Moyes turns to N'Zonzi after Essien bid fails

30/08/2012 | Comments (41)
The Mail report that Everton are opened talks with Blackburn midfielder Steven N'Zonzi after a bid to bring Michael Essien in loan was rejected by Chelsea.

Rumours surfaced on Twitter this afternoon that David Moyes was in personal talks with the Blackburn midfielder — apparently about the possibility of a loan switch as well — but the Essien link was hitherto one that just seemed to make sense seeing as the Ghanaian's first-team options at Stamford Bridge look limited given the recent incomings there.

Reports that Chelsea didn't want to let him go to a rival club for the Premier League title have not been confirmed!

Everton's interest in N'Zonzi is also reported by the Mirror, whose sports writers seem to have had a similar tendency as those at the Mail to scour Twitter for their rumours this summer.

I think we should nail this one, N'Zonzi's a good player.

Is it just me or does anyone else get a gut feeling when a transfer rumour's a goer?

No! No! No! No!

He is slow and lazy. I remember a particularly bad evening game last season when he gave the ball away in his own half and he just shrugged in resignation, without making any attempt to get back. That sort of attitude always goes down well with the fans . . .NOT!

I'd even prefer that fat old wind up merchant Adam to N'Zonzi, and I'd be really gutted if we got him. Both of them would be a waste of money on fees and wages.

If anything Gary, Moyes would whip him into running more and running back but to be honest I like the kid. He is 6'4 so maybe centre half cover if it gets tight at the back. Plus I'm not gonna lie I love on FIFA aswell so yea I'll enjoy it If we do get him

That's right, Gary, I'm 100% with you. I just hope we don't panic buy.....

I don't mind N'Zonzi. Not really like a Moyes-type workmanlike player, but his cleverness and technique compensates for it. I think if we got him it would be a smart move, certainly better than Adam and could add something different, like last season with Drenthe. Bring him in, the more the merrier (except Adam).

Would prefer Essien. But no top contender is going to help us at this point. They'de rather just pay the wages and let a player like Essian sit, than send him to us. We're going to have to get use to that. Essien? Would have been nice. He'd fit right in.

Oh well. That's what we get. Just think back to the the good ol yester-january, when teams couldn't wait to loan/sell players to us. Only Everton. What could be the harm?

Sigh. I guess we'll just have to make do.

Looking forward to tomorrow. Essien not totally out of the question I would imagine. I think its only us blues that fancy our chances at the top 4 all my football mates laugh at me dotingly when I suggest it. I can see a big name surprise tomorrow. Here's hoping.

Really surprised at the negative reactions to this. Central midfield is exactly what we need. If we got N'Zonzi and Oviedo (sp?) I'd be extremely happy with our squad.

Didn't Blackburn say they wanted £10 million for him not so long ago.

That's him out then unless it's a loan.

Strong rumours about Oviedo though...

Essien is completely past it. Was a fantastic player, mind you.

It's hard to judge N'Zonzi on Match of the Day highlights. He is technically very good, but I'm not sure about his engine and desire. Maybe he'd be more inclined to put the effort in for supporters who don't boo their own team.

Just sit back and trust Moyes I guess. He doesn't get much wrong.

Get after Essien if there's any truth in it. Nzonzi, hmmmmmmmmmmm I don't know. I've seen him be excellent but I've also seen him be wasteful, very wasteful.

Adam (*%^&£*% off)

The problem with rumours like Essien and N'Zonzi is, I imagine both would expect first team football, and not just be sitting on the bench.

Two good targets and proven Premier League players. Hope Owen goes to Stoke and Adam goes too.

Just how bad is Andy Carroll now at West Hoof Utd? I prefer Moyes brings in players that can be turned into superstars and sold for zillions to Citeh.

If either was to come in then Barkley must be loaned out. He looks no nearer getting a starting place than he was a couple of seasons back. He urgently needs more playing time, and if that's got to be in the Championship then so be it. How about a straight loan swap – Barkley for N'Zonzi?

I was excited about the N'Zonzi link until I came here. I've only seen snippets of him (MOTD), but though he looked useful. If he is lazy (as suggested) maybe he wouldn't fit in. On the flipside, maybe competition for places would bring out the graft in him.

Before injuries Essien was, in my oppinion, one of the best midfielders on the planet. He's obviously not at that level now but I think he is still good enough to do a job for us. He also has a winning mentality which would be beneficial in the dressing room.

If Essien was available for £7m and the board have not backed Moyes to do it (as rumoured) then its another example of the board letting us down again.

I've not been a participant in Blue Union but am amazed when they get bashed on here for making the obvious point the Moyes Miracles of building teams that could contend for the top four are have been p!ssed away on several occasions by a board that is incapable of throwing a final piece of modest investment behind it......

You're right John, we were in for Essien and he wasn't backed. Just like Kendall was in for Flo.

Haven't got a clue on the N'Zonzi guy. There's this fashion for signing players with N' at the start of their names. We passed on the old fashion for signing M' players, but we could be in line for a lot of Irish in the next window.

Lee Preston
518 Posted 31/08/2012 at 10:30:57
Come on John, there's plenty to bash the board about, but let's not stoop to rumours.

We don't know that Essien was even available, let alone for £7 million, so keep to the facts lad.

John Feeley
522 Posted 31/08/2012 at 10:42:53
Fair point Lee, looks gullible to adjoin my point to a baseless rumour.

But I guarantee we'll finish the window with negative or zero net spending and a lower wage bill than last season. I'm not asking them to hand Moyes a bazooka, just untie one of his hands a bit...

In other words just provide a little evidence that operating stategy of the Board isn't to (slowly) liquidate the squad.

Bobby Thomas

It was Joe Royle who wasnt backed in relation to Flo.

Dont think Howard would have even known who he was by that point...........

What a footballer Essien.......was.

A loan would have been good in terms of getting a player in for a season who knows high standards, has played top level stuff and would have been a very good man to have in at the club a well a being a watered down version of the top class player he is/was.

But anything else, for me, would be non starter. His career has unfortunately been destroyed by knee injuries, he never really got a chance to shown what he could have been.

£7 million for him? We are looking to go in completely the other direction, which is younger, progressing players generally 24-ish and under. The route we HAVE to go.

And I know its a boring signing, but we DO need a deep midfielder. Phil Neville's 34 and we only have Gibson, Rodwell would have played a lot of football this year if fit.

We took the Rodders money to boost the squad but we still need to replace him within the squad. You can get a player in there reasonably cheaply for that position, I'm of the opinion anyone with a good football brain can play holding.

I wouldn't judge anyone on last season at Blackburn, it seemed like a horrible place to be playing your football. Clueless owners, incompetent manager and fans who weren't bothering to support their own team.

I can easily imagine someone looking lazy and disinterested there then coming here and looking totally different.

Essien for £7 million? How many games has he been injured for in the last two seasons? A loan would be it — not worth that money,

I think N'Zonzi could be good given a new lease of life... totally agree with you, Mike, he could be good.

Every player who can help Everton should be welcome... If Moyes wants him, I am sure that he has a good reason why he wants to sign him!

Our manager has built a good team the last years! And this time it seems to be possibly to increase the quality of the squad! Alternatives on the bench is always good.

Hopefully Everton could become the biggest surprise in these new season. Nobody has expected the Toon or Spurs in the top 6 last season... Everton have the big advantage that we already have a team. Others like Arsenal, Spurs or the red club across the park need to build a new team first...
