Milan win race for Niang

28/08/2012 | Comments (32)
With media stories suggesting that Everton and AC Milan have been trading pole position in the race to sign M'Baye Niang for the past week, it looks as though the Italians have won out.

The French teenager is believed to have been impressed with his trial at Everton a couple of weeks ago and had agreed personal terms on a potential transfer from Caen.

Milan, however, stepped in and have persuaded Caen to part with the 17 year-old for just €1.7m, rising to €3m on appearances.

Niang met with the club's vice-president Adriano Galliani before the latter tied up the loose ends with Caen and the transfer was apparently concluded after that.

Niang brushed off comparisons with Thierry Henry, saying: "No comparison, Henry is Henry, Niang is Niang. I realized a dream by coming [to Milan]. Now it's up to me to confirm myself in this great club."

David Moyes will now reassess his options ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.

Crap! Bye bye M'baye! Oh well! Onwards and upwards I suppose! But if we end up with Owen... The Mr Tinkles (the cat) gets it!

Gutted! I thought we'd pulled off a future game changing signing for next to nothing.

Whilst not an Owen fan, getting someone who is a proven Premiership goal scorer in to boast the squad, for free sounds alright to me. If Jelavic was to get injured we'd struggle. Vellios is unproven, Anichebe has proven not to be at this level and I get the impression Mirallas has been brought in to play out wide.

I just hope we get another signing in and a couple of frees / loans yo bulk out the squad.

I don't think he's actually signed yet has he?

I'm just impressed that nobody has abused him for choosing them over us. Well done to all.

Milan is obviously a great club, but I think it's an odd decision as the premier league is obviously the better league (in terms of payment too) and I'd say he's far more likely to get a game here than at AC.

Without casting aspersions on Italian football, I wonder if perhaps a few extra Lira was passed under the table to the agent/father? ;-)

Chris, #733, I don't think your alluding to a bigger agent fee is being disingenuous at all, in fact it's a long established practice that has seen many a player make the "wrong" choice football-wise, whilst the agent is laughing all the way to the bank - and when it's family involved it's even more plausible. That said, it's not a practice restricted to Italian football, in fact many would argue that the rise of the mythical "superagent" was as a result of the cash influx to the Premier League with the TV deal.

Also, I think at 17, unless he is an absolute wonder-kid, he's not going to be commanding substantial wages. Bear in mind that with differing tax laws between member states, you can end up having to pay a player almost double what he gets in Italy or Spain, to leave him with the same take home. Alex Song left Arsenal as he wanted a rise on his £55k a week, and now gets £80k a week at Barcelona - even if he'd got the £130k a week he was looking for at Arsenal, he's still done better.

The following will sound totally short-termist, but justified I believe.

There is a brief, one-season window here to challenge for top 4 before 5 things things inevitably happen:

1) the RS spend another £30-£40m Net improving their team
2) before Tottenham appoint a competetant manager, with money to spend.
3) Wenger is racks up another trophyless season, capitulates and spends big.
4) We liquidate more of our squad, probably one of our big saleable stars (Jella, Felli, Baines, or worse still, Moyes) - because in reality, the sale of Rodwell and Bankruptcy of Rangers. Depressingly its the same Board.
5) Key members of our squad age further (Neville, Distin, Osman, Howard, Pienaar) although all five have plenty of gas in the tank for now, and likely long careers, older players do tend to hit a tipping point of decline quite quickly.

Point 5 of course is the reason to sign young potential like Niang, but taken together, points 1-5 present a better case for conserving the cash and spending it on someone who can give us a boost while there is this brief window to compete for top 4......even if that was 2-3m to loan for the likes of Donovan (insert your favourite loan target here)....I'm thinking short team this year.

Re Matt, ...with differing tax laws between EU member states, you can end up having to pay a player almost double what he gets in Italy or Spain, to leave him with the same take home....
Matt, considering the problems in Italy and Spain, maybe it's about time they satarted taxing their millionaires. Unless we fall for the old ...yer having a laffer curve argument, which was employed in the US int he 80s, leading to the largest US govt debt in history

If it's true we have missed out, I am not shocked by the usual dithering we do in the transfer market and probably trying to do it on the cheap. We gave him a trial and either he was the real deal or not. If he was, then just sign him — stop messing about and making our business public to other clubs.

My thoughts exactly... mentioned as such on the Doyle and Dundee player links.

I would defo try something... give Coleman a go at right back and if no good buy someone decent there.

Second a loan striker with something to prove and option of buying if he works out, when we have next year's revenue. Owen as backup to that as well on a one-year contract would boost numbers.

Mr Sammon,

Leeds spent £200million. Why do people feel the need to exagerate the 'doing a Leeds' paradigm?

I agree Phil. I also am glad to be legitimately linked to players such as these and we're still in with a shout.

Usually the ones we get we've never seen coming so lets all chill (myself included) and see what happens before the window closes.

Now I know it's only 2 games in but the EPL seems as usual like a very top heavy league with most of the teams being crap. We could yet pull off a swoop but probably more likely in January

Caen has announced the transfer to Milan. So that's that.

Good luck to him. He picked the wrong club.

Good call James. Probably for the best. It'd be nice to have a good, solid player that can contribute now (22-25 yrs old; maybe on loan) and then splash cash for an impact player in Jan when we're near the top of the table and clubs are looking to dump payroll amidst an average season.

Disappointed in this but not overly surprised. AC Milan have much more recent success than us and I can see Milan trumping Merseyside in the eyes of a young French lad (The Grafton closed down a few years ago).

Maybe he IS thinking of his personal development rather than instant dosh. Milan seem to have promised him first-team involvement and the style of play in Serie A may suit him more than the hurly-burly of the EPL. He is young enough that, should he prove himself in Italy, he can get a big money move over here in a couple of years time when he is barely in his twenties.

Harsh to criticise the club on this. The lad and his father obviously had a plan to stoke up interest and draw offers so that they could pick from a few decent offers. Getting into a bidding war with Milan may only have drawn the saga out to the extent that we were unable to do any business after he had made his decision.

I think we're all assuming there's much cash left - there very well might not be, Mirallas might represent a 'blow out' for the club. Pathetic and sad as it sounds but that might be as much as we scrimp together. Still think there'll be some interesting new faces, but perhaps next to nothing cost wise.

Eugene Wilson (758), are you actually serious? The lad was given a choice between playing for Milan and Everton and choose Milan. What the hell has dithering got to do with it? As a pure footballing decision it's hard to argue with, even with your blue tinted specs on.

Good luck to the lad.

Look on the bright side. Signing a youngster is always going to be a risk. Remember Nee Lamptey anyone? Hailed has the next Pele. See what became of him. If someone says no to Everton, the loss is his - not ours. That is how I see things.

Eugene, 758, I thought that our offer was concrete in the first place and was accepted. It wasn't until then that AC Milan upped theirs and then it was a choice between us and them. Niang didn't see us as first option and so good luck to the lad - I'm sure he will enjoy warming the bench in the exceedingly cold Milan Winters. I think it has been mentioned on here before, but do we have the cash to buy players with potential ? - our list of players that didn't make it is already populated. Would it not be wiser to channel our funds into another seasoned pro and bring on some of our own youth?

Shame... Still, you never know the fates may yet heave Kenwright into the weeds... and finally let some real investors into the club. Just a few dollars more is all we ever needed. Shame again.

Not to worry about Niang. Remember when the Shite signed Florent Sinama Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec who were supposed to be the two most talented young players in France? Where are they now?? Certainly not lighting up the Premiership.

David Chait

Kase - Apparently Eugene has real evidence it was the club dithering and not the player, who had a couple deals on the table and was, together with his agent, seeing if any better offers were made or just deciding which one they preferred.

I'm afraid Everton just cant win with transfers.. even the Mirallas deal was called protacted.. I mean honestly?

I know Everton have been crap with transfers in the past but even when we try to scout the best youngsters around etc we get criticised. Obviously the best youngsters will have their pick of clubs and we aren't as attractive a proposition as many others. But it's refreshing to at least be linked with the better players

I think he has probably made the right decision if he has signed for Milan. Any player under 20 will find it difficult to get game time under Moyes's management, irrespective of ability.
