Baines to Man Utd – £8M + Evra?

25/11/2012 | Comments (31)
Still six weeks to go before the January transfer window opens but that is not stopping the likes of the Sunday Express resurrecting the old Baines to United rumblings with a completely unsubstantiated claim that Manchester United believe they can land Leighton Baines in January.

James Desborough claims that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson 'reckons' Baines will head to Old Trafford for as little as £8M plus a player thrown in. And he's also figured out that Everton manager David Moyes would ideally like to take Patrice Evra to Goodison as part of the deal. Without Evra, he says the fee would rise to £11M.

I think they missed a 1 in front of the 8?!?! How old is Evra, 32??? I think we would be crazy (even if this were true) to let Bainsey go for £18 Mill plus Evra, much too valuable even if he has been a little off lately, although a lot of his form is tied to Peanuts I'm afraid, but when they are both on song, nobody to beat them!!

How about £8M plus 2 players... RVP and Rooney.

No wonder the print media are dying on their arse! Not only is Baines the best left/wing back in the world, I think he's a contender for Premier League Player of the Year.

What a crock of shit!

I don't want Leighton Baines to go anywhere for whatever the price. But if he wanted to leave he could choose any top club in Europe and for a damn sight more than £8-11m.

If Moyes allowed such a transfer to take place and Baines was swapped for Evra + £8M, I would start an immediate campaign for Moyes to be sacked.

If of course it was Rooney + £8M then that might be okay...

I've heard the Board have applied to the league to change our name to Manure Castaways.

Tommy, what Baines have you been watching? He's been oustanding as the form of others dips.
£20 million minimum.

I was talking to a Man Utd friend a few weeks ago about this and he made a good point about Baines and full backs in general. You don't really see monster transfer fees for left/right backs. Of course there are exceptions but I agree with him. I think £8-12M is more realistic.

I thought he was excellent yesterday. It wouldn't surprise me if he went in the summer, I would imagine the more games he gets for England the more he'll want to play at the highest level in club football.

Tom - £8 to 12m? He's one of the best left backs in europe, why else would whiskey nose be after him. He's worth more than Rodwell, so it has got to be £20m plus.

Baines has proved that playing for Everton has not hindered any International ambitions. The only reason he hasn't played more for England is the form of Cole but he is getting more and more games as Cole reaches the end of his career.

I agree with the majority on this – has to be worth more than Rodwell so £15 million minimum.

Sometimes people get carried away with what we should receive for a player. However, Baines brings both solid defensive qualities and a creative presence going forward that any winger would be proud of. He is without doubt the best fullback in the league this season (and probably last) and anything short of £20 mil would be an outrage.

Personally I just wouldn't sell him.

I will breathe a sigh of relief if this transfer window passes with our squad intact. We should start to do what the Spanish do, and load players contracts with absurd ‘get-out clause prices’.

8m would take the piss.

I suspect there's a clause somewhere related to transfer/salary. With Fellaini being our highest earner (£75k) his value is £30m-ish in press bt more like £20-25m. I'd be surprised if Bainsey is on more than £45k and his value more like £12-15m in total – cash plus player.

The thought of Everton selling Baines to Man Utd or any other club makes me feel physically sick. There's not many English players out there with world class ability but Baines is definitely one of them. If Fergie offered £25M, I'd tell him to Fuck Off.

Simple

In — Hangeland free, Ruddy £6M, a decent younger centre half with wages from Distin and Neville. Possibly swap Rangel for Coleman.

Out — Howard £3M, Heitinga £4M.

Ian - I rate him highly like everyone else but I just don't think we'll get what we think we should do for him. Players in his position just don't go for top dollar generally and if they do they've got genuine top level football experience and pedigree. He hasn't got any Champions League or meaningful international experience. I hope I'm wrong though as I can see him going in the summer.

The RS bought Johnson for 17 million and Baines is far superior to that limp dick. We're not talking about your average wing full-back here,Baines has been in a class of his own. His stats prove he's one of,if not the best supplier of the ball in Europe.

I hear Fergie wants rid of Nani, which I'd be more open to than Evra if we can somehow make that happen... or if somehow Smalling.

I can also see Fellaini going in January for around £30M, ideal replacements as the funds will be available would be Holtby, creative player. Replacement for keeper such as Butland and a solid right back. Maybe even get Ofoe in on loan and see how good he is.

I love Leighton. I was made up when we bought him as he knew we would have a classy left back for a generation. He must never play in any other colour. Great player.

Really pointless story...clearly fiction. 1) Baines is worth more money 2) Evra wouldn't want to come to us 3) money plus player bids barely ever happen.

Baines is a great defensive player, and is one of the best crosses/set piece experts in the whole division. I can't see us selling for less than 15million, and I'm not sure anyone will pay that for a 28 year old, so I expect him to finish his career with us.

Of course Moyes will sell Baines to manure, then he can still keep working with him when he take over as manager there next summer....just a thought.

Bjørn-Ivar #272, yes I can see that. Moyes or Guardiola, not much to think about really.

I see the Mail has us on the goalkeeper hunt. You'd imagine that we could be in for Buttland at Birmingham. Not seen much of him, but I assume he is having an average time of it considering little coverage since Olympics.

Mucha is out of contract in the summer, so it looks like he is on his way.

Pablo @ 251, we can't use the what them across the park pay as a benchmark for what other players are worth. They have paid some seriously over inflated prices for some very average players over the past 3 or 4 years. If everybody went down that road the whole league would go bust.

We must hang on to our British players as they are less likely to move away. Foreign players are over here for money (I don't blame them) and that's a no-brainer!

I would be more agreeable to the likes of Heitinga being allowed to go if we can get any club interested in him. If Duffy is not ready to replace him then he never will be as Heitinga lacks pace and tackling ability.

We need to bring players in and use the money we made on selling Rodwell. We have never used the money we have gained from the sales last season and before. Arteta, Beckford, Yak, Yobo and Rodders have all exited and precious little has been spent on replacements.

If we let Baines go without him demanding a transfer, then it's a sure guideline to our ambition. We seem to be a feeder club to the top four and that's a shame!

I could not put a price on Leighton, but he would not look out of place in Barca or Madrid's team.

Man Utd signed that Buttner character as a long-term replacement for Evra, they also have Fabio out on loan set to return in the summer, having gained experience being relegated with QPR.

This just stinks of lazy journalism to me, regurgitating old stories from the summer.

Officially the most creative player in europe for £8million plus an old timer....they're having a laugh!!

Barmy talk from the Mancs and the press trying to unsettle a player. Baines is not just the best full back in the premiership he is amongst the best two to three players in the league regardless of position. Dickheads on here advocating selling him obviously don't watch us and don't look at stats either.

A great player who would grace any side in the world. If Ferguson wants him he can offer 30M and I still wouldnt sell him

Sorry to be rather late to respond to Pablo's comment of this time last night but a footnote in Garth Crook's team of the week says our LB has reached 50 chances created , more than any player in the top 5 leagues in Europe. (BBC website)
