Everton inquire about Doyle

27/08/2012 | Comments (91)
Sky Sports 'understands' that both Everton and Aston Villa have lodged inquiries about the availability of Wolves striker, Kevin Doyle.

The 28 year-old, who has scored just 22 goals in three years for the Midlanders, has regularly linked with the Blues over the past year, suggesting that David Moyes may have some interest in him.

At £5m+, however, Everton may not have the cash to splash on the Irishman.

I'm glad we haven't got a spare £5million to waste on Kevin Doyle.

I don't see what he'd bring to us, other than a body with a pulse. This is the kind of 'terrible typical Everton summer' signing we'd make on the last day before the end of the window, when we all come on here and say "for fucks sake, Kenwright is a wanker...".

I doubt we'd do it. But doesn't look promising regarding Niang. Anyone have any info on the Frenchie? I've been updating google and NewsNow relentlessly but not much concrete has come up... kind of have a bad feeling regarding the youngster but I'm going to keep the fingers crossed.

Chris – it doesn't look good, although Milan would leak things if they are fighting for him. They are pretty streetwise after all...

Worried about this. I think we are now above this. In Jelavic we have a high workrate striker who actually scores so Doyle is an expensive and I fear inneffective back up player. I would prefer keep Anichebe. I imagine that there goal per game ratio is not dissimilar afterall, and I worry that Doyle doesn't have the overall game to compensate for his weakness in front of goal. If this is the only option I would have Owen or Carew on a free to be back up alongside Anichebe and put the money into someone else.

I have a bad feeling Chris. Milan are a massive club, but part of me thinks that any player who considers Italian football better than England and Everton is mad. Good luck to him, but we have done everything we can. I seriously think taking any club bias out of it he is making a mistake thinking Italian football is a better option than EFC with our track record with young players

Mark...you must be kiddin...even when injured Owen has scored more goals than Doyle.

I know I'm in the minority here but I think Owen would do a great job for us...If he doesn't then we've not lost anything as he'll cost nothing and be on a deal the club can obviously afford....and at the end of the day the lad is a boyhood blue so one of his dreams must be to score a few for Everton

Clearly owen is the better player but I realy could not see myself being happy seeing that horrible bastard doning blue!
He had his chance and chose to warm the bench at utd. We have moved on, were bigger and better. Maybe im wrong but not for me ta.
Phil Sammon
595 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:28:09
I don't think Doyle's a bad player. His goal to game ratio is bound to be garbage playing in a team like that. He spends more time foraging down the wings than in the 18 yard box.

Niang would be nice but at just 17 I don't know what he will bring to us. He needs to play games surely, and he's not going to get that here.

Owen can knack off. I don't care if he could do a job for us. He's missed an entire pre-season now because either he can't be arsed or he wants too much money to play. We're above him now.

How much would Stoke sell Kenwyne Jones for? Too much maybe. Always thought he could be a special player. Moyes could get the best out of him, for sure.

Mark Pierpoint
597 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:38:18
Mark Lennon, Owen is many things, but a horrible bastard is a bit strong surely. I quite like him. As a person he seems one of the few decent top level footballers. If you compare him to other top players of his generation. Rooney, Terry, A Cole etc. I didn;t want to make this into another column about Owen though

Phil Sammon. I for one don't think that Wolves were that bad. Jarvis was half decent and so is Kightly. I can think of worse offensive units to try and score goals in.

Andy Crooks
598 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:42:22
We've had a great start but our squad is not strong enough. This time next week would we not be better off with either Doyle or Owen added to it?
Mark Tanton
599 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:43:58
I think Joey Barton would have been discussed two years ago, but we wouldn't touch him now - and rightly so.

Charlie Adam is an interesting on for me... Worth thinking about.

I think there'll be two new faces this week, one on loan and one permanent. Probably people who we've not really thought about or discussed.

Nelly Verdonghan
600 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:37:46
There may be various reasons why Owen hasn't done a pre-season seasons... ..... but I'm sure 'can't be arsed' or 'wants too much money' aren't among them.....

Mark Lennon....tell me how would you feel if that 'horrible bastard' scored the winner in the derby ??

Andy Crooks

Just dosnt sit well with me im afraid. He just wants a pay packet and we are so much better than him or that!
Doyle isn't goin to a in the startin line up week in week out, but what he would do is give 110% to get in. And at reading he did score a few didnt he? No more tham 2mil and I wouldnt mind.
Phil Sammon
603 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:49:48
What are they then, Nelly? He's had offers on the table according to him.
Mark Pierpoint
604 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:47:07
We would Andy. The only difference being that Doyle will cost a significant transfer fee for a player to simply fill out the squad. Unless he is asking for ridiculous money, and I genuniely feel that is unlikely, an Owen type player simply makes simple economic sense for us. Even if there are question marks on his fitness, there isn't on his ability to score. If there was a player with a proven fitness and scoring record,AKA not Doyle, I may change my mind on Owen but at the moment he has his positives for us
Nelly Verdonghan
605 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:50:53

Doyle, no thanks. Not worth 5m from us.
Owen, can't hurt I suppose. No fee and will be on minimal wages.
Niang, not too bothered. He's only 17, long way to go for him yet.
Yoann gouffran, why not. Useful winger/forward for 1.5m but similar to mirallas
Mvilla, in our dreams. Out of our price range at 15m.

Reckon moyes will bring in someone out of nowhere like drenthe and straqualursi last year.

Doyle isn't a bad player, intelligent and mobile as well as a willing runner.

There is more to playing up front than scoring goals and it's lazy to use this as the only basis for comparison.

Different situations and opposition calls for different players and it's a squad game.

We play with one up front and Owen won't be able to play alone up front while he has a hole up his arse, Doyle's that type of player. Don't expect it to happen fwiw regardless, I'm sure Moyes has moved on unless it's a loan.

Just as an aside, I've seen our name linked with MVila today, I'm sure we can't afford him, does anyone think we toss our hat in the ring to the tabloids to inflate the price for our competition? There are small margins between us and the others fighting for fourth, as discusses elsewhere, I'm sure there must be some murky goings on with these agents.

Nelly, wind your trunk in mate.

It's well known that Owen is money motivated and riddled with injuries. Why hasn't he signed for a club and had a good pre-season in an attempt to get himself fit? Because he's waiting for someone to match the value he thinks he's worth. I sincerely hope it isn't us

Barry Rathbone
619 Posted 27/08/2012 at 19:54:44
Owen as a footballer is a myth from a bygone age he last controlled a ball properly 18 months before he left Liverpool. The days of "strikers" hanging round the 6 yard box scratching their arse are gone.

Doyle might not be Jelavic but he'll have hunger whereas Owen has none, we've had too many using Goodison as a retirement home, no more thank you very much.

James Stewart

Doyle a big no thanks. We've had enough goal shy strikers in the past.

Adam would be a controversial one. I do think it's the position we need to strengthen. Gibson is the only deep lying playmaker we have and once he went off at the weekend we looked poor.

Mark Pierpoint
633 Posted 27/08/2012 at 20:47:33
Mark 623, that is the most romantic and eloquant thing I have ever heard on toffeeweb, if Owen read that he would retire instantly.
James Martin
634 Posted 27/08/2012 at 20:48:45
I could see Moyes going for Adam, he was interested first time round and likes to have right foot left foot combinations up the pitch. I don't like the notion of taking their unwanted players, especially if its anywhere near the price they paid for him. I would bet however that he owuld be one of those players Moyes would turn aorund and get him back to his best. If he did partner Gibson we'd have a solid midfield pairing with a great passing range on both sides, just a shame about the lack of pace.
James Morgan
635 Posted 27/08/2012 at 20:40:03
Doyle - No
Adam - No
Owen - No
Niang - Yes, based on positive reviews and at the right price.
Don't know anything of this Johnny Russell except his wicked goal in the Dundee derby but just seen the sky sports link as well as the interest in Gouffran.
Surprised nothing has resurfaced about Cerci considering the strong link in January, though I suppose now we've got Mirallas we aren't as desperate for a winger. Wouldn't mind taking a punt on Ince and/or Phillips from Blackpool, they are shining so far this season.
We still have our loan quota to fill so I reckon we will bring in one or two before the window 'slams' shut.
James Morgan

Just to cause a bit of mischief in case you're sitting too comfortably... This M'Villa link sounds a bit fishy. The only way we would be looking at a player like that would be if we were expecting a big money panic buy offer from Arsenal or Man City for Fellaini...
Kev Johnson
654 Posted 27/08/2012 at 21:59:11
Don't know why everyone wants Niang. What do we know about him? He plays in the French 2nd division, he's supposed to be really promising and Milan are after him. Youtube shows a single pretty simple goal. That's all!

I don't think we need another promising player right now. Bringing Barkely through and getting Mirallas bedded in over the next few months should be enough for now. Then there's Gueye, who either needs to move on up or move on out. Not to mention Velios and Duffy, who are in similar positions.

We need someone who can come in and do a job for us, either squad-wise or team-wise. So Doyle or Adam would be fine with me. Don't fancy Owen - not because he used to play for LFC (so did Sheedy, Harper and various others) - but because (a) he wouldn't fit in with the way we play and (b) he's always bloody injured.

657 Posted 27/08/2012 at 22:02:50
An out and out right winger would be nice, but my biggest concerns are our lack of cover at left back, striker and central midfield. If Gibson and Fellaini were both out at the same time, what would we have in the middle? N'Zonzi would do for me and, yes, even Adam. He might have been a big fish in a small pond at Blackpool - a situation reversed across the park - but if he came to us he'd have something to prove and would be subject to Moyes' emphasis on graft.

Russell looks good, Niang sounds good, Owen is good.. as for the point about left back cover, havent we got some youngsters coming thru there? we paid a million for Garbutt over 3 years ago surely that's got to come good at some point

Doyle I've never been impressed with but guess the manager must see something there if he is interested. The more strikers the better really, if we just rely on Jelavic then it could go badly wrong, Owens a proven finisher and having a few other classy strikers to put our defence through their paces in training can only be good

Did someone posting on here not say owen had signed last week (itk) and it turned out to be bollocks. Sky have us 1/1 to sign adam, talksport have us bidding for m'vila.

Brendan - that's different. I'm promising but proven! Also light but filling, bitter but sweet, living but dead! Anyway, enough about me...

I tire of promising players. (Bye-bye Jose Baxter, bye-bye Jack Rodwell.) Give me someone who can deliver the goods. This can only mean one thing: I am officially getting old. (That's "young but old" obviously.)

Phil Sammon
670 Posted 27/08/2012 at 22:38:31
Charlie Adam - can we afford to play a DM that can't tackle? I'm sure Miralles would love to have him spraying balls up the wing but the rest of his game is woeful.

Left back - Baines, Distin, Neville, Garbutt, Bidwell.

Right Winger - We've just payed £6 million for one of them!

Striker - We need one.

Alex Cooke
674 Posted 27/08/2012 at 23:00:17
Would anyone be averse to getting a right back in for low amount and a loan striker or god forbid Owen on a pay as you PLAY and keeping any serious cash left over from Rodwell in case?

We need to cover injuries or freshen up in January? Happy with the team now. Think we've had our star signings already. Kevin hasn't even played yet and Vellios, Barkley and even Gueye (who played well back end of last season) are yet to make an appearance.

I'd rather make a few sensible squad signings for next to Nothing now and keep some in the pot for January. As much as this is a great start I also recall that the last time. We made the good start. We only just scraped the Champions League by the end as we were knackered and sold Gravesen to Madrid at Xmas.

Luckily we brought in Arteta on loan and he came good to drag us into fourth. Food for thought.
Alex Cooke
675 Posted 27/08/2012 at 23:08:39
Agree with Phil Sammon's last post. Striker back-up. Possibly low key investment in a right back for the future. Hibbo should be given a fair crack though as although he's not CL class, we're not in Europe this year and he's done okay recently and whipped a few decent balls in the back end of last season. Defo ahead of Neville.
Mike Powell

It makes me cringe even at the thought of that little mercenary Owen joining us. The little tosser is looking for one last pay-off and that's it but I don't think I have to worry because I know we won't sign him.

Ince from Blackpool? You're having a laugh — did you see him in the play-offs last season? He was woeful! Come on, we have a great squad; if we are going to improve it, we need better players than what has been mentioned here.
Anto Byrne
698 Posted 28/08/2012 at 04:04:07
Let him go to Milan and then we get him on a season-long loan. Bring back the Stracq before Doyle. Adam as cover in the midfield and then for him to shove it up them in the Derby. Swap Ince for Coleman and get rid of Anchibe to Wigan on a year-long loan.

Owen isn't good enough anymore and only a handful of games in the last two years means he is too injury-prone. On a free and pay-as-you-play, would he be worth a punt?
Martin Mason
703 Posted 28/08/2012 at 06:39:02
Again it's part of the EFC tragedy, we get a good first team and now replacement players have to be as good or close to as good for us to have sustainable progress. Before we could rely on utility players and very young players with potential.

Regarding who may come in and out before the window closes, it's very intriguing but given their exceptional success in recent times I've great trust in the current management team to make the right decisions. If I had to comment though I'd say no to Owen, he's the past not the future. Adams is an unpleasant little piece of work with no pace and I personally would hate to see him in a Blue shirt; Doyle I put very much in the "donkey" class and not worth any money. If I had a hope it'd be that we take Berbatov on loan from United for a year, he has a totally unjustified reputation for being lazy but he isn't and he can play as a lone forward with a magic first touch and ability to hold up the ball.

Anto Meehan
707 Posted 28/08/2012 at 07:40:05
Just heard we've lodged a £9.5 million bid for Doyle but Wolves are holding out for £12 million.

Can't believe we'd waste that sort of money, I'm Irish and have seen that Doyle is on a steep downhill path in his career. Surely we can't be wasting money like this!!

There has to be some good young talent on the continent to pick up instead, even the pound v euro rate is at its most favourable towards the pound in years.....

I don't get this one :-(

Craig Fletcher
711 Posted 28/08/2012 at 08:23:49
Might be in the minority here, but Owen in on a pay-as-you-play deal could be worthwhile; as long as we get him in on the cheap. Another striker with experience and a good goals to games ratio could be useful. Naismith and Miralles are likely to play either on the wing or behind the striker this season; so if; heaven forbid, Jelavic gets injured, we may be struggling for depth up front.
Chris Morris
712 Posted 28/08/2012 at 08:36:45
Craig @711

It depends what type of deal you get him on. If he demands high wages then Everton should spit at him and send him on his way.

If he comes without a signing on fee and "average" wages then it may not be the worst bit of business we've done.

Personally though, I don't want him anywhere near our club

Niall Hussey

#707 Anto - that is surely a joke, there's more chance of Everton offering 9.5m for me than Doyle. We don't have that sort of money in any case, but if we did there's no way we'd offer that for him!! Get real everyone.
Chris Morris
717 Posted 28/08/2012 at 08:43:49
I think £9.5m is really excessive. Honestly though, I've always liked him. I think he's the type of player who works so hard and makes others look better. A lot of Wolves goals had him involved in the move, and the same with Reading before that.

He's a good player doing the labour, but I don't think we need him. In fact we just got rid of one of those players in Cahill. Tim's effectiveness went a couple of seasons ago, but I'm not sure Doyle would get the goals Tim did; he'd certainly work for them though

Chris @712,

Point taken, and agreed, I certainly wouldn't want to us to be paying the earth for his wages.
But if the choice came down to Owen for bugger all or Doyle for silly money; I'd rather take Owen.

Mark Tanton (623) nicely put. I'm not sure I would bracket Owen with those players (yet) but you're right, we need to be cautious. I recall the commentators rhapsodizing over Gascoigne when he finally dribbled past a couple of players about ten games into his Everton career... that was against Burnley or someone in the cup.

Difference with Owen is he lost his pace years ago and he won't try and dribble past anyone. He remains a good finisher, but... happy to sit out the games and collect wages? That did seem to be the case at Old Trafford. I dunno if his 'boyhood-blueness' would really make any difference to that attitude. Only he knows that.

Owen on a purely pay as you play deal wouldn't be terrible, but I think that has to be seen as the last resort.
It feels like such a progressive 6 months or so for the club in terms of signings, players released and results that old lags like Owen somehow feel like a step backwards.

The shout for Berbatov above is an intriguing one though. A proven class striker with great first touch. That said, I'm not sure how he'd fit in the one for all team ethic, can't see him getting his foot in or tackling back! ;-)

Berbatov wouldn't be part of Plan A. The question will always be: would you drop Felli or Jela to accomodate him? Not forgetting Mirallas looks to have an eye for goal too.

Sorry but I'd say no to Owen, Doyle and Berbaflop. I think for work ethic with an eye for goal, Moyes would probably prefer a Shane Long type player

Chris, exactly re Berbatov.

Not exactly the ideal Moyes player. I couldn't in this universe see him dutifully following the Gaffer's instructions from the sideline to "track back".

With City messing Swansea around and Scott Sinclair not signing a new contract, is it not worth offering straight up £6mill cash for him and Moyes showing a commited desire to sign him as he did with Mirallas with the promise of more games? It's still a step up for the lad with more game time and at £6.2mill is an infinitely better move than Doyle for an alleged £7+mill.

Doyle or Owen? I should have known something was going to piss on my parade.

I think we're all assuming there's much cash left - there very well might not be, Mirallas might represent a 'blow out' for the club. Pathetic and sad as it sounds but that might be as much as we scrimp together. Still think there'll be some interesting new faces, but perhaps next to nothing cost wise.

Even if we went in for Berbatov, would Fergy deal him to us? He could bluster all he wanted a week ago, but he's not stupid. He knows better than us, his club was beaten by a better side. So, he'd help that club further? Can't see it. Would be nice though, Berba in, even if just for a season.

Moyes had to deal with Yak and Saha's "don't feel like it today" for years. He could handle Berbatov for a season. And wouldn't Berbatov bust his ass if only because he finally got to play again? Not to mention, he would be coming to a side that can flow into attack baby! He'd sure get scoring chances.

Berbatov is a no go. On his money I can only see him going to Turkey or Russia realistically

Sorry but signing Doyle is a backward step for me. The guy turns 29 in a couple of weeks so will have little resale value in a couple of years time when his contract is running down.

He has a high work rate but averaged about 1 goal in every 5 games for Wolves, i.e. Anichebe standard. Personally I think Mirralas looks like he could do a job up top if the worst happened to Jelavic (with Velios as 3rd choice). He's 6 foot tall and banged in enough goals in Greece so at least knows where the goal is.

A swap deal: Doyle for Anichebe I would not say no to, I guess. Otherwise bring a striker in on loan for Jelavic as whoever comes in is not going to start many games if Jelavic is fit.

If we're going to carry one with Fellaini playing up top then we need another centre mid in the holding role.

I personally think the doyle for 9 million is absolute rubbish. Moyes would no way spash that sort of cash on a player of his ilk, whats more is the fact that we don't have 9 million pounds!
Ramsey on loan anyone? Dont think he will be in arsenals starting eleven much.

Sinclair is a wide left player rather than a CF (I think I'm right in saying) so don't think it's an either or.

Actually he's only the second best winger at Swansea, their RM; Dyer is the better player IMO.

Seem to remember Cerci was in the frame for 6m in December and they wouldn't take a loan, he can play out wide and up front and is rapid.. Maybe Mirallas fills that space now.

I'd personally return for Fernandes who would fit in to one of the deep lying midfield roles a treat, and he can play our wide or in one of the three AM positions we seem to favour - class act.
