointment, I'll be hoping we sign him and he's the French Wayne Rooney and not the French-Scottish Wayne Rooney.

Sky Sports understands Everton are in pole position to land highly-rated Caen striker M'Baye Niang.

Niang has been chased by a host of clubs across Europe with Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and AC Milan all showing an interest in the teenager.

Niang enjoyed training spells with Arsenal and AC Milan, with both clubs expressing interest in signing the youngster.

However, Everton are poised to win the race for the 17-year-old's signature after he impressed during a trial stint at Goodison Park earlier this month. Everton are thought have tabled a €3million (£2.3million) bid to Caen for the forward with the French club willing to sell their prize asset following their relegation from Ligue 1 last season.

David Moyes' side are now waiting to hear if their offer will be accepted, with personal terms with Niang thought to have already been agreed.

Niang is expected to finalise his move to Merseyside in the next few days as Moyes looks to bolster his attacking options before the close of the transfer
window.

Niang's arrival will be a major coup for Moyes with the player regarded as one of the best young talents in Europe.

Now that its being reported on Sky Stan I'mn more confident of us maybe signing him than I was on hearing, or should I say, reading it on the Mirror & Times or Daily Mail websites!

For me it just makes the interest and the chances of buying him more certain as it did when Sky was reporting that Mirallas was over for a medical and in talks to siHgn, which he eventually did so fingers crossed we can get this deal over the line!.

And IF we did get all of the £12m from the Rodwell sale, weve only spent £5.3m on Mirallas and IF we do sign Niang for £2.3m then thats only £7.6m weve spent so in theory we would still have atleast £4m to play with in the final days of the window?!

The articles don't even claim to have heard form "sources close to the player" or other codewords for bullshit. "Sky Sports Understands" = "Sky Sports read it in the Sun this morning and will be damned if they're going to fall behind in the made-up-rubbish arms race". I bet if the Sun wrote a story about Man Utd. planning to resurrect George Best with bionic limbs and 6 livers, Sky Sports would "understand" that too.

To be fair Sky sports don't usually run with a transfer story until they're pretty confident it's true. If they're saying it looks like we're getting him, I take that as a good sign. If true, this would make one hell of an eight month period for this club (Jelavic, Pienaar, Naismith, Miralles, Gibson, Francisco, and then Niang).
Chris James
215 Posted 25/08/2012 at 23:15:41
I think to be fair to the media the reported story is that something has been agreed with club or player, it doesn't mean we're the only people to have agreed said fee/terms of course.
All that said, if we can get a top attacking prospect for £2M then that'll be brilliant. Wouldn't be terrible to get another winger or central midfielder either as cover - Ince at Blackpool is looking pretty impressive.
Trevor Lynes

Ever since the lad supposedly came for a trial all has been ultra quiet. I don't know whether it's good news or not, but it would be great to see more talent coming into our club.

Incidently, Dembele looked fantastic playing for Fulham in midfield today. Every bit as good as Yaya Toure or Viera when he was at Arsenal.

I just hope that BK is not using our present success as a reason to stop recruiting. All the better clubs recruit while they are on top to maintain success. That's why EFC did not sustain success because we always broke up our teams following League Championship wins.

The present team is playing the best football I have seen from an EFC team for decades. The fans deserve to be entertained.

So it's now a proper auction (with the player plus agent being sole arbiters of which is the best bid).

If Niang chooses to go elsewhere, I just hope that BK does not stop us from strengthening our small squad. It would be a crying shame if injuries blighted this brilliant start.

All the better sides have at least two top class Premier League standard players for every position. I sincerely hope that both Barkley and Junior blossom but in the meantime we are still exposed if we have injuries and it would be criminal to waste our great start.

The long suffering fans deserve to be entertained by a succesful team that plays decent football. The potential is there but it must be sustained.

AC Millan are only willing to go with the loan option and Arsenal and Man Utd don't seem to be interested let alone the other so-called big clubs around the world... 406 Posted 26/08/2012 at 20:42:14
I think we need to remember, and I don't think most Evertonians know, he went on trial at the early stages of pre-season to Arsenal and Arsenal were impressed and made a bid but it wasn't good enough for Caen, the upfront amount wasn't enough and it got rejected and Arsenal never went back.

A week or so later, he went over to Milan for a trial with AC and impressed them too and he was very impressed with them and from the off in Milan Niang said he wanted to join them and liked the city and training facilities but AC Milan's offer was just a loan offer with a view to buy which Caen knocked back as they want to sell and Milan's interest went quiet.

He then came on trial to us and we were really impressed with him and vice verse and we were keen to sign him permanently and were in discussions with Caen and he seemed keen on coming but then Milan came back in for him and that's turned his head but it seems like a two-horse race between us and AC Milan but ours is the best offer as we want to buy outright but I think he wants to go to AC more.

So our saving grace is if AC Milan don't come in with an acceptable offer and ours is and then we can sign cos he does like us but wanted AC Milan from the off.

Seems like we might be second choice on this one. Some mixed views on Twitter – which is by no means reliable – stating that he will sign for us today or tomorrow, while others are saying he has chosen Milan as they have put in an upfront cash offer now. I think Milan Diavolo may just be a fan site though. It has all gone rather quiet though, which is what happened before the Mirallas deal.

My interest in this one has waned a little bit. If he really was that good then at £2m and this much publicity there would surely be other clubs in the running. I have heard that after a great initial impact that he had a mediocre time last season and may have some attitude problems. Could be why Milan want to loan him first to run the rule over him?

Reckon he's a gamble, but then I suppose any 17-year-old is.

I think the £2 million pounds quoted is just the down payment, not the whole fee.

Have to remember there is a financial problem throughout Europe, so we may have a chance against teams who would have blown us out of the water previously. AC Milan may also have to consider their position concerning the financial fair play, though I really have no idea about that.

Rumoured that Arsenal couldn't (or wouldn't) even produce a relatively small outlay to keep hold of Alex Song, so maybe we are competing on a more level playing field at the moment?

Still a gamble on Niang, have to hope the club is able to cover itself on this one.

Regarding M'Vila Spurs have made an official bid and they will have money to burn with the sale of Modric I think agreed.... we're not in this I don't think and can never match a bidding war...

Then again, we got Mirallas...

Imagine M'Vila and Gibson with Fella ahead... no... don't even go there David...

Shame if we miss out on Niang. However, hardly the end of the world. Seemed to be more of a signing for the future than the here and now, but the calibre of the clubs in for him suggests he has something about him.

Not keen at all on Kevin Doyle. He's 29 in a few weeks and his goal rate at Wolves was about one in five. For the life of me cannot see why we would spend any serious money on him, not unless Big Vic's off to Wigan!

No chance we could afford mvilla. They want around 13-15m for him.

Sky sports have us linked with yoann gouffran, who at 1.5m is much more in our range...

Our youngsters are getting stuffed every game and the last match had Barkley, Duffy and Vellios playing. It does not augur well for our immediate future.

I must add that I was impressed by Sterling who had a fine game against Man City for Liverpool. By comparison, Rodwell was hardly noticed.

We desperately need a striker, and maybe another keeper. Great start or not, a crocked Jelavic and we're gonna sttruggle to keep a tight distance from the big boys.

BBC McNulty tweets that Niang is off to Milan. Balls! And I doubt he woulda been one for the future; we need back-up and now.

Looks like Milan have pulled out all the stops to get Niang (and if he preferred them then we did well to stay in the hunt for so long) and are talking about him as a 'little Henry' (as in potential rather than stature, I guess).

He is being touted as a starter for them this season, so we won't have to wait too long to see whether we missed out on a big player or a big disappointment.
