Moyes could turn to Hitzlsperger

Everton are being linked with free agent midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger as David Moyes seeks to plug the hole in midfield left by the thwarted move for Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe and Darron Gibson's injury.

Ex-Aston Villa man Hitzlsperger, 30, is out of contract having been released by Wolfsburg in the summer and both the Daily Mail and The Mirror suggest Moyes will offer him a short-term deal.

Good move. Hope it's true.

Could do a lot worse if true. Has looked a decent player from what I've seen in the past, though wondering if the release signifies he's been going downhill recently

Got to be worth a punt even if as an insurance against, god forbid, more injuries.

Not sure. Not really a holding midfielder but no harm if he's cheap I suppose...

He looked good for a while at Villa, though that is based on clips on MotD. Not sure what has happened to him since. Hopefully (if he does become a member of our happy band) he is just really suited to the EPL and is enthusiastic about making the most of the limited career he has left.

If I remember rightly, he blew hot and cold at Villa.

Defo a menace on his day, didn't he used to have a cracking shot on him as well?

He's getting on now and don't forget as even a Ggermanophile I see the likes of an aging Per Mertesacker who is sort of ok for the German national side but sadly lacking and a liability against quick strikers looking shocking for Arsenal.

Think you're right Jamie, he's been floating around a few different clubs in the past couple of years and it's been a while since he's been selected for the national team so I'm guessing he's on the way towards a comfortable retirement.

Still, no-one gets 50 caps for the German national team by accident and he was quality for Villa. Get him in, he's an experienced pro who will be a good squad player for the season.

He is only 30 Gavin this fella so worth a go and as for the Arsenal German, they have yet to concede a goal yet with him in the side, Kendall even tipping them for outside chance for the league due to them tightening the back four up.

Mertersaker is woeful, but that's neither here nor there.

Always liked Hitzlsperger, that left foot is a weapon. For a freebie, why not.

Great left foot. Wasn't he called "The Hammer" when he was at Villa. I think I'm right in saying he was at West Ham not so long ago and sis t set the world on fire. Still worth a short term deal as cover I reckon.

Nowt to lose, why not?
Would be good to have that German winning mentality in the side.

Owen Hargreaves is also a free agent and a better player.

Hargreaves is finished though Mike. I don't think we will see him play again, shame really

Decent player, Daily Mail and Mirror = complete bollocks.

Randomly generated links to available players fills empty space in shit papers.

That said, although he wouldn't figure in our best team I think he would be a good option on the bench and could fill in well when needed.
And he's free.

I think he was at West Ham but was injured all the time. As long as he doesn't demand big wages I can't see the harm if he's on a free.

Almost a no brainer

He is talented, free and available. If he plays well he has a chance of a longer deal or another club might come in for him

It worked with Lucas Neill and could work again

First off I like Hitzlsperger always thought he was a good player, but this is complete madness. Why loan out a promising 18yr old midfielder and then sign an injury prone ageing player in the same position. Barkley should have been given a chance over him.

James

Barkley was never going to be given a proper chance, other than the odd 15 mins here and there. If Hitzlsperger joins it should allow Barkley to stay at Wednesday for the whole season. Starting games in the Championship will be better for his development than the odd sub appearance in the Premiership.

He is crap, as been for a few years so no thanks. I think it's all bollocks anyway — just something to fill the pages of the daily rags.

I'm close to a West Ham fan who described Hitzelsberger as a colossus player. Presumably that was compared to other West Ham players?? Anyways he will do on a free. Tough in the tackle and a superb left foot from my memories of him. Premier League experience. Worth a punt definitely.

Meet started badly, but he has been fantastic this season, and has been keeping koschelny, easily arsenal's best defender last season, out of the side. Which games have U been watching Phil? The hammer would be a good acquisition to the squad, for sure. He reminds me a bit of Gibson, and has a fantastic left foot. If we got him for 6months or a year, id be extremely pleased.

Good point about Lucas Neill, John.

I'm in the Midlands and (am ashamed to say) that I get to Villa as often as I get to the Grand Old Lady these days.

Thomas was definitely a bit of a good day/bad day player when he was at Villa Park and you have to ask why Wolsfburg released him and why nobody has picked him up yet.

On balance I'd say get him if he's not too expensive.

I think Moysie has answered the Barkley question perfectly.

If it meant Scott Gemmill or Neville, I would go with Scott. This is a no-brainier.

Anyone familiar with Hitzlsperger knows he can do what Gibson never could. He can rifle a ball in as a snapshot anywhere within 30 yards of the goal without everyone and his brother in the stadium knowing that it's coming. His forcing through passes and defensive tackling are as good as any player's anywhere.

As Felix Magath and Hitzlsperger must know, the only potential downside is whether he has recovered in the last three months from the thigh injury he sustained and carried for a year at Wolfsburg. Moyes must have access to this information. Fitness, not quality, is the issue here. Let's wait and see whether it's the Hitzman now or Quo Vadis in January — or perhaps even both.
